- About 6.9 million metric tons of e-waste was produced in the U.S. alone in 2019. That's about the same weight as 19 Empire State Buildings. Of that, only about 15% was collected for recycling. Until products like phones and tablets are made to last much longer, Apple, Google, Samsung and others could do more to fix this problem of e-waste, and consumers need to be more responsible when buying and discarding their devices.

We’re too concerned with recycling when reducing and reusing are the steps that come way before it.

It was originally “reduce, reuse, recycle”. But since recycling is a ludicrous business, we seemed to have forgotten about the first 2..
There was a huge scandal about the company GEEP. They were supposed to recycle devices for Apple, but a few of their employees were selling those devices for profit. As bad as stealing is, Apple was sending fully functional devices to be recycled. All they care about is their profit margin.
That will never happen - these companies need revenue
only recycle parts that are 100% known to not be useful anymore. things like dead motherboards, cracked displays, etc.
No interview with Louis Rossman ? The guy who’s argued for right to repair against Apple in the court system for years? Missed opportunity there. The guy from iFixIt is still great, but Louis has lots of incredible insight on the Right to Repair.
Yes, this is what I want to discuss about.

Tech trash doesn't get talked about enough. the more companies come out with new material, the more people will buy and getting rid of their old material. All of this is another reminder of how we ourselves are causing pollution and toxic waste we can do better to change that. Tech companies as well.
Apple is the main culprit
I have a first generation ipad basically the first one that ever came out. It doesn't upgrade any more. Sometimes it will kick me out of apps or kick me out of the browser while I am using it. Just became annoying as heck. I even did a hard reset which didn't fix the problem. I decided to get a samsung galaxy tablet. I still have the first ipad and use it from time to time. I use my samsung tablet too more so while I am on vacation though (beats bringing a laptop). As for smart phones- I truthfully only have had one. As long as it continues to work , I most likely will not buy another phone. Don't even care about the 5G. I'm content. As for laptops I had been using my Dell laptop since 2005. Then it finely pooped out on me 2 years ago so bought an HP. I don't really see myself as an e-waster as i tend to just use my gadgets for the longest possible and use them to the very max.

@@insectbite1714 not really. I can and am using a phone they made back in 2015. The iPhone 6S. Its updated, they support it. It's a high end product, it lasts, it works. Its much much worse to buy some crappy android phone and having to replace it every 2 years because it slows down for no rreason and isnt updated. Talk about generating trash

There’s a country in Europe where they passed a law that stated companies had to start making products that last longer so people don’t have to keep throwing products away

There is an approved motion for a resolution of the European Parliament (A8-0214 / 2017, text in English on the Europa website) which could eventually become a law in the future. The shortest compulsory guarantee for EU consumers is already extended to 2 years compared to 1 year in North America. There also is a system in place to facilitate electronic waste recycling, the rate is currently more than 40%.
They could just stop selling in that country.
I agree on the right to repair movement as it's not just targeting tech items either, items like kitchen appliances, lamps and garden machinery are also going to be made to be built at a higher price so they can be repaired before being thrown away.

@Weicong Zhang That's the spirit! Why repair something when you can just throw it away and get a new one? If the phone is supported with software updates and security patches for 3-5 years. Maybe all you need to keep using your current phone after 18 months is a new battery, do you really toss the whole phone?

So no need for crazy specs and everything just "runs" off the cloud. Instead of hardware manufacters selling 128 GB phone they just rent cloud space from google realllly cheap and your phone is off the "cloud". Think like stadia
@Weicong Zhang Not pointless especially for appliances and cars. Those things are starting to get infected with the BS in phones that make the hard to repair.
It doesn't matter how modular something is if the company serialises most of components so they don't work properly after replacement.
This makes the OEM the only ones possible to make new components work.
Therefore they can charge whatever they like for repairs.
They can choice to only offer certain repairs. Example: Cracked the back of your fragile glass phone? The company doesn't offer that repair but don't worry they can just replace the whole phone or maybe you would like the new model, as its almost the cost of this repair on your current phone....
If a company gets full control of repair, what happens when they stop supporting service for that device in 3yrs. To bad, looks like you will need to throw it away and buy the new one because no one can fix it but the manufacture.
Think thats bad, some companies slow down their devices as the battery ages and when you update the software, they also don't let you install the older software after you update to the new one. How do you think they make the new devices feel so much faster.

electronics should also have f*cking standard replaceable modules like in PCs, so you can take three different phones from iphone, samsung and noname vendor and make another working phone just from their parts
or take your old phone and just place there a new camera module if this is all you need from new phone

In mexico you can't throw away soda glass bottles because they have a box where you can leave empty glass bottles and It get ship back to the bottling factory

As a kid, I remember taking glass soda bottles back to the store for money. They cleaned and reused the bottles, not crush and recycle. This was before plastic bottles.

In my opinion reduce and reuse go hand in hand very often to the point they are usually the same thing
Living a minimalist lifestyle and reducing consumption will help with the e-waste problem. As consumers we need to demand electronic products that last longer rather than buying newer generations of the same electronics year after year. We also need to encourage manufacturers to implement trade-in programs where consumers can trade in their old phones and electronics and get a rebate to buy the newer electronic products when the time comes to replace them. We only have one mother earth and we better treat it well and do our part to recycle and minimize wastes.
Totally right. If phones last longer they will be resold more. This could make a new phone more expensive, but you will be able to resell for that much more.

@@drakes4625 where i live mostly everyone uses android since it can repaired for really cheap, meanwhile apple half the required parts get seized at customs for counterfeits, most android phones get on the spot repair usually 45 min -1h 20 minutes, had a Note 10 require a new charge IC took them 50 min to repair and cost me $60, compared to buying a new phone it was worth it, even sending it back to Samsung the repair would have cost me $250 and 2 weeks. even though the part sold for $2-10.

Tax the big companies, then you will see a solution come out quicker than ever.
Then they will pass to the consumer. CA add e-waste/recycle/disposal fee on most electronics that we buy that has a screen on (ie. phones, TV, etc.)
Or just ban the sale of new electronic items. Would fix it even faster. Let's look at Cuba and how old American cars from the fifties still do duty over there. If new supply is no longer available, we will keep on using what is for far longer. And fix it when it finally breaks down. Of course, an outright ban could be hard. But let's say we add a $5000 tax on every new phone sold. Suddenly old phones would become very valuable, and we would also stop buying phones that couldn't be easily serviced.
Actually if states required companies to take back their electronics, you will see them build more reliable and longer lasting items because now they have to deal with the trash they create.

@@SweBeach2023 Have you been to Cuba? Those old 50s American cars have the worst emmissions I have ever seen. The air quality in the streets of Havana during rush hour is worse than Beijing (IMO). I'm not disagreeing with the idea of reuse, but it's not always so simple :s

I used my Motorola Razr from 2009 til 2017 until it just stopped working. Got a brand new Motorola G4 that I still use today. You don't have to upgrade every time a new version every few months. Just take care of your stuff and it can last.

@@Carterthielftw_ the moto g4 came out in 2016 which is what I was referring to. The fact that it was not even a flagship but a budget phone in 2016 and that he's using it is admirable.
Standardizing ports would help immensely. Making all charging cables the same (Type-C) for phones would help a ton. The same goes for laptops. There are infinitely many charging ports for laptops. Apple has kept changing theirs until recently, and it still varies between laptops. At least they have settled on one charging cable for their phones for the last couple of generations.
Switching back to removable batteries would help a ton too. I bought an Otterbox numerous times. I do not care about having a thinner phone each generation necessarily. Bigger, replaceable batteries would be great.
Not selling everyone super cheap .5amp charging plugs would help too. I still have to go buy a 40W charger to fully take advantage of my phone's quick charge. The included chargers with phones have been rip-offs and a class action lawsuit is warranted in my opinion. Why put insane quick charge capabilities in a $1,000 phone, and then include a borderline useless charger? It is very antitrust in my opinion.
Also, making subsequent generations of phones the exact same shape would help with e-waste too. Especially for wholesalers of phone cases.
Stop using glue, use normal screws, stop putting software locks on replacement parts, allow individual replacement parts to be sold. I don't care if the phone is a little bit bigger.

They probably changed the milliamps so that the older charger damages your new battery.

And they are including a usb type c cable so most users don’t even have a type c power brick. Guess what? Apple will also sell that to you.

I have been using an IPhone 7 for the last three years. I only changed the battery one year ago by myself, and I plan on using this phone for at least another 1-2 years.
No money wasted on new hardware, and the phone is still getting new software updates. Thanks for making this video, I think this is a really importante matter to consider whenever a new phone or laptop comes out.

Tesla are already stopping specialist repair shops repairing their cars by stopping them buy parts off them because they aren't Tesla dealers. Watch rich rebuilds he got fed up with Tesla's attitude to small repair shops not supplying them so he is rebuilding a Tesla with a engine and transmission he can get parts for easily and it's not electric.

Interesting. I've had a Galaxy Note8 that I've used for around 2½ years before it began having input lag issues (I can explain), and finally let go after over 3 years when I was able to upgrade, however, I think the issue was with the battery, RAM, and/or internal storage being worn out, and replacing the battery helped partially alleviate the issue. I'm a heavy user and take a lot of photos, as well as use a lot of apps.
@@kbhasithe condition of my sgs8 is far from perfect. Its lagging sometimes and the screen burned in at the bottom and all covered with scratches. But it is steal completely usable which allow me not to throw it away for now
@@kbhasi I'm using my s8 plus for like 3 years now and it still works like new, I've never heard of a phones internal storage/ram wearing out before. You could just try resetting it
Backwards-ahead of you on S7, that was damaged badly, got it's battery, screen and frame replaced, and still runs to this day as i'm writing a comment.

And for those who have old laptops or MacBooks and computers, don't throw it away or install Windows 10, install Linux and you PC will revive again.
When my old MacBook Pro was no longer able to get updates, I installed Linux on it. It was a little slow because of old hardware but it ran like a charm until the thing ultimately died. All totaled the MacBook Pro lasted me 8 years. I had that thing since college and kept it for years after! Sadly, with the new Macs with the M1 processors, you may not have the ability to run any OS other than MacOS on the Mac.
the original white 2006 MacBook does run Windows 10 quite fine though, ironically even better than it does as a Mac
@@nagayoshi9742 It definitely won't run the latest version of MacOS but yeah, you probably can run Windows 10 on a Mac from 2006. Microsoft even has a 32 Bit version of Windows 10 available for older PCs.

I've been using my iPhone 7 since August 2016. Changed the battery once in 2018, managed to update it to the latest iOS 14 on November, and aside from the not-so-good camera, everything is still working fine. The technology itself is capable to sustain for at least 3 to 5 years, the consumerism thing is the problem.

I am using iphone 6s from 2014. All I did was replaced the battery 🔋 and it works. As long as it works I use it. I hope everyone does too
That is what I did. I just now upgraded to the 12 Pro and I expect it to last as long as my 6s did. I’m glad Apple updates their devices for a while to allow longer use of older phones.

I had the 6S 16G until Jan 2020. I constantly had memory issues despite the fact that all my photos, emails, music, video, apps, texts, everything was off the phone. Eventually I gave up.

I still use an iphone 5s (since launch). I’m on my 3rd battery and third screen but its still serving me well all these years later. All repaired myself and with the help of ifixit

I wish Android phone makers like Samsung still put out software updates for their phones for longer than 2 years. That way, people who choose Android phones can keep them longer than 2 years. You can keep your new iPhone with guaranteed OS updates for 5 years.
Agreed. There is no reason at all other than pure greed that these up to $2,000 devices in the case of the Galaxy z Fold don't get updates for 5 years like iPhone does. They will run newer software without issue in all cases. If not then the root/rom community wouldn't exist. I have a Note 4 which came with Android 4 running on Android 9. The only reason its not running on Android 11 now is i would lost function on the headphone jack. It may not be as fast as a new device but it don't miss it by much at all.
@@jeremytart639 Wait, so Android 11 no longer supports the headphone jack? interesting since some budget phones still have headphone jacks. Also the Note 4 came out in 2014. I wouldn't think using that in 2020 going into 2021 as your main phone would be a good experience, even with rooting.
@@uthmanbaksh3530 actually it is good now. That's what I'm using. It's better now than when it was new. Everyone has been brainwashed into buying a new phone every year to three years when your hardware is still good. No what I'm saying like in the case of my note 4 and the like anything newer than android 9 usually doesn't support the headphone jack at the moment. Custom roms are different than stock google provided android. They are ported by the community. It's more a driver issue than anything. Oem's don't have that problem.

As a digital artist, I’ve had to buy new Wacom tablets, an Intuos Pro and a Cintiq Mobile Studio Pro, to replace my old Intuos 4 and Cintiq Companion 2, because of a simple USB issue or the screen dying when the Windows 10 OS still runs :( I hope that I can get these repaired or find safe, responsible ways to recycle these because Wacom doesn’t care. I’ve tried talking to them multiple times and not only have they insisted that they could repair them for at least $1k, they refuse to recycle them otherwise (I found out from other users that Wacom lied about having the parts for the same models). It doesn’t make sense that I have to pay almost half the price to repair such expensive products, and it’s even sadder when there is no way to recycle screen tablets 🥺 Thank you so much for shining light on the important issue of e-waste.

Seriously, they really should have brought him on. I was waiting for his appearance but he never showed up. I found his channel 3 months ago and now he's one of my favorite content creators.
Another major issue is planned obsolescence. We need to create legislation that stops companies from sabotaging perfectly good technology just so that we as consumers can go ahead and buy the new thing.
That's one method, but another way to stop planned obsolescence could just be to stop buying products from companies with bad reputations. I had an iPad 2, and refused to update it until one day the iPad locked me out, saying I couldn't use it at all until it updated. The update killed the iPad. So, I'm never buying another Apple product.

@@izafanime but a lot of the times it’s an industry wide practice. Like printer companies creating software that stops people from doing the eco friendly thing by just refilling existing cartridges or using after market cartridges.

@@masseiy Yes! I also noticed the corruption there and researched for several days before buying a printer. Not to save money, but out of principle. I settled on the ET-2720 eco-tank. Totally worth the time invested in researching.
We have an ewaste issue because these companies lead us to believe we need new devices every year or two rather than keeping them updated and useful for longer.

Just some basic computer knowledge like replacing hard drives with SSDs can allow an older computer to work for several more years because of those read/write speeds. Also, that Windows 10 update from older Windows really helped to keep older computers still functional.

Haven't watched drhe video yet, but I've watched similar ones regarding e-waste.
I think of the the biggest things driving e-waste is planned obsolescence. Also our consumption minded brains wanting the nearest and shiniest things. We are all guilty of this, and the only way to really change that mindset is to really think about whether we really NEED or wants that bad.

Bought my iPhone 6S 4 years ago for $50 back when contract deals were a thing. Even then the phone was technically 2 years old. It’s been very reliable and I’ve never had any issues with it, not even a cracked screen (knock on wood). Hopefully the swines at Apple continue to support it as I plan on keeping it indefinitely.

This is why we need to pass right to repair legislation and force tech companies to make repair easier and cheaper
If tech companies would release phones and tablets every 3-5 years we could cut down on e waste drastically. they are moving to services based models anyway. release hardware every 3-5 years, sell parts for repair to customers, and make schematics and repair guides available. That would make a huge difference in e waste going forward.
Does one really need to replace their phone on a yearly basis (or even a two-year basis)? I've been using my phone for almost 4 years now and I plan on using it till it breaks.
I have been using my mobile phone for 5 years now, it is still fast and able to install all the latest apps, only amazon is not allowing me to install it's latest android app and there is no need for me to drop it, I plan to use it till it breaks or if 5G becomes norm in my country and 4G is out of use.

Stopping planned obsolescence is a good starting point
Obsolescence isn't something that can be controlled. The basis of the industry is improvement - so we need better practice with making devices last longer for those that don't want to upgrade and for those that do, how do we limit the waste accumulated as time progresses.

Electronic recycler here. I sell used electronics on ebay. I can say it is insane how many old electronics are out there. Honestly there is a huge opportunity right now for electronic recycling. I have been doing this for 3 years now and I still am in amazment how much is really out there. I reccomend anyone trying to make good money to look into becoming a recycler. Theres so much out there the competition isnt even considered. It's easy to say the warehouse I work with is sitting on over 400k worth of old used electronics. Most people will give it to you for free just to come pick it up and certify the data destruction. What an industry.

Then recycle and sell the raw materials back The exhaust, co3, methane, etc, from the plant, can be reuse and power its own factory. The problem with Apple is they don't want you to have to have the right to repair. They want to be the only ones to repair it. This is a way for Apple to make more money.
They never repair even 10cents worth of work. They say it costs 1000USD and want you to replace instead.
“Phones last 2 years” -and I’m over here watching this video on my iPhone 7 Plus that’s 4yrs old, going on 5 and it still look brand new + function fine after multiple drops right onto concreted. Not a single crack. I never update new software too... I wait for all the reported bugs first and see if I can live with them. If not, I wait for the patch before updating. Lol. Really, the only reason I consider upgrading my smart phone is bc of the new camera built into it, if not, I can use the same phone for 10 years and be fine.
Recycling process must be a part of the initial product design. This means engineers must design the product which can be processed aftewards in a recycling facility. It can be either universal( less likely) or per each manufacturer.

So grateful that this video was made. Thank you CNBC. You guys just encouraged me to repair my phone rather than get a new one just yet. There’s so much at stake here, I se that more clearly now.
A practical and absolute solution to this problem can be in the form of new regulation as follows: A company that designs A new product will obviously design its manufacturing and ASSEMBLY procedures. The new regulation will say that they also MUST design its DISASSEMBLY process! the same way they design the most efficient process to assemble their products, these companies will be forced to design an equivalent backward procedure. This will cost them more money and eventually cause them to release fewer new products or reduce the product release frequency, which also serves this noble goal. But the best part of this will be the availability of dedicated recycling equipment for recycling companies to buy. As a mechanical engineer and product designer, I can assure you these kinds of systems are much easier to achieve than one might think. It's just not A mandatory expanse for the industrial companies, so they ignore this altogether.

One thing not mentioned here is software. I use a iPhone 7+ I bought brand it new and it still serves me well. The frustrating thing is when I want to use new software and I’m prompted with a warning that it won’t run in my phone. I understand that I have an older device and some things require resources my phone may not have.
I think backwards compatibility is large portion of this problems that is being ignored.
In addition it’s a big selling point for new devices. “Oh that won’t run in your current phone, but it will on the new iPhone”.
Use project sandcastle to run a new os.
Just because something like your iPad stoops receiving updates doesn't mean it's automatically garbage.
I got an iPhone 6+ I've been using for half a decade now and still on IOS 12 when the current IOS version is on 14.
The phone itself is fine just missing some features which I don't need.

A follow up would be doing a piece on the e waste that is sent to Africa and other countries where it is burned releasing toxin's polluting the air and the people who do it. The system is getting better but so much more still needs to be done.

Have been using my Sony Xperia Z2 for nearly 6 years now, never felt the need to buy a new one, as it can do basically everything a modern smartphone does.
i've got the blackberry key 1 since 2017 so i am going into my 4th year. but for me its more habit that makes me keep phones. i don;t like learning new tactile experiences.
Yeah! I've had a OnePlus One that I used for 2½ years before the baseband began to fail (it would no longer connect to the Internet through a mobile network), then a Galaxy Note8 that I had for another 2½ years before it became very slow and had annoying input lag issues (where it would often think I was holding down on a button on screen when I wasn't), and am now using an Xperia 1 II that, with the high price, I hope is supported for at least the same amount of time Google supports Pixel phones for, but with an earphone jack and no annoying screen cutout. I still have the 2 other phones, as I repurposed the first one for its camera and storage, and am still in the process of recovering my data from the other, after which I'll repurpose that too.

It's not just Apple. It's a problem across the entire tech industry. Tractors, cars, ebikes, wheelchairs, laptops, phones, and even most of the healthcare industry, just to name a few. We need to go back to a society that values repairing things instead of relying on manufacturers

You have removed the ability of owners to decide which products they want to use by allowing old devices to not work without the app stores for mobiles.
And you allow back doors into cpu chips is a huge security risk, and makes the entire computer useless at that point.

My grandmother bought me my first smartphone in 2013 when I was 15. In 2017 because it broke I bought a new one for about 250$ and ever since then I haven't bought a new phone.
Electronics need to last far more than 4 years to start dealing with e waste.
Repairs are gonna cost as much as a new phone.
Well easy:
Make it fixable, make it reusable, make it upgradable, and when it inevitably runs out of usability then make sure every device is sold with a plan for recycling. It doesn't have to be fancy, having an online-available tested and proven approach to destroying and reclaiming the valuable parts of E-waste for recycling centers would provide immense benefit. Having a dedicated E-waste recycle stream, local incentives to put E-waste in those recycle streams, and local/state investment in recycling is helpful as well.

I remember when you couple replace your battery, then they started making them just as costly as the phone, then they started making the phones so you can't open them at all with out special tools and now batteries widely unavailable.
iFixit. They most likely have it. The last i bought was for a pixel 2 xl, it was $39.99 with the screen adhesive and tools needed for the repair. They also have step by step repair guides on their website, as well as videos of repair on RUclips.
I was using a Samsung Galaxy S5 up until a few months ago when it wouldn't accept a battery charge (even with a new battery). Now I'm using some Samsung J7 or something. Works for me.

I'm also using older computer monitors and a mechanical keyboard from 2013, I had an off-brand computer mouse I bought in 2009 or 2010, that lasted around roughly 2017 or 2018 or so.
Oh, I should mention that my dad is still using an iPhone 6S, with the only issue being that it can't connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices, but 5GHz Wi-Fi still works and he doesn't really care, and he also uses an iPad 5th generation.
While Amazon only seems to support their Kindle e-readers for a few years before stopping updates, Kobo seems to support their e-readers with new firmware updates for as long as they can. The oldest device they still update is the Kobo Touch (originally launched as "Kobo eReader Touch Edition"), while they likely dropped support for the original "Kobo eReader" and Kobo Wi-Fi ("Kobo Wireless eReader") because they didn't have touch screens, and likely dropped support for the Kobo Mini because it was their only device with a 5" display. When they dropped support for the latter, they still allowed them to be synced manually through their desktop app like can be done with all their other models, which can come in handy in certain rare situations where Wi-Fi wasn't an option and/or if Adobe Digital Editions is needed, which in turn is something not supported on Kindle due to Amazon deciding to go with their own formats and proprietary DRM instead. Oh, and I find Kobo e-readers to be easier to repair than their respective Kindle counterparts.
I think Boox still supports their old e-readers with UX updates even if they can't update the underlying Android software due to the use of an older SoC for which its manufacturer never provided BSPs for a certain Android release and later.
For the record, I thought it was really cute and endearing that you did so much screen filming of your old phones rather than just using B-roll.
