  • A lonely man discovers an abandoned dog that gives him a new outlook on life.
LUCY is used with permission from Mojean Aria. Learn more at / mojeanaria .
James collects electric scooters around Los Angeles for his job, driving around the city in the morning to look for them, swapping them out for freshly charged ones, and retrieving used ones in the sometimes odd places they're left behind. The job isn't idyllic; it's long, tedious work and he sometimes sees the worst of people as he goes about his day. And then at night, he comes home to an apartment filled with scooters, where he lives alone, equally isolated.
But one day, as he pulls out an errant scooter from a tree, he encounters an abandoned dog. He rescues the dog and takes it home, but when his landlord comes by demanding money, James is told the dog has to go. There's only one way to keep a pet at the complex: it has to be a service animal. So James goes about getting the dog certified as one -- one that pulls him into unexpected emotional territory he may not be ready to confront.
Written and directed by Mojean Aria, this deceptively quiet drama begins with an extended sequence of its main character going through his daily routine. Told with no dialogue but deliberate pacing and an eye for telling detail, gesture and expression, we see a reserved, taciturn James go about his job as an electric scooter collector. There's a striking aspect inherent in such work, but it isn't milked for whimsy by the storytelling. Instead, it is mundane, isolating and at times alienating, rendered in a flat yet bright naturalism and framing that emphasizes James's isolation. The job does allow James to traverse many obscure pockets of Los Angeles, but this wide perspective often isn't expansive, particularly when James encounters violence or suffering.
Such everyday brutality wears on James, which suffuses even his home and private life, situated in a cramped, rundown apartment. His routine there is equally lonely, with his only human interaction being harangue and harassment for payment by his landlord. Still, he summons some small degree of compassion when he comes across an abandoned dog and takes her home. The pacing then picks up, particularly when James embarks on a quest to get the dog certified as an emotional support pet (which offers the opportunity for some dry, cynical humor.)
We get the sense that James is already attached to the dog, enough to go about the task of certification with a psychologist. But the session goes in an unexpected direction, particularly as he faces personal questions about his state of mind and heart. The questions are uncharted territory for James, and actor James Aaron Oliver conveys the sense of a man unaccustomed to introspection.
But he must answer the queries to keep the dog. In doing so, Oliver unfurls unspoken depths of feeling, resulting in a knockout of a performance that takes LUCY in a powerful direction that's riveting, heart-wrenching and raw. What begins as a slice-of-life character portrait transforms into a truly moving distillation of living with "quiet desperation," and how silent pain, sadness and loneliness build up into depression -- a process so incremental that its bearer doesn't even realize what it is or what is happening. Watching James confront himself, perhaps for the first time, resonates in its evocation of a difficult truth: we all carry burdens of strain and stress, and facing that reality with honesty is keenly painful. But it may be the first necessary step to move out of the shadows, towards something bigger and better.

Powerful short... Been there, rather recently even. Stuck in a downward spiral, failing relationship, lack of friends, risk of losing the roof over my head and a job that ate me alive. Then I met someone who opened my eyes. I didn't realize the path I was on until that someone got me to wake up. So obviously this short film hit really different and it's played pretty darn well.

I know that guy well. I have a Lucy, too. My Lucy's not a dog, though, but a cat, and her name's Nu. She had a brother who ran away a few weeks ago after I had to move house and died under a storm water drain that collapsed on him before I was able to find him. The worst months are those when I run out of cat food.
That actor must've known that guy really well, too. The way he portrayed him reduced me to a glistening, soggy pile of rags, blanket and mucus.
I'm sure there are a lot of people like that. The way we are makes it hard to find one another. This is an important little film. It's like a beacon of light in a way.

I was touched and wanted to give the man a hug and see how I could help him. The dog was beautiful and in need of help also. We truly need one another to help us deal with our emotional and financial challenges. I did appreciate how the man attempted to help others in spite of his excruciating pain. Heart wrenching. Truly one of the very best short films I've ever seen (and I've seen about a thousand of them). Loneliness, isolation and marginalization seem to be an American institution. You don't need to "tough it out". There are people who want to hear your story, who want to help. Let this film be an inspiration to seek them out when you need them, or to make yourself available to be one when you don't.

Thank you so much, Mojean. Thank you for weaving the narrative of loneliness through different species. Connection is an emotional need. It is not optional - it is essential. And this is not just true for humans - as much as we like to set ourselves apart like we are superior. We all need one another - and that includes other species. Thank you for showing a man weep. It is the realest thing there is. Much love everyone. Love yourselves, and love those around you, while we can.

😢🐶 My best buddy is not able to jump in & out of the car any more & I haven’t been able to afford to get him a ramp so I can still take him on drives. He’s too big & heavy to just lift in & out of the car & it hurts his arthritis unfortunately. I miss our drives together. I put big fat cushions between the backseat & the centre console & his seatbelt harness lets him sit resting his front legs on the console. Although he used to brace himself on the passenger seat so he could hold himself with his head pressed up against my arm & I’d spend most of the drive kissing his big super velvety soft flurpy ears. I hope you get many many many more years of car rides with your best buddy 🤗🐶

The landlord wrote and directed this. I love when directors go ahead and give themselves the role of the jerk; shows a lack of ego.
Over-all, very well-executed, shot and acted.
I have a question for Mojean: Was the scene where he yelled at the dog shot last? Otherwise, I feel like the actor would maybe lose the animal's trust. Just curious.

No James and the Chombly/Lucy lived together for the pre-production and duration of the shoot. Casting Lucy was probably the hardest aspect of the film, we worked with animal human society also to make sure Chombly/Lucy was always protected.
      Thank you again.

I've been in that darkest of moments I drove my car to a remote wood, I then began to swallow a bottle of pills, while the engine via a vacuum pipe fed monoxide fumes through the window, knowing it would soon be over. But then a strange thing happened, two deer a doe & its fawn walked alongside & looked in at me. It's at this point I just broke down crying. So I opened the all the doors, to clear the car of fumes. Then I found the car was struck in mud, I couldn't shift it. Unexpectedly a man came walking along. He saw I was having problems, so he packed the wheels with dry grass & sticks to give traction. I praised his good deeds, & asked him if he'd like a lift. He said "no" but said to look after myself & try to stay more positive.

I live in a rural area so I was confused at first about why he was collecting scooters from all over the city. Apparently there are cities where people can rent them, and when they're through with them they just abandon them. I say all of this because the main character's depression was probably exacerbated by his thankless job. This short was brilliant. The actors both human and canine were exceptional.
