Sherman Alexie on Living Outside Borders

  • Born on a Native American reservation, Sherman Alexie has been navigating the cultural boundaries of American culture in lauded poetry, novels, short stories, screenplays, even stand-up comedy for over two decades. Alexie joins Bill to share his irreverent perspective on contemporary American life, and discuss the challenges of living in two different cultures at the same time, especially when one has so much dominance over the other

    Alexie is definitely my favorite author. I am so glad my 2nd semester of college when my professor made us read the lone ranger and tonto fistfight in heaven. Alexie is the most i say what i mean and mean what i say kinda guy. He has shown me that literature is more than what i perceived it to be. I relate to him and his childhood alot besides the Indian part but it is so similar. I love how hes so open with his feelings he is someone i want to meet in my lifetime for sure.

    I love this guy. I am so glad I finally read his work. I wonder if the way he looks at the cello is a poet thing...I feel that way when I watch musicians play, regardless of the instrument. I've written about that myself. Hmmm...

    I couldn't agree with Mr. Alexie more that we are tribal, and even more so after 9/11 and in light of recent political happenings. However, I definitely relate with his comment of being a "tribe of one". I think that is reflected in his poem about Facebook and social media as well as the lack of interaction going on between people in general. I was very interested to learn that though Native Americans tend to vote for Democrat representatives, their day to day lives are more conservative. I always envisioned that it was more of a socialist structure, where all had input and worked for the benefit of the tribe. I do agree that it would be a good step to create a memorial similar to the Jewish Holocaust Memorial for the Native American people. Like I have seen in the comments below and read other places, it is most likely too late for an apology but a heart felt acknowledgement of the wrongs committed is long over due.

    I am Potawatomi and Aztec please America don't apologize because in 1667 my people only had 4000 people and all spoke our native tongue today we have 48,000 people and less than 1,300 speak or language. We as Natives are letting our culture die, we are not all mentally ill suffering from bipolar disorder, and not all of us are victims. those who stay as victims will never grow and keep stirring the pity pot i will not die as that poor native girl i will die as a strong woman. Race is to important now days when most of us natives are lovers, want to spread our culture, and push forward with our neighbors. then you have Sherman Alexie but Sherman i will keep you in my thoughts and when you are saying i am angry with racism all i have heard from your lips are all about white this and that may Chibiabos guard and guide you soul in this life and the next

      What did you find the most fascinating views and what were disagreable ideas, M.C.V. Egan? I found that his views of Lincoln were the most fascinating. HIs idea of God was disagreable to me (I am out of tune with those as well.). Few people from the deep south of the USA edify Lincoln without realizing his conflicting sides.

    • @mcvegan
      @mcvegan 10 лет назад +1

      Charlotte Fairchild I was aware of some of the Lincoln issues and I know he was more about keeping the Union vs. freedom for slaves, so that was not a surprise. My Spiritual views are very personal but first and foremost I am keen on REASPECT he is so eloquent but had an in-your face attitude with his words, perfect example the "Just Silly Poem " on Mount Rushmore... that being said, given the chance I would love to sit for a chat and he is fascinating.

      +Prince Blair> How sad you're world must be that you simply cannot listen to a conversation between two people. A conversation, in fact where you could possibly learn, if you were open, from the life experiences of a man that learned to be strong. As he mentioned, Native Americans have no power compared to other races/ethnic groups. Think about that, when you hear him talk not only about his alcoholism in addition to his bi-polar diagnosis. Listen to his stories and poems - his ability to create great writing! Just listen....that's all. Do you not hear it?
