- Steve Bailey, Hadrian Feraud and David Haynes showing the kids how it's done at NAMM 2012!
From stage, we had a split snake, one tail going to FOH, and the other going to us for the broadcast. 2 fully independent mixes.
At FOH, Jonathan was controlling the FOH mix, the monitors, and he was multi-track recording the performances using Studio One 2.0. He could've used our Capture software, but was using Studio One, so we could demonstrate the VSL and Q-mix control at the show. Some of the artists were controlling their respective monitor mixes via the Q-Mix app, and also, Rodney was demonstrating that we could control the entire mixer with the iPad using Virtual Studio Live.
On my board, I was mixing as if I was doing my own FOH mix, and then outputting a L/R Stereo feed to your video equipment. The only difference at my board is that I had the master outs of the FOH board coming into lines 7 & 8, so if Jonathan did anything out front on his board, where the audio from his demo needed to be heard, I'd be able to capture it. We ended up not using that feature, but it was there if we needed. I used compression and EQ from the Fat Channel on nearly every channel. I didn't need gates, because all the instruments were DI'd, with Chris LeBlanc using an original Line6 POD before the DI for his guitar tones. For effects, I used a room reverb on bus A of the Studio Live 24.4.2, and on bus B, I used a ping-pong delay, and used Tap Tempo to set the delay times for each song. Lastly, I used a bit of compression on the Master Outputs, to smooth any rough spots, and to allow us to get more volume and clarity for the broadcast, without clipping.
Usually I don't listen to that kind of stuff but I must admit this video is great, period.
Great musicians with technique, and soul, everything is here.
A lot to practice, for us ...
i don't even remember a video where his intonation was nearly good.
man I have lots of respect for Steve Bailey but that intonation is totally atrocious
Sometimes it's just hard to watch Bailey, like he struggles too much with his 6 string fretless and that weird right hand technique, always out of tune
+eat a peach yes, sometimes is hard to listen to, i´ve not seen yet a performance by him that he plays nice frames, i don´t know what is he doing.
Jaco made a generation of bassplayers want to pick up the fretless because he played great musical and challenging stuff and was always in tune.
Steve Bailey...not so much
+gimmeagig He's playing a 6strings bass, not Jaco, idiot!!! What Steve is doing is technically harder than what was doing Jaco, on certain aspects of the bass of course. Watch his video with Victor Wooten, bass extreme, you're gonna understand!
+Lucien Henry really?? Jaco was a pionner on bass and you think steve stuff is better omg!! not the same definition of talent!!Bailey sound awful and untune and so in many video !!
davebuzz79 i dont say its better, but he tries to play hardcore stuff, and sometimes it doesnt sound good because of the difficulties to play it. I'm not sure you are aware of the technic and skills needed to play a 6strings fretless bass.... And of course Jaco is the greatest, there is no doubt about it!!
yep i agree with you now buddy !!
applause to the electric drummer!!
After browsing RUclips for hours, I'm yet to watch a colab/jam video where Steve Bailey sounds good...
Song is "Well You Needn't" by Thelonious Monk if anybody wants to know
steve Bailey Bass sounds Drunk sluuuuuring LOL
That some posting comments hear a fake contest between Steve and Hadrien cracks me up. I just hear three guys jamming, having fun, and sounding great. I guess I am lucky that I get to play with guys who are about the music and not some sort of competition thing.
I like how all the people going on about how Hadrien is so much better than Steve forget that Hadrien is having fun here with a bassist who I am sure he has plenty of respect for.
Steve....., that sounds realy bad..., wow
one of the wackest bass solos I ve done...lol
lol that has nothing to do with it!! his intonation is just really out of tune.
Don't play fretless unless you have perfect intonation.
+Lars Johansson yeah but how to achieve "perfect intonation" without playing on a fretless bass? Can't be afraid to take risks in life.
Cyborg Rabbit You start with playing fretted.
Lars Johansson idk man, that comes from the whole dogmatic approach to music which I find so creatively stifling. He sounds fine in 90% of his performances.
So the other 10 %? Tell that to an upright player. If you like it: keep on listening.
People are too uptight. Play what you want to, how you want to. This wasn't one of his better performances, but a lot of the microtones were intentional.
Them 3 finger drone-note runs.....damn.
Steve and his fretless is such a waste of time. He should go back to a fretted bass instead of shucking on the fretless.
I studied bass from Steve in Denton Texas for a few months he's a great player but now seems to be a one trick pony. Still think if him as a big influence and a mega innovator but...
cmon people listen to this, it's amazing. Both players are on top of their efforts, needless to say the heavy criticism of Steve Bailey is coming from those who are listening for mistakes rather than for the music.
+Cyborg Rabbit Not necessarily true. I'm a big fan of Steve's..you don't need to be listening hard for mistakes to hear that the notes are just not in tune. Plain and simple. More a quirk of the fretless I guess. This is not the first video that is like this either. Beautiful player though, don't get me wrong, he is a brilliant musician. Fretless is a massive challenge, let alone with the chords Steve does ;)
Comments about Steve Bailey being bad are absolutely cringe worthy! What cloud are these people living on, having the nerve to put down one of the greatest bass player on Earth? Do you understand that there is no level above Steve Bailey?
steve is no where to find on youtube with a band ,,,like the steve bailey band
Seems they are all recorded. Any chance to have these (multitrack or otherwise) records? It would be great for solo transcribing practice!
Steve Bailey haters got nothing.Except jealousy.
andre magnuson They probably have better intonation too...
Can we stop talking about how bad Steve's playing is and start talking about how bad his tone is? Good god.
i keep watching this for hadrien. All who defend bailey here are missing some critical points. You can scoarch a fretless with great tone and intonation...jaco, gary willis, alain caron, pino palladino, mick karn..need i keep going?. bailey has no cool feel to any of his runs. chromatics are not the key to cool, and neither is some half ass arpeggiating...what are those notes anyways????? little half steps on the return up to variate a repeated run dont constitute"tasty lines". Bailey stinks!!
and Hadrien on this video is far higher from S Bailey ..; just my opinion
is it just me or is steve off a little in the beginning
sorry but the fretless bass just sounds so fucking bad
man, hadrien totally eats baiely's lunch...you can see steve's inication of this by his expression at the end of the vid. Bailey's left hand note selection doesnt even compare.......truthjfully it never has...watch victor eat his lunch as well in the bass extremes stuff....
Ohh Hadrien, freaking great solos!
I agree, you aren't going to accomplish much by proving that you are a better bass player than Steve Bailey. Some little school called "Berklee College of Music" just named Steve as the Chair of the Bass Department. Maybe you should send them your resume?
Just amazing, this is groove.
Bailey , out of tune ...
Fretless got spanked
its not really showing off... they're just jamming and having fun... and in regard to the drum machine that's what he uses as opposed to a drum set... but other than that if you can find room for a kit on that stage then by all means
Mm. I don't see it as very cool thing. They are showing off. Comparing dicks (sorry). m? a drum machine? Why? smells like a money. But they're good.
steves tuning is always off thank god harden was there
This video demonstrates that Bailey is far behind Feraud ... no creativity and the feeling of a bulldozer in a field of wheat in summer..
Who is holding the camera? Zooming in bassplayers when there's drumsolo! I thought it was musicians on that "Messe"
Great Sound Guys, I know there's no vocals on this vid. but was the Smaart Spectra™ Spectrograph on the Studiolive used to set up the FOH? If so is there going to be a video showing it in action?
Well said sir, I really feel the same. Ok, he is good, he knows what he's doing and everything and on a 6 string fretless bass that deserves respect, but musically speaking...pretty damn weak.
If you want perfect intonation, play a fretted. Fretless instruments are for fluid intonation, not restricted to 12-ET.
Hadrien's style on this is incredible - fantastic tones, from the percussive muted style to the jazz guitar styled chords. Very impressive, far more so than the fret-wankery of the gospel chops dvd
ha! this is the first Namm video i've ever seen without an annoying distortion sound from the camera mic... THANK YOU!
i have seen him live in Nashville, and I have got to say, HE IS AMAZING. I didn't think he was that great, but once you see him play live it changes your perspective on bass!
oh gosh.. i'm getting all bothered
Love it!
what's drum module he's using? sound so great guys, great job!
Arg, I know this song but I forgot its title ! Can someone please tell me the name of that tune ?
After what he does at 1:53 ~ 2:10, if you still think he has intonation issues, you are deaf.
0:30 sounds like it's from a Rareware game on the N64 :D
I don't see how hadrien can play like that it is very uncomfortable.
is there something on youtube .like the steve bailey band ..i cant find nothing at all
Song=well you needn't by thelonious monk!!!!! gotta love monk baby boY
8:12 look at hadrien... Is there someone in the crowd that´s pissing off?
Straordinari.... ma un po' di compressione in meno sarebbe stato più piacevole.
Come on Hadrien rsrs ... Did you forgot the end kkkk ... I'm your fan.
Fretlessw are never in tune, you have to find it.
You should post a vid to show us how it should be done!
Fretless are never in tune, you have to find it.
Once again. Post a video and show us how it's done!
I'd like to watch Hadrien, Patitucci and Berlin together, improvising. Just because the three are such virtuosos on speed, it'd be cool to watch them. But kudos to Bailey, such a master too.
and Fredrico Malaman yikes!!!
Two South Carolina Musicians Killin It! Nice Guys!
Hadrien is such a technical player.
For once in the Namm , Sound is really good ...
i like it. it reminds me of video game music.
It's because the lines don't really do anything for you. You don't need them at all for reference since the dots are still on the side. Also, his intonation is amazing. You and your friend there must not have working ears.
Steve's playing is outstanding, you clearly either have no idea what you're talking about or you own a fretless and broke a few fingers trying to best him.
Two South carolina Musicians Killin It!
well you needn't by thelonious monk
where is the steve bailey band on youtube
This is what bass playing is all about.
they needed to bring up Steve Bailey!!!
LOL at hadriens looks to the drummer
I barely hear Bailey! I dare you!
What bass is Hadrien playing??
Had can really out play anyone!
oh willy, it's gonna be ok.
sorry David haynes :-)
@Moggy624 I will DM you a link to our Smaart video! It was not used for this performance...
how is it lame? :/
double bass technique for his left hand awesome
Pocket
Yes.
show.
why?
thanks!
\o/
Steve's style is very different. He uses a lot of chromatic melodies, and penatonic-like scales for his music. He mixes minor and majors, and all doing this on a fretless. It's not his intonation, it's his style. I'm a huge Steve Bailey fan. He's a great bassist, and his style is great.
two very different styles, it's not like rap battle it's an interpretation on a groove using different techniques, there is no winner or loser, both are valid. as good as it gets musically
I think they're both untuned. But these dudes are great bass players.
This is just magical. I love me some Bailey's.
With Steve Bailey pitch is of relative importance as compared with the importance of having as many strings as possible and as little control over them with physical mediating devices such as Frets!
OMG Bailey!
Intonation 3/10
Musicality 1/10
Tone 2/10 (On a Warwick!)
He is just playing notes randomly... carelessly...
