As an ex crim from South Australia (been out 10+yrs)
I can say that the prisons are very similar to this. Australia put a lot into rehabilitation & that's how it should be. Your still locked away with your freedom taken from you. No matter what, people are either going to change or they won't
The US have high rates of inmate's getting out & going back due to the way the system is set up. You get out & have little chance of getting a job or finding somewhere to live so what are people going to do to survive. Go back to what they were doing before, committing crimes. At least in Australia we have programs for ex offenders & parolees leaving prison. If you want a second chance you need to stay straight & the system should be there to assist & support. If you don't look after the community, it falls apart. Thank goodness I'm an Aussie. No offence

What in the hell are you talking about? This is the reason why they are there because these women committed crimes and that's why they got life in prison. Why. Because they need to be punished what they did. And they should not be released in prison because if they do they will kill again. That's why these criminals are staying in there for the rest of there lifes

Girlfriend needs to go to America and check out their prisons. She'd be stunned. There's Bedford Hills in upstate new york where rap stars da brat, foxy brown and even lauryn hill of the fugees for income tax evasion. Ohio Reformatory For Women (orfw), and in the west coast there's Chowchilla where former charles manson member patricia krenwinkle did 53 years in prison and got released. Also there's camp summit shock a boot camp type prison. I love this reporter, at ORFW has a convenience type store and if you are a prisoner and you buy from another inmate and not pay on time, you get "beat". They also have gangs as well.

Science has shown that punishment has not worked to reduce crime. Prisons are in fact universities for crime. Psychopaths don't learn from punishment anyway, so by all means lock them away but don't regard it as punishment. As for the others, particularly those who have been abused, restorative justice is what is needed, that is, a recognition of their circumstances and doing what it takes to change the system so they don't get abused in the first place.
