  • 1619 marks the year of the first documented arrival of enslaved Africans in what’s today the United States of America. The West African country of Ghana - which was a major hub during the transatlantic slave trade - declared 2019 the year of return and is encouraging the African diaspora to visit the country. According to the country’s tourism board from January to June this year, there was a 20 per cent increase in the number of Americans visiting the country and an 11 per cent increase in visitors from the UK. But some young African Americans have decided to return for good.

Peacehapp - Accra quiet? Really? That has not been my experience. While there are fairly peaceful areas in the Cantamounts (U.S. Embassy area) East Legon & Osu, they are indeed the exception. Lapaz is noisy as hell; the traffic is loud, congested; pedestrians don’t have the right of way here, motorists do, at least that is what’s practiced. It’s quite frustrating and stressful. Just my experience. When I want peace, as I did on 9 May, I go to Cape Coast/Elmina. I absolutely love it. I could sit on the coastline of Elmina and watch and listen to the waves 24/7. I’m an African American, currently stranded (happily) in Accra, Ghana. I have been here for over four months now.

Anae O'Neal Not sure what your plans are but PLEASE GO! It’s sooooo cheap there you will spend much in Ghana Cedi but it only feels like spending a few US dollars. The Ghana Cedi is only $0.18 for every US Dollar. Most everyone speaks English. However, learning Twi is also highly encouraged.
They love Americans and listen to a lot of American music.
Honestly, they are waaaaayyyy more hospitable than Americans.
I am a white guy and they even thought I was a light skinned Ghana native from Kumasi...lol 😂
Well, it’s because they were impressed with how well I was able to pick up the basics of the local language Twi.
My now girlfriend is a Fante/Ashanti mix and she has helped me learn some of the words.
But yes, please go to Ghana. Immerse yourself in the culture and stay as long as you can. The people are just way too good here.
Oh...by the way, you might pick up a bad habit as I did. Everyone here says “Ooohhh...Ok!” Like whether they agree, disagree or don’t even understand! It’s hilarious! I found myself saying it. And you might too. Pay close attention.
Well, I wish you the best. Hardest part is saving for the trip, getting your visa and the yellow fever shot. Once you do that, you are golden!

Naima Kumi I agree. But when I say I’m African, some continental Africans here in America get upset. I FULLY understand that I am African. But I’m culturally African American. Trust me, i am proud of our ancestors, I am proud of the beauty our ancestral land posses, and I am proud of the people we are. We are the salt of the world. Much love 💜

Naima Kumi my ancestors are African. But we can not disregard the fact that I am CULTURALLY(not racially) American. And that’s ok. That doesn’t make me any less proud of my africanness. Culturally I am different from a continental African. Just like culturally Nigerians are different from Ghanaians and Ghanaians are different from Kenyans and Kenyans are different from South Africans and South Africans are different from Trinidadians, etc. but we’re all African. Me calling myself African American is just to draw a distinction between history and culture. That’s it. YES we are all African. I’ve already said that and I’ve deeply expressed how proud I am to be African. I can be proud of being African while ALSO being proud of the culture black people have made for themselves here in America. One is not greater than the other. And me calling myself African American doesn’t make me any less proud of my lineage.

Black Americans are spiritual by nature and their evil anti black system is nothing but poison.

Actually, I as a NON-BLACK person want to see Africa flourish !
BUT for that to happen, the following prerequisites must be met:
      1) The entire continent NEEDS to adopt either Christianity or Buddhism!
      2) Make English the official language, rather the ONLY language that could be spoken in the entire continent!
      3) Make education till undergraduate level a COMPULSORY thing !
      4) BAN that rap music which glorifies vulgarity and violence, mind u I'm not at all against sex. In fact, sex-positive thinking MUST be encouraged!
ONCE all these prerequisites r met, THEN the entire African continent will become a magnet to the whole world. The FIRST thing that will happen is the tourism revenue that the continent would be able to realize will be BEYOND expectations. SECOND, the increased tourism WILL project Africa as the next hub for entrepreneurs from around the world given the potential size of the market. THIRD, the prosperity that WILL ensue will help the various African govts to focus MORE on the prerequisites being STRENGTHENED, leading to a virtual cycle of development and prosperity !
PLEASE my fellow beings of the continent, SPREAD this message !

And if you are saying this based on the things the media has fed you, therefore you think Africa is just made up of poor and dirty kids, you just need to gain some knowledge about the Continent. Of course, just like every other Continent Africa has its rich and poor societies but I can tell you for a fact that a good sum of countries in Africa have a very good percentage of people who are living as middle classed citizens( which means they are wealthy enough to live a very good and comfortable lifestyle.)

No it’s not surprising really....the projected and promoted view of the African continent in the west, is one of poverty, famine, wars, corruption, and incompetent governments. The really sad part is that there are even black people in the west who believe this. I live in the U.K. I am of Caribbean heritage, but a large part of my family by marriage is Ghanaian. I have been to Ghana several times, and I cannot emphasise enough the feeling of belonging you have when you go there, as mentioned in the video you are not a black woman/man you are just a man. It sounds trivial, and many people will not fully understand it until they experience it for themselves. Everyone should go back, at least once in their lives...it may sound like a cliche, but I honestly don’t think I fully understood who I was until I made that journey.

I just read an article about how all the locals hate the Americans and was absolutely laughing. If you think somehow you are "coming home" just because you have roots from a place you have no idea what culture and identity actually means. Just because a guy name O'Brien goes to Ireland it doesn't mean he's "coming home". I mean if you want to immigrate fine but be realistic about the fact you are a foreigner moving to a country that unlike America is not designed to accept immigrants.

And most American's don't want to be going there to ive the same as most poor rural Ghanaians or Nigerians. If Ghana's economy is so good for most Ghanaians why do so many of them want to move to Nigeria (both legally and illegally).
