The fact that the MTA took this long to post this video just shows how efficient the MTA is

    • @GIJew
      @GIJew 4 года назад +18

Um, no, this was to put out a point that swiping is important, as a LOT of kids don't swipe their cards when entering the bus/subway. That makes the MTA think that not as many people ride that line as they do, causing them to cut service when they shouldn't be.

This is a really disappointing video, that green student metrocard came out like years ago... and that’s only for students in middle/high school. I thought this video was going to be the MTA announcing a new student metrocard program for college students. Top of the fact that some students have to pay a lot for tuition, they also need to pay for a monthly that’s worth $127. That’s not fair but hopefully the fair fares program that’ll help CUNY students out can be helpful. However I feel like it’ll probably only work with students that are in low income families so it would likely only benefit a specific amount of people. Unfortunately students that attend private colleges or SUNY’s are out of luck...

Mocha18 In select CUNY Colleges, such as City Tech, there is a program for full time students called the Accelerated Studies in Associate Programs, or ASAP. This program not only gives you a free MetroCard for the 15-week semester, but also gives you personal advising, book voucher, etc. While the program is normally for those in the Associates program (2-year degrees) for select majors, in the case of City Tech, they will support you for the first two-three years of your bachelors degree.
If you are transferring to City Tech, you are further eligible for the NSF HSI IUSE program, which will also give you unlimited metrocards for the semester.
John Jay students also have the Accelerate Complete Engage (ACE) program, which is their bachelors degree version of ASAP. More details about all three programs available here (note, the first two is for city tech, though ASAP is available at other colleges)

ASAP: for the associates programs at select colleges

Bryan Castillo And there in lies the problem. ACE is the 4-year version of ASAP. However, it’s currently available at only one college: John Jay in Midtown.
However, both programs have limited enrollment, so not everyone, even in the eligible degrees would be accepted. An unlimited card for all CUNY students unable to make the cut for ASAP and ACE should be done in conjunction with OMNY.

Miki N They do have two CUNY programs that offer unlimited cards for eligible students, ASAP (Accelerated Studies in Associates Program) and ACE (Accelerate, Complete, Engage). The latter is a new program that launched last year as a bachelors version of ASAP. It will be expanded to other colleges depending on the success of the program.
The problem with both of these programs is that a limited number of students are eligible for these programs. I was lucky to be in ASAP despite applying to a bachelors degree.
As part of OMNY, college student OMNY cards should be evaluated. Using CUNY for example, I am suggesting a fare similar to the ASAP MetroCards: unlimited rides for the entire duration of the 15-week semester (during fall and spring). Since I am also suggesting that only full-time students be eligible for the cards, the cards would also be tied with the students CUNYFirst account so that when they register for classes and they hit the full-time threshold, the benefits get loaded into the card and immediately activate on the first day of the semester. For summer and winter classes, if a student is taking classes during those times, regardless of how many credits they take (I personally do not see any reason to be full time for these short sessions), then the benefits get loaded immediately. The winter benefits would be active for the entire month of January and for summer from June to Mid August, regardless of what summer session you take (subject to revision). When not enrolled in classes, the student will be charged $1.50 for the fare until they graduate, at which point, it becomes a regular OMNY card.

College student discounts would be a huge boon for the city. Ideally, this program should be tied with OMNY, and for the fare, I suggest doing it similar to ASAP: unlimited for the entire 15-week semester. Since the card would be useful for full times students, this would be tied in with the students CUNYFirst Account, so that when they register for the fall and spring semesters, the benefits will activate only if they register for 12 or more credits. If they are also taking summer or winter classes, they will also get unlimited fares regardless of how many credits they are taking (personally, I think it makes no sense for someone to go full time during summer and winter), though with the three summer sessions, the benefits will be active from June to August regardless of what session the student is taking. Outside those days, the card acts like a regular OMNY card.

If you don’t pay your fare or swipe a valid MetroCard, not only will that mean that less revenue for subway repairs, but also you are asking them to reduce service on your subway line. KFlossy 21 Only if you are a high school student or below. For college students, there is somewhat of a solution:
In select CUNY Colleges, such as City Tech, there is a program for full time students called the Accelerated Studies in Associate Programs, or ASAP.

JawnDough 9403 Fear not. I have a new long term solution, and that is to build a new tunnel connecting the Broadway Line at Whitehall Street and the Fulton Street Line at the (inactive as a Subway stop) Court Street station, which then leads to the Hoyt-Schermerhorn outer tracks. Another short tunnel would also connect the IND Fulton Line with the BMT Jamaica El at Cypress Hills. Complementing all of this is an extension of the Astoria Line from Ditmars to LaGuardia Airport.
From here, the R and W would be rerouted from the 4th Avenue Line to the Fulton Street Line local tracks to Broadway Junction. From Broadway Jct, the R would go to Euclid Avenue and the W to Jamaica Center. The R would now be based out of Pitkin Yard and the W at East NY Yard (upgraded for longer trains, as would the stations). The C train would move to the express tracks with the A and take over A service to Lefferts Blvd. A service to Far Rockaway would be increased. The J would be truncated to Broadway Junction
In addition, to speed service, the R would be rerouted to the Astoria Line again, sharing the line with the W. The N would move to 96th Street with the Q. Both service will reach Harlem-125th Street. This would provide more frequent and reliable service on all Broadway tracks. The R and W would now be branded the High-Speed Locals.
To replace Queens Blvd service, a new K train would be created, operating as the local variant of the E from 71st Avenue to WTC. The M would move to 63rd Street with the F. In addition, the C and D routes would swap so that the C would go express from Canal Street to 145th Street, then over the Concourse Line to Norwood-205th Street, while the D would go local from 59th Street-Columbus Circle to 145th Street, then local to 168th Street.
To replace the R on 4th Avenue, the J would be extended to 95th Street at all times except late nights, when an N shuttle would run between Whitehall and 95th Street..

I swipe my metro card and take that train ONE STOP, and then transfer to another train and take that the rest of the way, so basically i’m voting for a train i don’t take too much, PLUS, take a stop like 14th st union square, lots of people swipe in there, and there’s like what, 8 lines there? how will you know what train people are voting for? Please explain to me how this will make any logical sense like... MTA i feel like y’all just lying now

Harper Actually, that is going to work. MetroCard data extracted from the swipes dictate which lines get increased or decreased service. More swipes, more service. Conversely, fewer swipes equals less service.
In addition, the MetroCard data also allows for prioritization of station improvements based on usage.

MTA should really fix those fuking vending machines that don't work. Some don't accept cash only coins. This usually happens in my old Station, 103 Street Corona Plaza Flushing Line. The vending machines no working for shit. Sometimes the line is long to get to the cab to pay for the 7 day Week MetroCard or other Metro Card Fare. It just creates people to go to work late. It also involves students (even if they have free 3 rides) Sometimes, the turnstiles just don't work and take all 3 free rides to go to school. It a worst nightmare. MTA should really fix the turnstiles and vending machines at the Flushing lines and other lines that have the same problem.

NYC TransitRailFan OMNY should alleviate those issue by allowing for card refills on your phone. They will also have updated ticket machines for those that still need them (the physical OMNY card will come out in 2021).

I have seen this multiple times, and it never makes any sense. It's as if they are asking to reduce service on their bus or subway line.
Also, I did remember one time when I was on a B82 bus at Kings Hwy and E. 16th Street, and the driver called out fare beaters who were entering through the back door, and this was pre-SBS. Best of all, it was on the PA SYSTEM!!!
