- Eddie Trunk's 40th Anniversary party at the House of Blues on December 11th 2023 in Las Vegas! Michael Anthony with Mike Portnoy on drums with Brent Woods on guitar & then joining in is Richtie Kotzen!
Michael Anthony is a counterbalance to the giant egos at VH. He's a beautiful human being 😊
Shut up!😅
He's such a damn good bass player, he doesn't get the credit that he deserves...but he got all the aggravation from Eddie, saying that Mike wasn't a good bass player and saying he taught Mike what to play..I don't think that was very nice.. obviously, Mikey is one hell of a bass player, truly one of the greatest, and one of my personal favorites
A think Eddie was a cool and good guy but King Alcohol destroys the soul, the body and the mind. It’s a demonic corrosion. May he rest in peace.
Sammy said that Mike was the only guy in the band who never caused any problems
@@ericanderson7346 I totally believe that... Mikey is a solid dudeand a GREAT bass player..if I put headphones on and listen to his playing, the guy is just sooo f'n good..he inspired me to pick up the bass
Michael Anthony = pure joy. What a legend.
age 69 :D
Could NOT agree more
A true gentleman he put up with more then we'll ever know.
@@marlinshanklin-ww7em you put it wisely what a hero
I’m guessing the only Sane member of VH back in the day. He played some awesome Bass!
Wow, Mikey can still sing those high range harmonies 45 years later 💕
Yeah and DLR struggles to do what he does now
His voice was well rested all those years
the vocals that carried the band on the road while DLR was prancing like drunk jackass
He’s a legend
@@jefflevesque5316 It's funny but you can actually hear the "real Van Halen" here, can't you!
Michael...always a team player. Never a glory hog. But could easily front his own band. First class all the way.
How could he be ??? The most easily replaced member of a Super-Band Trio !!!
@@rocknfan100 Actually, Alex was would have been far easier replaced than Michael.
Drummers are dime a dozen.
That's Funny cuz ALEX was NEVER REPLACED !@@ruserious9577
I corrected it for the easily-distracted.@@rocknfan100
"Alex Van Halen's drumming has profoundly shaped the landscape of modern music and performance. His distinctive style, rhythmic innovation and iconic drum sound are deeply embedded in the DNA of the music we enjoy today"... from Alex's 2023 induction into Moder Drummer's Hall of Fame. Inspired by the techniques of John Bonham, Keith Moon & Ginger Baker, Alex has influenced other Great Drummers such as Jimmy Degrasso, Josh Freese etc. His unique, straight-ahead assault style and exceptional timing have been a Massive part of the Van Halen's Success !!!! @ruserious9577 @@ruserious9577
The most underrated bass player in rock-n-roll! And those harmonies...Awesome! Always loved that guy!
Another “underrated” comment on RUclips. 🙄
Here we go. “Underrated”. Do you know anything about music?
He’s not underrated! Well respected and loved!!!
If anything at this point he's overrated
Underrated is overstated by the ex spurts these days.
Michael Anthony always the koolest VH. What a trip to be a stable dude among that tornado of egos.
And the band badly mistreated the guy that everyone agrees is the nicest rock star you'll ever meet! Before the recording of 1984, EVH demanded that Michael not get any credit or royalties from then on, because as EVH said, he (Mike) contributes nothing to the song writing process, which was true, but neither did Alex, but his last name happened to be Van Halen...lol Mind you all 4 members of the band were in the same room while all this transpired! EVH then began to attack Michael's bass playing saying that he (EVH) had to write the bass solos & then teach Michael the solo, again true, but just brutal. Before this "meeting" EVH had gotten Dave to agree to all this & of course Alex did anything his brother told him to do. They already had the paper work drawn up & ready for Michael to sign, & just for good measure, if Michael wouldn't sign, they told him they would kick him out of VH & find another bass player. Those who say Michael was an integral part of the VH sound, I agree 1000% !!! But think about it, Michael was later kicked out of VH to make room for Wolfgang...I love Wolfgang, but Michael's back up vocals just did something special for their songs.
Haha tornado of egos. 😂 Well said
Tornado of Egos...sounds like every band I've ever been in too. I agree with Gary, that's a nice turn of phrase.
@@oceanlives4915 Alex van Halen can't even play a cover properly. Top 5 my ass not even top100
There really was only one ego - Dave. Eddie and Alex ? Where? When? If you're the GOAT of guitar and simply have confidence in yourself and humble, that's no ego.
Eddie is getting his tribute every time Michael Anthony plays VH songs live.
Michael Anthony did ALL the amazing high harmonies. He was the backbone. Love his joy!
Too bad Van Halen couldn’t find the Grace to treat each other well? Rock and Roll?
Michael Anthony is such a legend! 🤘🏻
Great guitar work Mike is as good as ever..
Long live the mighty VAN HALEN
damn Michael Anthony can still sing!!
Every day that goes by I love and appreciate Michael Anthony more and more. There is nothing he can't do, and no one kinder or more humble.
Michael Anthony. The voice of reason in VH.. not only..
Talent and musical skill .. a huge portion of the legacy.. Thank you, Michael.
Thanks Michael, you are very appreciated always 😊
I love Michaels voice.. great job guys !
Everything I've watched from Eddie's 40th has just been fun! It's all been great!
Michael Anthony f..k yeah 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Michael Anthony unsung hero!
His vocals blew me away when I saw him live and he sang lead. Plus he's a great guy.
That was so fun to watch. Thanks for sharing
Michael Anthony is supremely talented and was the lifeblood of Van Halen. He's the only one who's still rocking!
This is brilliant 👏 The music needs to be kept alive and doing it like this is fine by me! ❤ Well done Mikey and everyone else involved 👊
Brent Wood is always awesome playing!
Very underrated guitar player!
His work on the first Wildside record is so good!
Glad to see this man is still kicking azz and doing his thing.
Brent Woods rocks…. Wicked guitarist that played most of the show…. Very underrated guy…. Thanks for the video…. Rock on.
Thanks, was wondering who the guitarist was, he did a great job here
@@ewm335 He is a solid guitar player! I have seen him playing with
Sebastian Bach.
I was wondering if Ritchie Kotzen had some plastic surgery done and started using a pick, lol.
@@stuartkinzel8195 I don’t watch to much on Ritchie… I notice he didn’t use a pic… is that normal for him?
@@Jimmyd_Rocktalk Yes. I don't remember when he stopped using a pick but I don't really hear a difference in attack. I was a bit surprised when I found out.
The world needed that..and more thanks Mike.EVH..forever.
I appreciate an aging rock star that comes out in jeans and a t-shirt. Mike always seemed like the guy you would like to hang out with.
It's funny that a band named after two of its members, is not the same band without Michael Anthony. It's not Van Halen without him.
I think Mikey was the backbone of the VH sound. I know about Eddie. But real constant that was ever-present from the beginning right through the Sammy years was Michael's vocals. You could listen to that first album with Sammy and hear Mikey sing and say - WOW this is Van Halen!!
Finally Mikey's time to shine. Has been a gentleman since day 1. Cool hat tip to Eddie.
Out of the surviving members, he’s definitely living his best life & having fun. Just like anyone that takes the high road should.
5:49 made me tear up.
It's _so_ wonderful to hear musicans whose heyday was yesteryear, but play with genuine passion and especially, ENERGY later in their career. This performance is one of those rare moment where a modern rendition is every bit as good as a vintage one.
I never knew that VH could've made it as trio!
Right on! Thanks!
Michael Anthony. The glue that bound the Van Halen book, IMHO. Still hitting those high notes at sixty freaking nine... And thumping the hell out of that bass.
This is so killer awesome 🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🎸Micheal Anthony you are insane….supa cool n love your singing!!!🎸👍🎸
I can’t imagine being there . A night of a lifetime 🎼
He is a very underrated musician, he slays it!!
Un auténtico y super Rock Star el gran Michael......... gracias por tantos momentos geniales con Van Halen 😊
Awesome 👍👍 cool to see Ritchie version
Super impressive. Very Happy to see him performing these songs soooo good! I still remember how I was blown away hearing the Bass intro of Running with the Devil when the song was released.... Michael Anthony still rules big times! Cheers from Germany
the first guy is Brent Woods, which was/is the lead guitarist of Wildside. Criminally underrated
Was also Vince Neil’s touring guitarist when he first went solo. Steve Stevens bailed and Brent took over.
Thank you. Didn’t recognise him.
Thanks man, I was looking through all the comments to see who he is, wicked player !
Thanks. I was wondering who that was. My first thought was "that's not Ritchie Kotzen!"
He seemed way more comfortable than Ritchie. I know it sounds like I’m dissing him but I’m not, great player, but this guy was just f’n great! Thanks for pointing him out, this guy needs more shout outs!! Have a great holiday everyone & God Bless!!
Thank you so much for sharing this historic video. I’m so happy all of these guys are still active, awesome!
Portnoy back in Dream Theater and Michael Anthony going out on tour with Sammy Hagar for the Van Halen Tribute Tour!
Thanks for posting this Melvin..Mike is awesome,I saw both bands with Dave and Sammy..Mike was stellar both shows. Very underrated singer,he wails, and is on key.😊
That was effin RAD!😊
Kotzen & the other guy ROCKED IT!
Thanks!
Michael Anthony didnt have a big enough ego for VH. He is a rock monster and us pure joy when on stage! Ritchie is one of the best!
That isn’t Richie Kotzen on guitar - who is it?
@@AD-ui2pzBrent Woods on the Les Paul

Mike is so awesome. Team player. Humble. Highly skilled bass player and vocalist. And so cool to see him having so much fun.
Respect" from Dallas Texas" Rock On,....baby ya!
M.A. got his moral revenge against all the bad words from the VH camp during all these years, like when EVH said he wasn't able to play or write his basslines,or when he said he could sing better than Michael. On top of that, they cut his earnings from the band, treated him like the last bass player on earth and replaced him with a 14 years old boy.Mike is such a gentleman, never a bad word from him, just joy and respect
& mad skills. It's an unnecessary & huge black mark against EVH's legacy that he talked so much S# about MA, when MA was such a vital piece of the VH puzzle.
That was during evh crackhead days. But still sucks
That 14 yr old boy turned out to be 100 times the musician Michael, Sammy or Alex are or were.
@@AlexM-uo9gk - What utter bollocks, talented for sure, 0% charisma/stage presence compared to those 3 legends/completely unique artists in their genre..
@@AlexM-uo9gk Wow, don't post drunk bro
I saw VH in 1979 and what amazed me the most was that it was Mikey doing the high screams in Runnin with the Devil
Absolutely insane range and the dude’s in his 70’s 🔥
Just shy of 70, he's 69
I'm a huge fan of the mighty VH from the DLR era,not Sammy, not Gary... I've always LOVED Mikey, such a great force behind the band! A tremendously underrated musician.. he's always been my favorite bass player.
..GOD BLESS YOU,MIKEY...you helped me get through high school, and your music and your driving energy
still is with me to this very day... LOVE YOU,BRO
Funny you word it that way since Eddie wrote everything... I guess VH was less "mighty" with Ed writing for Sammy and Gary??
@@donaldcummings8407yes absolutely, they never would of existed without Dave.
@@donaldcummings8407 no,I didn't mean it that way...I just don't think that Sammy or Gary were the right fit for van Halen, but it ultimately comes down to Eddie's decision to put them there.sammy was better in my opinion on his own...just listen to Montrose.those guys were solid.i don't like everything Sam did as a solo artist, and I have nothing against him.,maybe it WAS Eddie all along because he brought those guys into the band.after DLR,the music got too watered down for me, that's all...imagine if ed got who he originally was going after for DLRs replacement..patty Smyth from scandal...I really would have hated it.but in my opinion, next to Hendrix,Eddie was the greatest.
Awesome lineup of talent and the results speak for themselves.. 🎸 ✌️♥️♥️♥️
Michael Anthony: "SUNG HERO"!!!
Mikey still has it after all these years. Dave can’t say the same lol!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Just f-in awesome.
Everybody wants some- Mikey!!
I would pay good money to see Mikey on a full VH tribute concert (him singing and playing the bass of course)
Love Mike Antony, his singing & playing is incredible. How bout Mike Portnoy? He fucking killed it too. It demonstrates how much of a rhythm there was in VH, & how much Mike locked in.
Mikey is the guy everyone wishes was in their band. He's a goddamn gem
What they thought was the weakest link was always the diamond in the rough!
Truth
Warming up for what will be an awesome summer tour 🤟
Michael was never a virtuoso bassist, as Eddie or Alex were on their chosen instruments, but he was the most solid and steady person in that group, period. I would also argue that he is the most 100% rock and roll guy in all of rock and roll since 1978, he just loves it and it's super obvious. Holding his chops up for technical comparison to those of Eddie (or any bassist from any rock act) is an act of idiocy. Mike is just a rock fkn solid bassist and vocalist, he instantly lays down the groove and does the job like a pitbull attacking a squeak toy with a treat inside of it every fkn time. You simply can't not like the guy, he oozes the vibe of Van Halen, it's not an act, it's his personality, how he was when he came into the world and almost certainly how he will be when he goes out of it. We all need to celebrate the straight up bomb factor dudes and dudettes more.
well said!
As a bassist, let me say. I can play geddy, JPJ, or flea easier than I can Mike. Mike followed that swing, ever so subtle, played with drums (double bass or fills) and singing, all while making it seem simple. That’s the real magic. Mike made it look easy, but it wasn’t. You can listen to Mike during the guitar solo of Girl Gone Bad & realize, he coun go blow to blow with Ed.
Awesome! Michael's vocals and backing vocals held VH together during drunk DLR shows!
I saw DLR van Halen many years ago back in the hartford civic center in Connecticut and Roth was so freakin drunk off his ass,he couldn't even sing..Mikey filled in on vocals for two songs while they were trying to sober Dave up.. Mikey was a very versatile guy for vh,very underrated and underappreciated, especially by Eddie
seen Van Halen a few times in the early 80's and Roth was so drunk he forgot words, etc..I will prolly get crap for saying this however I always thought DLR's vocals were great in the studio but not so good live. Great showman though.
@Randy-ul5hy don't worry,man...Roth did the same thing when i saw them back then,too..thank God I really wasn't there to see dave...it was Eddie I was there to see
Great Job Michael!!!!!!
WOW, the voice of VH!!!!!
Definitely need an album and tour from this group!
Watching these other terrific guitarist play the Van Halen tunes, just reminds us of how phenomenal EVH was.
I still remember when I was 15 years old and we ran to the shopping mall and my friend said you have to hear this band. He pulled out the Van Halen first album from the record bin, and we took it home, he dropped the needle and my life was never the same. Thank you Michael Anthony for making my teenage rock and roll years awesome.
M.A. definitely holding justice and doing the V.H. camp proud. That was awesome ❤️❤️
Michael Anthony - What' a nice guy !! And boy can be sing!!!!🥰
Goosebumps when Mikey says ..."this one is for you Eddy..."
Kotzen fucking shredding every bit as good as Eddie🙌
Michael Anthony still shreds on the bass and vocals. Like the old days, very cool. 🤘
Was it not EVH who said MA cannot play bass and he had to teach him the parts? Please, this guy is a legend, and a true humble Rock Star.
Such a monster musician with absolute grace and ease.
Awesome! Seeing Richie Kotzen next year in Hamburg, supporting Extreme!
thank you for share with us
Michael is still rocking like hell! 👍🏻🙏🏻
I’m a Van Halen freak and I have never seen this till now. So good. I love Michael Anthony he was an Intral part of the Van Halen sound.
Michael should have his own damn band...anyone worth their salt, would play with this guy!!!! Just look on stage!
Michael Anthony is a class act, fantastic bass player and vocalist! Plus he still has the pipes as evidenced here!
Shoulda had Michael singing the whole time. He sounds good. Keep Ed alive bro. Good stuff right here.
Thank you!!!! I love Richie!
They sound phenomenal
The mix is perfect
Michael Anthony is one hell of a musician. Often overlooked for his skill on the base and vocals.
With all the infighting and turmoil that went on in VH and all the Sammy vs DLR stuff, I’ve never heard anyone say a bad thing about Mike. Says a lot about what kind of a guy he is.
Michael Anthony.... aging like FINE wine. What a GOAT!!!
He’s still got the pipes 👍👍👍
Single handedly keeping VH top of mind! Go mike
Played this song as a cover band for uears. A fave of mine. Mikey crushes it.
Brent Woods on guitar
Michael Anthony sings great!
Mikey holding it down in Vegas! Great to see this!
Michael Anthony sounds so much better than David Lee Roth nowadays. Better fit on the guitar(s) than Satriani too.
It't because he knows how to sing, and David don't.
Dave is a creep I saw him about 15 years ago at a gig he was grabbing a woman in the audience close to the stage I couldn't believe he was getting away with sexual assault right there. I left the show in disgust. I remember seeing them in 1984 and someone threw an A cup bra onstage and Dave picked it up and said " Hey Ed I didn't know Valerie was here tonight."
The secret weapon of VH. Damn he sounds great alone.
Love mike the only sane one in the bunch….but reminds how unique DLR voice was….
Huge respect to MA. He doesn't sling mud, sells his hot sauce and absolutely Rocks it.
..
singer ++++ bass++++ mentality++++ super guy
Miss Ed every day this band was my youth
By far the best singer in Roth era Van Halen
