- Two childhood friends reunite in their working-class town.
TASBEEH is used with permission from Iqbal Mohammed. Learn more at / iqfilmmaker .
Abz and Sid are two old friends who are meeting up after not having seen one another in a while. They were childhood friends in the north of England, but now their lives have diverged. Sid has given up on his dreams of making music and now works in the shop run by his dad.
But Abz went away to college, interviewing for jobs near London and generally moving up in the world.
They chat and catch up, which only makes clear how much they've grown apart and how they feel about it. Those differences only become starker when they get into an altercation later in the night, and their different ways of handling it only increase the gulf between them.
Directed and written by Iqbal Mohammed, this compelling, well-crafted short drama charts the turning point of a friendship between two young men, both facing different prospects in life. Abz and Sid are two British-Muslim men who grew up together in the same scrappy town in northern England. Yet after their graduation, they took separate paths in life: Abz went to uni, while Sid stayed behind, working in the family shop as his parents struggled.
Shot with a moody, expressionistic naturalism that captures the night's thoughtful yet emotionally explosive nature, the narrative focuses on the friends' reunification, which is uncertain and hesitant, much like England itself after Brexit. The excellent storytelling is focused on their conversation, laying down the fundamental outlines of each character, along with their long-running friendship and affection. But careful attention is paid to not just what's being said but what's being avoided, and it's apparent to both Abz and viewers that Sid isn't happy with where he's at in life, though he glosses over this at first.
This latent frustration comes out, though, when Abz and Sid get harassed for speaking a moment of Punjabi. Sid goes after the harassers, though Abz wants to just let it go. The fight isn't played up for violence, and it has the effect of pushing the tension between the old friends into the open. As Sid, actor Naveed Choudhry gives voice to an immigrant family's frustration at being always a stranger in a strange land, but also of being young, full of promise but stuck in a life that feels like a stagnant trap. Played with great sympathy and a tinge of guilt by actor Ahmed Sher Zaman, Abz has gotten luckier, but he also consciously lets go of the resentment, living his life and making the best of his opportunities.
By the end of TASBEEH, Abz and Sid seem even farther apart than ever, their paths seeming to diverge even further. And yet, through some narrative sleight-of-hand, the film ends with a sense of hope, showing just how durable and true this friendship is. It also speaks to the nature of friendship itself: how a friend holds a light for the best version of ourselves, believing in us even when we can't quite seem to do it. - Кино
Hey there, fellow movie lovers! This is Iqbal, the passionate writer and director behind Tasbeeh. I'm thrilled that you've taken the time to watch my labour of love. If you have any burning questions about the film or just want to chat about it, I'm all ears! Let's dive into a Q&A together and explore the world of Tasbeeh.
Hi, Iqbal and all. Congratulations to each of you for finishing your creation.
I didn't really enjoy this, but I appreciate the opportunity to finish a project; especially a film project.
I don't really have any questions. Good acting, relatable.
Loved it. Especially the ending.
So happy for you Iqbal
Loved your work. My best wishes for the entire Tasbeeh team. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Being an Indian living in the US, there were countless times I've felt I don't belong here - my culture being mocked, looked down upon for my skin color, even random comments of strangers, "go back to your country" and all that stuff. This short hits close to home.
I'm sorry to hear that you've been through a tough time. Sadly, you're not alone in this. And that's exactly why we made this film - to share our experiences of true belonging and remind everyone that they're a part of something bigger. I'm so grateful that you took the time to watch it and hope it brought you some comfort and inspiration.
Let me fill your heart a little 💛 By saying truthfully I love you mate.😊
As a Mexican-American of working class background, the first generation of my family to go to university, this hit home and hit hard. The experiences of immigrants, wherever they may reside, is a common bond. Well done.
I saw this at the showroom cinema in Sheffield for its first screening and knew straight away that it was going to be a success. Congratulations to Iqbal, Hugh, Gabi and all the team behind it. Excellent acting too.
8:37 " you belong where you wanna belong"❤... " for some of us it just ain't that easy, is it".😢
Beautiful lines. Very relatable
Love the little twist at the end and the tale of friendship and hope. Amazing!
_Little_ twist?!?
I remember when this film came out. My friend is part of the production team and he never ceases to amaze. This particular piece I feel I personally could relate to, due to being of the demographic of the character and myself being from the UK seeing crime and vice from the streets when i was in my young adult days.
Awesome acting performances from everyone 😎
Great story.
Great acting from both people.
Terrific film, brilliantly acted. Amazing direction and writing. Heartbreaking yet uplifting.
My brother Immi doing bits! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 well done!
Such an incredible film and journey it's been on! So happy it's finally out for the public to see! Can't wait for everyone's reactions!!!!

Wish I could watch more content like this. Not experienced to live in a different culture or country but find deep meanings in the life as well.
Absolute pleasure working on this. So glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Beautiful film!
Great story but saddening
Such a beautiful portrayal of friendship. Love the way music is used so tastefully in it too.
He is lucky to have friends like that. most people isn't
I absolutely love your content Steve. Long time watcher , first time commenter. The trek is why I come but the commentary is why I stay. I respect your position on games 100%. But ... Some people like to experience "experiences" that's why games have different difficulty settings, some people are masochistic, while others just want the story. Cheat codes exist for a very good reason and I support games that utilize them as well. But at the end of the day it really is all about the experience you get out of it. I agree, games are for fun and the variety is for all those that might need something a little different.
A well shot movie with a beautiful meaning. Great job by the writer, director and the team
Thank you

Didn't see the whole thing but.. Sanskrit and Punjabi? Was Sanskrit only for rhyme?
His career won't go anywhere, you can't help people with a certain mindset. Trying to separate them from their chosen misery is like forcing an addict to stop when they aren't ready. Cut the friendship and move on, he's still fighting in the streets like some junior high nonsense, best not to let so called "friends" drag you down when they are clearly more comfortable with their miserable state. He tried every which way to encourage the friend, the storybook ending of him making it big on his music isn't going to happen, he's locked in a prison of his own making with his negative mindset. Hollywood endings usually aren't the real way stories end. His story likely ends when words trigger his anger and he gets the short end of the stick in a fight. Just how it is for a lot of people.
semi perfect
Fist
😅 o no
Wow they died at the end.. sad movie smh 😢
Wow, top comment is a spoiler, should I not bother watching now? 😂
