      Irene I understand what you say and have a lot of respect for the front office employees but from a passenger's view point really the opposite feeling - I can document a catalogue of blunders but notable ones - flew Business class Buenos Aries to LHR - flat bed would collapse , second incident LHR - Mum - flat bed malfunction- no recline and on the way back entertainment screen would malfunction - compensation given - a cheap 20 pound bottle of champagne - the worst ever and lots of unhelpful smiles. Most of us in the UK fly BA as there is very little choice direct long haul. Ryanair pay peanuts get monkeys- BA pay gold nuggets get monkeys !! Alas !!!!!

    My wife started traveling to the EU a few years ago and BA was the only airline that flew non stop from San Diego to LHR so she used them. The best part was we could fly into LHR and from there, hop over to Frankfurt or Milan etc. She racked up miles by the hundreds of thousands so I started flying with her or would go solo to meet her. Having never been fortunate enough to fly first class or even business, BA was the first chance we had. The business class seats were okay with that weird arrangement but the first class seats were amazing. I know they don't compare to airlines like Emerites or some of the Asian airlines but they were nice. The 747's that flew out of San Diego were old though and clearly not what they used to be. That said, we still have hundreds of thousands of points and once this pandemic is a bit more controlled, we're excited to get back on BA.
    Oh and that Concorde lounge is sweeeet!

    My 75-year-old friend came for a 2 week Christmas visit in 2020 to my island 5000 miles from UK and left him stranded for 6 months. I’ve had a love-hate relationship with BA on many things over the years.
    Oddly enough I stopped flying them regularly soon after Alex took over, instead opting for EasyJet. However I still use BA for anywhere short haul that’s over 2.5 hours from London, like Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, etc.
    I had mixed feelings when they started charging for food and drink onboard. Good because I could now buy anything I fancied at time of flying instead of whatever was just given to me. But it also sucks because their menu options weren’t all that inspiring and I missed some of the previous complementary offerings.

    BA's big problem with their changes in a downward trajectory ( especially in the SH market) is that they have taken away the service but even with HBO fares they are nowhere near competitive with the actual LCC's. If I can get a flight from say LGW-ATH return on EZY, buy a hot sandwich, several nibbles/ snacks, 3 double spirits & mixers and throw in a quarter bottle of champagne and still be £20,40,70 better off than flying economy on BA where I get a bottle of water and a tiny pack of crisps then for most people there simply is no point paying for BA SH economy. "Cut price Cruz" stripped out the only thing that made them different and he is generally loathed, and mocked, by the airlines FF's. Many openly rejoiced when he moved on.

    The real slide in British Airways standards coincided with Alex Cruz as CEO. His policies of selling every asset that wasn’t nailed down, sub-contracting handling including IT, reducing costs to the point that the product became inferior to most competitors, selling on price, and not caring about staff morale, were all factors in the decline. Sean Doyle certainly has an uphill task to restore morale and standards.

  • @Billywhiz93
    @Billywhiz93 2 года назад +4

    Alex Cruz happened. Thats the start of the real decline. Cost-cutting everything, for shareholder gains and a complete & total disregard for staff, he tried so hard to try to turn BA into a LCC - to compete with them.
    But this is where it went wrong. There are people who want to pay the higher fare price and would rather not fly low-cost.
    Thankfully the new CEO seems to care more about the hard-working and fantastic staff here and the future is looking a little more promising.

  • @nickbiskinis4854
    @nickbiskinis4854 2 года назад +14

    Really good video here. In respect of cutting complimentary food and drink in Economy on 'short haul' it hasn't been accompanied by noticeable lower fares so overall looks like a downward trajectory underpinning the overall impression that BA doesn't know what it is trying to be - an upmarket Low Cost Carrier or a low quality premium carrier. Some of BA's 'short haul' flights (eg Larnaca to London Heathrow) can be five hours long so lack of free food (and in some instances lack of any food) reflected particularly badly. As others have said here Turkish Airlines has managed to maintain full service on European flights (a similar situation exists with Aegean Airlines) so BA's service standards did not need to fall in the way that they did. That said BA does have many things going for it: excellent safety record and heritage so that with a reorientation towards customer experience and value for money the airline can improve. BA should create a Medium Haul concept (for flights between 3-5 hours) rather than the arbitrary distinction between short and long haul

    Great video, Dan, and very informative. I really like these videos a lot!
    When I travel to Manchester in a few months, I'll be flying Virgin Atlantic. Their service is way better and less stuffy than BA.
    BA's biggest mistake was to ally itself with American. As a result, EVERYTHING has suffered greatly. Virgin Atlantic has allied itself with Delta, who has had a "people first" policy. They treat people like human beings, and that's why they're the top US carrier. Virgin has also adopted this policy, and are reaping the benefits of it. When your primary concern is the passengers, instead of butts in seats, you will have people clamouring to be a part of it. American has never learned this lesson and it seems BA has decided not to learn the lesson, either.

    I'm from the U.K. and I stopped flying British Airways fifteen years ago for the following reasons. Overpriced fares, terrible in-flight service, old dirty planes, atrocious food, bad attitude, and pure greed. It was the very first airline to charge ($200) for an emergency seat. I asked to be removed from the airline's database and will not fly with BA ever again unless there's a drastic improvement relating to all the aforementioned points.

    The truth about BA service is people were forced to pay for it in the past. With people choosing to fly Ryanair, BA had little choice but to adapt. The same is true with the US legacies when Southwest forced them to reduce fares and service too.

    0:25 I flew in those lie-flat seats! It was an exciting flight for me because I rarely fly business class.
    That same year I met the person who designed those seats. He said he hadn't flown in them himself.

    I have been considering booking a family trip back to the States with BA in Club World at Christmas. What has prevented me is that even though I am booking in the premium cabin, because I don't currently have status with BA or OneWorld, I would be forced to pay an extra $600 at least to book seats in advance on top of what I would be paying for four seats in Business! Not very customer friendly....moving on to another airline....

    Hey Dan! Maybe you could make a Video about the differences in single aisle airplane business classes. I still dont know why most european Airlines have a business class in a standard 3-3 config but others have a proper business class seat in a 2 - 2 config. Thank you! Love your channel 😊

    I'd argue that the decline of BA began somewhere before 2008 as I had the displeasure of a flight from Heathrow Cape Town which due to a protester running onto the runway meant I was stuck in an awful cramped economy seat for 13 hours. There was nothing that distinguished them from their competitors at that time for me except their higher price and the surly attitude of the cabin staff - which made seeing the Thai Airlines staff happy and smiling when I got to Cape Town compared to the miserable BA staff that much more shocking. In 2019 I got stuck flying them again from Heathrow to Milan having missed my easyJet flight from Gatwick. Many times more expensive than easyJet and basically no different in terms of quality, except that if I purchased food it was better than what I could purchase from easyJet. I would always choose a different airline than BA.

    I remember as a kid, I'd see British Airways plastered for international travel whenever my parents would look at flight options and then it just fizzled into the background since competitors like many East Asian and middle eastern airlines started rising as the new faces of long haul flights (and I guess lufthansa). So, it's super swanky to see this video ✈️

    A very good and interesting review Dan, thank you. I flew once on the old BOAC to India with my parents before it merge and change into BA. It is such a shame to see how far it has fallen from grace. I think the genesis of the decline goes back further than you suggest to the late 90's when Bob Ayling and subsequently the "poacher turned game keeper" that is Willie Walsh. In my opinion, I believe between them they ruined the brand. Interested to know your thoughts?

    As a former Manager at BA I can tell you first hand that the prestige of BA has been completely destroyed from the greed of the people at the top.. Alex Cruz absolutely obliterated whatever remained of the airlines reputation, though you are 100% correct that it was all down to the introduction of ‘Low cost’ airlines… They are what really destroyed BA

    Really enjoying your industry analysis films Non-Stop! An avid British Av Geek, I've witnessed the sad demise of BA over the last couple of decades. Its stuck in that horrid middle ground of Tier 2 airlines. Its lost its niche, and its brand. Pretty sad the way a flag carrier can go. IAG has a lot to answer for! I now chose Virgin for trans-Atlantic and will almost always go for a Middle Eastern airline for everything else.

    I use to fly BA, London via HK or Bangkok (onward flight with Vietnam Airlines) to HCMC. Cost was usually around £625 return. As you say price comes in and when the cost got up to over a £1000 return I decided to look around. With VA getting the B787, I could get the same flight but now direct for £350/425 return. Bit of a no brainer really. I can put up with naff food for 12 hours from any airline. I just made up for it on landing with the money saved. I would add the service with BA was pretty good but then that might have been because they speak English!

    This makes me glad we booked our long haul flight from CPT to ORK on KLM. We considered BA because their flights were pretty affordable and the times were great (would fit our kids sleep schedule), but the full UK visitors visa that my husband would need just to change terminals was just too costly and so much paperwork. Plus the current quarantine laws from South Africa. This confirmed we made the better choice even though we're leaving at 11pm with little ones.
    Ps - subscribed. 49 999 to go.

    Their downfall was withdrawing from operating to other UK destinations, running solely from Heathrow and Gatwick. People from Scotland, Manchester, Leeds etc who want to fly with them, simply cannot. Instead, they have to fly with Cathay, Virgin, Emirates etc. That and they also employed Willie Walsh...

    Many people here in the UK nickname British Airways "London Airways" because they barely serve anywhere in the UK outside of London. KLM in particular has a much stronger presence in most UK airports outside London. The joke is that BA stands for "Bloody Awful".
