This is such a good series. Really enjoyed seeing that get tidied up. I know some would strive to remove every last bit of that mottled effect on the steel but its on so much of the old tools I've bought, seeing it makes me feel cosy!
Thanks Paul. I'm looking forward to using it and giving it the right sort of tasks. It won't be for thin pieces of wood because of the ware to the sole. But will it perform better on hard or soft woods? We will see.
Nice, I am always happy to learn from an experienced craftsman's method of work. The Sandflex blocks I mentioned in the chat seem to be exactly the same as the Garyflex.
I think it's a 'thing' with planes. Especially the dearer ones. People spend the money but don't use them. Shame they don't keep the box and that would put the second hand market price higher..but they don't usually. You'll notice from the first video on this plane that my 'new one' is still in the box. Well, that's just incase I decided to sell it. Keep the boxes guys 👍👍👍
I've not done it yet. A very busy workshop put a stop to it. I will get one more done before Christmas. It's not easy adding RUclips to your workload. I'll definitely do it because it's very nearly done. Just need to camber the Iron, lap the sole and have some fun trying it out on different woods.
@@twcmaker completely understand I worked as a luthier for a small custom shop for 7 years and trying to fit filming, and editing into the schedule was a challenge. I just received one of these planes along with the 701p for free but they need some work so found this video series very interesting.
I was so smitten by the 711 that I bought one. Nominally used, but like new. I looked for trapped shavings, and found a bit around the throat adjster, so cleaned that out. The worst part was the glossy factory finish, which appeared to be oversprayed varnish. I’m cleaning that off and will refinish with boiled linseed oil and paste wax Am eager to see your modifications.
Hi Stu. You bought one after watching my video or a while ago? Ahh that varnish... At some point it will have to go. And the mods (after getting it set up & working) will be very cool. I think it'll be very cool.
@@twcmaker After watching the first video in this series. I was planning to purchase a wooden smoother, and the mechanism in this one intrigued me to the point that I decided to look for one of these. I found one that appeared to be a good deal and snapped it up.

Thanks James. There is a warmth in knowing it was in a worse state and it's been recovered, knowing that if anything were to happen it could quite easily be rescued again. And it's not been much if an expense it's not 'shiny new precious'. Where the only way forward is ware, pantina and possibly harm. I prefer this way.
Nice job I love the garyflex blocks .
They are great. I've not bought the set yet... But find the Grey seems to do everything I need 👍
Thanks!
Thank you 👍

Interesting video. I'd love to see it perform when sharpened.
Thanks Paul.

Thank you. Ahh.. Now I know what Sandflex is. Thank you
@@twcmaker Most of the ECEs I got off ebay were just like this - they were slightly used and had never been sharpened.

Did you ever do a final video of the restoration?

I'll try to do something in the next week. Then allow a week (to make and find time) for edit.
Lock washer😀
What about it? This was 8 months ago. I'll need a reminder 😂
You asked what it was called
@jimbo2629 Ohhh.. 😂
The actual professional name for That little round part is called “grippy spotty washer thing”. So you were correct.
Ahh that bit. Well yes, of course it is 😂
