    According to -the wiki- reddit.
    On mixed damage weapons. each damage type is multiplied by the respective resistance/weakness of the target and the color of the damage dealt is tied to the highest base damage of the weapon.
    for exemple : the purcupine has blunt and pierce.
    troll are resistant to blunt and weak to pierce.
    so the blunt damage of the porcupine is reduced when hitting troll and the pierce damage is increased.
    BUT the BASE blunt damage of the porcupine is higher than the BASE pierce damage of the porcupine. therefor the damage show as grey.
    BUT if you upgrade the porcupine it only increase pierce damage so the pierce damage can be higher than the blunt damage.
    so if you hit a troll with an upgraded porcupine the damage shown will appear as yellow because the BASE pierce damage is higher than the BASE blunt damage.
    Edit : just remembered that i didnt saw that info on the wiki but on a reddit post : just search for "exp deep dive" on the valheim reddit.
    the post is fairly long. but it indicates this resistance color thing on the
    "combat and skills application"
    "resistance"

    Awesome guide. I found there are additional rules to the yellow number, for example: the pickaxe does pierce damage however if you use it on a stone golem, the number shows up yellow. Stone golems are resistant to pierce, indicated by the grey number you see when shot by arrows or stabbed by spears, but it seems the pickaxe is an exception. It’s unlikely to be caused by mixed dmg type overriding because the pickaxe only does pierce dmg.

    So far this is my understanding:
    Gray = Weak
    White = Regular
    Yellow = Strong
    Type of damage = Pierce / Blunt / Slash
    Elemental damage
    Stagger = Double Damage, applies to any color.
    Surprise attack = Increased Damage (no idea how much)
    Back Surprised attack = Increased Damage (no idea how much)
    You may attack non alert targets from front and back
    You are suppose to do more damage from the back with weapons such as knives.
    You deal same dmg if the surprise range/melee attack comes from front or back
    Totally agree on diferent dmgs pop ups, otherwise its hard to tell - Suscribed!

    • @ForeverLaxx
      @ForeverLaxx 3 года назад +2

      The "surprise attack/back surprised attack" are the same. Facing has no relevance in this game with regards to damage as long as the conditions are met. You're pretty much guaranteed to alert something if you try hitting them from the front, though. There's also no "increased damage from behind" in general. Again, facing is irrelevant. They should probably change the description to Sneak Attack rather than Backstab to clear up this confusion.

  • @Arkalius80
    @Arkalius80 3 года назад +7

    Your description of the parry bonus I believe is incorrect. The parry bonus is the multiplier to the block amount when you successfully parry. So, if the thing can normally block 20 damage and has a 2x parry bonus, a parry can block 2x20=40 damage. I'm pretty sure damage done to a staggered opponent is always double. It wouldn't make sense for shields (which cannot do damage) to have a parry bonus if it was as you say in the video.
    Also, about backstabbing... I don't believe having been damage is what prevents backstab damage. From what I've seen in another guide, there's a 5 minute cooldown on backstab damage. That is, once backstabbed, a creature cannot be backstabbed again for 5 minutes. Worth testing.

    • @quicksandriggs
      @quicksandriggs 3 года назад +1

      I've come to the same conclusion on parry bonus. Any damage bonus while the enemy is staggered could be classified as a critical hit. And it'd be hard to definitively prove parry bonus applies to that damage since your damage varies within a certain parameter.

    Just want some clarification on the parry bonus on shields and weapons. My research showed that the parry bonus is strictly for improved blocking efficiency, not damage improvement. You only receive damage increases from a staggered enemy or a surprised/backstabbed enemy.

    That's a great suggestion. If they didn't include that because it might get spammy, they could just implement and make it a setting "enable detailed damage text" or put in a full combat log option. The functionality is already there.
    There's also already a rudimentary combat logging in the upper right corner text display, but it only shows very little info,but the functionality is already there. They could just implement a "enable full combat log". This would give players a lot better option as to how they received the info and let them customize how spammy or not the floating text is.

    I think when an item has 2 different types of damage it doesn't mean you deal both simultaneously, rather, different types of attacks deal different damage. for example, I believe the sword does both slash and pierce damage. it you swing normally with left click its all slash damage, however if you use you special attack (mouse button 4 for me, I re-bound it so I don't know what default is) it is a drastically different attack taking much longer to hit and doing a much more "stab like" attack which may be dealing pierce damage. this may also be true for that spiked mace you used at 13:30. (I have not truly conducted any tests to this affect and until seeing this video was, like may, blissfully unaware of how damage actually worked. just a theory.)

  • @ForeverLaxx
    @ForeverLaxx 3 года назад +2

    Fairly positive the displayed damage value is based on whatever the highest damage is for a split damage weapon. I think you can test this fairly easily with Porcupine as the Pierce damage goes above the Blunt damage when upgraded, which should change its display to yellow when used on a troll after the first upgrade.

    I wouldn't call the combined damage being grey 'a bug'....It is the main damage of the weapon that determines the color of the number. With frostner the main damage is frost....not blunt. Same goes for the troll and the porcupine....it's main damage is blunt...not pierce. This would also apply to the greydwarves and fire....an arrows main damage is pierce.
    I'm betting if you used those same items on mobs that were vulnerable to the 'main' damage type they would be yellow...but anything vulnerable to the secondary damage would just show as grey.

    I feel like when two types counter each other out I.E with the Porcupine on a Troll, the game may be like Gen 1 Pokémon where it'll say the effectiveness of only one type. It does Blunt and Pierce so the game probably calculates both and adds them together.
    Your average Blunt and Pierce damage with the Porcupine is 46 Blunt and 41.5 Pierce, therefore; -50% damage total + 150% damage total =100% =87.5 damage)
    Comparatively, if the game did both calculations separately and added them together, your average Blunt damage of 46 halved to 23 then followed by your average Pierce 41.5 damage doubled to 83 damage or so would =106, but still uses the first type of damage used to display the effectiveness. Judging by the numbers shown in the video, the first calculation is what the game uses.
    An explanation for the wrong color shown here could be the same for why there is wrong messages in Pokémon in Generation I, Pokémon with two types that have a weakness and resistance to the same type receive neutral damage from that type, but the incorrect message is displayed.
    For example, Grass-type moves do neutral damage to Gyarados, but if Gyarados is hit by a Grass-type move, the game erroneously states that the attack is not very effective.
    The 'Not very effective' text caption is triggered by a glitch with the way info messages are chosen and prioritized, which does not respect dual-typing. So for our Grass move v Water/Flying example:
    Grass v Water is checked 4th -> message is set to 'Super Effective'
    Grass v Flying is checked 27th -> message is set to 'Not Very Effective'
    Consequently, in this example, the game chooses the message for scenario #27, returning the wrong message "It's not very effective...".

    • @kosolll
      @kosolll 3 года назад

      You have Mistake in your calculation there. In your second example you Are doubling the damage instead of 50% increase. So 150% of 41.5 is 62.2 plus 23 equals 85.2. So Its very similar to 87.5 from your first example And you can't really tell which calculation the game uses.

Because it has a fire stat. i accidently hit a greyling one day out of a panic swing and noticed it did yellow numbers. so I think in order to do increased damage to the greyling other than fire arrows would be a melee weapon that has a Fire Damage stat like the torch. Though i do agree the fire damage dot from the arrow should show up yellow since it does actually do he increased damage.

    The logic behind the elemental damage. You dont want the numbers to be yellow so it does co fuse the player attacking a skeleton with a spear and seeing yellow number and thinking they have its weakness. Easier for them to keep track of.

      @@Firespark81 - it's not just a damage increase. There's different types of attacks.
      The dagger jump from stealth is hugely fun and hard hitting. The mace has a knockback, the sword has a straight damage boost at the expense of a long wind up time. The 2 hand axe (which has a very slow normal attack) has a very fast jab attack with pushback and a low hit target (you can melee leaches).
      I mentioned the low hit target on the last one because one annoying thing in valheim is that you can't really aim your attacks even though the game doesn't do lock on auto target targeting (ie, X mob is targeted, so my hit will impact X mob).
      I think these types of attacks would be good in your next damage /attack /weapon guide, if for no other reason than some players may not realize that there is a special attack and there's different types of attacks.

    Fuling stats (no star version):
    Health 0★
    175
    Damage 0★
    85 Blunt 85 Pierce 85 Slash
    45 Blunt, 45 Fire
    I don't get the damage stats. Does each fuling do 85+85+85 damage (Blunt/Pierce/Slash) but then you have a 45 Blunt/45 Fire which I'm not sure about or has the Wiki just listed all the damages for all types of Fulings? Are there any Fulings that can inflict multiple damage types? Im confused, sorry and thanks

      I know this is late but I will answer.
      Fulings can have different weapons, a club, spear, sword, or torch. The different damage types are for those weapons. If a Fuling spawns with a spear, it does 85 Pierce damage. If a torch, it does 45 blunt + 45 fire.

      It's because the weapon does more blunt damage than pierce. The descriptions of the damage types override each other and confuse the games AI, displaying grey numbers. Realistically if you're hitting trolls or skeletons with porcupine I'd say the numbers should be white to account for both resistant and weakness damage. You're still getting that bonus damage from the weakness on both trolls and skelies but on trolls it won't show due to the weapon being more "Blunt" than "pierce"
