This man is the single most influential person of my teenage life. His literature is the work of a true teenager. The Absolutley True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is hands down my favorite book. Thank you Sherman Alexie, you are my hero.
For all of the lazy ones, the similarities were "One way Alexie's own life and the life of his main character are similar can be seen in the conditions of their births. Both are born with hydrocephalus. They both got bullied. They both left the rez. They both got beat up when playing sports, but they both persevered and made sure that they were still in it. "
My friend sent me Diary of a Part-Time Indian. What a great story. I felt like you were sitting in the room talking to me. Don`t think this book is enjoyed by teens only. My friend and I are both in our 60s. Thanks Sherman.
You're so right. I read it a couple weeks ago and I turned 60 last July. It's a great book. I've read several Sherman Alexie books and Diary of a Part-Time Indian is easily my favorite.
I love it, to listen to Sherman Alexie. We are working on tasks for this book (I am from germany). I like Sherman Alexie's book "The absolutely true diary...",what we have just read in school. It's great that he is so open minded. You can learn a lot from him.
I'm sure you're out of the class already or at least the assignment has passes...but the book doesn't take long to read, you should think about doing so. :)
basically, he grew up on a rez and a lot of people were alcohol addicts and 8 of his family members died in like 1 year. he had the same brain thing as in the book, minus the speech impediments.
He is a great inspiration to me. I really admire his humor, and his writing is irresistible. I've just finished The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian about two weeks ago, and it is one of the best books I've ever read.
Powerful book for those of us walking in the White world, attending White Universities and trying to figure out where we go from here. Actually, this book is a powerful book for everyone.
Ong. What did you put for the differences and "What are some of the things that we learn about Sherman Alexie’s life that were not explored in his novel?"
Reading Ten Little Indians for a college class and I absolutely adore Sherman Alexie. I cannot believe I am just now reading one of his books or just hearing of him.
I've read, and I've listened to, at least two of Sherman Alexie's books. I've read, and enjoyed *"War Dances,"* and I've read, listened to, and enjoyed *"Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian."*
It's funny he says that older people won't message him saying he changed their life... I am not ancient but I'm 27 and his Part-time Indian changed my life. Amazing!
At 72, it would be hard to say that Alexie changed my life simply because I have only just read his collection of short stories titled The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. And I was never an alcoholic or a violent person. That said, Alexie is indeed a writer of genius.
I read a short story by Sherman Alexie in my private preparatory college high school...now years later I'm reading his other books...I wish he could open the possibility of re-writing history which would include Native Americans/American Indians in U.S. history books...!
I live in Spokane and I have a friend that goes to Reardan. We are reading True Diary of a Part Time Indian in school now and its really interesting/sometimes sad to learn about the things that go on outside of those of us who are more privileged (i go to a private school.)
Ong. What did you put for the differences and "What are some of the things that we learn about Sherman Alexie’s life that were not explored in his novel?"
Great book I decided to read it after Empire of a Summer Moon. I looked for another Goodreads Indian book and came across Sherman Alexie what a great book. I love the story.
Was a great book, the only reason why I read it is because I actually go to the real reardan highschool were this book takes place. Most of the stuff about the school and the town that is said in the book is true, but we are soon changing the indian mascot due to some new laws.
i am reading this book too i really like it i never like reading or readings books like this but this boook is amazingg :) and you can read that book at your school when there is swearing in it ?thats cool
