Lifelong Timberwolves fan here and I can say that most of us are happy with Rudy and actually respect him I ran into him at a target and dude paid for everyone in store. He's also an elite defender sure I don't think he should've won all those DPOTY awards but he for sure deserved 2 the other ones are fkr sure debateable.

Basketball asides, Gobert just oozed “French”-ness, making him simply, detestable. Him being one of the most dominant and annoying defender while possessing limited offensive skillset just added tons of fuel to the fire. Players neither want to play with and against him, nor respect and love him. He’s just that type of one in a generation loathsome person, it’s amazing. It’s even more amazing that he has beef with the previous generational loathsome piece of ass, Green. Truly a clash of titans.

He’s hated because he impacts the game being one-dimensional on the other side of the ball. Nobody respected Dwight either. Only “shut-down” defenders like Tony Allen and Jrue Holiday get respect for their defensive impact because you see it so much in the iso.
Hell, Shawn Bradley got mad disrespected for always getting dunked on even though he’d be leading in blocks all the time. It’s about aesthetics as much as it is about stats in the modern age.

@@Romanus- better than Rudy, he certainly was. But Dwight still had a subpar offensive repertoire and has been disrespected immensely simply because he never dominated on that side of the ball. I’m just saying that especially the last 10 years, more traditional centres haven’t been garnering the respect they deserve just because they’re not offensively gifted like a lot of modern centres who can barely play defence but can more technically switch on to defending smaller guys. The love affair with 3 point shots has made still important parts of the game seem irrelevant. Like altering shots and being a presence in the paint.

Before watching the video, here’s why I think people disrespect him;
1- He seems to have never worked on improving his offensive game in any way whatsoever. Adding just a few post moves would have been a huge improvement
2- He’s won more DPOY’s than I think he deserves. If he had 2 or something I don’t think people would care as much but when yo have as many as Mutumbo, more than Hakeem, etc it rubs people the wrong way
3- His fault or not he’s been absolutely getting cooked in the playoffs due to his inability to even been serviceable on the perimeter. Bam and AD will get cooked a lot if switched on guards but not nearly to the degree as Rudy.
4- He talks a lot for a guy that is a liability on offense.
I think it’s mostly getting cooked in the playoffs tho. A lot of fans don’t watch the regular season so when they see a DPOY getting cooked year after year in the playoffs they just assume he’s a fraud
Rudy was fantastic this postseason and had the highest plus-minus for the Wolves. He’s become great for a big on the perimeter as well. Everyone just focuses on that one Luka shot in the WCF because they don’t watch the Wolves until it’s unavoidable.
Perimiter defense are to be played by guards, when are you gonna start calling guards for being one dimensional, for scoring 2 and giving UP 4 in the defense? For letting their teams play 4x5 on D.The contemporary guard sucks,only 1 fmvp for guards and 2 since dpoy since Jordan.It's a big Man league and guards arent doing that much, iguodola and durant saved curry's ass and got his fmvp.Nobody calls out guards for not doing their job on D

The first thing I knew about him was that.. He had the weird microphone touching thing. Switching on defense usually gets him usually a tough assignment on a prime-time guards late in the game.. boy do those highlights travel. He's a bit quirky and/odd. It would be great if he scored He gets in odd on-court disputes and fights with teammates and non-teammates. He hasn't gone far in the playoffs, that's not only his "fault". I know/see all of that and I'm a casual fan. Finally we hear Shaq talk about him. We hear current players rate him as #5 most overrated and the top center in that category.
Gobert is "unlucky" with timing, injuries, who is selected to be on his team, or his coach. It's not his fault that he's not hip or a marketable player. Not having the right mix of all of that can make success harder and it effects a player's perceived greatness or success.

7’9” wingspan is very good but not great. Kevin McHale had a 8’0” wingspan although he was 6’10” tall.
I think Gobert is disrespected a bit too much. Sure he’s not in the same league as Olajuwon, Ben Wallace, Mutombo, Rodman, etc. Gobert is still a very good defender as a big man.

My first time seeing Rudy Gobert was on nba 2k14 i played that game every time and when i saw his rating was lowest ever with 47 i was making fun out of it none stop, but in actual world of basketball in his rookie season he showed some great promise but where he really exploded was fiba world cup in 2014 in quater finals against great Spainish team, he destroyed Pau Gasol locked down the paint in game where score was in 50s, and i knew there and then thankfuly to him beating Spain we were able to beat France in semis and i will always love Gobert for that
( no need to mention what happend in the final against US)

Honestly the only justifiable reason to hate him would probably be because you can low key kinda blame him for kicking off all the covid stuff in the NBA.
