This is one of my favourite end scenes and I must have watched it hundreds of times. The way they leave the camera on Vera walking away and rolling the credits (very rare). And just before Lynne sings the theme there's the love theme (as I call it) on another outing - of all the incidental music this is the one I love most and it brings tears to the eyes every time with those soft strings. Tremendous in episode 534 when Myra turns to the camera in real flowing tears after saying farewell to Jeff. And then in the same episode it's played again in the farewell to Jude. It wasn't used again however for a long time and (I think) only appeared again when Alice 'lurch' was in the governor's office with her beloved Harry (ep 691 or 692).
It's too bad Vera did leave under these circumstances...although a tough screw, she was fair, unlike Ferguson. And at least Vera showed humility and compassion once in a while. You were missed when you left Fiona!
This is the most somber ending in the entire series.... It is reminiscent of the Australia of the past. Modern Australia had a dark beginning and today it is undergoing a dark ending. From Slave prisoners convicts indentured servants to the Chinese Coolies. The Coolies who were once subjugated now have descendants through immigration and Drugs who are taking over the country..
Can’t blame Vera for not attending her own farewell party, the others were kinda two faced about her. For all her (many) faults, she was as straight as they came, and positively angelic compared to the Freak.
The echoing voice as Vera remembers past things was used on 'Crossroads' sometimes (a UK soap that was as popular as 'Prisoner Cell Block H'), the echoing voice was used when 'Crossroads' Meg Richardson (played by actress Noele Gordon) explained what she did before she left the motel she owned for good, (luckily and unknown to Meg her beloved motel was the target of arson, thankfully she left the motel before the arson attack, to start a new life in Manhatten, after going on a long cruise first.
+DaveyC95 Yes, Joan went on for far too long, and she should have gone in the 500's era maybe, when there was that chance due to her being framed by the women of assault. Or maybe earlier, who knows? John McRae was bad, stupid and crazy to write out Vera and Jim. Vera and Jim had a hell of a lot of mileage in them, and they should have stayed for as long as Fiona and Gerard wanted to stay for. If they had wanted to stay until the end of the series, I would have welcomed that. 😃
Derek Horne From what I heard from other people who met Gerard at events, he told them that he was sacked from the show. 😲 And now on Channel 10's 40th anniversary of Prisoner video with Amanda Muggleton and Val Lehman, Val says she was gotten rid of because of a new producer who didn't like her, and not because she thought Bea had gone as far as she could go. 😲
So many characters felt there goodbye moment to the series was disrespectful towards that character.. Bea 😢 hated how her character ended But vera glad she got a satisfying ending The freak was kinda the replacement vera Always preferred vera
@DaveyC95 McRae destroyed the series when he wrote Fiona Spence out of the Show! Gerard Maguire and Jim Fletcher were interesting Characters also. I could not understand McRae reasoning!

Left with dignity! I love Vera Bennett.

You may have a point, but as far as I know Fiona resigned and wanted to leave. Gerard may be a different story though.

MsPerogi Gerard Macgire is Jim Fletcher 😂
They wanted to leave. What’s the issue?
she never was, she is mentointed time to time but never actualy on screen
There weren't many soap actors in oz then hence the recycling I guess across the oz soaps?
8000 hits wtf!
I liked Fiona Spence as Alf ‚s sister Celia in home and away - complete opposite to Miss Bennett
