  • Do you know anyone who uses mental illness like it's a quirky trend? Do you have a friend that pretends to have a disorder just for attention? This week, Ben delves into the Gen Z urge to make light of mental illness online from making a caricature out of ADHD to faking Tourette's. Ben gets to the bottom of why exaggerating mental illness online has become so popular.

It makes me so upset when I see people fake mental illnesses and the "symptoms" because as someone who really struggles with ADHD and an anxiety disorder I so wish I didn't have it. Like I used to lay in bed crying when I was younger because I just wanted to be neurotypical and not struggle anymore, and I definitely don't have it as bad as some other people. So it just sucks that people use it for attention, especially since kids who actually have it often get overlooked and bullied.

LITERALLY.I was having a rlly bad tic attack in class ( not Tourettes just tics idk) and I got bullied for it and told I was "attention seeking" yet all these girls at my school get to make fun of mental illnesses and its fine.

    • @margoxathegamer9371
      @margoxathegamer9371 11 месяцев назад +3

@@thewomenwiththepearlearrin4127 Yeah, there are so many people that just disrespect other people that are just "different", it probably all comes from sigma. When they use your weaknesses for laughs and giggles it's like, dude, you think I don't feel anything?
There was a really long period in my life, like a year and a half, where I had ticks every day every hour almost every minute and there have been certain words or sounds that "trigger" me for a long time where I feel REALLY uncomfortable and anxious and want to "shake it of" with some kind of weird action, and these triggers also amplified my ticks.
So I was just at school, when the classes got first merged and almost half of my classmates went to gymnasium and there were a lot of new classmates and some of these I shouldn't have trusted from the very start. I don't want to put labels on people but there is a certain pattern that I noticed that makes for a bingo checklist/starter pack/archetype of a drippy tik-tok vaper teen who listens to braggy Russian rap in portable speakers(I'm from Latvia), insult each other as a joke, disrespect teachers and just are being inappropriate and usually are the bullies and sometimes drink energized drinks and/or have expensive stuff(sometimes) and talk in some teen slang and there were like at least 5 people I know that match all/most of this and there's nothing wrong with people having fun, listening to rap(I listen to rap myself a lot, but usually not that type of rap), vaping or making silly tik-tok videos or drinking energetics or anything(even though energized drinks and vape are not good for one's health, but I mean, it's none of my business), and I don't say these things are directly correlated with each other, it's just usually that these thing coincide with bad behavior, but, yeah, there are many nice people who do something of this, but usually you can just feel the vibes of toxicity coming from a person when they just talk. It's nothing about any of these activities, just when they talk the way they talk you know they are capable of bullying.
And so I had two of these shameless girls that fill the whole bingo and they were just casually minding their own business and doing the sound that triggers me unintentionally(I mean intentionally but not to bully me, because they didn't know yet), I knew it was not their fault, but I kind of wanted to nicely, non-intrusively let them know so they stop and everyone's fine and I'm just different, but I should've known that it doesn't work like that, especially with angry teens, especially unfamiliar people, especially this bingo checklist girls and that it's risky, but I did that and then they just started doing it INTENTIONALLY to bug me. I realized what a mess I've done, because if I wouldn't let them know they would've done it like 100 times rarer. But they didn't know it didn't just annoy me, they made me feel horrible and they laughed at my tics getting stronger(I involuntiarly stretched my mouth in a kind of a smile, but like open teeth and looked more like I was suffering, my hands were shaking 'round, my shoulders were twitching, when I sat down my foot was swiftly knocking/stomping on the ground and it all was UNCONTROLLABLE(mostly) and I annoyed people and was getting tired of movements that I can't even stop and feeling like a shard of glass because I looked so awkward with that stupid stretched face and sometimes could uncontrollably laugh from awkwardness/anxiety like I'm being watched and it makes me nervously laugh(some kind of stress protection mechanism I guess) and I felt like I have no release), and all this time they were constantly asking why I do that BUT didn't let me answer, and there were more classmates joining in triggering me and even the most "goody two shoes" classmates would just judge me and stare at me and ask all these questions which is fine as long as they don't start to intentionally trigger me, laugh at me, which they did sadly. None of them called me names though, well at least that made things better by not getting worse. And they just didn't let me concentrate on lessons and I would just heavily breathe and stop what I was doing to calm down and they said I was dramatizing and yeah it did look really freaky on the outside(me just jumping from a little sound), but I couldn't help myself and it was pretty much real.
I talked to a teacher and then we talked with these girls and asked them to stop(because directly talking to them without the teacher involved did nothing) and they were asking for forgiveness and looked really sorry(even though without the teacher they didn't care at all, were just smiling and not thinking of it much) and so I forgave them under a condition that they'll stop doing that(because otherwise it's pointless) and they made a promise and we even did that hand gesture making a handshake with our pinkies like we're agreeing on piece.
But not that long after they started doing it again like nothing has happened, I felt like I couldn't trust anyone and it was just painful and I didn't get them. It took so much time to make them stop, they didn't. Quarantine just saved me from them(probably the only good thing about quarantine), but then over time my tics gone away and some triggers changed and we moved to the 9th grade and these girls and some boys(the main bullies and some boys that didn't bully) just dropped out of grade 8 because they were just so bad at studying and they really didn't care about school, and they just still were coming to me sometimes and trying to trigger me by the same methods as a softer joke kind of than then and way rarer even though we're not even in the same class anymore but I just felt nothing anymore because triggers change over time and tics have ended, so it would be fitting for me to proudly and dramatically sing at their face: "I've become so numb, I can't feel you there, become so tired, so much more aware, I'm becoming this, all I want to do is be more like me and be less like you(very relatable and fitting song for this situation in my life I think, it resonates, it comforts, it fits with the second part too because I felt like I was being influenced by these kind of bingo checklist people and accidentally hurting other people because I was getting used to insults and percieving them as jokes and it hurt me so much that I was accidentally subconsciously getting influenced by people I didn't like at the very start with things I hate and avoid immediately and know but over time stopped even noticing, and my parents don't even insult each other as a joke, so just the people that aren't even my friends, but aquintances just affect me so much, I usually distance myself from these kind of people, even when I have no other choice, I'd rather be all alone, by myself, I have really good friends though that aren't toxic and I feel like myself and don't feel like I have to pretend to have fun with them because they're not toxic and I actually have fun with them, can trust them and feel comfortable around them, I know that this song is about something else though looking at the verses, but I like these songs that are made to interpret how you want in multiple ways and they're always relatable, not just slightly, but very strongly and yeah, it hurt me that I hurt other people not trying to be rude)".
So four words to choke upon, bullies: "Look at me now" and other four words to choke upon: "How you like that?", but I'm not mad at them anymore and honestly I think bullies make me stronger.
Oops, this comment got way bigger than I expected, but I hope that's okay that I wrote a whole essay, someone will read this.

There’s a girl at my school who is also my friend with Tourette’s syndrome and she is so sweet and kind and it makes me so angry to see people pretend to have it and make fun of her for it. I was new at my school and I sat with my cousin because he was the only person I knew, but after about a week I couldn’t stand the people who he would sit with because every time the girl would make an involuntary noise(usually triggered by loud noises) they would say something along the lines of “hey, [the girls name] there’s no need to yell your battle call” and eventually I ended up sitting with her because she would usually eat alone at lunch. After a while we became pretty good friends and I learned that she’s just a normal girl and that she’s not any different from anybody else. Another thing that makes me angry is that people will say her trigger word (muffin) just to make her feel bad about herself. Yeah, not all Tourette’s is vocal, I knew a guy who had Tourette’s. He took meds, so he didn’t tic a lot, but he did do this thing where he like spread his hand and then balled his fist occasionally. I asked him about it (I thought he did it on purpose, I didn’t find out until I saw “take meds” written on his arm, asked him about it, and he was like “oh it’s to remind me to take my meds for my Tourette’s”) and he told me about his Tourette’s. I’m sure he wasn’t faking because 1. He never went out of his way to talk about his tics or tell other people, 2. His older brother confirmed it too me, when reminding him to take his meds(his brother reminded him and I was like “for his Tourette’s?” And he said “yeah”) 3. He didn’t want to show people his tics.
Also, I knew a kid with autism (I believe you can have tics with autism lemme know if I’m wrong) who did this thing were he’d scrunch up his nose repeatedly. I found this to be annoying (at first I didn’t know he couldn’t control it) and told him so. Hi! Person with ADHD and bipolar disorder here, When Ben was first talking about how people misuse ADHD and OCD in phrases and situations I would also like to mention how much bipolar disorder is misused. There are usually two ends of the spectrum of how people see it, one side is “oh they are insane and can’t be trusted” while the other is “I’m totally bipolar, I woke up in such a good mood this morning now I’m miserable 🤪“ I wish people could see a common ground when looking at bipolar disorder because as someone who is diagnosed, I think it’s used in the completely wrong way, it’s very different from both of the stereotypes. Make sure you know what your saying before you actually say it. Bipolar disorder is a REAL mental illness that REAL people struggle with and isn’t a word to throw into random sentences. Anyways, thanks for listening to my rant 😅

As someone with DID, it sucks so much when people fake it. I've had a friend who faked it, and her "switches" would be staring off into space for a few seconds, looking around, and saying "I switched, I'm *name*". Actual switches take time; around 30-90+ seconds. It takes even more time to ground, and more to figure out who you are, where you are, and what's going on. We're lucky to not always have full amnesia in between switches, but we still have some. People faking disorders really pisses me off.

Okay so storytime. I have diagnosed ADHD, Autism, and very very possible social anxiety. (when I was getting my tests done for the other two the testers both said I show a bunch of signs of social anxiety but I was never diagnosed.) Anyways, I have an IEP and am allowed to chew gum in class, have fidgets, don't need to be timed on tests because it stresses me out A LOT, etc. Some day after a class some girl came up to me and asked about why I could have that stuff and I explained about my disorders. She walked away and the next day she came up to me and said, "I probably have autism." I asked why and she said something along the lines of, "Because I looked up the symptoms and one said about staying in your room alone a lot and I'm ALWAYS in my room." I was confused and asked if that was her only symptom and she said yes. I told her that it was very unlikely she had autism if that was her only symptom. She got very angry and never talked to me again.

I’m so happy that Ben touched on this because it genuinely makes me so angry . I’m personally diagnosed with anxiety and misophonia , both of which are hard to live with . When kids get scared and say stuff like “ I’m having an anxiety attack “ or anything like that , it makes me so mad. Like yes anxiety is common but not every feeling of anxiety is an anxiety attack. And the other way around , having an anxiety attack doesnt mean you have anxiety. A lot of them don’t understand that not every person shakes when having anxiety . Like usually we don’t shake violently like how they fake it . They also don’t understand the other symptoms that can come with anxiety , which are not fun at all. For example , anxiety can come with social anxiety, which is something I also have and it effects me a lot and it’s not fun in any way shape or form . And it also annoys me bc they don’t know the different between being nervous/afraid and being anxious . Also when people fake mental illnesses to seem cool - like bruh what ?-

I was at a mental hospital and I was there for having visual and auditory hallucinations. There was this girl who named all the reasons she was there. Then she asked me. I don’t like talking about it, so I told her because I trusted her. As soon as I said hallucinations, she said “oh yeah me too.” She might have been struggling with that, but the fact that she only remembered until I said it was kinda suspicious to me, because it was such a big problem in my life that I myself could never forget. After that, she made a big deal about dealing with hallucinations and would stare off into the distance and act like she was in a trance or something when people would talk to her. There was one time she did this and people were coming up to her and trying to comfort her and I was too, but people were pushing me out of the way. I got so mad and frustrated because it felt like she was making fun of me and mocking me, but also people pushing me out of the way made me mad because she was getting attention for acting like me, but when I tried to comfort her people pushed and ignored me even though I was the one dealing with this. Faking disorders really can hurt others. I've been tested for ADHD twice because everyone that knows me is certain that I have it, including my therapist and even my mom who homeschooled me from kindergarten - high school (if anyone could tell, it would be her). The tests came back negative both times because they showed spikes in depression, anxiety, and a few other disorders, and the (student) psychologist said that depression and anxiety can cause ADHD symptoms, which is true. But ADHD can also cause anxiety and depression, which is most likely my case. They are so cautious about it because there are so many people coming out and saying that they have ADHD, and it's being over-diagnosed. My point is: people faking it or self-diagnosing themselves with ADHD makes it much harder for people who actually have it to get diagnosed.

I had a crappy friend a while ago who faked DID ( like everyone on tiktok apparently) I eventually connected the dots after doing some research because i wanted to be a good friend i figured out that she was obviously faking and she had no interest in telling anyone but me about it and she would only come to me when she needed or wanted something. For example here, in case you didn’t know DID basically develops usually once you are in your late teens or as an adult as a result from extreme childhood trauma starting at a young age (usually under the age of like 10-12) and I mean EXTREME like physical, mental, emotional abuse, you name it. Your brain comes up with these alternate personalities (alters) and each usually splits up memories to keep you from having the mental burden of all of this trauma at once always on your mind. She was obviously thinking that she was being clever (she also used dream smp members as her “alters”) but she would just “switch” every little while and she would just go “oh i switched now im (insert Minecraft RUclipsr/streamer name here)” she would even put on shitty accents for some of them. After doing my research i found that people who really have DID take between 30-90 seconds to fully switch and it is a stressful and draining thing, you can’t just immediately bounce back to where you were in a conversation. That is just some stuff and I need to go to bed, just needed to tell that to someone because all of my friends know her and even though she hates me now for setting my boundaries against her it feels wrong to share any personal info about her life she gave me in that time, fake or not.

Another thing I would like to add from my own research, is when they do switch they usually can’t even remember what they were previously doing for obvious reasons so when people switch immediately and just start talking like normal or have their alters talk to each other it becomes fairly obvious that it’s fake. Plus majority with it don’t even realize they have it, and a lot end up believing they just have memory loss. You also can’t be diagnosed until a certain age, and it’s very difficult to get a diagnosis for less then like 1% of people actually have it.

My sister has it and she has some things she just does that piss me off a little bit and I tell her to try to say shut up to it. She often “I can’t” or denies doing the thing she did. It is so hard to go through my day and trying to focus when everything is running through my head at once. I cry myself to sleep most nights not knowing who I am and not knowing myself, it is such a struggle and the fact that people fake these things to seem “cool” or “quirky” is so irritating. I have been since around 3 (as my mum teacher that works with a lot of special Ed kids- she cought it early) I didn’t really get why I was different than others so seeing people make light of things that I not only struggled with but couldn’t understand. Mental illness is only “quirky” until it becomes ugly- The same people who did this won’t every understand having gross teeth because you keep forgetting, or hate the feeling of water. They won’t understand why you repeat yourself because when you would go on tangents as a kid everyone would ignore you by stopping talking and just waiting for you to be done. They won’t understand but they can capitalize. It’s painful to see.

I have the physical tics rather than the verbal ones. Sometimes it gets so bad that it is physically painful depending on the tic. And to see someone joke about a daily struggle that you can’t cure or hide is draining. Especially when at the end of the day they get live life normally. Tourette’s is so misunderstood and seen as funny but it’s a constant thorn in my side that gets in the way of everything. Self diagnosis is valid if you've done proper research. I'm self diagnosed as an autistic person because I've done research and my therapist says a lot of my experiences align with autism. I still don't tell many people about this (mainly my parents) because people think I think I'm autistic for a trend. I self diagnosed for comfort and I'm learning to deal with my symptoms that align with autism. I will most likely never get a legal diagnosis because it's not only sexist and im afab but I'm an adult. Diagnosing an adult is difficult because after 17 years of life I have only been unpacking my masking for a year now. Also rights wise, there are people wanting to sign a law that makes it so autistic people can never receive gender affirming care. I am trans and this is vital for my well being.

I actually have OCD and it sucks when people do this. My OCD is the cleanliness type; if I don't wash my hands every 5-10 minutes my skin feels so dirty that the only way to get rid of the feeling is to either wash my hands or claw at my hands. If something unclean touches me it causes me panic and stress, because I feel absolutely filthy. This isn't really the cleanliness type, but I also get random thoughts in my brain like "touch all your fingertips together until they feel right or your best friend will die" and others like that. It really sucks, and it sucks when people fake it.
