as a Mom in IBLP who had 8 years of infertility followed by losing our only son to SIDS, after 3 miscarriages, it was drilled into me that infertility was God’s judgement on my husband and I. The babies we lost, we were not to grieve, as Gothard taught those children would reject Christ! It was humiliating to attend conferences with only 4 children….such guilt, shame and judgement from this cult. I still struggle with the lies we were brainwashed to believe. It was rebellious to ask questions or disagree with Gothard!!! I have lost 20 years of life and struggling to forgive myself.

Hey. I'm so sorry all of that was done to you. God is angry over how you were treated in his name. I grew up in an abusive home that followed a lot of these teachings I often feel like I've lost all this time and am still losing time over fighting in my head against these teachings. I always remind myself that God will "restore the years the locust have eaten". I believe your babies are with Jesus.

I recall some of the duggars grieving over miscarriages before. Including Jim Bob and Michelle and they are fully in this. It is a normal response to that kind of loss. I won't speak on God or heaven because I don't know but I do know right from wrong and what they told you was wrong

I was raised in one of these cult-like churches. We were not allowed to marry outside of the church even though I did. We couldn't wear makeup, cut our hair or go to doctors for any reason. It was faith healing only and all babies were delivered by self-appointed midwives from the church. I was terrified to even hear a cuss word. I seriously thought that I would go to hell if I heard someone say a cuss word. When I was a teen, I started realizing how wrong this church was and how they made up their own rules to follow that were not in the bible. When I met my husband, he started pointing out things that were really in the bible and showing me that what I was being taught was so wrong. I pretty much ran away and eloped with my husband at 17 1/2 and never looked back at that crazy church.

I love that she has found her voice. I know that she most likely feels that she needs to correct the information that she put out in the book that she wrote with her sisters.I am sure that she realizes that she had no idea what she was talking about since she had no life experience to draw from when she was giving advice with no real idea of the real world and the problems that people deal with. She mentions in the book that she suffered from social anxiety because she had no idea how to deal with people who were outside of the IBLP. I have to say that I always knew that would happen. When I watched the show I used to wonder how the kids were going to relate to people when they get out in the real world. I wondered how they would be able to interact with people when they have no life experience and no knowledge of pop culture. It will make them look naive and immature when speaking to other adults their age. I think that she has been very easy on her parents in the book and I think that she wants people to think of her parents as victims of Bill Gothard. I understand that she loves them, but there is no denying that those teachings came into her home via her parents, neither of whom grew up in the IBLP. She would not have had the struggles that she had if they had not brought it into the home and taught and enforced those principles. I have to wonder how she really feels about her parents role in all this. There is also the fact that that she and her siblings were not well educated due to the fact that they were taught from the wisdom booklets. I know that they were not taught properly or adequately. I have to admit that I felt sorry for them when i watched the show the kind of struggles that these kids would have when they need to get out in the world and deal with people who did not grow up within their small circle. I look forward to her continuing growth. I am waiting for a time when they can really admit that their parents are just as responsible for the how misguided and and under educated as Bill Gothard, more so because he would not have had access to them without her parents.

I am having trouble imagining how family size could impact one’s reaction to teachings that are good or bad. That doesn’t mean that I am for or against a specific family size and my feeling is that I have enough to concern myself with my own salvation and my children do that I don’t bother to worry about others choices in such a personal situation. Also, I am a Christian. Judging others choices is a strike against me, so to speak, that I will have to answer for. I go out of my way to avoid doing anything that Jesus has warned us not to do. He doesn’t request it, he says DO NOT. But that’s just me and you might have fewer responsibilities and you sin incredibly rarely if ever and so you don’t feel any pressure to do good. I don’t know and it’s none of my business. I would, though, like you to explain to me how being taught things that are not from the Bible and could be so destructive and cause anxiety would be worse if you have more siblings. I would think it would be harder as an only child with no one to talk to about your worries.

1 - I said nothing about teachings that were good or bad
2 - I don’t worry about others either, I have enough on my plate
      3 - I too am a Christian
4 - Why do I have fewer responsibilities and therefore sin less often? How did you derive that from my comment?
5 - You want me to explain how being taught things that are not from the Bible and that could be destructive and cause anxiety are bad? Friend, you’re looking for the wrong person. I’m no preacher and I don’f have any of the answers to any of your biblical questions or rights and wrongs.
6 - Being one of nineteen kids and being an only child are extremely different, don’t put words in my mouth
7 - You’re thinking way too hard and reading way too much into my simple comment. If a young girl looks around, and sees 18 other siblings, and sees her mom working her behind off to take care of them all, then that might be overwhelming for her. Why? Because they don’t believe in birth control so she could very well assume that this could be her situation as a mother in 20 years from now. That could be overwhelming and cause anxiety, which is exactly what my post stated.

I love that she examined what she had been taught! She didn’t say well I don’t want to do this so I’m done. She went through and examined what she had been taught and realized that it wasn’t what the Bible says. Her family should be proud of her for thinking everything through and figuring out what is right for her! Wearing pants isn’t immodest, I know some people feel it is and in that case those people should do what is comfortable for them but to teach others that it is immodest isn’t really fair.

As someone in eating disorder recovery for 10 + years, her statement, "I try to eat healthy and feed my family healthy foods and workout" is still indicative that she still attaches morality to food and views it as "healthy" unhealthy" "good foods" "bad foods" --which is still a disordered cognition surrounding food. It's incredibly ingrained and normalized thanks to diet-culture, but it's still disordered nonetheless. It's great that she has done work with self-identity and not focusing so much on physical appearance! That is a MASSIVE milestone in ED recovery. However, even her sentiment on saying her mother had an ED too, but it was "worse" is minimizing her own very valid and real ED struggles and shows that she must associate a mental illness with needing to look a certain way, which is a massive stigma that keeps people stuck and sick. In fact, MOST ED sufferers will not appear underwight, statistically speaking only 6% of the entire ED population will appear underweight. Most people are not underweight, and EDS still have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. I hope she continues to heal from the religious trauma and ED. I know for me the main mechanism behind my own ED was certainly trauma. When trauma isn't addressed, the disorder will persist as it's a coping mechanism. Either that, or it morphs into other coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma. She deserves to heal. I wish her the best

It's the same patriarchal dognma- men are the "headship", women are to stay home and raise kids. I've listened to some of Jeremy's preaching and a lot of it made me cringe. John Macarthur excommunicated a woman and her children from his "church" after she wanted to end the marriage after the husband's long violent history - the husband is now serving 20 years for domestic violence and child abuse. Macarthur also fired many long-term female employees and has a policy of putting his name as an author for books published from Master's Seminary.
