  • In this video I cover the basics of top turning and my process for it
    After I finished this video, I actually had a block of wood fly past my me missing my face by less then 2 feet, during the point where I said is the danger point
    Any advice or requests please leave a comment since I’m learning how to do this
    Please keep it polite, I’m know I’m not a professional

    Throw away the saw & part them off with the spindle gouge. A well made top will spin upside down too, if a there is a small point on top of it's shaft.

    Tops are great practise, the top turning challenge is to turn a top, spin it and y turn the next one before it stops 😁

    The start windings on your motor are possibly bad. You may want to look into a new motor or if it has a capacitor on it, you may want to check to see if it has gone bad and change it out. Your motor shouldn't start up that way.

    • @kevincraftOH
      @kevincraftOH  Год назад

      Start up what way?
      That’s how it’s started since I bought it

    • @Ivegotwormsinme
      @Ivegotwormsinme Год назад +1

      @@kevincraftOH That hesitation, man. With 110v motors, especially with a lathe, they should power up immediately. When you have a motor that does that, it usually means that the start windings are bad. It doesn't mean that the motor is unusable, because clearly it isn't. It means that when you turn it on, you're always going to get that "stutter" before it spins to the proper velocity. It can absolutely happen with a new motor; all it takes is for a single strand of copper to be out of sync with the rest and then boom, slow start. I work with, on, and wire up 100v and 12v electric motors as my profession and I've only ran into a few that truly had bad start windings and they did exactly what your lathe is doing. By all means, please don't take what I'm telling you as any form of negativity; you and I both have the love for the craft and I respect you enough to say something when I see something, you know?

    • @Ivegotwormsinme
      @Ivegotwormsinme Год назад +1

      @@kevincraftOH Oh, and I forgot that it could be a start capacitor that's causing that. If you look at your motor and it has a "horn" (what we call it) sticking out of the side of it, that's a capacitor housing. If you pull out the capacitor (it's easy, it's only 2 wires and just about impossible to screw up) you can check it with a voltage meter and make sure it's on the up and up. Truth be told, it's more likely that would wind up being the problem rather than the start windings on the motor. It happens, man, sometimes you get a faulty motor. I see hundreds of them a season and at least a dozen of those 500 or so are gonna give me some kind of problem.

      @@Ivegotwormsinme I’m not taking it negatively at all, was just confused, I’ll definitely look into that
      I knew I had a bad direction switch on it too that I believe I replaced after that video was recorded

    • @Ivegotwormsinme
      @Ivegotwormsinme Год назад

      @@kevincraftOH YEP! So the directional switch is tied directly to what windings that are on your motor. You 100% have bad start windings. I just hope that you can warranty that motor. Please let me know what you decide to do. If I can help out any more, don't hesitate to ask.
