Thanks for the great variety of idea and tops, i am going to show my wood students this video and get them to try these, much appreciated, regards John Eaves.
I used to make them for prizes on hotdog day at school. I made hundreds of them for the school over the 8 + years that my kids were there. My kids would colour them with the sharpie markers also. Now I have grandchildren. Got to get back at it. I really like your designs. I will have to try some of them soon. Take care and stay safe. From: Petawawa, Ontario , Canada.
That’s great! I’m glad you like my designs. Although I have no idea what hotdog day at school is. Is that something that happens in Canada? Just curious 👀. Thanks for watching!
Really like your top ideas; however, for safety gear 2:07 I'd recommend wearing more protective shoes than Crocs - I've dropped sharp tools and I could've seriously jabbed my foot if not wearing protective footwear. Just something to keep in mind. You make the cutting look so easy... nice work!
Thanks so much for your concern for me! I don’t generally wear crocs when I’m turning anymore. It’s wonderful to highlight that it is the responsibility of the woodturner to always evaluate his or her own safety. I’m glad you like my ideas as well!
How would you go about doing a dreidel shaped top? I imagine that you would leave the blank square, but aside from that aim curious what your process would be.
Awesome!!! I have just started my woodturning hobby. I have own maked lathe. I am little bit amateur but learn more and more. 🙂 I dont have that four jaw chuck but I hope I can make these without it. Those chucks are so expensives! ☹️
Thanks for subscribing! To answer your question I generally start with a 2 inch by 2 inch piece. If I use a 5 inch long blank I can usually get 2 tops that are roughly 2 inches tall.
I generally make tops from a 2 inch blank, but you can go smaller or larger. I go about 6 or 7 inches on the length so I can make 2 tops at a time. One right after the other. 😀
Great tutorial.

Great I hope it sparks some ideas for your students!

Your videos are informative and right to the point. Thank you!
Thanks. When I watch videos, I don’t like all the extra fluff either. So I try to make them to the point. 😊
Love your video! You are the Bob Ross of turning videos!

Awesome job on the video
Great fun project
You are ao well spoken
Thanks! Good to hear.
How would you go about doing a dreidel shaped top? I imagine that you would leave the blank square, but aside from that aim curious what your process would be.
I’m not sure 🤔. I’m not too familiar with dreidels. I can imagine it is as you say leaving the middle square and turning the ends.
Awesome!!! I have just started my woodturning hobby. I have own maked lathe. I am little bit amateur but learn more and more. 🙂
I dont have that four jaw chuck but I hope I can make these without it. Those chucks are so expensives! ☹️
It’s great that you made a lathe! Most things can be done without a chuck!
I really enjoyed your process of making spinning tops. What wood dimensions do you start with and end up with. Thank you. I just subscribed 👍

Oh no! Now you need to make a razor! Great video thank you.
Ha ha that’s actually a good idea. Even if I may not use it! 😉 I need to keep my face warm this winter 🥶
What is the size of your square blank
I generally make tops from a 2 inch blank, but you can go smaller or larger. I go about 6 or 7 inches on the length so I can make 2 tops at a time. One right after the other. 😀
Very nice tutorial.
Good work...both the tops & the video; and you have a great voice. What's the diameter of the wood?
Thanks so much! The diameter of this piece of wood was 2 inches. I have made them bigger and smaller though. 😃
I made 230 for the NYS Fair and we sold them and gave the money to charity.
Nice! 230 takes some time! What a wonderful thing to do!
So how much do you charge for the tops
@@blumax413 We charge $4 each at the Fair and the money goes to charity.
* * * * * star
Thanks I usually only get 1 Star ⭐️
the crocks are not worksite safe
Yes You are right. I’ve been called on this before. I’m going to have to report myself to the boss. 🤣 No really I don’t generally do this anymore.
