My man! I need a weekly video from you 😆. - Not only are you saying what is unsaid but you explain it with ease… I can tell this has been on your chest and I’m grateful you got it off. Keep them coming bro. Thank you for sharing yo
You are spot on, this one has been on my chest for a while! I've had many conversations with people that try to explain that buying high quality seed is not worth it and its all the same. So, I just let the numbers do the talking. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
Mountain View Top Choice fescue blends are the way to go, the come in very dark and grow thicker than anything else I've grown. I want to thank you personally for making your videos that led me to it. Newsom seed has been great to deal with, my only complaint is you never get the same blends each time you visit, although I doubt most could tell the difference once it matures. Pete was right to upgrade to the Mountain View blends. His seed was really good, but they were mostly older blends, and didn't hold up as well under the summer stress here on the Eastern shore. Anyway, thanks for doing what you do, I refer people to your videos all the times to help educate DYI folks.
I appreciate your feedback and your support to the channel 🙏🏾! I agree with everything you said about MVS those are the same experiences that I have had also. I think its good that Newsom gets some different cultivars each year. Typically the Titanium is the foundation and the other 2 cultivars may change to one of the new MVS cultivars. I think Pete made the right move too and I have used his original seed also. Again, thank you 🙏🏾!
@elevatedlawnscapes I purchased GCI Turf Blend last year Aug 2022. I used it to overseed last year and this year. Great seed but I find the blade to be finer than I would like. Do you know if the Mountain View variety that GCI is selling has a thicker blade? I am not looking for a thick blade but wanted something slightly thicker maybe 2 mm thick. Thanks
@@hansfranz9914 Mountain View Seed varieties are not going to be thicker than the previous GCI varieties. The turf type fescue varieties are bred to have a thinner blade, thats more preferred in the market.
Quick question - I just saw that my Lowe’s carries Mountain View Seed TTTF - i picked some up and am giving it a try. It has 0% weed which was good…the only thing I didn’t realize was that it is a coated seed but we will see. Have you heard anything about this?
I have and its their way of bringing better cultivars to the big box stores. I don't exactly like that it is a coated seed but it is MVS cultivars. They are only in stores in PA and Ohio right now I believe.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes thanks - yep I’m in PA. We will see how it goes…I threw it down at the beginning of last week and am hoping for some germination any day now.
I was also gonna say in Maryland you can usually pick up Johnathan Green Black Beauty Seed from local shops or Ace Hardware. They have a Delmarva Fescue blend Blend which is great ✊🏾 Btw, do you have experience using RTF Fescue?
Before I started paying attention to lawn care. I was just going to buy seeds and dirt. Having it delivered leveling it out and go on about my business now. I pay a little more attention for somebody to not be right. This one landscaping store was selling seeds in a paper bag. With the name Lescos on it that they printed. No other information on it. It had stuff like shade mix. How many ounces? How many pounds to cover a certain square feet? And that was it no real detail.
Thanks man! Yes, it can grow in warmer climates. The newer cultivars of turf type tall fescues that I talk about from Mountain View Seed are a lot more drought and heat tolerant. During the really hot periods it may need a more care (mainly water and possible fungicides for disease) than a warm season grass type to keep it lush. You have the option of just letting it go dormant during those periods and let it come back when the rain and cooler temps return. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Trash is really all those big boxes sell-everything. They have cheapened everything, including all the stuff you grew up believing was quality. Man, I had a John Deere dealer explain the difference between the real ones & the “Lowes/ Depot JD’s”. Plumbers told me the same with certain reputable fixtures. The big box ones were plastic on the insides rather than brass like at a plumbing supply house. Sacrete/ Quikcrete? Trash nowadays. It’s total deception of the paying public on damn near everything in that joint!
I live in Georgia with some trees on my lawn I've been using scotts dense shade mix. After viewing your video what fescue grass seed can you recommend.
Cam, This is off the subject but I have a ton of knats especially when I cut and now it seems like there flying all over any suggestions on how to get ride of them quickly.
As I have stated before I recommend finding the seed locally or ordering from one of the numerous online distributors. I have not recommended the version you bought for that reason. Gotta read the labels and know what you are buying.
Great advice bro. Thanks for clearing that up for us lawn 🌿 junkies lol 😂. I was this day old when I learned this lol. I just saw that Homedepot sale Mountain View seeds through their website to be delivered to the store or to your home look at God work.
I’m in the DMV too, I’ve been using Mountain View Winner’s Circle for about 6 years (it’s a blend just like Top Choice), I usually have to drive to Fredericksburg to a place called Aquarius Supply to get it. It’s good that Pete is using it now, I asked him about it a couple years ago. Now I can have it delivered from him when I don’t feel like driving, lol. (Side note: Like many others MV had increased their prices like everyone else during the pandemic/supply chain mess, I was getting a 50lb bag for $99 in 2019, it was up to $196 by 2022. This year it was down to $122 ($106 for Aquarius account holders) for a 50lb bag…I noticed Pete is selling his at $174 for a 45lb bag. I wonder why he still has pandemic prices…maybe you can ask him? Lol)
I have seen Winners Circle at Newsom Seed also for another local option if they are closer to you. I remember buying Top Choice for $85 for a 50 lb bag. Pete's price has the shipping cost included. Thats also the reason for the 45 lb bag instead of the 50 lb bag. Many companies have switched to 45 bags of even fertilizer because of the shipping issues of 50 lbs vs 45 lbs. The convenience of getting things shipped to your door comes at a cost, its the way it is.
👍Yes sir! I’ve learned my lesson on Big Box stores too. Expensive lesson indeed. I now only buy the (GCI) Blue Tag Premium seed. Like anything else, You get what ya pay for. Thx for the info. 👍🇺🇸
It depends on what HOC you want to maintain your lawn. I recommend to maintain it at 3" so I would start cutting it soon after it gets to about 3.25-3.5".
I just seen 3 lb MVS coated seed in Lowe's. Didn't know they sold there. It was mostly shade and homeowner mixes. They did have some top scoring fescue cultivars though in those mixes. Surprised me
What did the tag say on the seed bag? I don't care what the packaging of the product looks like if it has a quality product inside the packaging. Im not expecting results from the packaging. Lesco bags in my area typically have a decent seed mixture/blend in them. I wouldn't call it elite seed but it's a good blend.
I live in Northern Virginia and drive to Newsome Seed in Gaithersburg, MD. I call them up and they have (2) 50lb bags waiting for me to purchase. Just trying to get my lawn to look like Cam's, gotta a ways to go. This seed is the truth. Cam is the Man!!!

Ugh. I just subscribed this week, but I bought a bag from Ryan Knorr Lawn Care for around the same price. It was a 25lb bag of bluegrass; I would have preferred a larger size. Will have to try out some of these seeds someday. Not sure if fescue is a good mix with bluegrass?
Thank you Cam spot on. I can get Mountain View Seed locally and I just picked up 25 pounds. This will be my second season using this tall fescue blend it's fantastic. I have referred my sons, neighbors, and friends to your channel, nobody explains it better than you Cam about the whole process.Thank you
Went out looking for a dense shade only seed the other day. I walked out with nothing. The bag said use date 3/23. Went to another store still could not see buying the seed that had .09 other weed crop. Ended ordering the seed from super seed store blue tag. Thanks for assuring me that I did the right thing. I was thinking maybe I was being picky.
It could but I do not think that it is the best option for the Florida climate. I would recommend a warm season grass type which would make the maintenance more manageable for a homeowner.
It definitely feels good to use quality seed. Another thing i noticed above big box stores is they dont care what the date on the bag meaning the bag you purchase may be a couple of years old

I just use Jonathan Green. They work
Use what works for you. Jonathan Green is overpriced in my opinion for what you get.
Yassss! Hey Cam! My lawn was full of clover and other weeds from the grass seed bought from the big box store. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Please review the label for your target insect but maybe use Bifenthren or a product with that ingredient.
I purchased Mountain View Midwest mix and it was no different than big box brands. It had great cultivars but too much inert matter and seed coatings.
