- Hi guys. Finally, in this video, I will show you a way that could fix this so annoying and so famous trackpad issue that all Dell Inspiron 16 Plus RTX 3060 Model have experienced. I can't promise that it will work with your model, but it's worth trying it, and it won't harm you or your machine.
I hope this will help and solve your problem.
Thanks and see you soon!

We clearly need to start a class action lawsuit against Dell for this. I am having more than 1 issue with my Inspiron 16 Plus: The trackpad glitches, select keys on my keyboard are not working 10% of the time, and the speakers are making a cackling sound, even when the speakers are below 50% volume, and I hardly ever go past 50% on the volume. This Laptop is everything I wanted, but these issues make it below worth it, and I sadly purchased it almost 2 months ago, so I can't even return it anymore.
Man this is so unfortunate. Sorry about that. For sure Dell must do something about it considering the fact that this laptop is one of the most used one from Dell. So I totally agree with you.
i actually bought it brand new and had many of the same issues. I got them to come check out the speaker and they determined the right speaker was blown... they replaced it. Not sure how a new machine could flop in many areas?
As expected from what Dell became, a company who has been only scamming customer with their support ( I think in the past it was synonym of quality and good support, unfortunately no more) I have this same model and my touchpad works erratic since the laptop was 8 month old. They changed but didn't fix the issue. As soon my warranty support expired they ghosted me, I tried to contact several times, but nobody answer anymore, blocked from my service chat. They promised that they would fix the problem, and they only gained time to make my warranty expire. The laptop got worst, and till I can buy another one, I'm using it only with the touchscreen, but it does not work well with my need on Microsoft world, also it gets hot and I have to restart the system several times. From now on the only advice I give for all: Don't buy Dell, scamming brand!
This is not the solution. The problem is that the trackpad has a poor ground (due to semi-conductive foam). Solution is to solder in a ground wire. See Dell forums for detailed solution. I hope Dell figures this out and quits mindlessly replacing perfectly good trackpad. Quite the fiasco on Dell's part.
I do agree about Dell being ignorant about this problem which is quite annoying.
I just ordered it. If I get the issue I will just try the soldering solution. I prefer a mouse and I will use it hooked to a screen on a laptop stand on my desk for 90% of the time anyways, but the trackpad should simply just work for the occasional websurfing on the couch. I am hoping though that dell may have fixed the problem in de models that come of the production line now a days. The device still seems a bargain. I got the rtx360 model with one TB for a little over 1200 euros.
@@sebastiaanvs6530 hopefully you won't get this problem and you will have a decent trackpad
I can confirm the grounding isdue : it does not work while the charger is plugged but works well without charger. A wired mouse works well in both cases.
It has worked so far for me after this fix! Thanks for the help!
Actually, my problems came back again :( might need a replacement touchpad
Great to hear that Jack. Hopefully it will stay like that.
@@jackhorcher3750 i dont think this will solve the problem mate because a lot of people changed it but the same problem occur.
Hi Petar,
ONE of the Dell posts has a guy who discovered it was the battery swelling and interfering with the trackpad (directly above it). He had an interesting DIY fix, there are photos on of the Inspiron forum threads. I haven't tried exactly that fix, but I did put my Inspiron 16 into service mode, removed the bottom cover, unscrewed the battery, very gently massaged it, and then screwed it back in. I didn't even need to disconnect it, it just lifted right out. Since doing this, I haven't had any problems for 5 days. Also, I began having the trackpad problem when I replaced the RAM (replaced 16Rx1 with 8Rx1 modules). I don't know if disturbing the battery made this happen. It's actually my 2nd Inspiron 16, after having my original one replaced also because of the dreaded trackpad problem. It is definitely a hardware-related problem, as I have had it happen to me in the BIOS setup (I even have a video of it).
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Thank you for your comment, Jack. I did read this one too but i didn't want to dismantle my laptop as i am not very familiar with that :D. So I didn't want to damage it even more :D. Thank you anyway.
TY! Maybe Dell can provide a non-swelling reinforced battery to current owners and in the future.
Massaged ur battery bruh
@@triniox3186 haha i am afraid to do that man :D
@@triniox3186 lol
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but it comes down to a ground wire issue within the pad itself. I have the premium warranty and had the trackpad replaced twice when I first received it a year ago but it kept malfunctioning but bothered to give it another go three weeks ago and I haven't had a problem since. The tech mentioned that the sku was different between the old and new replacement parts so it's possible that they have resolved the issue. Alternatively, there are walkthroughs on how to perform this task yourself. Cheers.
Thanks man this will be very useful for a lot of people. Cheers 🙏.
I've done the soddering copper wire to the trackpad to ground it and it still has issues. It's not a permanent solution.
@@volstarthemagi3859 so there is no solution to this problem so far.
@@PetarLeykov ill say this, soddering definitely "improved" the funtionality. It doesn't glitch out nearly as often as it used to, but the laptop still has tracking issues, especially after "moving" the laptop around too much, or even when it gets hot.
In the past when this happened it required a full reboot, but now i can usually set it down for a minute, then ctrl-alt-del to bring the blue screen, then hit "esc" to return home and it will work again for a while.
Its a pain, but it's better then a full reboot and offers a bit more functionality. So if you're out of warranty and stuck with the inspiron, soddering will help the issue certainly, but it's not a permanent fix IMO.
People are reporting a copper tape fix also works.
my trackpad has never worked, but this video has fixed it. Thank you :)
That's great Brad. Hopefully will stay fixed from now on.
I had my trackpad replaced on warranty and the replacement does work. If it craps out again I will try this!
EDIT:
My solution is probably temporary, but it does not void warranty. For more reliable results you need to solder. Do it at your own risk as it voids the warranty. Best tutorial video i've found is here:
ruclips.net/video/4xGq5gmKEAA/видео.html
Sorry but it's mostly coincidence that this solution helped you.
It is almost certain that the issue is with hardware, as trackpad fools around the same in bios.
Knowing all cases, most logical explanation to the issue is trackpads ground misconnection.
If you have some tech skills, you may try:
1. Open laptops back lid
2. Disconnect the battery (small cable in right side), then remove battery
3. Now you should see trackpads back side (blue board that is covered with metal plate).
4. In each side of the plate there are small metal tabs that "touches" the trackpads copper contacts through mini sponges. It is thought that connection here decreases over time as you are pushing the trackpad everyday, and from other side the battery expands a little when it's hot (also pushing the trackpad). This explains why issue disappears and appears randomly and why replaced trackpads starts to fool around again in some time. I agree with this theory completely as laptop is pretty cramped in space.
5. What you should do is to push the tabs a little so they contact the sponge (and copper part) better and also you can clean the tabs if you are enthusiastic.
6. Put the battery back and connect it, then screw on the lid.
7. Tell me if that helped :)
P.S. it's kinda sad that this all around powerhouse has a trackpad plague. Otherwise it's an excellent laptop. Dell's incompetence dealing with this issue is unforgivable. My model year is 2022 and this issue still appeared. They should fixed it a long time ago.
Man, that comment is incredible. That is the most detailed comment I have ever seen. Obviously, you know what you are talking about and how to do it. But I am not so handy to dismantle my laptop and I don't to screw something inside it hahaha. Anyway hopefully other people will read that comment and try your advice. Thanks again.
I can confirm I did that on my inspiron 1510 and it fixed the issue. Big grounding issue
Great video! How you figured the solution out I will never know but your method totally solved my trackpad isse. Thanks:)
Wow, that's great, mate. I am glad that this helped you 👏👏👏. But sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
It worked for me!!! Thank you so much!!$
That's amazing Stephanie ☺️
Hi Petar. I have the same laptop, and my question is... after doing all this, have you experienced a trackpad issues again?. I am just wondering if this is just a workaround fix, but the problem still there to emerge unexpectedly. What has been your experience so far?. I know this was posted 4 days ago, and wondering if your laptop is still working with no trackpad problems.
Hi Demis. Thank you for the comment. Since I did that, I didn't experience this problem for a while, and yesterday I had it again, but this time wasn't as bad as it used to be, and after a few seconds, it was ok again. So as I said in other comments, this is a very strange and frustrating issue.
@@PetarLeykov Yeah, it is been a frustrating issue for me. I hope Dell resolves this because it is a nice laptop, but the touchpad issue makes it difficult to work with. Thank you Petar.🙂
@@demisrasohu7668 me too. Thank you for the comment.
Bloody fuck'n thank youuuuuu I had a bad day because of this and I gave it a try, it worked!!!
Man I am so happy for you that this tip helped you Ahmede.
Hello guys, After doing this operation , I noticed 3 new issues , you also?
1) Bump on the surface of the trackpad exactly at the location of the soldering operation, it is ugly
2) strange light electric buzz sounds coming directly from trackpad when you don't touch it, you put your ear close to it, and you ear it as if you hear electricity moving inside trackpad , strange! Before, was not the case! When you put the finger on track pad (contact), this noise disappear, otherwise its permanent noise
3) Device Security Issue
After doing this soldering operation, I noticed issues in Windows Security - Device Security
Before I could see the 3 features , core isolation, memory integrity and secured boot, and all was on and well.
Now, those features are fone completely, cannot see it, just white page, on top written :
"Standard hardware security not supported"
WOW. Thats's ugly and not nice. I haven't experienced that, to be honest. I hope you find the solution to that problem because, frankly, I don't know how to help you mate.
@@PetarLeykov ok
Hi i ordered this laptop a week before this video was published and now im waiting for delivery can my laptop come without this problem
?
Thank you for the comment Mouad. In most cases this particular model has this problem by default but yours might be ok. The only way to find this out is when you get it delivered. Hopefully it won't have this issue 🤞🤞🤞
@@PetarLeykov thank u
You welcome man 👍
@@PetarLeykov but is it a good laptop?
Is it easy to return this Dell laptop if I ended up having trackpad problems? I wouldn't want to spend $50 mailing it back, and I definitely wouldn't want to get constant trackpad replacements and/or have it replaced with a refurbished laptop.
Hi Louis. I had to return a dell inspiron 15 plus from Uk and it to be honest I didn't have any problems with it and also I didn't pay for the return as well. As they booked a day and time with a logistic company. They came to my place I handed the laptop and all no problems after that. But I don't know how it will be in USA.
@@PetarLeykov Thank you, Peter. I may give this laptop a try. Other than the trackpad issues, it looks great.
@@ljxn it's amazing laptop man. I've been using it for 5 months now and it's beast.
Mine (on order) has only integrated graphics. Wondering if this fix would even apply.
Its not sure that your laptop will have the same issue but even if does have it than you can try this fix. Also i might try to open my laptop one day if i have the courage to do it :D. But as i've been saying this laptop its a great choice and overall its a top performing laptop apart the trackpad problem.
it is a poor ground. buy 5$ two sided copper tape. fixed my problem permanently. took 5 minutes too. i found a oled inspiron 16 7620 at work someone was throwing away because of this problem so needless to say 5$ for a $1500 machine is okay with me
That sound like solution.
Hello Petar. Is it possible on this Inspiron to lower the Wifi signal (power setting) ?
Regards
Hey Jerome, frankly I don't have an idea man. For sure there will be some info about it if you check with Google. I hope you find answer to that.
Unfortunately almost nobody does not have any interest in that. And because I'm interested into this computer, I prefer to ask to someboay who already own one to see into the parameters.
So much wifi devices and drivers and computer to find any reliable answer on internet.
@@jeromehugues listen I will see later it that's possible on my laptop mate and will let you know.
@@PetarLeykov Thank you for this and for your time.
@@jeromehugues no problem mate
For anyone still hanging on to this laptop in 2024, I fixed this in under 10 minutes. It's a hardware issue. All you need is some single-sided copper tape. Please see the other video where he opens up the laptop to look at the bottom of the touchpad.
ruclips.net/video/4xGq5gmKEAA/видео.html
There are two copper-colored metal rectangles. You scratch about a half centimeter diameter of the coating off of each side and then put tape over that exposed metal so that the tape goes all the way to the surrounding metal brackets that has the tab. I did this on both sides. I had no issues after doing this. The touchpad just needs to be grounded and not build up a static charge.
I'm still hanging on to this thing because I got a fairly souped up spec laptop AND got the max warranty on it until 2026 so it seemed dumb to get rid of it for something that can be fixed easily. Dell is unaware and also does not care about a fix. If you all them for service, they'll send someone out to replace the touchpad with the exact same thing. I had this done twice with no improvement.
Man this will be super useful information for all this people who owe this laptop, including me. Thank you very much bro.
is this a temporary solution or is it fixed permanently?
It's more temporary solution and to be honest I don't know if there is a permanent solution brother
Today they replaced the trackpad and its working well for now. I hope it will not return back.
That's good mate. Hopefully it will be ok.
it worked for me, don't hesitate to try it
Thanks mate
Super happy to hear that man 🙌🙌🙌
This is frustrating. My laptop is still new. I take great care of it. I don't even use it much. The pointer freezing doesn't allow me to use it anymore.
Bloody hell they haven't fix it yet. When did you buy your laptop mate?
@@PetarLeykov March of this year

@@PetarLeykov I'll give that a try. Thanks lots!
@@Meecte no worries man. Hopefully it will work.
Is it still working fine?
Yes it is and I can't believe it 😆😆
This is not the right solution. The root cause is grounding. Only way to fix it is to add contact between the copper part and the stainless steel casing of the track pad which I found at least 2 youtube videos detail it
Thanks for the advice but definitely I wouldn't be capable of doing that hahaha
Still dell selling this crap and looting customers. What a wicked world
Apart the trackpad I am fine with them hahaha
I know some cases are individual. But I must say I got my Dell Inspiron 16 plus in the beginning of August of 2021. They have replaced the laptop 4 times (probably refurbished) and other 2 times they replaced the trackpad. It's been almost 7 months back and forth, and I am done. I am just lucky they are taking it back and reimbursing my money. I suggest if got your laptop replaced 1 to 2 times, or had the trackad replaced and still having problems. It is better to return it and get your money back, or you will end getting my laptop. LOL 😆. Because you will be getting every time, a refurbished laptop or one that has been "Fix" and used previously. Hope sharing my experience helps some of you to make a better decision based on your situation.
Thank you for that great comment Demis. This is really not acceptable from Dell. In that case it's better buying another laptop.
I just sent a comment in another video..not sure that would help .
Man, this touchpad thing is so annoying I really want to buy this laptop but I'm worried my touchpad will not work... I'm still in two minds...
Overall this laptop is excellent. Honestly, and I am not sure that your touchpad will have the same problem. But even if it has it, you can use a mouse.
Thank you!!!!
You welcome Carla 👏.
Hi Petar, I bought inspiron 16 plus on dec 12 i got same issue, they replaced touchpad once but that didnt work so asked for a new laptop and they sent me a new one today, Hope this one works fine😅😅
Hi Harshith. Thank you for the comment. Hopefully, the new one won't have that problem.
How the new one ?
Here is what I did that seemed to fix the problem.
Open Device Manager.
Under Human Interface Devices open I2C HID Device.
Select the Power Management Tab.
De-select "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
After completing those steps, I have not had the smallest problem with my touchpad for the last week.
I really hope that this will solve this solution and also help other people with that problem.
Hi still working ok ?

Sorry mate. The thing is that it might work and it might not work and it's individual. I am afraid that there is not a solution that really can target this problem. As I said in the video you can use wireless mouse.
