I’m a Canadian, played hockey since I was 4. Fighting is necessary. It stops the majority of cheap shots and dirty plays. When you know if you do something dirty to a player especially a star player that you have to drop the gloves you will think otherwise. Gotta let the players police the game. Go Oilers go.
Not only that but each player has a deadly weapon in their hands and 2 on their feet. With such an emotional sport, fighting is a necessity to prevent further escalations.

@ericschmitz2529 Yes. Which is why it's arm punches, and if I want to watch real fighters, I watch boxers and martial artists. Not skaters, pulling shirts.
Canadian here, started playing hockey when I was 4. When I was in 12th grade I was the co-captain of our high school soccer team. The other co-captain and I were having a major on going disagreement about the team that finally boiled over and mid practice the 2 of us walked to the middle of the pitch and we agreed it was time to settle this thing. I looked at him and just said "hockey code" and he agreed. We wailed on each other for about a minute, felt like 20, and he went down and I stopped. He got up offered his hand and said "okay we do it your way". We finished practice and I offered him a drive home, which he took. I'm 56 now, we still go for beers when we're in the same town. If you're a Canadian the Hockey culture bubbles over into everything else.
Hockey is the only sport that has its players police with their fists, but they're not the only sport that does it. I'd much rather go toe to toe throwing hands, vs baseball, where we use 100 mph projectiles to send messages.

People who want fighting out of Hockey are not true hockey fans. Fighting is part of the culture and should never leave. It's good for the game, good for the fans, and good for the players. It actually makes the game SAFER (except for Rempe since he's on a concussion speed run).
I'd love elaboration on... well... any of those points lol. I don't necessarily think it's a terrible thing that should be outlawed... but I don't see any good arguments for why, other than: we've always done it so we should get to keep doing it. Good for the game: then why is it only allowed in the men's game, and only at the top level Good for the fans: huh? Good for the players: I can understand this one the most, but it's still not convincing Makes the game SAFER: you're really gonna have to explain that one to me, cuz that's a pretty whacky take.
@@happysqWid 1. Women's Hockey: Has no fighting because that is how it was developed. It also has virtually no hitting/checking. It's the trajectory the women's game took, which is different from the men's. They're essentially two different styles of the same sport. The women's players simply don't want fighting, but they have discussed more hitting, which is already evident in the PWHL. 2. Junior/IIHF/NCAA hockey: For Junior and NCAA Hockey, there is no fighting (fights occasionally do happen, however) for a couple reasons: The obvious one most would point out is concerns about the players being young and having a developing brain. While true, a major reason is that these leagues are significantly less physical than the NHL, which means less necessity to fight (more on this later). The latter is also true for the IIHF, but the IIHF also is largely European, and European hockey developed MUCH differently than North American Hockey. Just because most non-North American Men's leagues are different is not a reason that the NHL should homogenize. The leagues developed differently, like two geographically separated species, creating unique ways to play the game which has only served to grow and evolve the game. It should also be noted that fighting is NOT only at the top level in North America (NHL), but it is also allowed in the AHL and the ECHL. 3. Good for the fans: Obviously, fans love to see a fight. It's entertainment, but true hockey fans also like to see their team's players stand up for each other and answer the bell (agree to fight if they made a dirty hit/play) and they, the fans, respect the opposing team for doing the same. The players respect it, too, which is why you'll often see two players tap each other on the helmets post-fight. 4: Good for the game/players/and safety: Simply put, fighting makes the game safer. Why? It provides players an outlet to police themselves. There are many unwritten rules for fighting. Both for when to fight and how to fight. It's dirty, for example, to swing on a player while he's on the ground. When someone falls down, the fight is usually over. Further, the refs miss A LOT of calls in the NHL--it's a fast, incredibly physical game and there is some level of incompetence--meaning a lot of dirty plays/hits. The NHL is much more physical than other men's pro hockey leagues. This inherently leads to dirty hits, which can be missed by the refs, which can lead to retaliation. Fighting allows players to de-escalate this. If a ref missed a dirty hit, and no one fought, that would lead to a retaliatory dirty and dangerous hit--that's a reality of the game. Fighting allows a controlled environment where two players can settle their differences, and the teams can move on. Often times, after a fight, you'll notice fewer dirty hits in the game as the fight puts the player's emotions back on track (it sparked both teams). It also protects skilled players. Why did no one hit Gretzky? Because he had enforcers who ensured his safety. So, again, Fighting and physical play protect players, especially star players. 6. There are bad fights/bad reasons to fight: These are in the minority, but they happen. Players fighting after an opposing player made a clean hit. Players fighting too often--this is not a major problem as even the league's "Heavyweights" (Deslauriers, Reaves, MacDermid, Foligno, etc.) only fight a handful of times a year. The problem exists with players like Rempe who has fought more than anyone in an incredibly short amount of time, but he is a major outlier right now, which is why he draws a ton of media attention. I agree these issues should be addressed, but the solution is not "No fighting," as that would lead to more dangerous hits. 7. If fighting makes the game safer, why is there less of it?: As stated, fighting is a way for players to police themselves, especially after uncalled dirty hits. Dirty hits, especially uncalled hits to the head, slashing, etc., were much more common in the early 90s to 2010s as players often got away with it or received little in the way of suspension. After that, the NHL cracked down on this and started making it a point to call major and minor penalties on hits to the head and other dirty plays, increased suspensions and fines for these actions, and , before all this, introduced a second referee in the late 90s to help keep track of things as the game is so fast-paced. 8. Culture: You said you don't see any good argument for why, other than: "We've always done it so we should keep doing it." Besides my points above, I never understood why people discredit this opinion. It is part of the culture of hockey. It's part of what makes the sport unique, and it has always been a key component of North American hockey. Why people are so eager to remove something from a culture they barely understand is distressing. As Bill Burr said, "We want to take the fighting out of hockey but not out of boxing?" It's a part of the game. There's a reason to it, there's an art to it, and players and true fans understand the need for its existence. There's a lot more I could write about each point, and I'm sure some contradictions I need to clean up, but I have frankly spent too much time on this post. Respectfully, do some research (The Code by Ross Bernstein is a good book for this) into the topic that isn't exclusively from people who isolate fights as fights are PART of the game not an isolated incident within the game.

No it’s epitome of cooler heads prevail. That’s literally the cliche play by play guy thing to say as the refs break it up and they voluntarily stop fighting. A good hockey game took place after this whereas you’d have to cancel the whole basketball game because the benches would have cleared.
Absolutely nailed it, and I am a Cdn. that played hockey from the 60's to the 80's. Old time hockey--if you want to take a cheap shot, you better expect to throw down. If you can't fight, you better have skills. Today's hockey, rats like the Bruin's captan, can take cheap shots without retribution.

The reason fighting in hockey works is culture. As a hockey player, you are expected to be a man and take care of YOUR business on the ice. 1v1. If you're not on the ice or it is not YOUR fight, you stay away. Football and basketball players can't resist changing it from 1v1 or worse, coming off the sidelines for a cheap shot. Simple as that.
I’ve been watching Hockey for 50 years. If you take fighting out of the game, you’re gonna take me out of the game. They don’t fight just to fight. There’s a reason why they fight. That’s why every game doesn’t have a fight. Hockey is the greatest sport ever And I really hope America wakes up and realizes that these players give 150% every second on the ice. You can’t say that about every sport

Always love this bit, acknowledging this great game and the talent that plays it. Furthermore having guys like PK on the show. Would be great to see some more special guests or even some other former fighters for the fighting bits. And goal scorers for the amazing play bits.
The reason why the goalies did not take part of this is the 10 min misconduct.... and being forced to leave the game if you are the second guy dropping the gloves.
Goalies tend not to fight for two reasons: 1) in order for goalies to fight each other, at least one of them must cross the center line, and a goalie crossing the center line results in a 2 minute penalty. 2) fights can lead to injuries, and an injured goalie is more devastating to a team than an injured forward or d-man.
"testicular fortitude" love how everyone knew they were going to fight, but they waited for the game to officially start to do it. just to make it clear, we are not fighting as men, we are fighting as players ;D
Enforcers who followed the code, absolutely. No need for goons on skates. Taking the fights entirely out isn't doing the NHL any favours, they've got to let there be a fair balance to the energy on the ice. Everyone who saw the last Rangers-Devil match up knew that when they saw Rempe come back something would happen. A full deck brawl two seconds after the puck drop? Yeah, that sounds right when you don't trust the league to let you sort the guy out in the game properly.
Remember watching PK Play on the Belleville Bulls and dude he was ALWAYS going to be a Legend! sucked to see him go to MTL but was always a huge fan of his game
Reminded of the Redwings, Avalanche fights of the late 90’s which to this day are the best… but as a hockey purist myself I don’t see how you can say fighting is not apart of the game? Watch "Ice Guardians" awesome documentary about the history of hockey and explains everything your aski g about, you can thank me later @@TheBootyGoonz
Love seeing some hockey being brought up
We're Talking Hockey 🎵
I’ve been watching hockey since I was 5 years old, and am loving the attention Pat brings to the game. Greatest game in the world, thanks Pat
Hockey is the ultimate sport 😤🇨🇦
The Hanson's tradition back in action.
Remember the 97 Avs/Wings retribution at the Joe!
March 26.....forever
Trouba and Miller destroyed their opponents. lol
Miller beat a guy who isn't a fighter.
@johnbrowne2170 miller isnt a fighter
@Siksdev Yeah, I forgot. His name is K'Andre.
Hail
As a redwing fan never call Pittsburgh hockey town again
Darren Panger is so awesome, try to get him on the program!
LFG Pat!! Lovin that hockey coverage!!
The fighting was badass, but also shoutouts to Dwight Freeney's spin moves on the line. Absolutely nasty
I'm a Detroiter. There needs to be more fighting in hockey like back in the day.
PAT needs to bring Boomer from WFAN to talk hockey
No one cares about hockey Boomer
Hockey defies the whole” cooler heads prevail “
No it’s epitome of cooler heads prevail. That’s literally the cliche play by play guy thing to say as the refs break it up and they voluntarily stop fighting. A good hockey game took place after this whereas you’d have to cancel the whole basketball game because the benches would have cleared.
Finally got the angle of Keandre absolutely wiping the floor with Marino! What a brawl that was!
That was the best game ever man !!
Being from Syracuse, it's so great to see Dwight get his flowers. Congrats big man, thanks for all the memories!
BEST SEGMENT ON ESPN.
now if only we can have it be weekly.....
PK blasting Daft Punk in the background lol
can't wait for playoffs!
First hockey video in 4 months. Damn bro
Did PK just say McDermit has more fighting experience than Matt Martin
Im giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Reaves is also a better representative of that description. I think he just got excited and meant to say “one of the biggest and most experienced guys”
@@jacoblamb3535I get it he got excited, former teammate. But yeah how can I even forget Reaves like come on. But in the full feature he also said Crosby is arguably the best player in the league rn and just no. Also he is a brutal announcer, hes kinda corny, he hates on my team and is now a meme among our fan base. For me a guy who truly loves the sport and wants to see it keep expanding it pains me that PK Subban of all people is the one representing the sport to this widely football audience. Im not a fan of him.
@@declanf.5532 i am an anti PK guy but i think he said everything right in this interview knowing it would reach nonhockey fans
"Testicular Fortitude" is a good one lmao. Subban is the man.
never heard that before?
"let me get the hell out of the way" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
“I was fighting in exhibition games” that’s actually pretty badass 🤣
No that’s just hockey buddy learn it
I’ve been watching Hockey for 50 years.
A hockey purist loves a good fight
"Darren Pang there... Fantastic Bald head!"...🤣
Pat, That happened between the Pistons and the Pacers back in the day, The Malice at The Palace.
Hockey purists have no problem with fighting in hockey. Its the outside sports writers who get free food in the press box and don't pay for a ticket or casual hockey fans who don't understand the WHY who don't like fighting. Purists know why and have zero problem with it.
It always amazes me what good skaters these guys are while fighting, I struggle staying on my feet just being on the ice.
Hockey is the best sport to watch live. The speed, action and the hits in a 0-0 game still make it amazing to watch.
as a devils fan this was the greatest thing i saw all season.. glad to see everyones in the wrestlemania spirit
Well said PK because you had to fight bigger guys to protect your teammates and you certainly did awesome, i certainly wouldn't fight you
from a french canadian hockey lifelong fan
pat hockey knowledge is a fresh air for this wonderful sport
rough/tough/fast/skill/
pat and the crew amazing work!!
Fighting is an integral part of the game. PK is best known for turtelling
I love how they put them all in the penalty box like in 5 mins it’s not gonna happen again 😂(Detroit Native glad the spirt of 3-26-97 is still alive)
For those people who don’t know fighting in hockey is part of the game to essentially referee the game . Dirty plays can end Careers and players on the bench and on the ice c it yet the ref might not ! There’s a reason the nhl has fighting just like the hockey beer league
Always love this bit, acknowledging this great game and the talent that plays it. Furthermore having guys like PK on the show. Would be great to see some more special guests or even some other former fighters for the fighting bits. And goal scorers for the amazing play bits.
I remember some pretty good fight games in Alaska in the ECHL days. Those guys would throw down for sure.
This fight was incredible, but it would've been perfect if the goalies came out to center ice and started throwing haymakers
The reason why the goalies did not take part of this is the 10 min misconduct.... and being forced to leave the game if you are the second guy dropping the gloves.
I’ve been saying it for years! How entertaining if all sports had this. Imagine how entertaining sports like tennis would be.
Haha gotta love Pat dancing around that people don’t fight 1 on 1 fists only anymore. Those were the days.
Love it that was old time hockey - habs fan
Goalies tend not to fight for two reasons: 1) in order for goalies to fight each other, at least one of them must cross the center line, and a goalie crossing the center line results in a 2 minute penalty. 2) fights can lead to injuries, and an injured goalie is more devastating to a team than an injured forward or d-man.
Hockey is a sport that due to the speed and danger, you need enforcers and some fights to keep everyone honest.
"testicular fortitude"
love how everyone knew they were going to fight, but they waited for the game to officially start to do it. just to make it clear, we are not fighting as men, we are fighting as players ;D
If you didn’t have fighting than the rats would be rampant throughout the nhl injuring people without any real consequences
Pks laugh at the penalty list is the best
Keep this game clean 😂keep Fighting 🥊😁🇨🇦🇺🇸
Best game on earth baby
Fighting has been a part of hockey since day 1 on the ponds.
Miss the days of enforcers
Enforcers who followed the code, absolutely. No need for goons on skates. Taking the fights entirely out isn't doing the NHL any favours, they've got to let there be a fair balance to the energy on the ice. Everyone who saw the last Rangers-Devil match up knew that when they saw Rempe come back something would happen. A full deck brawl two seconds after the puck drop? Yeah, that sounds right when you don't trust the league to let you sort the guy out in the game properly.
If NBA fought 10 players would be flopping on the floor
The real tragedy was 8 players being given an early mark.
Remember watching PK Play on the Belleville Bulls and dude he was ALWAYS going to be a Legend! sucked to see him go to MTL but was always a huge fan of his game
Pat McAfee is single handling bringing back what we all know and love baby
Reminded of the Redwings, Avalanche fights of the late 90’s which to this day are the best… but as a hockey purist myself I don’t see how you can say fighting is not apart of the game? It has literally been in the game since the NHL’s inception in 1917 then even loosened it some when it expanded into the United States in 1924.
