    On Ashley feeling scared in the suburbs. When you are in a city there are more "eyes on the street". Everybody is watching everybody so if someone does something that would be threatening, for the most part, people are going to know about it and be judgy. Its not a perfect system but you also are more accepting of other people's differences in the city since you have no choice but to be surrounded by different types of people. In the burbs, historically, who your neighbors are has been more of a choice. V interesting convos! Love this episode sm

    grew up in NYC in my middle school and high school years in midtown! Yes, I did have to apply to middle school and high schools and I went to regular public ones (not the specialized stem or arts high schools, though I did apply…) so usually they would put you mostly likely in schools within your “zone”, but you will still have a fair chance to go to another school uptown or elsewhere depending on your application. For my middle school, I went to my zoned school, and for high school, I applied to a few schools within and outside my zone, but still went to a high school within my zone.

    Born and raised In Brooklyn, New York, Specifically on the west end (completely different from Williamsburg) in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, Im surrounded by a melting pit of races. In 4th grade had to apply to my Middle school Christa Mcauliffe and was in the Arts Program. Didn’t make it to a specialized HS but went to my local HS FDR, which ifykyk. It was dangerous, fights would break out, metal detectors… we had over 4,500+ kids in one school, so switching periods was crazy. - Now that im 30 I can definitely say Ive lived multiple lives and had to grow up quick. I learned how to stand up and defend myself and overall im “aggressive” to most but thats just how New York Raised me. - NYC gave me opportunities that I know no where would’ve but now I want out. I just need someplace to keep peace for more than 3 days

    grew up in queens in a minority neighborhood anddd its very different i guess from your guys school system because all of nyc is in a pool of competition in terms of school starting from middle school, so kids that come from a wealthy background likely had better resources and those who didn't weren't necessarily left behind, but were placed in schools that were known to be the "bad schools" if they weren't able to do well on their own. when i went to hs, i went to a pretty regular hs and didn't have any focus like art, culinary, stem, even aviation, and i regret going to the school i chose bcoz i feel like i could've learned something other than the regular hs curriculum and also compared myself to other students my age that were able to have those experiences.

    brushing off the crazy and very unsafe things in new york is definitely some people's coping mechanism when dealing with an unsafe environment (i'm from toronto and our subway is quite scary these days especially after the pandemic and brushing off the severity of incidents is how some ppl cope here as well)
    def relate to what amber was saying about feeling unsafe and always being alert in NY as someone from toronto (and its illegal to carry pepper spray here 😭) - i wish more ppl understood that it's actually not normal at all to be so vigilant all the time (even if just subconsciously) and have to deal with scary situations while just doing mundane things like walking on the sidewalk or commuting. there are other way more bustling and crowded cities than NY and Toronto all across the globe that do not have the mental health and violence on the subway/streets issue. other cities in countries like australia, or some in east asia etc have figured it out but we in these north american cities seems to think its just a normal part of "big cities" 😔
    of course mentally its better to not focus on all the negative news stories for sure but it is not normal at all to have to deal with these sorts of situations in our cities that we call home

    • @jimbo1637
      @jimbo1637 Месяц назад

      Large cities aren't nearly as dangerous as the media makes them seem. Idk about Toronto, but but in NYC you're an orders of magnitude more likely to be hit by a car than you are to be attacked on the subway, it's just that the media reports on every single subway assault but not traffic deaths.

      Relatable. Australian here! I live in Melbourne and the safety in the urban areas have just DROPPED. Same reason w/ post COVID, more drug abused users, homelessness, gangs etc. Truly feels like a global phenomenon in the west. When I visited China & Japan, I felt relieved.

    for public transportation in nyc, we were provided metro cards that gave 3 free rides and 1 transfer during the weekdays only~ I used to love taking the bus to my high school bc i was able to sleep on the way there, gave me an extra 30-40 min nap. To add on, I had to apply to about 10 public high schools in 8th grade.

    @stephaniecolon4691 2 месяца назад +2

    The school’s aren’t necessarily private, like you don’t have to pay to go to the school but you do have to be accepted in through the admissions process. Anyone can apply because the applications don’t have fees but not everyone is accepted

    5 years ago I moved from suburbs in Richmond, VA to Rotterdam in the Netherlands for art school and it was the craziest decision but I ended up loving this city, it’s busy in the center but so chill outside of that and I love the buildings and the fact that there’s always something to see and do.
    I figured after high school, if not now, then when? But you always have the choice to pack up and move and live in a new place no matter how scary it seems you can always just try and move again if you wanna try something else!

    The school system is def diff than other places. My K-8grade. Worked as a lottery system (& the fact that it was a charter school) only since there were so many applications here BUT if you had a sibling that graduated than you got in very easy. (Literally like legacy colleges) Applying for school starts at kindergarten then 6 grade (if you don’t go to a combined grade school). The SAT isn’t called that before you go to high school. They’re called state tests and every grade would have one from kindergarten to 8rd it got more important calculating gpa from 5 grade if you wanted to get in the best high school. The high school equivalent to those state tests were called regents & it helped you be placed in honor classes or take college classes earlier. Some schools even had Saturday school. I genuinely hated that. it might’ve been only my high school where it was 9am-9pm similar to cram schools. My high school was public and not all of them are equal.
    Thinking back it’s literally ridiculous what my school life was like I think it was almost like college from the very beginning. Since kids did everything adults did hanging out in the city & def boroughs. You’re essentially a mini adult. But this also depends heavily on the school you’re in mine was focused allot on stem like classes before they were called that. & not I do nothing related to that😂😂 I’m an artist

    BRO Ashley I hate staying alone in a big house in the suburbs. It was the worst moving home after college because I feel so much safer in my concrete block of an apartment. I want to move to New York one day , Mississippi makes New York looks it was birth from heaven, I went there for a choir concert, it was very much unsettling ,but honestly I'd take walking alone at 2am in New york compared to walking alone broad daylight in Mississippi 😭😭 the possibility are endless here , you could get caught in gang activity , or chased by a wild animal wether its a bear , deer , or dog or get kidnapped , or worse run into racists white men

    I Grew up as a child in nyc & it wasn’t scary if you were here 2019 and under. Like the trains were safe and hardly feared from homeless ppl cause all they did was ask for change and keep to themselves. People even was out doing work on their MacBooks and stuff. But now??? I would hardly ever think about the trains it’s so dangerous. Walking at night was never that scary even if you were in the hood cause there was more moral compasses and respect. I just think it got overall worst bc of housing and quality of life 😅 I would never want to grow up here how it is now compared to back in the day (im literally only 24 but the difference is night and day)
