- I thought I'd do an informative vlog to share some of the problems and issues that I have had with my M140i since ownership and how the dealership and BMW have resolved the problems.
Let me know if you guys and girls have had similar or other problems with yours!

“Propa dirty isn’t it” reminds me of taaj from come fly with me
+LMFAO hahahaha thanks mate... Hopefully made you laugh
Pro trick: you can watch movies at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Jayce Matthias definitely, have been using flixzone for years myself :)
Good to see you posting a video on your M140i.
+15october91 thanks. I had to bring it back lol
There is a yellow coolant level indicator inside that you check when the engine is cold, it literally says min and max. Very easy to do and not a problem as you don't check when engine is hot mate..
Nice video. I too have had the MPE fitted with chrome pipes and mine stick out quite a bit too. You do get used to them though!
+JD Car Finance and AV thanks mate. You right you do get used to them. I quite like them as they are. Each to their own I guess
The coolant tank is black on almost every other BMW. The way to check the coolant level is. If you open the cap theres a float that rises to the top telling you your coolant level. If it doesn't rise or u can see it's low then fill the tank with coolant and the float will rise.
+Hassan Raza that's useful to know. I was doing a vlog on a M135i yesterday and on that car (N55 engine) the coolant bottle is clear.... Thanks for your comment.... It's very useful.
I have the coolant low issue, looking online it appears to be a common issue. I only added a mug and a half of water and it’s fine. Going to book it in tomorrow to get it looked at.
Can’t wait to get mine soon Insha Allah
Inshaallah bro
Good video mate. Where did you get that spoiler?
Same snags with my M140i - rear offside constantly losing pressure, and low coolant warning came up, and unbelievably, coolant below the min mark ! Never had a car that drinks coolant like this one ! first service in a couple of weeks so will flag up the snags.
Be interesting to see what your dealership says about the low tyre pressure. My coolant level was OK.... They changed the charge cooler as pointed out in the Vid. It was -8c when the warning came on. Mine is also due a service in a few weeks.
Good video~ my car has the same issue with the coolant. i think i was driving behind you some day around Birmingham 😎
Sounds lovely. My sis has the 340i, great 6 cyl sound, she also had the same low coolant issue. Not sure how its been sorted tho.
+step0601 might be a sticky sensor. That could throw up an error too
It's the coolent cap
Interesting to hear a few good ownership points... Sounds like you've been well looked after by BMW? Nice spec on the M140
Thanks... Yes quite a high spec on this. BMW have looked after me quite well in honesty. Have bought a few cars of that dealership in a short period of time recently though.
Great vid man, which bmw branch did you take it to get your issues fixed?
+AshHorton88 hi mate. I bought the car from sytner Birmingham so all work has been carried out by them too.
my M140i said the same last week low coolant very common with the new M140i engine especially during winter .. Mate u have to open the coolant Lid and on the inside there is Min and Max levels, Larger Coolant tank is Blue and the smaller coolant tank is Red. yes M140i has 2 coolants and make sure you wait till engine cools down if you decide to open it. and buy coolants only from BMW.
Very useful to know..... Though the dealership told me the coolant level was spot on and the cold weather threw up a sensor error. They did change the intercooler though.....
Same here with my 340i, vacuum test done at the dealership no leak found. I just check both coolant reservoirs from time to time and I add coolant as needed. Always coolant on cold engine and use only BMW coolant mixed with distilled water 50/50.
Great vid mate, I also have the same issue with a rattling exhaust, which only appears on cold start up and when the car hasn’t been used for a few days. Like you gonna try and get BMW to exchange it for the MPE. Haven’t experienced any other issues to date after 8 months of ownership.
+Gary murdoch I'm sure the MPE system are being offered for free now as a fix.
DownShift Throttle thanks for the reply I’ll give it a gob
Or should I say a go!!!
+Gary murdoch lol
Had same issue on my f80 m3 I just got coolant from BMW topped up and its fine. B4 booking in with the BMW top up avoiding big bucks to bm if your out of warranty
I owned a M140i for 2 years and never had the wheel issue. I did however have the exhaust rattle issue and BMW Australia said that it was normal. The rattle was the only issue I had with the vehicle. Did you ever sort out your tyre pressure issue? What BMW said is BS
Tyre issue was a leaking valve which was sorted. Thanks for your comment. The exhaust is a common fault
Check the tyre valve it could be leaking slowly. I had that before
+starryvoyage thanks buddy will do
stones go through the fronts grill all the time and hit the intercooler get smaller mesh for the back of the grill its a easy job
Yup.... Might have to. Seen it's done easily
You should just check your coolant level when your car cools down
I love the car man! i do think you should get that tyre looked at by a third-party though, my car doesnt lose preasure like that and i am on a few bmw forums a lot, never seen people saying that particular wheel is losing preasure.
+Cynical Robot thanks mate.... I'm having it looked at this week. Thanks for commenting!
Great car, best car for the money
Check the coolant when the engine is cool. When you unscrew the coolant cap, a floating indicator rises up informing you of the coolant level.
+CarGH nice one! I'll do that cheers!
Eco mode..... nah sport+ love it. 😂
+rene kantiani hahaha..... Yea eco pro mode, I'd rather drive a city car!
tyre pressure on 125d is same stuff from time to time when do wheeles on roundabauds 😀
The tyre pressure going down has nothing to do with a LSD or lack thereof. If the tyre is losing pressure it'll be due to either the tyre being punctured, the valve not sealing or the tyre not sealing correctly on the rim.
If I were you I'd take it back to BMW and have them sort it out :)
+ScottyDon't good tip that. I guess I'll have to
How did you get the M Performance exhaust for free?
Them pipes are sticking out well too far
+OXOCUBE54321 Yea they do a bit but I guess I've become used to them. Each to their own
Lol Yeap..... Already doing them Haha
You could check if coolant is low by opening the cap and checking wether it’s up to max inside or it’s low. 🤷♂️
When the engine is hot you should try doing that....makes sense for the bottle to be transparent to like most other cars including my 2018 F30
DownShift Throttle easy, open it slowly when hot.
Surely the exhaust is a bodge job? No way do they market it with pictures like that ?? They need pushing in two inches
Its as flush as it sits without cutting the back box pipe.
Another design flaw is: where is the oil dipstick? Hahaha BMW doesnt want you to be able to maintain your own car. Not only you cant check your coolant level, you cant also check your engine oil level. You have to reply on sensors and computers until they go bad.
+saauuzza lol yes..... No dipstick.
I drive tells you oil level does it not?
Yes idrive tells you oil level and you can check it at anytime
A little confused, did you have a M-Performance exhaust and then they replaced it? Or did they replace the stock exhaust with a M-Performance exhaust free of charge?
Had issues with the stock exhaust which they replaced with the M Performance one free of charge
hey bro just wandering do you live near or around solihull ?
+mrcurrypot1 close enough mate.
Curious now.
My 67 plate Shadow developed a rear knock after a few months. I thought that it was the tailgate (so did BMW) ..... could it be the exhaust? Never thought of that.
Never had any probs with the tyre pressure and I check the water level every month. The units have always been black.
My main concern is the noise level inside! Unless the media player is wound well up, the Harmon Kardon is a waste of time when travelling at speeds over 40mph!
Hmm... Check my other video as I've highlighted the knocking squeaky noises there....ill throw the link in below.
The coolant tanks were clear in the M135i and they should have kept them like that in here..... But I guess they wanted to make the engine bay look neater. HK is decent. It's not as good as the HK in my 3 series but that does have more speakers and equaliser.
Check out my 1 Year review Vid for knocking....

1 Year review Vid....
@@DownShiftThrottle What link ?
@@glamill51 the one in the comment above... Or just watch my 1 Year review on the M140i....
I've already wound cardboard round the boot striker plate - and that didn't stop the knock! Bloody hard to open the tailgate until I took it off !!!
Those exhausts... BMW have not fitted those right. My MPE on the 140i needed adjusting after the dealer fitted it. It looks like a wheelbarrow.
👍🏼
How did you have the MPE free of charge?! I needed to pay for mine...
+MrArthur lol.... Its not who you know or what you know.... It was just pot luck with me. I was offered it and I took it up. No quibble. Perhaps they looked at my repeat business with them but I doubt that made any difference.
The way you can check your coolant level is just to turn off the cap and there is an indicator inside. BMW probably made you pay for an inter cooler when you really didn’t need one🤣
Lol good job it was covered under warranty.
Nobody has ever paid 40k for a 135/140, TRL gives these away for pennies. Like 350 a month with a 350 deposit, like 15-17% discount. You can pick these up below 30k easy
Fernando Barbosa true, but with a list price of 40k some people are getting stumped by the £500 VED regardless of what deals are available.
22-25k now for 17/18 reg low mileage
Yup.... Bargain. Now the time.
Never had an issue with my ST after 4 years. Half the price of that too.
That's pretty good going. Just don't buy the RS..... Notoriously renowned for issues.....
Half the price half the car pal
A limited slip differential has nothing to do with your tyre losing pressure. He's talking shite 😂.
A wheelbarrow lol
+malik kahn Yea that's the look.
Hi I’ve had the same issue with my exhaust it’s due back in 9th April hopefully they will change it for an mpe, I was wondering how much did it cost to get your rear lights tinted looks really good An where please? if you don’t mind me asking thanks.
Nathan Leon Townsend rear lights tinted from WMC in bham. Can't remember exactly but I think about £80. They're not film tinted but they're sprayed
Hi new flash try reading book pack which shows you how to check coolant level if this too much stop passing comteat
Oh
"coolant low" and then suggests it was an oil cooler or an intercooler... coolant doesnt flow through either of these things.
The tyre pressure monitor sensor in the wheel could be the issue and it needs to be seated properly. The warranty should take care of that. at least ask them to check it.
However, my car will loose pressure if the traction control has kicked in as it is quite harsh, the other day the back end slid out to the right under full throttle and the TCS corrected it and then I noticed I had lost a couple of pounds in the outside tyre which will have taken the full brunt of the correction as the car snapped back into line.
I have taken to over inflating the tyres by a couple of pounds now which seems to help.
Did you buy it tune m8
No I bought it brand new so it was stock
You'll have someone's eye out with them tail pipes sticking out like that.....😁
Is yours the shadow edition? If not are your rear tail light darkened
+Ghost mine is not the shadow edition. It's a 2017 model and I had the lights tinted on the rear before the shadow edition made it debut.... Sods law lol
DownShift Throttle it’s an awesome looking car, especially the colour combo you have it in, congrats mate. I’m waiting for mine now, so excited lol.
Ghost hopefully the wait is not too painful lol
Why would you want a transparent coolant reservoir? Coolant levels should be measured when the car is cold...and when it is you can simply remove the reservoir cap and peer in at the level indicator which gives you a min and max indication.
PS the low coolant issue is common the F2x B58 equipped vehicles. Most appear to have been as a result of an underfill from the factory, some are from a batch of poor fitting reservoir cap seals and a minority are as result of radiator leaks/turbo coolant hose leaks.
+Bestwick1983 I wonder why then you get an transparent coolant bottle on most other cars.... Hmmm maybe perhaps so that you can see the level without having to open the cap.....
Either way...there was no coolant leak on my car other than a 'suspect' charge cooler that was replaced under warranty.
I'm looking at a new car, well 2nd hand. One for me instead of Mway cars now, my commute will be reduced from 60 miles to 2.5 miles each way.
Currently looking at M140i, M235i or M135i. 3 doors , £22.5K cash buy. I've no experience of BM's, but the car is one I'm considering keeping a fair while and modding properly to at least stage 2. No kids and economy isn't an issue now.
Just after people's thoughts.
Prev cars I've owned for an idea are, now and older...
E350 CDI 265 AMG line - nice cruiser, shifts! But heavy
A4 se tdi - 143 mapped to 181, needed it, ok, but boring mmi is shit, no end of problems, even dpf @ 90k even with my miles.
Mk4 golf 130 GT tdi - ugly, but great little car, work horse, good on fuel, went when needed, did over 140k in it, virtually fault free.
IS200 - ok, bit boring, nob faults.
200sx S13 - last car for me! Modded heavily (ND330 conversion) , very fast, a lot of fun.
Astra sport 1.8 sport - ok..
S3/RS3 don't appeal
A45 - can't get over the super glued look of the dash screen.
Honda's - too plasticy
RS too chavvy.
Golf R - ok, but mate owns one, want something different.
It's more for me, a drivers car, sub 5 secs. Does well modding,
335d sounds good, shifts, but don't need a diesel, not a petrol sound. 335i ok, but not as sporty as 1,2 series.
I thought of older M5 or M6, but don't want M5/6 tax or service bills ect.
Any thoughts welcome.
+MrDjsy69 honestly if you have no kids and economy is not an issue go the whole hog and buy a proper M car!

I work for bmw drive these all tome but pref my s3 any day. Very nice cars quick when mapped but shite in wet non of that problem in my s3 and always wet up north.
Surely your tyre has a puncture
+THEG12EG nope no punctures
DownShift Throttle could be the valve.. needs to.be put in water
+THEG12EG I'll give it a try.... Thanks for pointing out
my mate has done 2 track days and blew the box
Ouch that cannot be good. I bet BMW would be awkward about repairing under warranty
We always remove plates when we go to track days. The dealer is honoring it so no issues there. The ZF is normally pretty robust so I find it quite odd.
Agree, the ZF is a robust gearbox and never heard or read about them going wrong. I guess just like any mechanical component some do go wrong. Glad it's sorted for your mate!
Wheelbarrow lol
It was....
there may be a defect in your rim.
I thought that too but everything seems OK. It's weird as I have the same issue on rear left tyre pressure on my F30 3 series.
DownShift Throttle you should put the rear wheels on the front of they are the same size and see if it still looses air
Unfortunately the rear wheels are staggered. I might swap the rears around with each other to see what happens.
DownShift Throttle yea i thought they might be staggered. The dealers excuse is bullshit though. The type of differential will have no effect on loosing air. The only way a tyre can loose air is. Pourous rim defect. Valve stem defect or puncture.
The fitting of the exhaust needs sorting. The sound is amazing but the fitment is shocking. That would put me off straight away. Get a Akrapovic or Remus.
+Matthew Purdy they do stick out a bit. I've got used to them now. I was think akropovic but can't argue with a free upgrade lol
I love the cars. I have a m135i myself LCI. Perhaps would look into a m140i after I have enjoyed this one. The Remus sounds immense and Akrapovic even better on the m140i 👍👍👌
Get back to a Honda mate ;)
+DC5dotty lol.... No car is perfect.
Looser! Why did you buy this beautiful car anyway. Nothing is perfect. You don't deserve this car
Says the guy who can only dream of owning it...
Fukin hell gerto 🤣🤣🤣 u need ya bollox emptying fella
Another M140i video 😴 .....love these cars but thanks to TRL selling 50 of them a week I bet they’re worth sod all second hand now and every poor sod that’s bought one will almost definitively be in negative equity when they change it. Too common now IMO
+Paul Marsh hence why pcp is the way to buy
+Paul Marsh hence why pcp is the way to buy
DownShift Throttle whoever sold you that clearly never explained PCP to you. PCP doesn’t alleviate negative equity mate. You either loose the £2k or £3k deposit you put in at the beginning or when you come to swap for another. The worst thing now is dealers are building this negative equity into new deals and it will become a downward spiral,
+Paul Marsh OK no worries mate. Just think about the driving experience and not worry too much about the depreciation otherwise you'll never buy what you want.
Sure...like I say I love the M140I, the only real way to really get your monies worth is to buy one and keep it long term, 10-15years etc.
if you love cars, wouldnt you like cars that are well made?? 🤔🤔🤔... Not this BMW crap right here?!! 🤔 just saying guys!!
Your main problem is that you own a shitty 1 series. That’s what poor people buy 😐
+D L lol.... My problem is not as big as yours as you have actually made an effort and taken your time to post a comment. Lmfao
DownShift Throttle Took me about 5secs, 10 max
+D L it's not about the time..... Anyway I don't consider myself a rich guy instead I'm grateful for everything I have.... Including this poor man's 1 series so your comments don't hurt. Hope you can learn too.
What do you consider poor? pa salary..?
MrDjsy69 is that a question for me? No one is poor in this world. Even the richest of the rich will still think what they have is not enough. The poorest person on this earth will still have something that the next person may not, there's a fine balance between health and wealth but some people won't consider it. Anyway this is meant to be a motoring channel! 👍🏽
Good video mate. Where did you get that spoiler?
