Wally must have known he was out and just seeing if the ump would budge because there is no way he would have been than mild tempered if he really thought he was safe, it's Wally Backman.
If you haven't watched the series playing for peanuts yet you should. It will make this a little more clear. They have a problem with umpires during the whole series and I think he knows at this time it will get no better.
If you watch all the videos, you can tell Wally likes George, that’s why he never got in a position to get ejected, he treated George much differently than the other umpires
@chuckfan1 - I think Backman knew he was wrong or at least didn't have a good case, and that's why he didn't get himself ejected for arguing. But, the umpire who made the second call is also the same umpire who made the initial call, so he overruled himself. The only information provided by the plate umpire was that the first baseman had the ball in front of him - he never said he saw a tag. So it was a murky play on all sides. Entertaining though!
francobobfred True, but it isn't exactly wrong. If the ball does not beat the runner to the bag, the runner is safe. So, if the runner gets to the bag the exact same time as the ball, the ball did not beat the runner to the bag--so the runner is safe. Or, in other words, "tie goes to the runner."
+Carl Saberhagen if the ball and the runner coincidentally reach the bag at the same time the question you ask yourself is, "did the runner beat the ball?" in the instance of a "tie" the runner will never ever beat the ball therefore the runner is out. But the thing about this kind of play is that its a judgement call by the umpire and I can guarantee that it will not be called the same way for every umpire.
Kris Rule 6.05(j): "After a third strike or after the batter hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base." The key word is BEFORE. A batter is out only if the batter or bag are touched BEFORE the batter reaches the bag. So, if the the batter or first base is touched "at the same time" or "after" then the batter is safe. "At the same time" is the same as a "tie."
"you cant call a guy safe and then out" - uhh yes you can, you have to obviously make a call when a play happens BUT if you are not sure what it really is than you ask a fellow umpire and make then once again re-make the call after you have spoken with ur fellow umpire...Simple actions taken Mr Backman
Sometimes you have to when your partner is a dumbass. & judging by the fact this base umpire is carrying an indicator & keeping the count, I’d say he’s a first class dumb ass
@@rynemorse9014 base guy looks like he should be doing girl softball 🥎! make a call stick with it, i would of threw him under the bus and back up on him as well!
Jeremiah De La Fuente Yeah, the second thing that Backman said that was wrong (the first being "tie goes to the runner") was that "you can't call him out and then call him safe". When I heard that, I laughed out loud!!! Of course you can!! You make a call, then when the play ends, you can get help from your partner if you think you need to. If he sees something that would cause you to change your call, you do it. It's something that is done all the time.
Jeremiah De La Fuente Yeah, the home plate guy didn't help the base ump at all. He looked a lot younger than the guy on the bases, so maybe experience would have played a part in it. But, that is the plate umps call all the way on the interference and not running in the lane.
Russell Brooker the batter runner was outside of the running lane when he made contact with the first baseman. It wasn’t a case where at the every end his foot went out to touch the base. He was completely outside of the lane (except for his right foot) and as he stepped towards the base he made contact with the first baseman while moving toward getting back into the lane.
Now I what the late Ron Luciano had to put with him as an umpire in his book "The Umpire Strikes Back" when he said umpiring in the minor leagues was an adventure.
Train wrecks are a 50/50 proposition. Wally said his piece. But he knows with a 2 man crew, that call isn't easy. Great piece of both umpiring and coaching.
I don't know about that ump's reasoning. How can the foot of the fielder and the runner touch the base at the same time if the fielder was in front of the runner to tag him out. Doesn't make any sense.
there's no such thing as "interference" there it'd be "obstruction" that would be the proper term. Second he can be anywhere he wants if he has the ball or the ball is in flight on its way to the fielder. At that point by rule its entirely the obligation of the runner to avoid contact.
First of all, the fielder never commits interference. The term you are looking for is obstruction. But a fielder cannot be guilty of obstruction if he has the ball. Slow it down and watch it again. The first baseman had the ball before there was contact.
Why wouldn't he? They've been in the organization together for years I'm sure. I bet they have scouting reports on umpires (for strike zones and such). That doesn't sound too weird. Heck, in coaching high school softball I get every umpire's name before the games.
i looked at the linked video of the alternate angle and when i paused it when the runner and the first baseman collided, the runner's foot was on the base before the tag. so that was a bad call and he was ultimately safe.
Let's all keep in mind Wally saw this from the dugout, not our angle OR the umps.... the real reason he is mad is because the ump initially called the runner safe then switched it once he heard the home plate's ump view, rather his which was much closer...You can't switch on your official call as an ump with no other evidence but another ump's( specifically the ump FARTHEST away from the ball) opinion of what happened.
Here are my thoughts on it. First of all the first baseman never really tagged him before he crossed the base. Second of all the first baseman blocked the runner & made contact with runner Third is the first baseman made contact & blocked runner completely from being able to touch first base before ball hit glove. Result if anything should be runner safe.
@chuckfan1 um, no the tie goes to the runner, always has. Not sure what kind of baseball you have been around but in MLB tie always goes to the runner by rule.
Technically, you are correct according to the book. The problem is that there are no discernable ties in baseball. The human eye is not capable of determining a true tie so one thing happened before the other. Most umpires believe that when the play is so close you can't determine which happened first, they will get the out. One team is going to complain, so you may as well get the out.
Backman's actually wrong on this one. The umpire can, under his discretion change the call. Also, the rule states that the runner must beat the ball to first base. Since the runner didn't beat the ball, he's out.
First off, the guy who was on the defense was blocking the runners path with his foot and his body. You're not allowed to block the path of the runner until you have possession of the ball. Stop it at the 0:13 second mark and you can see that the ball was not in his possession, yet he was blocking the path.
Wally hates that umpire lol I'd give anything to have a minor league team here in Savannah, we lost the Sand Gnats about 7 years ago, I didn't know Wally was the Manager in Albany Ga
Because everyone needs to know the count and how many outs there are. That way if the HPU loses the count, the other guy has it. It also keeps track of infield fly rule.
i love how he starts every argument with "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?"
Same!!
Same thing really happened!!
Key points of argument:
1. Jason didn't call him out George did
2. For fuck's sake George!!
excellent background music
what is it the song name what is the song
Soul Bossa Nova
It was in all the Austin Powers movies.
It's always the most hilarious music being played when there's a shitstorm coming
Hilarious how the umpires are throwing each other under the bus to avoid the wrath of Wally!
They're both afraid to say what they really mean. "I didn't see it." 😂😂😂
They didn't want hear or see him. Because they knew they had gotten the call wrong. Runner was safe
Watching this guy bitch at the umps just never gets old
Wally was surprisingly calm there.
The umpires weren't being dicks about it.
That's because he doesn't disagree with the call. He's just pissed at the reversal.
Review the play
@@XXelpollodiabloXX Tough to tell. Either way, not a call worth getting worked up over. BTW Funny background music to go with that decision.

Wally always rips on George XD
0:47 when you come back from break and see your co workers being clueless
Made the right call! He was out because he was running inside of the baseline and if the ball hits him or if he interferes with the play he is out.
I love in all the videos of Wally that the first words out of his mouth are "what the fuck is going on?" Hilarious
The Austin Powers theme playing in the background makes this 10 times funnier
It's Soul Bossa Nova done by Quincy Jones and his Orchestra. His "Gravy Train Waltz" is another gem, magnificent big band sound.
You guys need to keep a camera on Backman the entire game xD
Wally should be a ringtone

would you not over rule yourself if it was the right call afterwards? just saying. that mother fucker was out as fuck if the tag was there

That is the accepted phraseology in professional baseball. It tells you who is not here for his first rodeo.

I don't know how he doesn't lose his mind at that goddamn Austin Powers music
You know something is going down when Backman says " What the fuck is going on " xD
C'mon Wally. You've been around baseball long enough to know that there is no such thing as "tie goes to the runner." :-D
francobobfred True, but it isn't exactly wrong. If the ball does not beat the runner to the bag, the runner is safe. So, if the runner gets to the bag the exact same time as the ball, the ball did not beat the runner to the bag--so the runner is safe. Or, in other words, "tie goes to the runner."

fair, and I see it. But ultimately a safe or out call is a judgement call by the umpire and the calls will vary.
That was a rhetorical question lol Wally fully knows the answer to that man
In MLB today the batter would be out just based on the fact he ran way inside the baseline. They would call interferance
its usually when in doubt the runner is out
"you cant call a guy safe and then out" - uhh yes you can, you have to obviously make a call when a play happens BUT if you are not sure what it really is than you ask a fellow umpire and make then once again re-make the call after you have spoken with ur fellow umpire...Simple actions taken Mr Backman

Runner interference, should of been safe no matter where the ball was, he was blocking the base path.
The tag hit his back and the only way that physically happens is if the runner is on the base
