This movie completely permeated the culture at a startup I worked at in 1999. We moved into our offices for the first time, had a pizza and movie night our first week to hangout & get to know everyone, and watched Office Space together. We had the Office Space kits (red swingline staplers, cover sheets for TPS reports, mats where you could jump to conclusions…all of it. We used so many quotes from the movie too.
I was promised a piece of cake.
    Ummmm…..did you get the memo…
Sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Muuuundays! All of them.
We were acquired within 6 months. I was a paper millionaire for 7 gorgeous months but couldn’t sell any of my stock for a year and then the dot-com bubble burst. Good times. In hindsight, if I had fallen into $2-3M at 25 years old, would have been found dead of a heart attack snorting cocaine off of a stripper’s boobs in Las Vegas.

Mike Judge was an engineer before he found success writing for tv and movies, which is why this movie is so accurate. He's said in interviews that pretty much every character in this movie was just a slightly exaggerated version of real people he has known. Even minor characters like Jennifer Anniston's boss, who incidentally he plays.

So despite knowing a lot of the jokes for most of my life, I only ever saw this movie in its entirety within the last year, and it really resonated with me in a way I didn't expect. I'm in my late twenties, and I've done heavy physical labor jobs, retail jobs, and office jobs, and each one I've found to be a unique form of hell. It's given me a pretty toxic relationship with work culture, and I've found myself saying similar things to Peter ("I don't know why I can't just go to work and be happy") I'm sure plenty of people would call me lazy or entitled, but I really don't believe it's right to have to subject yourself to that kind of punishment just to afford rent and groceries, let alone a few nice things to make life a little more bearable, until we die. So to see Peter reach a kind of peaceful coexistence, a positive equilibrium with work culture at the end, it actually moved me.
I know it isn't as simple as 'work in construction' or 'steal a bunch of money from a corporation that won't miss it' (I don't believe I'm capable of either) but it feels just a little bit more like an achievable goal for me after seeing this film. In the last year and a half I've made strides to work in my chosen field (I'm a writer), and while it isn't something I can do full time yet, my progress also isn't nothing and I keep trying to remind myself of that. It's very possible I might just have to keep working odd jobs until I'm a sad old man, maybe publishing a successful novel or two if I'm lucky before then, but I really believe I can find some semblance of peace on my way there. This movie was a part of making that happen, so I think it's always gonna be special to me.

SIDENOTE: Stephen Root (the actor who plays Milton) is an underrated GEM of an actor. Seriously, he's one of my favorite actors and I hope I get to tell him that someday (I'm normally adverse to meeting celebrities at places like conventions so that's a big deal for me) Whenever I see him pop up in something, or hear his voice in animated media, I'm honestly elated. I'd love to see him play Doctor Octopus in the MCU as I think he's perfect for the role, although I don't know if that's realistic.
