  • After some difficulties with the test computer with a bad power supply and some other issues with data transfer, I had to retry doing my final demo of the Miniscribe 8051A drive.
This early IDE model was one of Miniscribe's last hard drive products before going bankrupt and being bought out by Maxtor. This is one of the few drives that was also manufactured by Maxtor after the merger.
I am told that this model differs from most voice coil drives in that the magnet moves instead of the coils moving.
The drive with the 5.25 adaptor is the one that I am keeping and has no bad sectors.
The one without the frame is going to a new owner locally that needs this exact model for a bios specific restoration.
    Cylinders: 745 Heads: 4 Sectors: 28
    Translation supported
    Cylinders: 981 Heads: 5 Sectors: 17
    Manufactured late 1990
    Start DOS 6.22
Load Windows 3.1 (skipped on the second one)
Norton Disk doctor to show the sector map
Norton System info for a quick benchmark.

So pleasing listening to these old drives run! Especially two in really amazing functional condition! The bad sectors on the one you are selling is not bad at all for a drive that old really. Thanks for showing these drives off in the video, I appreciate it. Also is that a NEC drive on the top left of the Logicom computer? I'm rather curious : ))

They worked better than the Quantum Trailblazer 850 and NEC D3725 that had rows of bad blocks.

@@matthewsvideos8235 I'm not sure what you expected from the Quantum Trailblazer hahaha. The Quantum Trailblazer and Pioneer drives were budget drives from the time, and sadly it shows especially now. The media is horrendous on them all these years later sadly, a ton of them either have died or are filled with bad sectors just like yours, so it is a miracle to find one in working condition now with no bad spots. That really is a shame, they sound pretty nice. The NEC though? I am sad and shocked at the same time, the poor thing, NEC really did make some nice drives and the media quality seemed really good, shame that one didn't make it : ((

@@cdos9186 I almost found the miracle drive. I found my second 850MB Trailblazer and it passed a surface test with only one bad block near the end.

@@cdos9186 I have one 850 working with one bad block that I am grouping together for the group of 500MB+ to 3GB. Trying to get a variety of manufacturers that no longer make drives.
