      A REALLY great suggestion. 😃👌
Jeff Beck went a completely new way in his playing with the Stratocaster. No pick but an out of this world way of playing with the vibrato arm - wammy bar to the americans - that players like Clapton praise in high tones, while saying that it’s beyond his abilities.
“A day in the Life” live from Ronnie Scotts 👍

What’s great about this is the way Jeff can take a simple melody, in this case an early Beatles tune, and twist it into pretzel shapes without betraying the feel of the original which is how a jazz player thinks. In fact Charles Mingus thought that Jeff’s version of “Porkpie Hat” was the best.

It must have been an important gig, he's wearing sleeves. This is from his jazz fusion phase (Beck has had more phases than the moon.) I almost forgot he used to play a Les Paul and he used to use a pick. I haven't seen him do either for at least thirty five years. He can do things with the whammy bar on a Strat that I can't even describe. I'll go on record and say he is the best guitarist of all time and I don't care how many Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan fans I piss off. Since you said you had a background with the bass guitar I'll recommend Beck's collaberation with Stanley Clarke--Rock and Roll Jelly.

did you realize thats the Beatles song She's a woman he does some of the lines with a talk box ,in his early material he used vocalist including a young Rod Stewart
at this point of his career in this video, he just was at the beginning of becoming predominantly a instrumental guitarist and musician. he broke through with the yardbirds in the 60s early 70s got into that funk/rock thing with vocals ,then put out Blow by blow (in which she's a woman is on) ,wired then there and back these put him on the map of being from the guitar world one of the most favored and influencing players ever ,and always will be .he's admired for his tastefulness and unique techniques (you should hear him with the whammy bar !) volume control ,tone control, subtleties and as time went on using no pick and only fingers. at the stage of this video you can see both techniques. and has played jam and collaborated with many other musicians especially as of late. in fact the yardbirds had Led Zeps guitarist also playing guitar along side with him. thats a short anthology of a very long and lustrious career . no one is for everyone but this dude is not going to be forgotten for quite some time this is not just another musician. I think you'll relate to his early stuff more .

Mate, everyone goes on and about with Eric Clapton but personally I've always found BECK to be the very definition of a guitarists GUITARIST. His artistic expression is distinctively unique and his technical prowess is second to NONE. When I listen to Beck he is the ONLY guitarist that takes me to a sublime cosmic realm that is truly an out of body experience. And to this day the man is not resting on his well deserved laurels but to the contrary he is ever evolving and better as he continues his journey.
    Thank goodness for Jeff Beck!!

Thanks Mr. Anthems. He gets some crazy sounds out of a fixed bridge, for sure. This vid was from the period before he hit big as a solo artist on radio. I've seen him a couple of times. One was next level up. Here's the story. I had never heard so many weeping teenage guitarists and their dads in my life. Swearing to quit guitar, and awe-inspired at the same time. At the Toronto stop of the BB King Blues Tour, Jeff Beck opened with a performance of microtonal whammy guitar work that tore the roof off conceivable possibilities on guitar. It like was a master showing his students that as good as they were, they knew nothing! Even old BB, confined to a chair, was inspired to play like a young man. He must have thought, "I've got to follow that." The best I've heard him play in the last few decades, and even some excellent inventive lead work. I've seen BB a number of times since the 1970's and he was on fire that night. Even a very special and delightful encore with Jeff.

There is no definitive Jeff Beck tune. Since emerging in 1965 with the Yardbirds (he took over Eric Clapton's slot) with hits including 'Over Under Sideways Down', 'Shapes of Things' and 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago' paving the way for psych, to introducing 'heavy' with 'Beck's Bolero' (rec. May '66 w/Jimmy Page on rhythm, Keith Moon drumming, John Paul Jones of bass...), to the raw rock-blues of 'Truth' his debut album (Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on bass; a template for his for his friend Page's Led Zeppelin) up through the creation of jazz-rock-fusion on the George Martin-produced (Beatles) 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired' to the wildly daring but oh so wonderful 'Guitar Shop', to the often very diverse albums since the late 90s, Beck has forged new paths for player. His 'Appearing This Week at Ronnie Scott's' DVD is a great introduction, though online you can also find a full-length Tokyo 1999 show with Jennifer Batten in the band that presents Jeff in a big venue setting and blistering from start to finish. Killer!
What we don't see in the 'She's a Woman' clip (a Beatles tune played here with UPP, a band he was producing; on 'Blow by Blow', where he had a different band, this tune is done reggae-style) is Jeff's mastery of the Stratocaster. His approach is totally unlike anyone else's, with him using the knobs and whammy bar to 'sing' through his guitar. (Jeff has sung on occasion but his monotone voice is surprisingly dull, lacking any of the musicality of his playing.)
This great clip offers insight into Jeff's Strat style. ruclips.net/video/hdTEmQJEgdQ/видео.html

A good place to jump into Jeffs’ work might be the “Guitar Shop” LP. Start with the song “Big Block” and check out who’s with him on said record. You need to do yourself a solid, and spend a few months (because that’s what it will take) to get through a catalog that’s more than 50 yrs in the making. I’ve only heard one other player that even remotely sounds like Jeff,( but when he does it’s spot on) and that’s Scott Henderson of Tribal Tech fame. Both with unique musical paths and styles. Jeff had enough of vocalists and for the type of music he went on to play there was no room for vocals. His guitar sings so there's no need for another singer. He had an estate and 32 cars so he had enough money and he's world famous and anybody on the planet would jump at the chance to play with him. He won 8 Grammys and was invited into the Rock and Roll hall of fame twice. Fender made a Jeff Model Stratocaster So I think that's a hell of a career and he's not for everybody, it takes an educated ear as he doesn't play pop songs. So for a sick ass heavy rocker where the whole band is on FIYA (Tal the bass player is 21) Here's the track > ruclips.net/video/WwVf4MFB9hg/видео.html face-fuchsia-wide-eyes cheers, mate

Yeah that's a great album. Also check out the live album with Jan Hammer . It is killer. We used to play that version of Freeway Jam and Full Moon Boogie. OMG.
Wired is great right to the hole in the middle.

Wow, virtually nothing on Jeff's actual playing in this video. Comments about his bass player, does he sing, what's his defining song, people will probably suggest that I listen to more. But nothing about Jeff's actual playing. Amazing... Talks a lot and doesn't really say anything. Last time I watch a Chasing Anthems video. If you want to see something about the actual virtuosity of the playing go watch the "Jeff Beck's feel is IMPOSSIBLE to emulate!!! A MASTER of subtlety" RUclips video.

No their not all instrumentals. But… mostly… Jeff doesn’t sing. Another post mentioned Live @ Ronny Scott’s and that is one of the last live shows I know of. He had most of Led Zeppelin in the audience for that show.

Is that the one where Page gets up there and they do an instrumental Kashmir, or something, together?

    Jeff's best stuff is when he's playing a strat, i.e 1976 onwards.

    • @s.mcpherson6354

I love that stuff, but this Gibson stuff was pretty amazing considering how old he was. As for Strats, he plays that famous teal one in the background, as a bar band, in the movie Twins.

I think Jeff's technique on a Strat far exceeds what he does on the Les Paul, but I like his tone on the Les Paul much better. Regardless of what he plays, he's my favorite guitarist.

I can't stand his whammy bar Strat stuff---If I see a video with him holding a Les Paul or Tele I watch it, Strat.... no thanks...

Jeff plays music which would be impossible to to transcribe to notation. Otherworldly talent. He was the best pure guitarist and his legacy will live on forever. Jeff was not a singer.

@@ChasingAnthems Most old rockers think Clapton and Paige are the gods and no others. That leaves Lucifer, that baddest badass of them all. The one who gave us free will. If it wasn't for Lucifer we wouldn't even be here. Adam and Eve would still be putzing around the garden sucking up to the big guy. As you can tell by my irreverence I am not a believer. I hope I didn't offend you. As for me, the best guitarist I ever saw live was Clarence White, and I have seen many of them. Here is a link to my music if interested.
