Ignoring everything is easier thank thinking about things you need to do, which start to accumulate because you keep leaving them until the last moment (not on purpose) This happens to me all the time, and I'll just start watching youtube videos, or Netflix, and then start sleeping bad, and having anxiety attacks because of the stress of those things. So you're not alone there.

I remember in school realizing that for me, I used "self care" as an excuse to procrastinate, when real self care meant forcing myself to do homework. That took care of my mental health WAY more than my go to excuse of "taking a quick break to take care of myself," which usually meant playing video games in a state of panic while I tried to not think about how much homework I had to do.

For positive association: play some relaxing music or a long ambience video in the background while you study. I personally love listening to the Harry Potter sound track while I do my homework (remember that the music you pick should probably not have any words). You can also try watching some youtube immediately after you get some studying done to reward yourself. I sometimes like to dress up in fancy clothes when I need to do something that I've been procrastinating on because it makes the experience new and also a little more interesting.

    • @monkiram

Then at the half hour point I've read 3 pages and I'm like okay I'll get a reward this time and then the stress of not getting through my goal makes me feel demotivated and not want to finish the task and I just give up on the entire endeavour and watch RUclips videos for the rest of the day and then fast forward 3 months to my exam and I'm like I had all semester, what have I done?!

@@lindseysquire8417 I also find it far too easy go just give myself the promised reward, regardless of getting the task done. What works for me is to pair the pleasant thing, i.e. the reward, with the unpleasant task. Watching a RUclips video while I do the dishes. Sitting down with a nice cup of coffee or tea, and a couple of cookies, while I do the reading or writing I'm supposed to do. Depending on the task, it can be hard to figure out what to pair with it - can't drink a cup of coffee while pushing a lawnmower, for example, or concentrate on a video ... but a loud radio (if it won't cause problems with your neighbours) might work!

Hey I just wanted to say thank you. I've been binging your videos for the past couple days. I live in an area where people still argue whether ADHD is a real thing or not. I found myself crying during a few of your videos because I finally heard someone describing the things I go through on a regular basis as if I was saying them to someone. Knowing that there are other people out there like me is different than hearing someone talk about a similar perspective. Thank you so much!

I have noticed and love the way you edit your videos and how they cater perfectly to people with ADHD because your video clips usually dont last more than 5-6 sec at max to keep your viewers attention. Well done!

I always beat myself up for being lazy, I find it incredibly difficult to get things done early and never able to stick to a routine. However, if there is anything urgent that needs to be done, I can work really hard. It's like you said, addicted to an adrenaline rush to get things done.
It can really take a toll on your confidence when you feel like you are unable to adapt the way most other people do. I have two kids and I constantly feel like I am failing them with my inability to focus on one thing. Late or rushed lunches, unsigned memos, often times late for school, burned dinners, half made baby blankets and scarfs, missed deadlines to sign up for activities, etc. I can be a fun mom, and we can laugh at my mess ups, however, I am unable to be an example of routine and therefore setting them up to struggle through adulthood themselves.
People already judge mother's enough, it is oftentimes tough being judged for something I can't control. Working in rush mode or being unorganized.

So I was on meds in school for ADHD and I thought that maybe it was just some kind of "Put her in a bubble she is ADHD and drug her" I have been watching these videos tonight and I am having a lot of what you call "Come to Jesus moments" its like everything she is saying is my life. Like I haven't done the dishes and even though I put it on my list of 20 things that need to be done today...it like the 20 other things don't get done. Its not procrastination either its like there is to much to do so I just cant do it......I dunno.

I feel the same way, ab having many things to do and actually doing NONE of it.. I just start feeling so so bad, unmotivated, just empty and cant even think ab doing it. My body becomes rlly heavy and I’m numb. I’m not diagnosed with ADHD but I’d like to test for it bc I’m relating to many videos I’ve watched.. But anyway I have an advice, smt rlly obvious but we often forget it - don’t quit. I try telling it to myself every day. Hope that helps to anyone with the same problem :)

Just discovering this channel. I was seeking help since our son has been diagnosed w/ ADHD-C. I started trying to learn more about it since I was diagnosed 10 years ago (at the tender age of 40) but did not really do much research to understand what was happening. These videos have been invaluable, extremely helpful and very emotional as I learn why my childhood and adulthood have been so hard. My first marriage was destroyed for, among other things, us not knowing how to work with ADHD-C. Anyway, THIS video and the Dopamenu video are the first where I decided to implement the suggestions. That was yesterday. Today was the first test. Our blog to keep friends/family updated is something I enjoy but procrastinate posts to the point that many are just not relevant by the time I finish.
"Start Badly" - I did that today. Turns out the bad start was not so bad that I had to let my perfectionism take control. I started out badly on purpose and the post was completed and published within 20 minutes.
We love this channel...even though it has created an emotional mess in me for the last week. But, you have helped me already with our son. And with me...I am seeking a therapist to again explore medication AND to help deal with this flood of memories, realizations and emotions.
This channel, how it is presented, the information in it and the compassion has made me feel "supported" like a support group. I have never experienced this level of "you are not alone" from any previous support group. I don't want to be dramatic, but this channel has given me life and hope. And optimism that I have a chance to not mess up dealing with this the way my parents unknowingly did. Thank you.

So as a example of hyper focus, i’ve binge watched this videos, they’re very helpful and make me feel less alone. In one video you mentioned “not paying your bills, not because you don’t have the money, just because you’re anxiously putting it off”, then in this video that’s kinda the main focus of my procrastination is debt and financial stuff, things that require waiting on the phone, chasing down the right phone number to get things done or really just being terrified about actually paying the bills.

Something I've found that can really help is to never give yourself the CHANCE to procrastinate. My most successful semester was set up so I could go straight from class to a nearby room where I'd study the next day's material for a few hours. I'd get a brief break as I talked to people/etc after the class was over, to rest my brain, and then I'd go study.
Same goes for doing things you want to do. If you sit down and open up youtube it's really hard to stop(case in point, this post), but if you just open up your word document or whatever FIRST, you'll find it easiest to keep going on it. And if you need a break, don't do it on your computer! Get up and go outside or make a cup of coffee or ANYTHING that doesn't break your workflow in that particular spot! Sooner or later you'll HAVE to come back to your PC, and then you're already started and wow, it's a lot easier to slide right back into what you were doing!

I got diagnosed this week with ADHD at 21 years old so I'm watching videos and doing more research and I have to say I have never related more to a video oh my god it's kind of amazing to see some of my struggles so clearly explained when I had such a hard time thinking "why am I like this?" and getting so frustrated with myself because I didn't understand why I did things that made me feel worse and not 'just' being able to do it. Also interestingly I have learned a lot of the tips over time before I was diagnosed and it has been helpful, but to be able to specifically name it and find solutions has been really nice

I was diagnosed with ADHD seven years ago, and it was only when I discovered your channel in the last few months that I've realized that nearly every mental struggle I've had in my life has been related to my ADHD. It doesn't help that I was labeled as gifted in my school system about the same year (being labeled as gifted in school can be harmful to anyone, but especially to ADHD brains). I spent seven years thinking my problems with things like procrastination were because I was defective. Finding your channel was like a miracle. You've helped me so much, Jessica. This is why I want to go into the field of children's therapy: as a kid, I despised therapy. I now know that I am a very introverted person, and that I may even have social anxiety. I didn't know how to express that, though, and due to my anger management issues, I would end up screaming and having meltdowns, which only reinforced the need for therapy in the eyes of the adults in my life (I was going for anger management).

It's just unreal how much this women speaks my life into these videos . I would say one of the hardest issues for adhders is anyone in their life that doesn't have it understanding or even wanting to understand anything about the condition . I'm 32 I turn 33 in a couple months and I have learned more from watching these videos or I guess I would say I have gotten so many confirmations about everything I though about adhd from 32 years experience with it . Absolutely no one in my life even the people I know that have it ,have the knowledge they should have about this topic , they are so oblivious to how truly debilitating it can be and how many ways it can effect your life . I wish I could just force the knowledge into my loved ones heads so they could slightly understand what it's like being inside my head .

The trick I have found to never be later is instead of setting the time for myself to leave the home, setting myself an alarm to when I need to start getting prepared to leave (usually 15 minutes before the time I think I would need to leave at!) Which brings me to fool myself into urgency of leaving while I still have time to prepare, maybe put on makeup or make myself some tea for the road XD Well, hope that helps somebody else!

Ooh! I have done this with clocks in the house. I used to set all of my clocks fast, but like at random amounts of time like seven or twelve minutes fast, no orderly five or ten minutes. And all clocks were set differently so I never actually knew what time it was. That way when I looked at a clock I'd get stressed which would motivate me to hurry and actually leave. My husband eventually ended this practice, because it is kind of insane and annoying for the people who have to live with me, but it did actually work. For a good long while I was never late.
Now I am late all the time because all of the clocks in the house read the correct time : ( , except in my car where the time is still fast by who knows how much, because my car is my kingdom and my husband's correct time has no power here.

This was me in grade school and high school. I ALWAYS waited until the last minute to get started on a project, and I never felt the need to really study for a test. The worst part about it is that I NEVER got anything lower than an A on those projects (and usually never a thing worse than a B on tests), so I never really had to deal with the negative consequences of procrastination other than the stress, and so I just kept on doing the same old song and dance.
My first semester in college kicked my ass and made me realize that I actually had to learn better habits. I'm slowly getting better at starting projects further in advance, and breaking them up into smaller tasks really helped.

I work from my car, at the park, on a swinging hammock chair, at an outside desk, in an Italian restaurant - but never at my desk which I bought just for work :). Anxiety as motivation is absolutely what I use to get things done and I didn't think I could use anything else besides stress as a motivator. I will try the method of starting a bit earlier. Chunking up the tasks doesn't seem to work for me - since it's not the actual task but starting the task that seems to be the problem. Talk to a guidance counselor, disability officer, and/or your parents about getting tested. Be persistent and they will eventually give in. It took me 19 years to get diagnosed and I wish I had gotten it sooner so I would have had time to develop strategies to combat it. The earlier you can get diagnosed the better.

No matter what you say there is a chance it will sound like a bunch of excuses. But i would say something along the lines of: (person you are addressing) i've been struggling as of late with paying attention, getting work done, ect. I suspect i may have ADHD and i would like to get tested so if it is the case i can develop the tools i need in order to succeed. I know you may not like the idea but getting tested will be beneficial in the long run and would really help put my mind at ease.

Watching this video again five years later, this advice is again incredibly helpful! I've creeped back into those old procrastination/anxiety habits and it's good to remind myself that there are words for it, and steps I can take to improve the issue.

One day I was feeling gross and really needed a bath, so I said to myself that I would only take a bath after I was done with my work. I finished a day of tasks in 3 hours. hahahahahahaha I do these kind of things..

I love watching (and re-watching) Glee and Star Trek and rehearsing for whatever show I'm in. During the school year, I'm given a lot of homework. #collegelife So, after I get one subject done I will reward myself either with 1 episode of Glee/Star Trek or 30 mins of self rehearsal time! ;)
      Hope that helped!

I love your videos! Thank you for all this amazing info. I’m not sure that I have or don’t have ADHD but I have forms of what you speak of in every video. I love knowing that you’ve created a safe place to listen in and relate to what I’ve been dealing with all my life. Thanks again!!!😊❤️
