Dylan likes Jimi's version of Watchtower so much, he started using THAT version in his own shows. The amazing part is that it WAS Jimi's biggest US hit - but only hit #20 while he was alive.
Bob Dylan is a TERRIBLE singer, but his songwriting skills are legendary. None of his songs got nearly as big when he sang them as they did when covered.
@@scottlemiere2024 I'd be more inclined to call Dylan a "poor performer", not terrible. He DID do a good job on a couple of his efforts - but the covers of his songs DO tend to be better-to-OMG THAT'S INSANELY BETTER. His version of "Lay Lady Lay" is a prime example of Dylan singing fairly well (but in a style he only used on one album).
Harry Nilsson, “Without You” by Badfinger Three Dog Night, “One” By Harry Nilsson Badfinger, “Come And Get It” by Paul McCartney Many of Led Zeppelin’s biggest songs were covers, but without giving proper credit. Tons of ‘80s hits were also covers: Sinead O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2U” by Prince Cyndi Lauper, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” Naked Eyes, “Always Something There To Remind Me” Kim Carnes, “Betty Davis Eyes” And heck, ALL of Elvis Presley’s hits were covers!
I remember so many of these from being a kid and listening to them because my parents listened to them around the house. Thank you for the memories again.
Honorable mention; early in their career, a Quartet of lads from Liverpool, England had a huge hit record with their cover of the Isley Brothers song, Twist And Shout.
After watching this list, there were a few that were missed. Missed ones were: "Blue Monday" by Orgy. (New Order) "There She Goes" by Sixpence None the Richer. (The La's) "Lean On Me" by Club Nouveau. (Bill Withers)
I would add The Lemonheads with the cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson and Natalie Imbruglia with Torn (a song originally released with a lot less success by a band named Ednaswap)
Naked Eyes’ signature song ‘Always Something There to Remind Me’ is a cover of a Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition that had been recorded by several artists. The first version of that tune to hit the Top 40 was R.B Greaves’ which peaked at #27 in 1970.
I could do 100 of these. Save Ferris, Bananarama, Fugees, Bow Wow Wow, Lemonheads, Sinead, Natalie Imbruglia, Santana, Aretha, maybe Marvin Gaye, Gary Jules, Michael Damien, Sixpence None The Richer, Thelma Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Toni Basil, ok I'm tired now lol
I know disturbed stands on their own but they covered a ton of songs. Their cover of phil Collins land of confusion is great. Their lead singer is on record saying they did that because when they started out they did small shows and played covers because people knew those songs. Then they would pepper in their own stuff to let people know they were they're own band too. Brilliant strategy in my opinion
the funniest part about quiet riot is that they absolutely did not want record that song. so much so that they tried to sabotage the recording of the song but it turned into their biggest hit lol.
Honorable Mention: Lacuna Coil with their cover of Enjoy the Silence. However, their original material (Heaven’s A Lie, Swamped, Our Truth) is much better than their covers imho
I listen to Lacuna every once in a while, they were staples in my playlists in high school. I don't particularly remember Enjoy the Silence. Guess I'm not that big of a fan😅
You forgot to mention that Manfred Mann's biggest hit of the Sixties was, yet again, a cover. I'm referring to "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", which was originally recorded by The Exciters ("Tell Him").
Word Up by Scottish rock band Gun, was originally an 80s hit for Cameo. Because The Night by Patti Smith (original by Bruce Springsteen). Don't Turn Around by UK Reggae band Aswad (original Tina Turner).
Because The Night was written by Springsteen and Smith together. However, you could use that song for the 10,000 Maniacs because that was their only hit and the only song for which they're known and I don't think it was ever a hit for Patti.
Metallica's version of Whiskey in a Jar is so much better than Thin Lizzy's. Disturbed did an amazing rendition of Simon & Garfunkle's Sound of Silence. Five Finger Death Punch also did a great job of their cover of House of the Rising Sun and Bad Company. I think that you might need to do a part 2.
Two of Nazareth's biggest songs were covers: "Love Hurts" and Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight." Joni was so amused that a hard rock band did one of her songs that when she played it live, she took to introducing like this "This is a Nazareth song." Also not a hit or anything but check out Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" via Celtic Frost.
While not a hit, another good cover is Diamonds and Rust by Judas Priest, originally done by Joan Baez. To tie it in with this video however, Joan's song was supposedly about Bob Dylan.
@@total2blue I thought about that one too (I'm also partial to MegaDeth's version of 'These Boots are Made for Walking) and yes it's her breakup song to Dylan.
I didn’t even know The Ataris’s version was a cover until earlier this year when I randomly heard the original! Grew up with the cover version and assumed it was the og!
Missing some. Reba MaEntire Fancy and Night the Lights went out in Georgia. Elvis did not want to do Hound Dog, because it was done in the jazz/blues. I say I am a big JOAN JETT fan of her original and covers.
One song everyone forgets is a cover is _Black Magic Woman._ It was written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac and then made famous a year or two later by Santana.
Yes, I've ever heard that song before. GTA fans must get pissed off with that song, especially since Vice City was the centrepiece of the upcoming GTA 6.
The Animals learned "House Of The Rising Sun" from Bob Dylan's 1962 self-titled debut album (they also covered the track "Baby Let Me Follow You Down.) Dylan learned it from Joan Baez, who had recorded it on her 1960 self-titled debut album. incidentally, the song would be featured on the US version of The Animals' 1964 self-titled debut album.
I came here for Orgy with their cover of Blue Monday and it doesn’t even get an HM, seriously? 🤣 That song that they didn’t even write was huge during the 90’s, I thought for sure it was a lock to be on here.
there was a time in a Pre-Dylan world when some people had a job as songwriter and some people had a job as singer (a song interpreter) - this is the history of Popular Music from before Rudy Vallee through Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley - nearly everything they recorded was "cover songs" either already established or written specifically for them.
For non-hair metal fans, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" may be more familiar. But "Rock Me" is way better. Another great Springsteen cover by them is "Spirits in the Night" it's almost as good.
Oh crap. So Tainted Love by Soft Cell was a cover? I'm gonna have to recheck my covers playlist. Pretty sure I have the Soft Cell and Marilyn Manson versions. But this is news to me
Sadly I can relate, my band uploaded a lot of music to Spotify but the only song that's consistantly getting listeners is a cover of another band, with lyrics just consisting of various swear words xD
Some times I think between the original and a cover my favorite depends on which I heard first. That said, the Red Red Wine cover for me was a favorite and the Animals House of the Rising Sun.
