They have been taught boys/men have no self-control. Nike! What a bizarre teaching. I have to wonder if it is because JB has no self control, hence why there are 19 children. How awful for a woman to have to be pregnant 19+ times. I would have lost my mind.@NatalieScanlon

I’m older than the Duggar kids but young than the parents. I left IBLP in the early 2000’s. I can’t even begin to describe how difficult it is to escape the prison of fear that is your own thoughts when you are in any cult, including this one. Good for Joy.

Grew up in an orthodox Mormon home. Some people argue that Mormonism isn't a cult, but either way my parents and community sure made it one lol. People don't understand that it's not like you suddenly see the light and you're completely free. Because you were taught (when your brain was forming) that doubting or thinking for yourself is such a threat, you have to overcome that before you can even start addressing the beliefs.
Unwinding the conditioned thinking that was programmed into you from birth takes time, focused effort, therapy and support. It's taken me years and I still catch thinking patterns or assumptions or biases that are from childhood. I'm in my 50's. So I do hope everybody is patient and kind with the Duggar adult children, the Brown adult children, and the OG3. :)

    • @UnPluggingThePlayer
      @UnPluggingThePlayer Месяц назад +8

And yet there are reality vloggers that claim a cult, or a TLC show parenting isn't a reason to explain adult kids major problems (like the Brown guys self exit.) These people's lives are different than other mixed up families. They have very different emotional beliefs dynamics to sort out. Like you said, many never escape or know that it's not healthy.
      Good luck to you.

I feel the same... I have no intention of reading Jingers book..it is just trading off one religion for another, BUT in Jills book, she is being true and basically just putting out there what her life was like in the family..from the molestation, to the control, to the theft of money she earned but was not being paid, at the hands of her father and so many other things. I found Jill to be open and honest..and I just hope she continues on with her professional therapy and free's herself even more.. There is so much more she can have in her life to make her whole and happy! I can't imagine a parent stealing from their child, and making them feel bad to be getting what they were entitled to, from the very beginning.. That money should have been in an account for each child from day 1, and collecting interest.. He had the audacity to say she owed for food and a place to live and clothes, etc... That was their choice to have all those kids and good parents would never say you owe this much for us raising you.. What a creep...This made me sick...

Seeing Joy-Anna's reaction to Jinger's book has changed my perspective on that book and, particularly, what she was trying to accomplish with it.
It's easy to write it off, like I did initially, as wishy-washy and not going far enough - but I realise now that I felt that way because I wasn't the target audience. It's important to remember that, like Katie said, having everything you've ever believed questioned can be earth-shattering, so it needs to be done gently and empathetically, at a comfortable pace. As much as many of us want to rush in and free these young people (especially the girls) from this cult, Rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time to get away from belief systems like the IBLP, and Jinger's book probably feels like a welcoming and friendly first step to those who need it. I see that now and applaud Jinger for realising it was needed (as Joy-Anna's reaction proves) and providing it in an accessible way 💕 Writing it in such a way that her parents wouldn't ostracise her for it has probably helped to keep it accessible to those who need it.
    Well played, Jinger 👍💖

I hope Joy Anna & all the IBLP kids do the research & decide what works best for them. That might be another religion, no religion or their own idea of God & what that means to their lives. Congratulations Joy Anna on developing your own beliefs and breaking free from the oppression that women in the IBLP suffer.

Now looking back over everything and I see all the red flags. It makes me so proud to watch the Duggar women come into their own. We all at some point question our upbringing, for some it’s a revelation that can totally change your perspective on things. That personal growth is to be so admired. It was for me and my life is not comparable to the way Joy was raised. All I can say is at 50 I’m still processing so I’m sure this will be a long road for her and Austin and I wish them both a happier and lighter path forward.
I really hope the therapist she’s seeing is one that understands postpartum depression because my experience is many people in general have no idea and belittle it so easily.

Jill's book is powerfully based on TRUTH. The TRUTH can be offensive, but it is the only thing that can set us free from well-crafted lies and deceptions. I too am concerned that Jinger went from one cult and then immediately jumped into yet, another cult under the dangerous teachings of John MacArthur. Jill is far more alert and careful than Jinger is at this point. I hope Joy-Anna will be wise and discerning as she moves forward.

I find it so strange that the parents were so worried about what was going on outside of the house with dating and such, that they neglected to chaperone what was going on inside the house! And it really doesn't help when you have Jim Bob Duggar saying to the entire world that my wife and I are always trying for children... That in itself is psychologically damaging especially if you're one of their kids... Not allowed in the room until after a certain time in the morning... That be because Michelle was absolutely exhausted? That's just wondering I don't know.

Having come out of a fundamentalist Pentecostal background questions were seen as evil but I had so many questions that needed to be answered. The spiritual rollercoaster of my life has been a blessing as I have slowly found the ability to live in uncertainty while also remaining rock solid in my faith in Papa/Jesus/Holy Spirit. At 72 amd like many, my world has been rocked a few times and I'm still here. Everything I've gone through or been put through, is still in my mind and I'm better than just okay.
Joyanna wiil be, as they say, "fine". Though she'll never lose the memories of years and moments that traumatized her, and will always carry scars, I believe she will learn to keep them in their place, in time.
I remember watching the Duggar shows years ago. I remember seeing Joyanna and Austin working together on a house they were renovating and thinking how at ease they were with esch other and happy to spend time together. She was in her Birkenstocks and right in there working with Austin. Then they renovated and lived in a trailer and were still happy. Over time I learned about Austin's background. Though I can't be specific, there was something different, something missing in Austin that screamed "lockstep cult member" in the Duggar boys and Jimbob.
When Katie posted the video about Joyanna seeking medical care, and counselor for post partum depression, knowing her childhood, I still don't believe she would have sought help unless Austin supported her. And, that means he was never a good cult follower even though he was raised in it.
I think Joyanna and Austin are very close and have a good marriage. They will get through the first times, and keeping going. They both have support from Ginger and probably Jeremy. Jill's book was maybe too blunt, at this time, for Joyanna; that doesn't mean she hasn't talked to her, and will never read her book. Joyanna needs to take all the time she wants and I think she will. She may get push back from her parents or some siblings. Even though she's just started, she knows she's gone too far to turn around.
