      "Political correctness is the oppression of our intellectual movement so no one says anything anymore just in case anyone else gets offended. What happens if you say that and someone gets offended? Well they can be offended; can’t they? What’s wrong with being offended? When did stick and stones may break my bones stop being relevant? Isn’t that what you teach children? He called me an idiot! Don’t worry about it, he’s a dick.
      Now you have adults going “I was offended; I was offended and I have rights!” Well so what, be offended, nothing happened. You’re an adult, grow up, and deal with it. I was offended! Well, I don’t care! Nothing happens when you’re offended. “I went to the comedy show and the comedian said something about the Lord, and I was offended, and when I woke up in the morning, I had leprosy."
      Nothing Happens. “I want to live in a democracy but I never want to be offended again.” Well you’re an idiot.
      How do you make a law about offending people? How do you make it an offense to offend people? Being offended is subjective. It has everything to do with you as an individual or a collective, or a group or a society or a community. Your moral conditioning, your religious beliefs. What offends me may not offend you. And you want to make laws about this? I’m offended when I see boy bands for God sake.
      It’s a valid offense, I’m offended. They’re corporate shills, posing as musicians to further a modeling career and frankly I’m disgusted."

    As an ENFP, I’d describe Fi like this: when you fly on an airplane, the flight attendant instructs you to “put your oxygen mask on first,” before helping others. Why? Because if you run out of oxygen yourself, you can't help anyone else with their oxygen mask. It’s the same with Fi: if I don’t prioritise my well-being first, I won’t be able to help others.

    As far as Fe being less selfish than Fi. I don't think that's true. As lead Fe, I mainly care about the FEELING of lack of harmony. When I'm in a situation where I see someone upset, hurt, etc., I see and feel it all around me and it's soooo uncomfortable. I'll do and say anything to avoid this feeling. I would argue that my actions could be coming from a "selfish" place of not wanting to be uncomfortable.

      @jenniferhanses7064 2 года назад +148

      I would disagree with the "I care about myself more" comment, actually. I will sacrifice my own well being for others. I just wouldn't do it over stupid corn flakes because Sally works at a competing Sanitarium? Dude, I'm not even sure Kellogg's is still in the sanitarium game to BE competition. That they were competition 150 years ago is really not registering in my books as a valid reason to not eat cornflakes.
      Meanwhile, something like Chik-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby donating to anti LGBT causes to the point that they've affected the government of some nations in Africa, and gotten laws passed to stone LGBT people to death, that one registers as even though I'm LGBT, I have a problem with my money ending up supporting that cause because innocent people could directly die due to it. My liking for quick chicken or craft supplies does not balance on the scales versus something like that.
      Though, back to the skit, I think if an Fe user ever tried something like taking my food away from me, I'd have to ask why she was trying to make me sad and give me eating issues and doesn't she care about me? Just a sort of taste of their own medicine.

We are all opinionate and can at times create conflict but, in the end, we understand that it is just our own opinions and work through it. It is entertaining watching Fe people come into the situation of Fi people and trying to smooth things over and at some point, they even become visibly uncomfortable.

      Glad if you live with mature Fi users who can simply move on with their own opinion but it's just not always the case for every Fi sadly. I'm sure any Fe knows fare too well those situations where everyone is confident everything will be ok in the end until it isn't and someone can't. In those situations it's always up to the Fe to fix relationships of others by initiating contact and make an agreement occur which is honestly exhausting and could be avoided pretty easily by preventing unecessary conflicts. It makes Fe users very uncomfortable for sure to watch two Fi users arguing and hope it will not end badly with broked long term relationships because of very selfish reasons. But watching the Fe having to do so much effort so things can go well was definitely very funny, a thing Fi users probably will never actually understand either though.

But as a Ti user, I'd also ask why they're her enemy when its just a job and none of it matters in the long run. Unless they'll be taking her job from her soon, but corporations are just corporations.

      My ISFJ mother would do much the same as you... unless she really wanted Corn Flakes, in which case she'd make a point of mentioning how she went and catered specifically to Sally's preferences, martyring herself and guilting Sally into relenting. She'd be just subtle enough that most people wouldn't even notice it. It might take time, but eventually, she'd wear Sally down and get her way. Mom almost always wins in the end.

We also both hate feeling controlled, so we naturally avoid bringing people into our lives who try to restrict us too much. We sure wouldn't impose our values on others that way! Usually I think dear kristin is right about function usage, but I think this example is too simple as to make others confuse functions Fi and Ti, for example. As a female INTJ who has worked on her emotions for quite a few years now married to an ENFJ, I see the Fi / Fe distinction a lot. The difference is NOT whether Fi or Fe cares or even prioritizes the needs of others (either an Fi user or a Fe user could just buy the silly corn flakes because MBTI is NOT behavior) but the DIRECTION of caring. Empathy in an Fi user would mean visualizing what I would feel like if I lived the life of Sally and adjusting accordingly. If the corn flakes company, say, murdered Sally's family and used the law to get away with it or they excluded her and others because she was / they were autistic or something equally horrifying) then I, based on my own internal values, would staunchly never eat Corn Flakes again, almost irrespective of Sally's presence, because the direction of the emotion comes from me - not from another person. Fe, meanwhile would see that keeping the relationship involved not eating Corn Flakes and might not eat them / or not without even necessarily knowing or valuing the reason but by valuing that person / relationship with that person more. But if an Fe user really wanted to do something (and didn't / couldn't fully understand my reasoning for doing something), they might focus on changing MY RELATIONSHIP with Corn Flakes, so they could eat them, or keep a secret box of Corn Flakes in their room / only eat them at work, so I / Sally didn't see the food and couldn't be bothered.
    For this reason ENFJ and I will often come to the same conclusion about behavior but from very different directions initially.

      @@askarufus7939 Interesting that you mention this, because when I was first trying to confirm my type by learning about the cognitive functions, I was absolutely certain I was Fe rather than Fi, because at first glance by the definition, I resonated much more with the values of harmony and peace-loving typically associated with Fe. My INFJ husband helped me understand, through some anecdotal examples, that I actually am an Fi user when it all comes down to it. And I know this now to be true. But at the time, I wasn't satisfied, so I dug deeper and found an article that described how an ISFP can fuse together their Fi + Se to synthesize a pseudo-Fe.... That made total sense to me, because I know that my empathy starts with a very Fi question: "how would I feel in that situation", but then I back it up with data from my Se observations: "how does this person appear to feel about this situation", and round it up with some additional assistance from my Ni: "how have I observed that people typically feel in this situation"... And then, having Te in 4th slot makes me avoid pushiness, causing me to resist imposing my own viewpoints or experiences and instead accept whatever the person expresses to me. So it's a lot heftier of a process because I have to call all of my functions into play, but I told my INFJ friend, "I'm using 3 functions to read people the way you can do with only two!" Haha! I really do love comparing the two feelings functions. I also suspect I have a tidbit of access to real Fe due to having it in 5th slot, versus a type that has it further down the line would resist it more. But it's a love-hate relationship because I feel smothered if I'm forced to use pure Fe and just continually sacrifice my own well-being for the sake of another without it being reciprocated. I find myself a firm believer in the compromise situation where both my own feelings and that of the other person or the group can be considered simultaneously and reach a solution where everyone is taken care of! (An idealistic fantasy situation, I'm fully aware, but many times it can be possible!)

    • @emilys3638
      @emilys3638 2 года назад +1

      @@askarufus7939 To further agree with your statement, I think I've also observed that it's the lower-Fi users (3rd or 4th slot) that actually manifest the more distilled and clarified Fi of "my way or the highway" and "your feelings don't affect me" because their Fe would be way down at 7th or 8th slot, virtually inaccessible in most cases. This isn't to try and build a case that they are more selfish and less capable of empathy, but I would argue that they aren't nearly as likely to reach for empathy in a situation of conflict, since they are prioritizing Te and preferring logic-based solutions. Again, not a bad thing, just not very empathic. There are definitely times where objectivity is more useful and necessary than subjectivity, but that's definitely not where my mind goes first.
      I will add, though, that a person will often lean upon their 4th function in times of stress, so an Fi-dom can be remarkably clear-headed in a situation of emergency using their Te to sort things out, whereas a typically-logical Te-dom would find themselves suddenly stuck in Fi-mode and have difficulty remaining objective (I've observed this happen to my ESTJ aunt on a number of occasions). I've also seen my ISTP mom (a Ti-dom) get stuck in Fe-mode under stress and try to solve everyone's problems and save the day at the expense of her own needs. It's so fascinating to observe how the functions interact with one another in different situations -- they rarely operate in isolation.

At the same time I do really like the cereal so maybe you could recommend an alternative under your brand”- in my experience there nearly always is an alternative. I do feel bad for fe users sometimes when I end up accidentally stressing them out by either saying what I feel or just going with my own flow and not really considering the feelings of the “group” first- more of an afterthought. Rather it’s my “I want to eat cornflakes” side first, then the “oh no I’ve hurt someone, now I need to consider their feelings”. As an ENFP I reaaaally related to Fi in this video. It's not that Fi is selfish, they just don't feel right to not be oneself.
    This Fi-Fe conflict was prominent with two of my INFJ friends. We are OK now, thankfully, but I just hated when they didn't say something I was doing was actually bothering them, and instead, they would bottle those feelings until they explode awfully. Take in consideration I'm autistic, and I always say to whoever is becoming my friend that indirect communication, non-verbal cues, sarcasm, certain jokes, double entendre and especially silences DON'T work on me, sometimes at all. So, it's actually easier to be direct with me, and that doesn't mean being rude. I know they don't speak up because they are trying to care about me, don't like conflict and they also don't want to upset me, but the conflict generated by being direct with me will be much much more minor than keeping it in silence, and I will be much more upset if I find about those feelings later because I will feel like if the other person knew I was making a mistake but let me continue doing it anyways until it was almost beyond repair.
    Also, empathy works different in both types. I think Fe-users not only UNDERSTAND but also FEEL DIRECTLY what the other person is feeling. Meanwhile, Fi-users' empathy process is like this: "So you are going through this difficult situation. I was once to a somewhat similar or analogue situation. In that time I felt this way. So, you probably are feeling a similar way. Therefore, I RELATE to your feelings". Fi-users can care about someone just as much as Fe-users, and not every Fe-user care all the time precisely because their empathy are ON almost all the time. In the case of INFJ, I usually see this is a reason why they need their alone time and space, because it's difficult for them to ignore their Fe-empathy.
    Finally, I don't know if Fi-users (dominant and auxiliary) feel the same about this, but I actually prefer individuals over groups. Since as an ENFP I value authenticity more and I like to know about other people's selves, I find easier to know about that when talking to one on one than being in a group conversation.
    This video was hilarious, I actually laughed a lot with Fe-user being wrongly caught XD XD
    Yay, next time is Te vs Ti! While Si is the most difficult cognitive function to understand especially being my inferior 4th function, the difference between Te and Ti is for me the most difficult to grasp.

    For once, I have to disagree with Kristin. In my experience (also being ENFP) Fi isn't a selfish funcion, quite the opposite actually. Self-centered, yes, missing others needs at times. But when we realise someones needs we identify as strongly (or even stronger) as if our own boundaries were crossed. That's why Fi can be even stricter when it comes to values than Fe. Fe cares because it directly picks up others feelings. Fi cares because it identifys with everyone and everything, even objects occasionaly (yes, the clichée is true). We care just as much, our empathy just works differently

    I don't think eating the cornflakes is the issue here but that Fi is happy to do this in front of Sally who they know it will annoy (despite how silly they may feel this view is) while Fe may well be privately stuffing themselves with cornflakes every day but, crucially, they won't do this in a way that will be discovered by Sally in case it upsets her. Both types may be engaging in selfish behaviour but the crux is whether they allow it to impact others or not.

    The weirdest thing is that being 'selfish' takes a conscious decision for me, while my INFP sister just does it naturally. My thoughts on the skit, as an INFJ
    First to kinda go over the way I see the function theory: Fe/Ti and Te/Fi don't exist by themselves, but as package deals. The ways these functions manifest isn't just about their existence but their strength relative to each other. People who lead with an external judging function (Fe and Te) will correspondingly have a very weak internal judging function (Ti and Fi respectively) and so will be quite at the mercy of judgments made based on external stimuli.
    Thinkers will be able to strongly use both thinking functions, same with feelers - they'll just prefer one. However, both are going to have at least one 'opposite' function theyre super weak in. If a function is their 3rd/tert function, the I/E opposite of that function is their big weakness that they're bad at and don't value in others.
    So I agree with other comments that the first Fi user is IxTJ. ISTJs and INTJs both have tert Fi, which means Fe is their point of least resistance. Not only do they suck at Fe, but they hate it (it's the true opposite of Te, too).
    I think the Fe user is an ExFJ. Fe first means weak Ti, which means- well, let's just say her logic in confronting someone about the cornflakes was not very well thought out. Weak Ti, entirely dependent on external factors.
    BTW, the difference between unvalued weak Fe and valued weak Fe is that an IxTP might still totally operate by their internal logic, but they'd likely appreciate the ExFJs Fe being inserted into that logical structure.
    As an INFJ, Fe would be my 'creative' function that I just use to support my Ni. I wouldn't make a ruckus abt it like the Fe user here, but I'd probably end up paralyzed by indecision at the grocery store deciding what to buy. If I saw p2 eating cornflakes, I might join them if I was nervous but liked cornflakes, but I'd probably end up just observing whatever happens and incorporating that into my framework of social dynamics in the house.
    Oh, all this rambling, it must be because IxFJ's enemy function is Te 😅

    • @modove2842
      @modove2842 2 года назад +1

      @Annie Driller I'm glad you liked the explanation!
      You bring up an interesting point, and the 7th function's dynamic is most likely altered by whether it's a judging or perceiving function, but I'd have to disagree that a perceiving function makes it valued. However, the dynamic you mentioned - of one's own weakness being valued in others - is one that definitely exists, but that would be for... *drumroll* the 4th function :D and so an ESxP values Ni and an INxJ values Se, and so on, making a lot of 'opposite' types actually appreciate each other quite a bit. This is because Se and Ni are packaged together, and same with Si and Ne. (For a Si/Ne appreciation example - an ISxJ, leading with Si, will be quite bad at coming up with new ideas - meaning an ENxP covers for them quite well, and they help the ENxP take care of their own Si!)
      I think, however, there is some confusion among types about being P or J, especially introverts (who's P/J letter is actually opposite of their first function). An INxJ will appreciate Se, but an INxP will be deeply confused by it/why others use it and probably have a strong distaste for it. An ESxP will appreciate others' Ni, but an ESxJ will likely see it as useless, overly abstract pondering completely divorced from the real world (as they perceive it).
      At least, that's the way I (my Ti?) sees it :D

    • @modove2842
      @modove2842 2 года назад +1

      @Annie Driller just a guess, but are you an xxTP? (I'd assume a xxTJ becoming more in touch with their F function would be more focused on Fi, the development of their own values/morals etc while later Fe development would probably be more concerned with the development of ethics/how actions (and Ti-ness in general) impact others)

    • @modove2842
      @modove2842 2 года назад

      @Annie Driller oh cool 😎
      I've been thinking about P 7th functions and I wanna add a few more things - how one person interacts w/ another person's function def depends on How that other function is in someone's type. Also, we need every function capability to help the world spin, but the 7th one in particular can be stressful (bc it's incompatible with the 1st thru 3rd function schema we seem to naturally use to perceive+judge the world). So I totally admire INTJs and respect their Te ability, but I also want to step in and shake them when they make particularly stupid 7th-Fe decisions 😭 cmon INTJs, I know your Fi guides you but sometimes good Fe is literally the difference between life and death... anyway. The INTJ would probably be very confused by my terrible Te as well and how I suck at budgeting and paperwork. But the 2nd function is more of a support for our 1st one, which we share, so we'd end up complimenting each other, I think. (Although we'd still both need someone else to bring the Se 😔)
      So if you're an ISTP, you and an INTP might totally respect the perspective/abilities each other's 2nd function brings... but if an ISTP is in a Ti-Ni loop about other people's intentions, they need Fe reassurance; Ne by itself just gives them more problems to perceive. Likewise, using direct Se on an INTP is likely to freak them out - like an ISTP they also need Fe reassurance. (But an INxJ, despite having Se as an equally weak function, will appreciate it bc it balances out their Ni!)
      Basically, it's not an antipathy towards the function in the abstract, but just a combined weakness in it as well as sense of discomfort when someone else applies it too directly - in contrast w/ the 4th function, which is still weak, but valued.
      Re: tests, I've actually pulled a lot of this theory from socionics. The theory is great imo, complex but in a Ti way. Just one thing: introverts have their P and J letters swapped, and it also uses in tandem a 3 letter system.

    Let me describe how I think about Fe/Fi in a different light
    Recently I was at my relatives house. They live close to us, and they’re mainly Introverted feelers. They have little to no sense of their surroundings. They do what they feel like at any specific moment. They were busting out loud music out of big speakers, in a small apartments compound in a distant quiet area from 12-3am (imagine the echos). 3 days of doing so, the neighbours finally came to their doorstep and explained their anger and how they weren’t able to sleep for several days.
    The thing is, my mom and I (extroverted feelers) already sensed what this situation is coming about from day 1 and warned them about the noise. They refused to listen.

    I genuinely think Fi are selfish and short-sighted. Most of my interactions with Fi are them bringing discomfort to people around them for the sake of their own comfort, and they don’t even know it.

    Weird how I relate much more to the (first) Fi than to the Fe. Are you sure it's not actually Ti? 😉 On the other hand I don't relate to the second Fi at all.

      Yeah, I thought the same thing (I'm ENTP, high Ti, low Fe and nearly non-existent Fi).
      The girl who bought the cornflakes did just what I would, and said just what I would (ironically, I also might do and say what the Fe girl did, but only to prevent the last girl from seeing the cornflakes and disturbing the peace)
      The last Fi girl seemed spot on Fi to me though.

      My guess is first Fi user is T dominant, while second Fi user is F dominant. I'm an INTJ (Te-Fi) and the first Fi user, that would totally be me. The second one? No way am I walking in and being upset over someone eating cornflakes. If we swap it out for Chik-fil-A, which has given money to groups that kill LGBT people, I'd be disappointed in someone eating that, but I'm not inclined to start a fight with them over it. I'm just going to think less of them for it.

      I guess it depends, if the first Fi user highly valued eating cornflakes as a personal thing, they could easily get like this lol.

      I also thought that the first Fi user is like an ISTP totally XDDD
      Anyway my ISFP boyfriend with the blind Ne is also similar to the first Fi user, more than to the second one, but not exactly. The first Fi user is more ISTP XD

      @@jenniferhanses7064 Ooh, yeah, good observation, I think you're right. I also just noticed the first Fi girl puts her feels above others' which I would not do, not 'cause I'm selfless really, but cause I don't really even recognize my feels, so I differ to others' feels as long as they make sense to me, 'cause it does matter to them.
      Also, who's getting paid to kill LGBT people?

    This is fascinating and disturbing as well. My husband is an fe and I am an fi. He wears his compassion on his sleeve and turns himself inside out for those he loves. I am much more self centered

    One of several reasons it took me a while to type myself was because I tried to copy my ESFJ mom. I thought that trying to be more like her would get more people to like me. I still sometimes pretend in public but there is no denying my dominant Fi.

    I hope that I can one day understand high Fi users but alas I don't know that I ever will. Seems freeing (yet isolating) to just do whatever you want whenever you want without having to think about other people, though.

    We may seem silly or naïve because we think first about how people will feel about our actions, but I think this is truly positive, the idea of everyone having an individual point of view and disregarding the other person bothers me a little mainly because I think that part of living in society is finding some concession in our opinions, so I value quite my dominant Fe

    0:50 is this actually about the cornflakes being *that* good, or is it actually about pushing back against someone trying to make you do something?

    This explains pretty well why 2 Fi users wouldn't be a great match if they don't share the same values. Fi users (FPs) are great with Fe users (FJs) because the Fe users will adopt the Fi users values. Just like Te users will adopt the Ti users logical reasonings.

    So, Fe user was ESFJ, Fi user 1 was ISTJ (seems like a tertiary feeling function, but healthy and not suppressed).
    Fi user 2 seemed like an INFP.

    I love these skits cognitive function vs. skits because it gives that Se ideas that makes us rethink about how we can understand people better in actualized reality than just theory or concepts. Also, very funny and relatable. I have a friend who is INFJ and has Fe as 2nd func and I have Te as 2nd and Fi as my 3rd so when I told him I cut people off completely if I don't like them or they're making me inefficient or act unhealthily he said, kindly: "i dont think thats... the best way to do it." I just laughed because I knew it'd freak him out if I kept off the detail that it's usually mutual and communicated that I cut them off.

    Is it because my Fe is so balanced with my Ti...? Yes. Yes, it is. Why? Because while " you don't get to decide what hurts others" is true, what you eat is also not something others get to decide.
    I'm all for caring about other's feelings because Fe does often get the best of me, I'm just not - at all - for placing emotions, my own or those of others, above truth and reason.

  • @Coneman3

    Fe and Fi can both be nonsense as they are based on subjective feelings. The key is finding authentically true values to attach feelings to. Anyone understand?

  • @yerintaem

    I'm an INTJ and my sister and my sister is an INFP (also an Fi user). My mom (an ENFJ) loses her mind whenever the both of us are in a fight. My sister takes a more personal/emotional route than I do and I take a bit more of a rational/insensitive seeming route. My mom always wants us to get along and make up regardless of our feelings for the sake of harmony and even though I love her and understand, a part of me thinks that's it's bit excessive and doesn't make much sense. I feel bad for her though because I know it stresses her out and she isn't able to control it.
