I will keep my night light burning. I was never able to see them live, because I am 17 and never got the chance because they often play on 18+ places here in sweden.
But I am happy he doesn't have his pain anymore and probably is at a better place.
I will keep listen to Magnum til I die.

1979 was the first of the 123 times I have seen Magnum live, and my first introduction to the band. They (and particularly Tony) have given me nearly 45 years of wonderful musical experiences.
Along with all the other praise and tributes he will be deservedly receiving, Tony was also a genuine, down to earth chap who was always happy to chat to fans, sign merch, and even reminisce over a beer about their early days (Bob coming in for a fair bit of good natured ribbing most times).
Goodbye my friend, your presence will be felt on this Earth for many lifetimes.

A very fitting and heartfelt tribute Phil.... this is such a dark day for music. Tony Clarkin is surely one of the best songwriters this country has ever produced. It was a privilege to present the band's 50th Anniversary chart on my UK radio show back in 2022. A truly unique and brilliant band.... one I've always considered The UK's finest.....

‘Chase The Dragon’ was the first CD I ever bought and I thank Tommy Vance for getting me into Magnum via The Friday Rock Show. Very sad news indeed - I only saw Magnum live once at Exeter Corn Exchange on the “Brand New Morning” tour and it was an amazing gig - to hear “Wild Swan” I will never forget. Nice tribute Phil - I will play my “Vigilante” vinyl 🎸🇬🇧

Tony was always a tasteful and restrained guitarist, always playing in service to the song. But I once saw him really open up playing his solo in Just Like An Arrow back in the early 80s at the Hammersmith Odeon, and it was a revelation. Never forgot the importance of melody, never tried to impress anyone with flashy fingers, but he smoked that solo - you could feel the room just collectively catch their breath in the presence of greatness.

I was only talking, over a few beers, with my mate on Saturday night who the first rock musician we would lose in 2024 and then I hear this. Always loved the artwork on early Magnum albums… from Chase the Dragon thru to Mirador. Also remember getting the Wings of Heaven LP autographed by the band in HMV Birmingham New Street back in 88. An underrated band but a good one. RIP TC.

Magnum played in my home town back in the 90s. As this was the era of grunge, alternate rock and crossover bands like Primus, our local newspaper didn't hesitate in describing them as past it, or the cliche "rock dinosaurs".
Magnum were a band I got into quite young, so I was happy to go see them (and seeing as I was too young to get into many venues, and we didn't get many decent bands playing here, I would have gone even if I'd never heard them).
Firstly, they were fucking amazing. To this day, I still say they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen. The musicianship was spot on, and Bob knows how to perform, not just sing.
Secondly, for all the piss-taking in the local press about how they were no longer relevant, the hall was packed, and the audience were going nuts. Rumour has it that there were about 300 people more than was legally allowed in, from staff sneaking friends and family in because it was sold out.

First and foremost RIP Tony and my best wishes to his family and loved ones.
Magnum have been such a huge part of my life for so many years.
Magnum are one of those bands that despite their long career were still writing, recording and releasing albums without fail every couple of years and these albums weren’t just quickly cobbled together rubbish, they were all brilliant. The only other band I can think of still having that same consistent quality is Saxon.
This is one of those occasions where it’s not just a member of a band passing away that could be easily replaced.
If Bob Catley is the life blood of Magnum, then Tony Clarkin was Magnum’s heart and soul. He wrote all the songs and that signature Magnum sound that we know and love stem from him.
I can’t see how they can carry on as they will never sound the same again. Personally, I don’t think Bob would want to carry on without his mate beside him and that is the fitting epitaph for Tony. He can’t be replaced because he is truly irreplaceable. So sad. 💔

I first discovered Magnum way back in 1982 after hearing their Chase the Dragon album and my love for the band and their music just grew after the release of cracking album after cracking album.
They were a band that never failed to deliver either on record or in their live performances, as you said Phil, Tony was never one for epic guitar solos, but as part of a group he wrote and performed some fantastic music and I personally cannot think of one bad track on any album.
Finally I am looking forward to the release of Here comes the rain, as it will be a celebration of a fantastic hardworking songwriter and guitarist who has given us so much joy over the years.

Phil - I am shocked that Tony Clarkin has passed away. I first heard about it on SoT and Pete and Steven Reid gave me the bad news. With so many passing away that I admire, it is hard to shed tears, but I did with Tony Clarkin. I only found about Magnum last year and I have close to 50 cd albums. Why they never got popular in the U.S. of A. is beyond my understanding. What a discography Tony has left us with.
I think the new album should be released. I would like to see a box set like what John Wetton did as a tribute to him.
My condolences to Tony's family, Band members, and the many fans around the world. RIP Tony Clarkin - You're already missed.

For me, when I first started going to gigs around 1978, Magnum were always "everyone else's support band" and they "latched onto" the NWOBHM scene without really being central to it - but that all changed for me when "On A Storyteller's Night" came out and my mates and I realised that they broken through as a great band in their own right, and deservedly so. At that point, I went back and listened to their earlier stuff and realised then how good their songs actually were and we perhaps shouldn't have spent so much time in the bar at venues when they were supporting.
I have been a fan ever since, I think the last time I did see them was in 2010 at the High Voltage Festival in London.
    RIP Tony Clarkin.

I first knew of Magnum when they put out their Chase the Dragon album. I asked my friend about them and he (manager of the record store Camelot) told me they were great and he thought I would love them. I did love them and went on to buy everything they put out, and I was never disappointed. Tony was able to put out music in a varied of styles, he is (was) one of the best at that. Sorry, i still don't want to think he's gone. He was a master of being able to write a song and perfectly fit it into where he thought it should go. Whether it was pop, rock, folk even, he had a plan for each song that made it special. I'm still reeling from the news.

Great tribute to a largely unsung musician Phil. Magnum has a solid back catalogue, but their first half dozen albums are essential listening. I first saw them almost by accident as they supported Marillion at the garden party in 86, during either the the Story Teller's Night or Vigilante tour. Absolutely brilliant band. TC wasn't a flashy guitarist, but very tasteful and solos augmented a song rather than showed off and diminished it. A real loss to hard rock music.
