I believe Layne had trouble dealing with a religious upbringing and the realities of living life. He makes references to only wanting to play and get on your knees time to pray. He also says it's the weight of my heart not the size making a reference to a person's heart being weighed against a feather to determine their afterlife. There is no greater despair than to have been made to believe you are irredeemable. It doesn't remove your belief it removes your hope. He is looking at his reflection and is destroyed by what he sees but a sinking ship cannot right itself.

A timeless, unique classic. AIC wasn't exactly mainstream, yet many of their biggest songs were commercial enough to have crossover appeal. "Man In The Box", "Them Bones", "Would", "No Excuses", and so on. But not this song. This song is for the misfits. The outsiders. The music nerds. The ones most people didn't understand. "Angry Chair" is a masterpiece.

@@nacho9006 I listen to all music at this point. I grew up an edgy kid who just liked underground rap and I feel really ignorant for that. I missed out on so much good music to listen to violent gangsta rap. Holy cringe.
You are correct. People always consider Dirt their best album, but their self titled is my favorite (the "dog album"). It starts out with 3 absolute bangers (Grind, Brush Away, and Sludge Factory which is one of my favorites) and finishes with Over Now which is amazing. and their MTV Unplugged is the best Unplugged session of all time. I listen to Alice every single day. This band straight up saved my life. Interesting tidbit about the Unplugged session: about 30 mins before the show, Layne was super dope sick. He got stuff, shot up, and went out and put on one of the most iconic performances in the history of rock music. Dude was an absolute beast, despite being soooo fucked up on junk.

We do. We caught one of the last truly great waves of rock music. I distinctly remember MTV switching from Warrant power ballad videos to Alice In Chains and Soundgarden.
Alice In Chains is just that type of band I just keep coming back to all the time. I listen to facelift and dirt all the time and they’re both masterpieces in their own right. Especially Dirt, not one song is bad at all. I might even like some of the more unknown songs better like Hate to Feel and Godsmack. Honestly, one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard in my life, easily in my top 5 of all time.
Yeah man, Dirt is great, some of my 5 favorite albums: "Core" Stone Temple Pilots "Nevermind" Nirvana "Lateralus" Tool "Master of Reality" Black Sabbath "Dirt" Alice In Chains
This song is so extreme in every way. The riffs, the lyrics, the stop and start rhythms, the darkness, the contrast of the darkness with the pseudo-light nihilist surrender of the chorus. It takes so much creativity and serious balls to write something like that and perform it with so much confidence, to say "I'm going to do something so weird and different but it will kick ass". Wish he was still here with us.
I think the chorus is so "light" because it's about real relief coming from acceptance of his state, albeit the "I-I-I" reminds you that it doesn't mean he's free from it, it's kinda like relief of acceptance that you will die soon of some disease - you still have to die. Quite remarkable how something so simple/easy to play can be so original, complex, nuanced and good. I can't get enough, something beautiful about, something that inspires me instead of depressing. It's raw, real, not overly poetic (to the point you can't really relate). My favourite grunge song probably.
This video is kinda sad to me seeing Layne strong yet fragile. He was confronting his fear of snakes as it slithers under him and his body stiffens. He could've said no but went with it. This man sure gave it his all. Rest In Peace Layne. 🌹

I actually just found out that Jerry gets the songwriting credit for the music, but most of the lyrics were written by Layne. Then there are songs like this where Payne wrote all of it and Rooster and Down in a Whole whereJerry wrore everything including the lyrics. Layne didn't direct this video. Matt Mahurin directed, photographed and edited this. I should know. I was there & worked on it. All of the animals were real. Layne was very nice to me...a gentle, quiet guy who just did the work. We shot this in New York City in a studio in one (very long) day. Hard to believe how much time has passed...RIP Layne.
Ben detto! È proprio vero che tutti (o quasi) hanno scoperto e apprezzato il grunge grazie ai Nirvana, Pearl Jam ecc ecc, ma poi tutti si sono innamorati maggiormente di loro!
I couldn't even tell you what song it was, for me. My mom was a fan when I was single-digits. Seemed like they were always there. They, along with Faith No More, were my first favorite bands.
i have been a classically trained harpist and pianist from the age of four years old. I wasn't into this kind of music or anything, however being just enchanted by the music of Alice In Chains as well as the Smashing Pumpkins, I told my parents in 1992 that I just had to go see them as my first concert when they came through my town. I was in second grade, ten years old, and my parents made me go with a babysitter, but he was like 16 or 17 and loved the bands so he didn't mind. I kept asking him, "why are so many people lighting rubber bands or something on fire!?" I learned a year or two later what i was actually smelling. Anyway, people my age were totally oblivious to being able to relate to my experience so it all just stayed bottled up just how incredible it was to see them. They all would just ask why I liked such hard and angry music. To me, and I absolutely stand by it to this day, I feel that music itself peaked for a whopping 350 years, give or take. From the 1600s to the 1999s, I feel that music composition was at its peak. People don't understand the very pronounced differences between baroque music and classical music, classical music and romantic music, romantic and contemporary...most people would simply call that entire span of compositions classical, even though it is far from. So this majority of people would think me insane to hear that I consider those periods greatly differing from one to another while at the same time, I feel that modern music, yes even Alice in Chains and Pumpkins, is very similar to the other periods of music. These people are simply the master composers of our time. Do I believe that Layne and Jerry are up to the level of Beethoven or Chopin!? You bet your ass I do. In fact, their ability to tweak and arrange chords, melodies, harmonies, and the like to achieve mood altering sounds is unbelievable. It is quite advanced too, something which I dunno...must come naturally because even after being trained for several years in composition, I couldn't write a single decent line of music to save my life. So yea, these are the Mozarts of our time and I stand by that. Is all music such? Heavens no...but you can definitely pull out the masters if you know what you're looking for. Tell you what though, I would have never thought in that moment in second grade I was listening to some of the greatest composers of all time. But I see what drew me to it now. I ended up seeing AIC once more with Layne and three times with the new guy and I saw pumpkins another fifteen or twenty times. Just under four hundred concerts in my lifetime. I've seen all the greats though. I only wish I could have had a cell phone back in those days. Not outside of the concerts, heck no...phones and the Internet have simply destroyed society, civilization, common courtesy, privacy, etc. But holy cow, to have been able to take those memories and shows with me...and today, just about all of the greats are dead. We still got Ms. Stephanie Nicks, Mrs. Dolly Parton, and a few other major irreplaceable people who gave so much to music. But mark my words, it is over and we won't be seeing anything like the greats ever again. After 2000 music became a money making fad creating joke. Musical theory is a total mystery to those making "music" now and given how the Internet works, I don't see music surviving beyond another ten years. It will only be noise and vulgarity to please a low functioning crowd of simpletons.
@@BurnerAddress95 wow man, that was certainly a very perceptive and moving account, we are about the same age and what you wrote spoke to me. Very grand take on that special moments in music which I agree, will go possibly extinct.

For me, it brings flashbacks from childhood and the Catholic church, and I only wish I could have been strung out on drugs back then. My life would have turned out much better..You can leave the Catholic church, but it never leaves you, and that is a fact!
@@IoiniEverson I remember being christened as a baby at the Catholic church and they sprinkled holy water on me--I was raised Catholic and abuse was an every day cycle. I know this song is about heroin addiction. But I have never come across a song or lyrics that describe better my feelings of being stucked for years in emotionally, mentally and physically abusive relationship. I was angry all the time. I started to notice changes in myself that I did not like at all. Like I was being molded to someone else and I didnt recognize who I was anymore. You start to feel all the joy leaving your life. You have to always be on alert and watch your step around the other. Pink clouds turn to gray. And after you finally manage to break free from it. The pain doesnt magically just end there. It all stays with you. "Lonelines is not a phase Fields of pain is where I gaze Serenity is far away" Saw my reflection and cried - you can bet this happens when you dont even know who you are anymore So little hope that I died - a small part of me died during all of it Feed me your lies, open wide - when your parter tries to tell you that it all is normal in a relationship And after it all, you try to tell yourself you dont mind. That you're fine. You're okay. But deep down you know you're lying to yourself. I lost my mind. That utter feeling of being broken in so many ways you cant even properly describe. Only now, years later with a lot of therapy and selfwork I've started to properly recover. Only now I've finally been able to start letting it all go. Before it I let the pain consume me and I past it on to others who did not deserve it. A lot of mistakes I regret and wish I would had never made. But that's something I have to live with. I'm so happy this song exists. It has given me a lot of comfort and sense of security during my journey to heal.

"Man In The Box", "Them Bones", "Would", "No Excuses", and so on. But not this song. This song is for the misfits. The outsiders. The music nerds. The ones most people didn't understand. "Angry Chair" is a masterpiece.

That he wrote the music AND lyrics to himself. He wrote just over half AiCs songs lyrics.
@@Principessa180 layne wrote virtually all of the lyrics to Alice songs, it was the music that jerry was largely responsible for
This song is so extreme in every way.
@kilerf8053 yeah compositionally it's almost as simple as it gets, but so were most Nirvana songs too. The simplicity is part of the genius of it.

Sitting on an angry chair
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don't care
What do I see across the way, hey
See myself molded in clay, oh
Stares at me, yeah I'm afraid, hey
Changing the shape of his face, aw yeah

Candles red I have a pair
Shadows dancing everywhere
Burning on the angry chair
Little boy made a mistake, hey
Pink cloud has now turned to gray, oh
All that I want is to play, hey
Get on your knees, time to pray, oh
[Chorus]
I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
Lost my mind, yeah, but I don't mind, I-I-I
Can't find it anywhere, I don't mind
[Verse 3]
Corporate prison, we stay, hey
I'm a dull boy, work all day, oh
So I'm strung out anyway, hey
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 4]
Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
Serenity is far away
Saw my reflection and cried, hey
So little hope that I died, oh
Feed me your lies, open wide, hey
Weight of my heart, not the size, oh

I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
Lost my mind, yeah, but I don't mind, I-I-I

Layne's voice was of an entire generation, what a special moment to have lived it. Beautiful song
i have been a classically trained harpist and pianist from the age of four years old.

I love this music and the video 🤘
I know this song is about heroin addiction. But I have never come across a song or lyrics that describe better my feelings of being stucked for years in emotionally, mentally and physically abusive relationship.
I was angry all the time. I started to notice changes in myself that I did not like at all. Like I was being molded to someone else and I didnt recognize who I was anymore.
You start to feel all the joy leaving your life. You have to always be on alert and watch your step around the other. Pink clouds turn to gray.
And after you finally manage to break free from it. The pain doesnt magically just end there. It all stays with you.
"Lonelines is not a phase
Fields of pain is where I gaze
Serenity is far away"
Saw my reflection and cried - you can bet this happens when you dont even know who you are anymore
So little hope that I died - a small part of me died during all of it
Feed me your lies, open wide - when your parter tries to tell you that it all is normal in a relationship
And after it all, you try to tell yourself you dont mind.
