To be fair, the paintings are basically just portals to another world, so maybe it's possible that the painting he got trapped in is a portal to a pocket dimension that one can't escape from without help?
I doubt many will know what I’m talking about, but your explanation reminds me of trap books from Myst which are linking books that without the actual link to another world.

There’s actually a way to tell which stair you need to go up in the tree hollow, the the stairs a few levels above you will have one set that aren’t lit, that’s the one you go up. But the closer you get, the torches will be lit so you have remember which one wasn’t lit.

Ok, so. For the Mario is a "sociopath" theory about him "not" caring about Luigi rescued him the first time in (the infamous) Mario Is Missing.
The NES version didn't have dialogue. Not to mention, there's a results screen that's says "THANK YOU!" meaning Mario is happy that his brother (and the player!) saved him.

12:35 the one Luigi uses is probably just the ds, when he is holding it, both the ds and the him are transported. But to not overclutter the system, it can only do 1 at a time, and the cameras can only take in and not out.
So far the ds is the only device in a Luigi’s mansion game that matches the one you play with (1 uses a gameboy color and 3 uses a virtual boy) until you get to the switch version
