- Michael Raso gives an overview of the 1959 Canon Reflex Zoom 8 8mm movie camera.
This affordable vintage camera is available on eBay and fresh, new Double 8mm film is available at filmphotograph...
I had just bought a roll of 8mm color slide 100D and this model of camera about a week before the last two videos uploaded and was a little concerned with the results. But now after seeing both videos I’m confident in saying the results are going to look excellent when they come back.
You guys rock per usual.
how'd they look?
Hi!! I recently just bought this camera from a thrift store and I was using your video to test it out. My motor and everything works but when I try to push the pressure plate the film doesn’t move. I cranked the motor and held down the shutter and it looks like the film sprocket holes aren’t properly attached to the camera but I’ve pushed it in like you’ve shown in your video. When I push the shutter and hold the film down with my finger the film takes. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong or what’s up with the camera?!
Difficult to guess without seeing. You can send me an email with a short video attached. Michael@FilmPhotographyProject.com
picked this up tonight at a thrift store for $16. hoping i can shoot a no-budget film with this soon - thanks for the guide!
When I do the test with no roll on, to see if it’s working, it doesn’t do anything… 😢 Is that normal? Thank you so much!!! ❤
No, that means your camera's motor is not working. (Did you wind it up before pressing the shutter button?)
I just picked up this camera from an estate sale, very excited! Now that I've got it home I've noticed the hand crank to wind the film is stuck -- won't rotate in the direction to be wound but turns freely in the opposite direction. Any tips on how to troubleshoot this issue?
The camera comes with a lock built in. I don't own this camera but I'd imagine that it has something to do with the lock.

Here's a link to the manual. On page 4 it shows the position of the lock. Rotate the dial clockwise so that the red mark is hidden. This is explained on the bottom of page 15 of the manual.
My guess is the camera is locked, spring fully wound and so you can't wind it any further.
This is just a guess. Hopefully it helps if you haven't already fixed it
I’m a bit unsure of how you shoot on both sides, because it looks like you shot on the same side?
Hi. Please watch the video. Here is the part where I "FLIP" the film and shoot Side 2 - ruclips.net/video/Im8Te10AUlU/видео.htmlsi=6Rc6Q2hXfs67_eAh&t=588
What’s a good modern battery that can be used for the meter?
None - the selenium meter doesn't take a battery.
I can see the quality of the camera/lens and film. Another great shew!
I usually don't "entomb" my film unless I'm shooting dracula film
I wanted to eat pizza!
Rugged looking camera. Shows a little evolution toward the Scopic
Didn't make the connection to the Scoopic! I see it now!! - Mike
It "was" $18. After this video, I am sure people will start raising prices.
I just bought one of these at an antique store and I was convinced it didn’t work. Thank god for this video I figured it out!! Will he ordering film and processing it through you guys im so excited to actually get to use it
Fantastic! Clear and short, giving sufficient information to inspire. DG New Forrest U.K.
I've got the very same model and id a magnificent standard 8 camera. Some of my film videos have been shot with this one. Pity I don't have the pistol grip.
Cool camera to shoot standard 8 film with I still have the canon zoom 8 we used to record our teenage years in the 1970's. Great video.
where is the best place to find film for this camera?
filmphotographystore.com/collections/movie-film/double-8
Excellent camera, fabulous lens. I have shot dozens of films with a camera like this, love it !
Excellent video, can I use in thos camera Fomapan R double8. Length: 2 x 10 meter / 2 x 33 ft. Thank you
Yes. This is a better option - filmphotographystore.com/collections/movie-film/products/regular-8-film-fpp-cine8-bw-50-reversal-film-double-8
Does it work with super 8 film?
Hi, No, the Canon Reflex Zoom 8 takes Double 8 roll film. Super 8 is in a cartridge - won't fit.
Got this camera with all the accessories (including bag, light meter, dummy roll of Kodachrome. (For testing purposes) and hand trigger for a whopping $18. You don’t get deals like that on eBay often!
Wonderful find!
@@FilmPhotographyProject I got the camera! I tested the old Kodachrome spool in it. It functions excellently, I got the following: the camera, the bag for the camera, the grip for the camera, the case for the grip, the light meter (a Bertram Biwi Super), the cable release, a timer, filters, a dummy Kodachrome roll that expired in 1978, the manuals for everything, some brochure about Okinawa, a plastic cover for the light meter on the camera, something I’m not sure what it is in a film canister, and a nice bag to carry it all! One of the best eBay deals I’ve got in a LOOONG time!
Great Video as usual Michael. Out of curiosity have you guys ever use any of these reflex cameras for stop motion animation?
So many of the cameras have a cable release port for single frame use - I've never used it. Worthy project. - Mike
I have a question i have the same and didnt buy the films yet (double 8mm) and when i try it only one of the circles in which we put the film turn is it normal or not please answer me i am new in the world of photography
Hi, can you rewrite the question? Not sure what you are asking? (If you like, your can send an email with pics of the issue - Michael@FilmPhotographyProject.com)
I believe he's saying that only one of the rotating shafts the spools go on turns when the camera runs. I'll have to check but pretty sure the take-up spool shaft is the only one you need turning. The film is simply rolled off the supply shaft by the pulling of the sprocket teeth. Should be okay in my book 👍
Amazing.
