    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 3 года назад

      Actually OMNY is an improvement. It cuts down on maintenance costs for the card and allows the funds to be used on other things.
      In addition, you don’t have to look for the app, and wait for connection. The system does not rely on a internet connection. I have an iPhone and it uses something called express transit where you don’t even have to unlock your phone to access Apple Pay on the trains. Just bring your phone up to the reader and tap. Other phones should have be updated with this feature. So to correct your comment:
      OMNY: pull out cellphone/bank card and tap. Simple.

    MTA's MetroCards are DA BOMB! Their fare structure is pretty similar to ours here in Chicago. Here, we have the Ventra tap-and-go fare payment system and it's really cool. We have full fare, reduced fare (for senior citizens & people with disabilities) & student fare. In addition, we also have Ride Free permits, which are also for senior citizens & people with disabilities, and they ride any local or express bus, as well as metro trains, for free.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 3 года назад

      What’s wrong with OMNY? They will have those exact same features soon.

    • @protectorofillinois3
      @protectorofillinois3 3 года назад

      @@TheRailLeaguer Ooops! My bad lol. I completely forgot about OMNY's tap-and-go fare payment system replacing MetroCards when watching the vid. I highly confess $2.75 per swipe is a little too high (and I also think it's ridiculous you can only put a maximum of $100 on the card. They should allow a max of at least $500 on the card). Here in Chicago, if you have the Ventra tap-and-go full fare card, the fare is $2.25 for the 1st ride, $.25 for the 2nd ride, and the 3rd ride is free if used within 2 hours (if paying fares with cash only, it's $2.25 per ride). We also had the same difficulties when Ventra was first implemented, and because we had a different fare card, it didn't work too well and didn't work with our commuter rail system - METRA. It lasted for 2 months, but after finally working out the errors and kinks, we got the new cards that replaced our old cards, and I can honestly say I love it.

    MTA rolls out new system but still haven't solved the transit system problems that have been plaguing NYC for oh DECADES.
    To be honest when the Metrocard rolled out I considered it to be a sort of a decent replacement but over the years after living in NJ and using the PATH's system trip cards, I felt that the Metrocard was the worse invention that should've been improved a LOOONG time ago. Countless cards are constantly being strewn everywhere. On the ground, on train floors, spilling from a useless receptacle for used cards. In the hands of "swiping fair evaders looking for a quick buck". Even when they expire and you have to replace them, the machine will transfer whatever funds are left to a new card, then gives you back both the new AND EXPIRED ONE. WHY? What is the purpose of handing back a card that YOU have to expose of? Which only ends up as litter on the ground?
    In live in NJ, I travel on the PATH. They use a contactless card system and the old trip ticket system. The thing with the old trip card system is, sure you see some get tossed around on the ground but the turnstile "traps" the card when it's finished. It is not refillable like a Metrocard. It's just a one shot trip card. Whether you buy a round trip card for the day or a 30-trip card (which will only give you 15 days of roundtrips) once it gets low the turnstile traps it. Not give it back making litter. I always find that there some ideas that are good but sometimes there is some backwards thinking or they people in charge just don't think far ahead on the development. But then again who does?

That's 20+ years they had a system to replace the token and that took a while. Of course there are other cards, but it's still a plastic card. People kept wonder what they were going to do. Other places already had a "tap" system in place.

Also, the amount of waste the Metrocard created. The rollout was shaky but we kept it. But when the card is empty people just toss it on the ground. The machines don't properly dispose of them, you're stuck with having to toss an expired card. NJ already has that type of card. They even implemented the Metrocard into the system a bit. They could've did this system earlier and worked on new features later. But I guess late is better than never.

You first walk to the nearest S46 or S96 bus stop and tap your device or contactless card at the scanner on the front of the bus. From there, you ride the bus all the way to the end of the line at the St. George Ferry Terminal. "but muh privacy"
      Even though they can track MetroCard usage and if bought by a debit or credit card, who actually bought it, and for those people who are skeptical that they keep track of your information, everything is anonymized unless you actually sign up for an account with the MTA.
      "but why are we spending this money on a new fare payment system, instead of actually fixing up the signals and stations?"
      MetroCard is already past it's lifespan, and system maintenance prices are rising rapidly, and they're still pouring money into fixing subways and buses with Fast Forward.
      Technically, this should've been already in place years ago, but it's now getting there.
      Also, this is one project that is actually good, taking a system that's old and upgrading it to the most modern technology to date, instead of it waiting for it to get crippled and then when it comes crashing down, pour money into fixing it like the subway system right now.
      (I've actually seen you on other MTA videos, and you probably know this, but this is just some of the skepticisms that people have said about OMNY.)

      @@TheRailLeaguer I don't get why people embrace it more... It's the future (for us at least). The only reason why OMNY had credit cards from most other countries is because of the fact that this technology is already widely accepted in Europe, Asia, Canada, and even other metro cities here in America. If we had the thought of "it works, let's stick to the past," then we wouldn't have MetroCard, smartphones, laptops, and a ton of other technology.

    • @BrianCairns
      @BrianCairns 4 года назад

      The technology behind OMNY was actually developed by Transport for London (TfL) along with Cubic, who developed the Metrocard in NYC and also has the contract for the Oyster card in London (among many other systems).
      The MTA selected Cubic for the OMNY system, and Cubic is actually licensing technology from TfL to deliver it.
      Debit/credit card support (called "open loop" in the industry) is relatively new in transit systems, and most cities still require you to use issued by the transit agency (called "closed loop").
      There are major differences in how open-loop and closed-loop are actually implemented: with closed loop systems, the card itself actually stores the balance, so transactions can be (and usually are) processed primarily offline. With open-loop systems, transactions are sent to the back-end servers, which calculate the fares and assess the correct charges.
      There are advantages to both approaches.

      There will be unlimited rides with OMNY coming soon.
      However, come to think of it, unlimited rides isn’t what we need anymore. It is too expensive for the people who stand to benefit from it the most, aka essential workers who commute a lot, plus have to run a few errands with public transit. Rather, what is needed is fare capping. What fare capping means is that once you paid a certain amount in fares within a certain timeframe, the system stops charging you for any more rides for the rest of that period. It’s similar to how it works in London, Portland, and a number of other cities.

      If you want the same level of privacy that you have right now with MetroCard, wait until they come out with their new contactless OMNY card in 2021. MTA already has data on your MetroCard anyway, and connect your debit card and credit card purchases with your MetroCard, so if you really want to be privacy conscious, use cash at new vending machines in 2023.

      Ms SkIsS For now, continue to use your MetroCard.
      The physical card will come out in 2021, and MetroCard will be phased out in 2023, making OMNY the only way to enter the system. The OMNY cards can be purchased in the same way as MetroCards can at the station. There will also be an app you can get for this.

    I get issued a Transit debit card through my job which is NOT contactless. What am I supposed to do? I kinda hate that we are forced to put more and more of our information on more and more platforms in order to live. I try to reduce as much as possible putting my card info everywhere. I try to make online purchases with prepaid gift cards and I don’t store card info in online wallets. But it doesn’t matter because it becomes mandatory to put your info everywhere in order to live. Then when our information is stolen, we get an email and an offer for free credit monitoring for a year while hackers wait out the uproar and try to steal your identity at a later date.
    I actually make it a habit of NOT taking out my devices in the subway, so now I have to. The only time I take out my card is when I have to refill (because in the decades of metrocard, they never thought of an online refill system), and I turn around and watch my surroundings as I put it away quickly to ensure no one is watching/following me. Now, I must walk around with it in my hand and be fiddling with my wallet while I move away from the turnstile, distracted. Yeah...I’m paranoid, but people are insane and it’s one thing when it’s busy and there are many people around, it’s another thing when you take the subway late at night or very early in the morning and must have your valuables out-which again, I never do.

      Don’t worry. In 2021, they’re going to introduce OMNY cards that you can refill just like a MetroCard, and you just tap it like a contactless credit card.

    • @1nsertTitleHere

      The hope is you can create an OMNY account and attack that card to your OMNY card. Option two will be the MTA offering the OMNY card on Google and Apple Pay so you can tap and go with your phone without the need of that physical card.
      Or, you can hope that the card will work with Google or Apple Pay and use it just like a credit card

    • @Affixton96
      @Affixton96 4 года назад +1

      @W S In 2021, the OMNY Card will be introduced to replace the MetroCard. I'm sure it will come with its own versions for students, the elderly, and other people, so you won't have to use your devices to use OMNY.
