Fun fact: the name the Doctor gives at the start, 'James McCrimmon', is actually the name of one of the 2nd Doctor's companions from back in the 60s, better known as Jamie, he was Scottish too. This show has a lot of nice little nods to previous companions now and then...
If memory serves, young Jamie is the title holder for longest running Dr Who companion (113 episodes), being with Troughton for all of his tenure except the first story. Sarah Jane is next of course (86 episodes), followed by the very first companion Ian Chesterton (78 episodes).
@@ashleytuchin7693Oh he was, very much so. Patrick had jamie, Jon had Jo, Tom had Sarah Jane. Something we wouldn't really see again until Sylvester and Ace. Not too sure if you can say the same for Peter and Tegan; they always came across as too adversarial. Colin was written brash and hard to like, though he and Peri had some moments. William with Ian and Barbara was a little different too, possibly because of the difference in their ages. He grew to respect and like immensely, but one couldn't help but think of it more as a teacher/student like relationship.
I love Victoria’s speech to the doctor and rose at the end. It’s a little eye opener to the audience that yes we’ve had a fun little vampire romp with the doctor and rose but then we get into the actual characters point of view where for them it’s been terrifying, people have died, there were terrible ungodly creatures and they’ve been having fun all the way, making jokes and not really being serious
@N0-1_H3r3 Yes, but it's still not his real accent. It's very odd to hear Tennant use a fake Scottish accent after seeing so many interviews with him.
@@rampz975 ye I know, he’s putting on a more posh old timey Scottish accent. David is from paisley near Glasgow so it does sounds a bit different. I just meant real as in he’s speaking with Scots dialect.
I love this episode, and I think it's fun that the origin story of Torchwood as an organisation is hidden away in a monster-of-the-week story rather than being part of a series climax. It's a little reward for everyone who watches every episode! Thank you! ❤
The short version of the origins of Torchwood; back in the 70s and 80s, Dr Who was popular on the BBC. When the production crew would scout an outdoor location for filming the land owner would jack up the rental price knowing that Dr Who was a popular show. To avoid this, the crew would use "Torchwood" as the production title, saying it was a BBC drama being filmed.
I believe that it was also used on the first reels of film when they were sent to be developed to avoid theft and spoilers... Also, "Torchwood" is an anagram of "Doctor Who".
Lovely little detail, the Doctor's alias "Jamie McCrimmon" was a companion of the Second Doctor; and Jamie is arguably the first companion that the Doctor was romantic with. As both actors Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines kept acting as if their characters were a couple, or a much as you could get away with in 1960's BBC programming.
David's usual accent is a bit different from many, probably because he has spent so much time using English accents and has lived in England longer than he actually lived in Scotland. He said in this his accent was not quite his natural one, but more Glaswegian.
So a fun fact! (well a couple) The name that The Doctor gave, James McCrimmon, was the name of a companion of the Second Doctor, from the Classic Who era. The name Torchwood is 1) an anagram of Doctor Who and 2) was the name they used when filming the first few episodes of Doctor Who to, basically disguise that was what they were filming so they wouldn't be interrupted.
Looking back at this episode see how the Doctor & Rose got compulsive desire for excitement & danger bit of adrenaline rush. Which never a good thing all the time.
I always feel like I'm not going to enjoy this episode on rewatches, and then I'm always amazed at how much I end up loving it. I think it's because it's the perfect blend of atmosphere and humor (Rose's attempts to get the queen to say her famous line cracks me up every time). And I love that David is essentially doing an impression of an English accented person imitating a Scottish accent which sounds nothing like his real Scottish accent. Talk about acting! Thanks as always!
The showrunner for this era of Doctor Who had a really cool trick of laying hints for the finale throughout the season. In the previous run it was the Bad Wolf message. In this season, Torchwood. Without saying anything spoilery they start doing very, very cool things with this in the next few seasons; so keep an eye out.
@@AmazingChi And of course he is also fond of false trails. So when Torchwood was first mentioned a number of people latched onto the fact that it is an anagram of Doctor Who.
The diamond, the Koh-i-Noor, is real and on display a the Tower of London which, weirdly, isn't actually a tower (though it's right next to Tower Bridge which, notably, _does_ have towers but is named after the Tower of London). When Dr Who was being rebooted, they didn't want information getting leaked when scripts, costumes, etc, was being moved around, so they labeled everything with the code name "Torchwood" which is an anagram of "Doctor Who". They clearly liked the name so much they integrated it into the show and then, they continued to like it so much the first spinoff of the reboot was named after it. I wonder if things for the Tochwood TV show were similarly kept under wraps by labeling them with "Doctor Who".
The fake doctor name James McCrimmon (Jamie) was the name of a companion of the second doctor from the mid 1700s from the highlands of scotland. There were best of friends. Also the actress who plays queen victoria in this episode played another character in the second doctor story the faceless ones from 1967. Jamie McCrimmon and her became very close. The black and white era of doctor who from the 1960s is a must watch.
Gotta say J-bird I'm impressed at how quickly you piece together stuff in these shows like the transmat beam and the diamonds use in the telescope. To quote Lord Vader; " Impressive, most impressive." This was one of those historical meets alien episodes that I do enjoy. And the torchwood lore seeing it's start here because of the doctor was a nice touch after what Harriette Jones said to him about being another alien threat. Keep this episode in mind because that concept of the doctor comes around a lot in years to come.
James Mccrimmon - Second Doctor's Scottish companion Jamie from 1746! Always in his hearts.❤❤ Yes, that inspired Outlander. Jamie Fraser. Jamie Mccrimmon played by Frazer Hines. Frazer got a role in the Outlander TV series. "You have something of the Wolf about you." 👍
This episode isn't anything remarkable, but it _is_ a lot of fun! If I'm not mistaken, it's also the first Doctor Who episode to feature a Werewolf - which is surprising, given that there were a whole bunch of gothic-horror themed episodes in the '70s (one 7th Doctor episode had a character who was sort of werewolf-ish; she turned all claws and fangs in the full moon, but she was green and sort of punk-rock; not a wolf). Other commenters have pointed out that the name the Doctor gives, "James MacCrimmon", was the name of a Companion of the 2nd Doctor, but what I've not seen mentioned is that the actress who played Queen Victoria - Pauline Collins - was almost a companion alongside him! In the 1967 episode _The Faceless Ones,_ she played a fierce, strong-willed young woman who helps the Doctor defeat the alien threat. The producers asked Collins to stay on as a new companion, but she didn't want to get tied down to a single project. What you said at the end there - I do that, too! Picking up a bit of the accent of characters in shows I've been watching a lot lately. Good to know I'm not the only one who does that!
The name the Doctor uses "Doctor James McCrimmon" is in reference to the 2nd Doctor's companion Jamie McCrimmon, who was a Scottish highlander from the 1700s. One of the longest running companions, his first episode was only in the 2nd Doctor's second story, and stayed with him until a few moments before the 2nd Doctor's regeneration into the Third. The second Doctor had 3 seasons total, with Jamie appearing in 112 episodes (20 serials) out of the 2nd Doctor's total of 119 episodes (21 serials). The actress who played Queen Victoria also played a side character in Classic Who! It was called "The Faceless Ones" which was also a 2nd Doctor & Jamie episode. She played a side character named Samantha Collins who helped the Doctor and Jamie (and Ben and Polly, with the Faceless Ones being their last story on the show) save the day from aliens. I believe she was invited to be a fulltime companion on the show but she declined the offer.
It's been years since I first saw this episode but Rose trying to get the Queen to say she is not amused is something that I still think about all the time. And on a completely unrelated note, I really like the dress you're wearing in this reaction Jules. It's lovely.
Awww thank you so much 💜 that's lovely of you to say! I sometimes make an effort but it's been colder weather so I can wear different things. It's so hot here in summer that I'm pretty much only ever in singlets haha
@@julesreactsHope you’re not in Alice Springs! I can’t imagine the heat there… (I have a Kangaroo Sanctuary feed from A.S. on Instagram-little joeys in pillowcases lined up together on couches, or mobs hopping after humans getting bottles prepared…)
I'm so happy you're growing accustomed to the new Doctor, Juliette. He's terrific 😊 I know you're a bit ahead of us. Lots of great episodes upcoming and I'm having a blast watching these again
I did like tie in at the end of the royal family being carriers of haemophilia. And also that they managed to craft the well used trope of werewolf into a nice derivation thereof. Regarding the quality of the special effects: this one did a nice job. But I am not mad about the, let's call them, more improvised ones on Buffy as long as they serve to tell an interesting and engaging story. And that they do on BtVS, the writing is mostly outstanding. Especially compared to a lot of very recent productions.
It's Wednesday afternoon here and it is Doctor Who Day with Tooth and Claw, i really like David Tennant he is a great actor and I like his episodes as the Doctor i really like the location that they shot this in, have a great rest of the week and take care my friend Juliette see you later in the week.😊🤠👑🇭🇲🇭🇲
@@julesreacts well.. i guess, the guys from x-files, just did not get the meaning, when the crossover happened... think about all the x-files and then think of the twist: that they just did not witness the doctor while theese strange things happened....
26:40 When I first watched Doctor Who about a decade ago, I got into the habit of saying "oi" for like a year. I finally stopped altogether a few years later. Now, watching reactions to Doctor and British RUclipsrs, I sometimes start using British words by accident. And yes, the Scottish accent is sexy AF...
I was looking forward to you getting to this episode its one of my favourite its just such fun. Also about the death of the werewolf I believe when he says "let me go" its not the werewolf talking its the boy that the werewolf infected.
Torchwood was also mentioned in season one. as a side note Torchwood was the production name for Doctor Who so know one knew what it was. Its also a anagram of Doctor Who.
Fantastic episode, glad you enjoyed it Jules. 'Base Under Siege' is a format that Doctor Who does so well and the show still finds new ways to put a novel spin on it. Apart from a brief mention in 'The Christmas Invasion', this is our first introduction to Torchwood and we get to see the organisation's origin story! Much more to come including a spin-off series, but make sure to avoid spoilers for that show for now! The first season of Torchwood aired in the gap between the second and third seasons of Doctor Who. I'm really glad you're enjoying David Tennant's brilliant Doctor.
My favourite part of this episode is Rose constantly trying to get Queen Victoria to declare "we are not amused," even though in real life she supposedly never actually said it! Still, can't blame her for trying, it's a famous misconception.
Really off-topic, I guess, but good LORD, I still can't get over Michelle Duncan's eyes (the lady playing Lady Isobel). They are such a vivid dark blue. All these years, and it still attracts my attention when she comes on the screen.
Queen Victoria establishes Torchwood and is a werewolf... I love this show. LOL It will probably be said over and over that Tennant is actually IRL Scottish. So I'm a drop in the bucket. What I will say that probably isn't a drop in the bucket is I feel like an annoying friend waiting for someone else to watch and catch up on Doctor Who. Watching this vicariously again is a freaking thrill. This show will change you, it's just inevitable.
Jules, it's a shame Torchwood has been mentioned in the comments. It would have been better if you had discovered it as you watched this season like we did. The Doctor's alias that he used in this episode, James (Jamie) McCrimmon was a very popular companion of the second Doctor (my Doctor) in the late sixties. Also, Pauline Collins who played Queen Victoria in this episode appeared in a second Doctor and Jamie story during that time. The producers wanted her to stay on as a new companion but she declined.
It is a shame that some things get spoiled 😔 there have been endless comments about Torchwood, almost since the beginning of the series! I still don't know what it means, so at least I'm blind in that way, thankfully ☺️ I love that there's a lot of re-use of actors and props and places! It really does feel like they want to still honour and respect the classic series. I love it. It does make me feel I wish I knew more, but I also feel I can watch along happily and learn as I go 💜
If you ever want to see a great werewolf transformation, Juliette, you need to watch the film An American Werewolf in London Regarding accents, I have a fairly strong NY accent. I also speak pretty quickly as do many New Yorkers. However, I lived for just under 10 years in the Southern part of the USA. When I would go out to eat there, the waiter would actually have a hard time understanding both my accent and the speed at which I spoke🤣. However, after a few years there, I began to speak with a bit of a southern accent and the speed of my speech became more leisurely. It's amazing how quickly one can pick things up!! So, I'm not surprised that you hear yourself talking like Rose Anyway, I've been back in NY for years now and my strong NY accent is back which is probably akin to how Cro-Magnon sounded like. haha
"I'm Doctor James Mccrimmon" Jamie... Gosh, I miss him... I'm on Fourth Doctor Era (halfway era, so no spoilers, I'm with the one that use a knfe XD) Also, your face just lit up when the Doctor mentioned Queen Victoria. I mean, who doesn't?! Seeing historical figure right in front of you... that will be amazing~
I have to agree. For a CGI effect from 2006, the werewolf still looks fantastic. Of course, it can't be compared to films like "An American Werewolf In London" or "The Howling", but it's still an amazing effect.
When the Doctor falsely introduces himself as "James Robert McCrimmon" with a scots accent which is David Tennant's real accent it was a reference to the Second Doctor's (Patrick Troughton) companion Jamie McCrimmon who was Scottish from the year 1746. Pauline Collins who plays Queen Victoria also had a guest role as another character in Dr. Who during the 1960's and was almost a companion but she declined as she didn't want to commit to a long running series she is also best known as Sarah Moffatt from a 1970's british TV series called "Upstairs, Downstairs". Ello is a british slang dropping the ''H'' from the ''Hello'' is intended to make the pronunciation sounds similar to the famous ''cockney'' accent, associated with the East of London. Today, it is only really used by people teasing their British colleagues.
The name Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who and was often used on scripts to hide the fact that they were scripts for upcoming episodes of Doctor Who.
This is the most important episode regarding Torchwood, and I loved how your face lit up when they first mentioned it. Much of the werewolf special F/X remind me very much like those from the movie "An American Werewolf in London" that was done by Rick Baker, which I highly suggest. Hopefully there won't be some idiot giving out any spoilers, especially for Torchwood.
I remember watching this episode, and I kept wondering why they called the Queen, "Mom." Then it took me a while to realize that "ma'am" seems to be in common usage for the Brits and is pronounced exactly like "mom" in America.
Interestingly enough, to the UK ear they sound different (the way people from the US say 'Mom' doesn't sound the same as how we say 'Ma'am'). (for info, it's just a contraction of 'madam' and addressing royalty or female superiors in hierarchal organisations like the police or armed forces is about the only time it crops up so kind of "semi-common usage" i'd say - in most contexts we'd just use 'madam')
Finally someone who loves this werewolf too!!! Sure it might not be 'oooo realistic convincing ' but it's BEAUTIFUL. I totally understand the Doctor's reaction 😆 I love the voice of the guy who plays it too, makes me think of old faerie legends. This is up there as one of my favourite 'Easy' episodes
Honestly, I'm easily pleased 🤣 I've been watching Buffy where their werewolf is a man in a costume running around on all fours, so this one was an improvement hahaha
I’m not to sure who does the sound effects, but you have Murray Gold to thank for all the orchestral music and sounds. He has made some unforgettable tracks for this show.
This episode has a special place for me, as it was my first ever episode of Doctor Who, back in the day there was a companion series 'Totally Doctor Who; that aired on CBBC directly before the episode(I honestly don't recall much about it, as I recall it was a studio set series, not in universe or anything, just stuff to amuse kids, I think in series 3 there was some kind of animated story reeased in parts with each episode) and it ended with a pview of the epiosde that would then air on BBC 1, I happened upon it on the saturday this episode aired, couldn't be bothered to change channels and watched it, saw the teaser and was tempted into watching the episode, at which point I was hooked on the series, a love for the show that continues to this day. Also, and amusing note for classic fans is that the Doctor's alias in this episode: James McCrimon, was the second Doctor's most long running companion, Jamie, who was with the Doctor from his second serial, the Highlanders, all the way to The War Games, the episode that the Doctor regenerated into the thrid Doctor which makes him the compaion who was present for the highest percentage of their Doctor's run in all of classic Who.
We ARE amused with this episode! Loved the idea of putting a werewolf in a contained area like a mansion and its corridors etc. The episodes where they go back in time are always a lot of fun. If you enjoy werewolves in general, I recommend a British film called Dog Soldiers. I grew up not too far from where Rose was supposed to grow up, so I to drop my H's a lot! 😂😂😂
Did you know that "TORCHWOOD" is an anagram for "DOCTOR WHO"? In fact, during the production of Series 1 of NuWho, tapes and casting calls would often be labelled under the name "Torchwood", to throw off scoop-hungry tabloid media and, later, potential media pirates. Another fun fact: the word "Torchwood" actually makes an appearance back in Series 1 as well. In the episode _Bad Wolf_ (the penultimate episode of Series 1), "The Torchwood Institute" is one of the answers Rose gets wrong during her stint on the Year 200,100 version of _The Weakest Link_ .
So far in this season we've had two episodes with Rose and Doctor basically acting in a reckless romantic fashion. The queen finally calls them out for it. One almost might say they're disrespectful of the death and danger all around them. I don't know what it is specifically, but that shot of David Tennant looking at the werewolf and saying "oh... that's beautiful!" Has stuck with me as one of the most quintessential moments of his run. There's just something about it that speaks to the whole of his character. The love of the universe, the romantic nature of this version of the doctor. This is one of those episodes that often gets overlooked in the grand scheme, even though there's quite a bit going on here. The next episode is... Really quite good. That reminds me, Jules. Have you considered taking a peak back at some classic who? The first serial from 1963? A classic from the 4th Doctor's era like "Genesis of the Daleks" ?
Yes!! I loved his love for the werewolf! He just has this full of wonder side to him. It really is infectious! I don't have access to classic who so I'll have to get it on DVD one day!
I am really enjoying this reaction series, and I'm glad you are enjoying Tennant! There is a lot ahead, and I am absolutely looking forward to your reactions to what is to come.
Thank you so much!! It's funny because I don't start with American accents after watching Buffy or X Files... there's just something about Rose's accent that sets me off hahaha
I'm a Japanese guy who spent eight years of childhood in rural America, so my English has an accent from that part of the world. However, after a year or so of binge-watching QI and Doctor Who (and other British shows), I noticed that my accent was taking on a British tinge. Weird, really.
David Tennant doing a good job may be aided by the fact that he is a promoted Fan boy. 😂 The writer of Dalek mentioned that David had talked to him back when they were both doing audios 2003/4 (never the same audio, though.)
"I'm surprised the people in the house tried to fight them" They are Scots Jules, during an attack in glasgow the public beat up the man who was on fire
it is never mentioned in the show so it's not a spoiler, but Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. It's not part of any plot - just the writers having an in-joke with it's name.
Just a little clarification. It's not called a Season but a Series. That's how DW Fans differentiate between the New and the Classic show. Classic Who actually called it Seasons.
@@julesreacts No problem. It's fun to see newcomers finding their way into the show. Also a little fun fact while we're at it, try to switch the letters of the word Torchwood around and maybe you find a hidden meaning.
Yes, many people were turned off by Doctor Who's "bad effects" but I didn't mind. And it does get better over time. I mean, you'll always have your more lower budget episodes, but I would say, the look and the quality of special effects and cgi, if used get a lot better at least from series 5 onward. And they've become pretty up to date since series 11. But that's just my subjective assessment.
The episode where Oz took a trip to Scotland. 😉 (It is kind of funny that you called this episode a Buffy crossover, when the next episode actually has a Buffy actor in it.) This is a really fun and interesting episode, yet very underrated. I love the energy that Ten and Rose bring into it, they feel like a couple of young people backpacking through time and space, and having the time of their lives. I love that we get a classic case of the TARDIS arriving in the wrong place, leading to those great jokes about Rose's "nakedness".😂 That outfit is actually really popular among cosplayers and at the beginning of the year I took part in a Doctor Who cosplay photoshoot, where our Rose wore that very outfit. This wasn't the first time Doctor Who did werewolves, but it still feels very unique for a sci-fi show. The ninja monks also help to add a unique flavour to it, not at all the type of thing you'd expect. Side-note: the Doctor's line about books being weapons is one of my favourite lines. You've no doubt been told by now that David Tennant is indeed Scottish, but the accent he puts on here is slightly different to his real accent. Still, I'm sure it was fun for him to play around with it. Fun fact: the alias the Doctor uses, James McCrimmon, is a reference to the Second Doctor's companion, Jamie McCrimmon. He was a Highlander from 1745 and one of the Doctor's longest-serving companions. He's a personal favourite of mine and coincidentally, he'll be in Adelaide and Brisbane in November for some conventions. Finally, this episode really does a lot to add to the ongoing Torchwood arc. I'll say no more about how what's happening here connects to the spin-off show, all will be revealed in due time. The next episode is such a huge and important one and I apologise in advance, but I'm going to absolutely unload a whole lot of lore and backstory to give you some context. 😂
Likening Dr Who to Buffy is hilarious. The latter lasted what - 7 seasons? Whereas Dr Who is coming up to it's 60th anniversary! Can you imagine any American show lasting so long?
Maybe Oz did take a little vacation in this one 🤣🤣 I love that! I'm still sometimes surprised about his alter ego but I couldn't imagine anyone better to be a hairy beast than beautiful, quiet Oz! I've seen the next episode (AMAZING and I was very excited haha) and I welcome the lore when it's time 🥰 I have to say, it's the only time right now that I feel I would have wanted to really know more history to make some of the moments so very special 💜
In terms of Torchwood (the show), I recommend starting to watch that show after this season ends! It does overlap with doctor who a few times for a couple of seasons. I can only recommend Torchwood seasons 1-3 though. Don’t look up anything to do with the show until finishing this season!
I believe Tennant quite enjoyed filming this episode, as he got to use his natural voice for some of the filming. Being Scottish, he has to use an English accent most of the time, which is very good, but it must come as a relief to be able to use your normal voice every once in a while. :D The only time his accent slips is when he uses the syllable "oon", and an upcoming episode was written, as a joke on Tennant, to for him to keep his English accent when saying a sentence that has three "oon"s in it. :P
I'm pretty clumsy on the dance floor, but let's see if I can tango around spoilers. When I first watched Doctor Who, I didn't bother with Torchwood when it began. It took the episodes Stolen Earth and Journey's End, to make me go out and buy Torchwood rather than wait for the SyFy channel to repeat the episodes. While I like Torchwood quite a bit, I don't think it's as good as Doctor Who. If you watch it, I don't think you need to react outside a couple episodes. You'll know them when you see them. It will help to be familiar with Torchwood by the end of Season 4 of Doctor Who. I was watching Doctor Who as it aired, and Torchwood premiered alongside it. By not watching it, I'm about where you are now, with hints here and there. I didn't have to worry about spoilers because there weren't a lot of react channels and I didn't own a computer until 2014, so no posts to ruin anything. Love watching your reactions. Just finished rewatching Band Of Brothers and am going to rewatch your reactions. Forgot just how much I loved that series before your reactions. Take care.
Oooh thank you for your thoughts on Torchwood! Honestly, I might just watch it by myself. I don't have time for another series to react to as the editing takes so long, and I also don't want to pause Who. So maybe just watching most by myself and asking which ones people want to see might be a good way to go 💜
@@julesreactsIf you do…. There are no reactions to Torchwood. I’m unfamiliar with the process of creating a reaction video but I can guess: why not record your reactions and shelve them, deferring a decision as to whether you want to edit the raw footage into a reaction video? You might decide it is worth reacting to a show no one else is covering-or you might decide to pass. But you would have preserved your reactions and thus have the flexibility…
Yeah, David Tennant was born David McDonald and is indeed Scottish. His accent here is close to his natural accent but "turned up a notch" (he's leaning into it a bit in other words, either because, albeit still certainly Scottish, his natural accent has softened over years of living in England or maybe to give the impression of someone _not_ using their natural accent but putting one on). (Tennant narrated some of the 'Doctor Who' audiobooks BTW and it's fun to hear him reading in his own accent but then instantly dropping into his English accent for the Tenth Doctor's dialogue :)
@@julesreacts It's a union thing. When he was joining Equity (the UK actor's union) there was already another David McDonald on the books and apparently you're not allowed duplicates so he had to choose a stage name (story goes he was trying to think of one while leafing through the UK pop magazine 'Smash Hits', which happened to have an article on the Pet Shop Boys and lead singer Neil _Tennant_ :). (in one of a few ways nuWho glancingly intersects with my life BTW, his dad used to be a minister in the Church of Scotland and my parents attended some of his services back in the day. Not that big a country Scotland, at least geographically :)
I know watching Torchwood isn’t necessary to enjoy the show, so you can if you want and it will add enjoyment, but its not required. I didn’t watch it and I never felt very lost myself.
Yeah, I'm still unsure to be honest! I think it might be something I watch down the track, perhaps even when I've caught up with all the New Who episodes. I just don't like the idea of having a 3 month break away from Who as we watch Torchwood.
Depending on the time you have available you can watch Torchwood at the same time after you have passed the end of Season 2. IMO, it’s better to wait until the end of Season 3 because events on DW more fully set up the characters. If there’s no rush, waiting until the end of Season 4 clears pretty much all the Torchwood breadcrumbs for the duration. I’d definitely wait until after Season 3 or 4. Torchwood Season four is controversial and a bit contentious. The premise is very disturbing but-spoilers. But Torchwood is a dark show! If a season is dark in relation to a dark show… Anyway, I think you should make up you’re own mind. IMO Season 3 is just as disturbing. Brilliant, but disturbing.
@@julesreacts 🤣🤣🤣 After a Tennet who rewatch i tend to enter places saying 'Oh yes" as he tends to do but keep my hs' Dr Who just affects people that way i guess 🤣 Hope you have a good rest of your week!
first of all. buffy is older than these episodes of doctor who. buffy is a lot lot newer than the series as a whole. 1963 the first ep aired. 2nd of all i find it interesting when who's effects are praised. i mean some of the monsters are legendary for being ridiculously campy.
People have already explained Jamie in the comments (the longest-ever serving companion by episode count) which was a lovely shout out to him and one of the best ever Doctor-Companion duos (adding in Zoe as part of a legendary TARDIS team). A bit of added trivia to that is that the actress playing Queen Victoria actually played a guest character (who nearly became a companion) in a 1967 story during which she actually kissed Jamie, though I'm not sure if the reference was meant to be taken quite that far. It's always interesting to see characters get fed up of the Doctor's attitude to danger, which is reasonable enough and I find myself agreeing with the Queen. The Doctor does need putting in their place sometimes. As for your expecting Torchwood to be an organisation working with the Doctor, and while I won't spoil anything in relation to Torchwood, since you know about UNIT I don't think it's a spoiler to mention them as having been somewhat in that role over the years, even if their revival appearances tend to be minor for a while. Oh and it may be going quickly for you but it's going very slowly for me, given how much I'm excited for you to get to but knowing it'll take 2-3 years for you to do so. I hope you'll keep going for that long.
The Doctor sees the werewolf and instead of being scared is full of wonder. When he finished with Doctor Who, David Tennant's first major project was to play Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His portrayal of the character drew heavily on the sense of boyish enthusiasm he brought to playing the Doctor, inviting people to see the similarities between the two iconic British characters. Early in the play, Hamlet and his friend Horatio encounter his uncle's ghost. They are both on stage together as the ghost is making noises under the stage. Horatio is scared, but Hamlet reassures him: Horatio O day and night, but this is wondrous strange. Hamlet And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. But come. That moment in Hamlet played by David Tennant looked exactly like his Doctor telling one of his companions not to be scared by the unearthly!
Another brilliant reaction 😉🌹!!! This was definitely interesting and you're doing a great job of picking up on everything. Nicely done, and I'm really glad you're liking both the new Doctor and Rose. It's one of my favorite pairings. Man, I wish I could just sit and binge watch these with you. It's a series you can watch and rewatch, so just remember that when it's over ... you can get a lot of mileage out of this one.
Thank you, Steve 💜 I'm so glad you are enjoying the episodes!! I never thought I'd get to love this Doctor as quickly as I have but he's so fun and quirky. It's hard not to love him 🤭 Enjoy the rest of your weekend 💜
I think Queen Victoria was more rattled by the events than she chose to show and probably a bit afraid of The Doctor, that would effect the mandate of Torchwood. Have you noticed Torchwood is an anagram of Dr who? Yes Davids accent is Scottish he may have made it a bit thicker for the programne. I think he wanted to use his real accent for Dr Who but they didn't want him to.
Fun fact, Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who and was used as a code name before the show was announced to be returning to prevent any leaks.
I loved Torchwood series 😊
Fun fact: the name the Doctor gives at the start, 'James McCrimmon', is actually the name of one of the 2nd Doctor's companions from back in the 60s, better known as Jamie, he was Scottish too.
This show has a lot of nice little nods to previous companions now and then...
Indeed - Jamie was one of the greats, that's for sure.
If memory serves, young Jamie is the title holder for longest running Dr Who companion (113 episodes), being with Troughton for all of his tenure except the first story. Sarah Jane is next of course (86 episodes), followed by the very first companion Ian Chesterton (78 episodes).
@@gestaltdude I'm pretty sure that's right. I always think of Tegan as being near the top too, but her seasons had fewer episodes, so probably not.
Jamie's still one of my favourite companions, for me he ranks up there with Jo and Sarah Jane as one of the Doctor's best friends.
The Doctor initially says he is Dr James McCrimmon. This is a reference to one of his previous companions, who was Scottish.
I love how David Tennant uses his real Scottish accent in this episode 😆
Yes, he sounds amazing too! One of my favourite accents 💜
That wasn’t his real accent he admitted it in an Interview
@@rampz975It's closer to his actual accent than the English accent he puts on for the rest of the show.
Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much 💜
The short version of the origins of Torchwood; back in the 70s and 80s, Dr Who was popular on the BBC.
Also Pauline Collins (Queen Victoria) appeared in a story with them both
David's usual accent is a bit different from many, probably because he has spent so much time using English accents and has lived in England longer than he actually lived in Scotland. He said in this his accent was not quite his natural one, but more Glaswegian.
Tooth and claw is such an underrated gem in series 2 for me, i'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Agreed. In some ways, it's the "Unquiet Dead" of Series 2, even down to the time period :)
It was a really good one with lots of great moments 💜
That is accent inception right there 🤣 his Scottish accent is way better than Rose's... she's what I sound like trying that accent haha
RTD actually started the Torchwood references in Series 1, of course.
Ahh thank you!!
James Mccrimmon - Second Doctor's Scottish companion Jamie from 1746! Always in his hearts.❤❤
Yes, that inspired Outlander. Jamie Fraser. Jamie Mccrimmon played by Frazer Hines. Frazer got a role in the Outlander TV series.
"You have something of the Wolf about you." 👍
I have counted down the days. A week kills me but it’s so worth it. You’re an amazing reactor. ❤
Thank you so much 😭💜
This episode isn't anything remarkable, but it _is_ a lot of fun!
We are not alone, it seems! Rose is a bad influence haha!
Yes, gather round, fellow Whovians! Not long until we get to the real banger episodes from series 2! 🥳
I'm partial to 2x04 myself.
And that one "impossible" double episode later on.
Kinda weird really that they would do a werewolf story not that long (episode wise) after concluding the "Bad Wolf" story arc.
Yes!!! Exactly 😅
Fun fact James McCrimmon the fake name he used is a reference to one of the 2nd doctors companions Jamie McCrimmon.
He's terrific 😊
I know you're a bit ahead of us. Lots of great episodes upcoming and I'm having a blast watching these again
He's absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much 💜 I hope you have a great day!!
It's Wednesday afternoon here and it is Doctor Who
Day with Tooth and Claw, i really like David Tennant
he is a great actor and I like his episodes as the Doctor
i really like the location that they shot this in, have a great
rest of the week and take care my friend Juliette see you
later in the week.😊🤠👑🇭🇲🇭🇲
Ghosts are Gelf, werewolves come from beyond the stars... when are we getting the Dr. Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and X-Files crossover?
This HAS to happen. Please 😅
@@julesreacts well.. i guess, the guys from x-files, just did not get the meaning, when the crossover happened...
think about all the x-files and then think of the twist: that they just did not witness the doctor while theese strange things happened....
One of my favourites from this series. An underrated gem.
It was very well written and interesting!!
26:40
When I first watched Doctor Who about a decade ago, I got into the habit of saying "oi" for like a year.
Yes, I agree with you on that one 😊 I hope he found his peace 💜
Torchwood was also mentioned in season one.
as a side note Torchwood was the production name for Doctor Who so know one knew what it was. Its also a anagram of Doctor Who.
Some history:
Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. Old doctor who episodes and scripts were filed as torchwood to hide them from thieves.
Yeah, I have heard that! Very cool!
Just two more months until Satan’s Pit!!! (One of my favorites for Rose/Doctor content)
A (non-spoilery) point about "Torchwood." The term was coined by fans, because it's an anagram of "Doctor Who."
Your impression of Rose's accent towards the end was very good! And I don't often praise attempts at English accents. :)
Thank you! It was badly done but all in good jest 🤭
My favourite part of this episode is Rose constantly trying to get Queen Victoria to declare "we are not amused," even though in real life she supposedly never actually said it! Still, can't blame her for trying, it's a famous misconception.
And quite typical of Rose to keep on trying 🙄
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this (not a spoiler, just a fun fact), but "Torchwood" is an anagram of "Doctor Who".
Torchwood was also used as a working title (a fake name for the production to prevent undesired attention) when they were filming this season.
Really off-topic, I guess, but good LORD, I still can't get over Michelle Duncan's eyes (the lady playing Lady Isobel). They are such a vivid dark blue. All these years, and it still attracts my attention when she comes on the screen.
Agreed, also made her instantly recognisable in Andor recently.
I was 4 when this was broadcast, that wolf was nightmare fuel for ten years.
I still don't know what it means, so at least I'm blind in that way, thankfully ☺️
I love that there's a lot of re-use of actors and props and places! It really does feel like they want to still honour and respect the classic series. I love it. It does make me feel I wish I knew more, but I also feel I can watch along happily and learn as I go 💜
If you ever want to see a great werewolf transformation, Juliette, you need to watch the film An American Werewolf in London
Regarding accents, I have a fairly strong NY accent. So, I'm not surprised that you hear yourself talking like Rose
Anyway, I've been back in NY for years now and my strong NY accent is back which is probably akin to how Cro-Magnon sounded like. haha
I've not seen that one but you can't be telling me that there's better renditions of werewolves than what we've seen in Buffy? I won't believe it 😅
Torchwood started out as the codename for the show for its secrecy. It is an anagram of Doctor Who.
"I'm Doctor James Mccrimmon" Jamie... Gosh, I miss him... I'm on Fourth Doctor Era (halfway era, so no spoilers, I'm with the one that use a knfe XD)
Also, your face just lit up when the Doctor mentioned Queen Victoria. I mean, who doesn't?! Seeing historical figure right in front of you... that will be amazing~
It would have been amazing for them to see the Queen! Sometimes I get a little bit caught up in the story and forget that it's all just pretend haha
I have to agree. For a CGI effect from 2006, the werewolf still looks fantastic. Of course, it can't be compared to films like "An American Werewolf In London" or "The Howling", but it's still an amazing effect.
So.... "Torchwood." Sit down one day and just rearrange the letters until you figure it out.
Crowd Hoot? Hotrod Cow?
Dr chow too?
Loved your reactions, Jules.
This story was filled with important plot points for future episodes and yet holds up as a stand alone story, too.
Thank you so much 💜 😊
When the Doctor falsely introduces himself as "James Robert McCrimmon" with a scots accent which is David Tennant's real accent it was a reference to the Second Doctor's (Patrick Troughton) companion Jamie McCrimmon who was Scottish from the year 1746.
Ello is a british slang dropping the ''H''
from the ''Hello'' is intended to make the pronunciation sounds similar to the famous ''cockney'' accent, associated with the East of London. Today, it is only really used by people teasing their British colleagues.
The name Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who and was often used on scripts to hide the fact that they were scripts for upcoming episodes of Doctor Who.
Oh i dont know, - "Tardis...stuff"- very Doctory explanation!
One of the best werewolf movies is American Werewolf in London. The practical effects are amazing.
Spoiler idiots are absolutely not wanted 😅 I love that you feel that way too hehe!!
torchwood is an anagram for Doctor Who
I remember watching this episode, and I kept wondering why they called the Queen, "Mom." Then it took me a while to realize that "ma'am" seems to be in common usage for the Brits and is pronounced exactly like "mom" in America.
There is even more mention of torchwood im growing more curious
If you like word games you might notice Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. Thats not a spoiler, just a little meta fact.
I really cannot stop with the dropping of the H 🤣 it's becoming a problem hahaha
Thank you for this midweek treat Jules. We are amused! 😂❤
I'm very glad to hear that 😅
Did you know that "TORCHWOOD" is an anagram for "DOCTOR WHO"? In fact, during the production of Series 1 of NuWho, tapes and casting calls would often be labelled under the name "Torchwood", to throw off scoop-hungry tabloid media and, later, potential media pirates.
Another fun fact: the word "Torchwood" actually makes an appearance back in Series 1 as well. In the episode _Bad Wolf_ (the penultimate episode of Series 1), "The Torchwood Institute" is one of the answers Rose gets wrong during her stint on the Year 200,100 version of _The Weakest Link_ .
Oooh I don't know if I spotted that in The Weakest Link! I may not have been looking out for it back then 😅
If Victoria really was a werewolf, there definitely wouldn't have been so many crazies after her rule 😂
That reaction stuck with me too for this Doctor. Next episode is an absolute banger, and speaking of a Buffy crossover...
The writer of Dalek mentioned that David had talked to him back when they were both doing audios 2003/4 (never the same audio, though.)
"I'm surprised the people in the house tried to fight them" They are Scots Jules, during an attack in glasgow the public beat up the man who was on fire
No way? That's very cool 😅
it is never mentioned in the show so it's not a spoiler, but Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. It's not part of any plot - just the writers having an in-joke with it's name.
26:48 Rose will also change a "th" to an "f," like saying "fanks" for "thanks."
Yes!! I've noticed that. It's cute! I don't think I will take on board that into my speech, but 'oo knows 😜
Just a little clarification. It's not called a Season but a Series. That's how DW Fans differentiate between the New and the Classic show. Classic Who actually called it Seasons.
Oh thank you! I have to apologise in advance, as I will most likely keep getting it wrong 🤣
@@julesreacts No problem. It's fun to see newcomers finding their way into the show. Also a little fun fact while we're at it, try to switch the letters of the word Torchwood around and maybe you find a hidden meaning.
Yes, Series 1 is actually Season 27, Series 2 is actually Season 28, and so on.......
😉 (It is kind of funny that you called this episode a Buffy crossover, when the next episode actually has a Buffy actor in it.)
This is a really fun and interesting episode, yet very underrated.
Sir Doctor of Tardis is one of my favorite phrases EVER 🙂
I'm really starting to look forward to these reactions!
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you!
David McDonald? I wonder why he changed his name! I never knew that!
Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who 😲
I know watching Torchwood isn’t necessary to enjoy the show, so you can if you want and it will add enjoyment, but its not required. I didn’t watch it and I never felt very lost myself.
I watched tw after watching all of dw and it didn't feel like I was really missing much context
Yeah, I'm still unsure to be honest! I think it might be something I watch down the track, perhaps even when I've caught up with all the New Who episodes. I just don't like the idea of having a 3 month break away from Who as we watch Torchwood.
@@julesreactsTorchwood is good, but fair warning: the last 2 seasons get very dark.
"Oh my god they're werewolves 🐺"🤣
The Wolf was worked on by the same people who did the werewolf in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban, that’s why it looks so damn good😃
Oooh wow! Very fancy!!
_"The special effects in Doctor Who seem to be.... of better quality?"_ Someday, treat yourself to Classic Who. 😀 Just for the contrast.
FYI, Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who :)
Awesome video as always! i have to say your, 'Ope it goes away yeah.' sounded pretty bang on to me! so i ope it stays 😜
It's really not going away 🤣 And the worst part? Me 'ole family are doin' it now!
@@julesreacts 🤣🤣🤣 After a Tennet who rewatch i tend to enter places saying 'Oh yes" as he tends to do but keep my hs' Dr Who just affects people that way i guess 🤣 Hope you have a good rest of your week!
I think this one is overlooked and underrated
first of all. buffy is older than these episodes of doctor who. buffy is a lot lot newer than the series as a whole. 1963 the first ep aired. 2nd of all i find it interesting when who's effects are praised. i mean some of the monsters are legendary for being ridiculously campy.
I just like to enjoy the show, campy effects or not 😸
Not a lot of people like this episode but I really enjoy rewatching this one. It’s an underrated gem
There's a few good moments in this one, including the impressive special effects ☺️
2 or 3 years 😅 oh boy! I can watch 4 series per year, if I do the maths correctly. You must be wanting to see a series close to the current one?
The Doctor sees the werewolf and instead of being scared is full of wonder.
When he finished with Doctor Who, David Tennant's first major project was to play Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His portrayal of the character drew heavily on the sense of boyish enthusiasm he brought to playing the Doctor, inviting people to see the similarities between the two iconic British characters.
Early in the play, Hamlet and his friend Horatio encounter his uncle's ghost. They are both on stage together as the ghost is making noises under the stage. Horatio is scared, but Hamlet reassures him:
Horatio
O day and night, but this is wondrous strange.
Hamlet
And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. But come.
That moment in Hamlet played by David Tennant looked exactly like his Doctor telling one of his companions not to be scared by the unearthly!
Oh that's beautiful 💜 thank you!
It's hard not to love him 🤭
Enjoy the rest of your weekend 💜
David Tennat was born to be the Dr. He was the best that I’ve seen but I only seen a couple episodes of the 12th Dr
He's amazing!!
I don't know if you have been told already but Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor who
The doctor introduces himself as james mccrimmon i. Reference to 2nd doctor companion jamie mccrimmon
Fun fact, rearrange the letters of Torchwood and you get Doctor Who ;)
I think Queen Victoria was more rattled by the events than she chose to show and probably a bit afraid of The Doctor, that would effect the mandate of Torchwood. Have you noticed Torchwood is an anagram of Dr who?
Yes Davids accent is Scottish he may have made it a bit thicker for the programne.
I think he wanted to use his real accent for Dr Who but they didn't want him to.
