the HED C+ aluminum rim geometry is spot on - used across their clincher line. The channel in the middle is low enough that I can get any tubeless tire on and off by hand but when the beads seat on their perfect seal shoulders you get a big pop sound and when you deflate the tires they stay on the beads. It takes quite some force to break the beads. Think motorcycle beads but easier. So the tires are really on there firmly. Only had one flat last year (HED everything) at speed and the tire stayed on solid. I run only 23mm since on all my HEDs they run 26.4 to 27.0 nice round profile. 23mm Schwalbe Pro Ones are magic on these rims. Love these wheels. The standard Ardennes SL+ wheels are the best value in cycling. Opposite of Mavic rubbish. Good hubs. Happy you discovered these in your region. C+ rims are rather precious at $150 retail but build up the best wheels ever.
Nice review. I own Jet Black 6's and the braking on them is unbelievable. To the point where they stop as good as any of my hydro disc brake bikes. Highly recommended.
Hi Ronald, I keep coming back to your videos for information:-) I keep coming back to these wheels as they seem the ideal combination of aero and brake performance, weight and tubeless compatibility. 1) Would you recommend these in 60mm depth (Jet 6 Plus) as allround, for training and multi-day events in the Alps or Dolomites? I'm also 60kgs (wish I had your power though). 2) Unfortunately my bike is not of the newest generation, it is limited in tire height (width is not really an issue). My current rims have 18.25mm internal width, I can baaarely run my 25mm Schwalbe Pro One on these, on the rear wheel I have ~1mm clearance in height. As these HED wheels are 21mm internal width, I would have to go to 23mm tires, but I still am not sure if I'll be able to fit them. Any thoughts on this?
how fragile is the skin / fairing? if I press them with my fingers are they going to break? I've been going back and fourth on the jet rc5 plus black for a long long time...
The fairings can be quite weak. Same as my Old Zipp 400s. Old but still going. On the other hand I also have few pairs of HED trispokes which are very strong but a bit heavy (and optimised for 19mm tyres.....)
Reckon a alu-rim and fairing like HED have is a good applicatory trade-off instead of a carbon clincher that the breaking wall can fail, as carbon rims should only be used for tubulars !
Great review, I love these wheels. I have the Jet 9 plus and Jet plus disc on my TT bike. Had a set of Jet plus 6’s on my S5. Replacing those with Jet 6/9 combo with powertap. Great wheels and great braking even with the standard Jet plus design. I’ve had Roval CL60s, Mavic CC80’s in the past and these beat them hands down.
Hey Ron awesome review on the Hed wheel set. I've been interested to hear about these wheels for a while now. I eventually want to get a rear disc to go along with my enve 7/8 Wheels. Can we also expect to see a test ride video on the 7/8 carbon Clincher that you purchased? Thanks again and can't wait to hear the test results on these three brand sets.
Ronald Kuba I must have missed the actual ride review. I know you were waiting for the weather to break. Thanks for the reply and keep up the awesome work.
Hi, two things. 1) why did you choose the Jet 9 Black over the H3 or GT3 Tri-spoke front wheel? 2) Both HED and Molten Speedwax are from Minnesota and have some history with each other.
Bonjour Ronald, j'aimerais savoir si la jet plus est en 60 MM ou en 88 MM, s'il-te-plait. Merci par avance pour ta réponse car j'envisage d'acheter ces jantes.
What materials were used in setting these up for a tubeless interface? I'm loving my 6+'s but haven't been able to pinpoint what I need for tubeless conversion. Thanks!
Ronald, thanks for your reply, I should've been more specific. I realise I need the appropriate versions of the sstuff you mention, but seeing as the valve/rim interface is different on HEDs vs. normal rims I was wondering what make/model tubeless valve was used. Or would any 80mm tubeless valve work?
I actually did tape a big cardboard shaped into a circle from a amazon order onto my box section wheels. Did feel a bit faster. On the straights and no headwind(don't know the yaw angle at some points) it was probably 10-15 watts faster. Possibly lower. But it sounded very similar to an actual disk wheel
Hello. I am currently using DT Swiss RC38 Spline wheels (clincher), and I am looking for replacements since I am also looking for a new carbon bike. I love my DT Swiss wheels since they are lightweight for climbing but I am looking for more aerodynamic one's since aerodynamics is the theme with this next bike. How do you like your HED wheels? Are he wheel still stiff even though it is alloy brake surface with some carbon (and not full carbon)? Do you think I would be happy with the Jet Black 40mm RC wheels (that use alloy-carbon)?
Bike Radar just made a review of aero wheels from best to worst of all known brands used in cycling. The best performing and fastest aero wheel in all situation is 1. ENVE 2. HED Jet 3. Knight 90mm 4. ZIPP. But zipp is the fastest in a head on wind and without wind but real world situation is not like that, that's why they landed 4th because the 3 out performs zipp... So yeah HED is a pretty good wheelset. I actually have them too hehehe but i prefer my zipp 808 and super 9 as race wheels because they are more flashy and the cafe bling is over the top.
wait a moment...28mm internal width? thats more like the rim width of a trailbike rim! If it was 28mm external i would believe that, though that's still huge. A 25mm tire should work perfectly with that since they blow up to more sth like 27mm which would fit the "95%" rule of the tire width to rim width Edit: Watched the video to the end. Yes, you later on used the correct numbers, im sorry. Very happy to see HED wheels on your channnel. Plan to get them for my TT bike since they are so well priced and tubeless compatible which does make quite some watts less for rolling resistance
In the Bikeradar deep section wheel test they performed quite well. Only beaten by the heavenly 7.8 by Enve. Though i don't know how you think of that test. The combined drag number was a really stupid idea IMO. Did you ever have a look at Knights Composites wheels? I'm looking at the enourmously deep 95mm deep ones. Crosswind stability is stated to be very good for it's size, perhaps not the weight, but then again braking is also quite good afaik.
Excellent video, as always. HED is severely underrated. The only guys I see riding HED wheels are tri guys, but they make amazing wheels in general. I have raced on a pair of the older Jet 6 wheels for a season and I loved them. In fact, liked them better than my Mavic Cosmic Ultimates. A while back, the top of the line Bontrager wheels were rebadged HED wheels. Apparently, Trek thought highly enough of HED to use them.
@Dont Axeagin I really don't know. I had borrowed the wheels from a friend of mine while my Mavics were in the shop getting the all to common hub bearing replacement.
HED wheels were supplied to the USPS team for the Tour de France during the Armstrong era. HED couldn't have their own logo on their wheels without being any "official" sponsor which, for that race, is tens of thousands of dollars to have your own sticker on your product that you are supplying for nothing. Those teams and athletes at that performance level know who really made their components and know where to get them from. That is why you may not see their stickers in a race of that relies on huge sponsors and will see their stickers on races that are more centered on individual athletes.

I agree, they inflate with just a pump

How’s the brake track holding up? Still black?

It is not fragile, but also probably not strong enough to break your fingers.
The fairings can be quite weak. Same as my Old Zipp 400s. Old but still going. On the other hand I also have few pairs of HED trispokes which are very strong but a bit heavy (and optimised for 19mm tyres.....)
J B I will keep them in bags just to be sure

lee a dorney that's wrong. I have raced the complete season on carbon clinchers with zero problems. Zipp and Enve, not some Aliexpress trash.

I agree
@@ronykuba Hello guys..sorry for my english. Not better to have a pair of JET6 + Disc? 6+disk if flat, 6+6 if D+?
@@romainm7147 depends on your confidence. A disc is always faster, not much point in 6-6.
Hey Ron awesome review on the Hed wheel set. I've been interested to hear about these wheels for a while now. I eventually want to get a rear disc to go along with my enve 7/8 Wheels. Bradley Morris I already have a review of the 7.8s. Some say they are as fast as a disc, we'll see.

Bogdan Rylski I didn't choose. The guy was selling this pair. If there will a black 3, then I would considet that as well.
At 3:30, you said that it have an internal width of 28mm. But at 6:49, you said 21mm of internal width. So what is it really ?
21
Dũng Lê Văn 21mm internal, 28mm external. Not even XC MTB wheels have 28mm internal width.
I just ordered some HED Plus 5s
There gonna be sweet
Bonjour Ronald, j'aimerais savoir si la jet plus est en 60 MM ou en 88 MM, s'il-te-plait.

Has your brake track worn off?
no
Keep a good eye on the brake pads so that the brake track isn't trashed. I just check my brake pads after every ride with compressed air and a light.
Thurston Howell III thanks for the tip, I won't be braking to much on these though
Yeah I don't know, what was I thinking.. who brakes
Do NOT use rim destroying Shimano pads. Swiss Stop pads brake better and don't trap destructive metal chips.
What materials were used in setting these up for a tubeless interface? I'm loving my 6+'s but haven't been able to pinpoint what I need for tubeless conversion. Thanks!
Pieter van der Made tape, sealant, valves and tires

Pieter van der Made try Silca tubeless valves and tape, they are the best on the market.
Will do, cheers!
I’m still waiting a month later to get my hed wheel set back from warranty 👎
So if I put duct tape over my box section aluminum rims to make them like a disc wheel, would they be more aero?
Liam Sangaku probably not

Calvin Pessl the 23s measure 27 on these, quite wide. We'll see how they perform.

tri*
Tri spokes are slow

maybe before the end of your reviews, you could try the wheels so we can see how they perform.
Maybe giving suggestions on 5 year old videos is not that helpful 🙃
Was that an Argon-18 119? Is that your new bike?
Maraz Ali it's not my bike, since it's a triathlon bike
You didn’t say the weight 😂!
Don't these wheels run full of water when cycling in pouring rain?
CreRay no, they don't
I'm a big fan of HEDs. Great speed/value.
harrylook now I am a fan myself
What country do you live in?
Cal Cycling Slovakia
Peter Sagan nope
But they dont make any full carbon wheels, do they?
osn 3205 all of the Stinger tubular wheels are full carbon, plus the new Vanquish tubeless disc brake clincher.
thank you for sharing!
SimSimon87 thanks for watching
just bought a new hed disc for 200$
Wow 200 bucks!!!?? I would like to buy that for that price. You are verry lucky.
Maraz Ali thx yes I am
