13:56 I liked this part. They were trying to keep their composure even though they knew something was wrong. The last thing you want to do in a situation you realize is out of your control is lose control of yourself

Weird coincidence... when the brother said 'Eureka', at that exact moment, I was looking at the words Eureka on my stick vacuum, which is tucked in the corner across from me. Was staring off into space and that's where my eyes landed.

You almost got it right lad but it's actually your.
A way you can tell the difference is remembering you're is basically "you are".
And "thank you for you are stories" doesnt make sense.
Or "this book is yours" or "this book is you are(you're)"

I like the story but I disagree with the overdone vampire thing and would say that sexy vampires are overdone. Now the vampire as mindless, out of control, monsters aren't done often enough.
Sure everyone knows the popculture weaknesses... but that doesn't make them anyless monstrous or terrifying when you run into one at 1 in the morning and it's herding you into an unlit building, then stalking you until you see dawn's light on the horizon only for it to deliver the coup de grace just when you think you're safe. 🧛🏼

I wouldn't say Eldritch is overdone, just difficult to do well. Human words aren't adequate to describe or express cosmic horror.
Personally, I'd love to see someone take the concepts from Doyle's 'The Horror of the Heights' and make something more of that.

Thinking back to those lovecraft stories i've read, it strikes me that the moments of actual, in-your-face horror were generally few and far between. They're a culmination, while the meat of the story consists of a slow build. It's mostly lore, horrifying suggestions, building dread, all foreshadowing the inevitable catastrophy.
I mean, Rats in the Walls, At the Mountains of Madness, Charles Dexter Ward, the one about the monkey grandma, The Colour Out of Space, Innsmouth, Pickman's Model, The Outsider, Call of Cthulhu... even stuff like The Festival and The Shadow out of Time, all follow this formula in their own ways.
It's not just "blahh unexplainable, blahh i'm going insane" all the way through. Actually, all of these stories take time to give the reader suggestions of what the creature actually is. It's ironic that cosmic horror has the reputation that it does, since in pretty much every lovecraft story, he goes to great lengths to give the reader a lot of information (incomplete as it may tend to be) about what the creature or entity actually is, so that when we get to the reveal/s, it's all the more horrifying when we connect those dots in full.

@@anonymouseovermouse1960 I think The Dunwich Horror did a decent job of describing something that would have been rather in-your-face disturbing. The Shadow Over Innsmouth, even though he ultimately chooses to join them, had its indescribables. The Thing On the Doorstep is one of my favorites. There are other authors that really took that concept and, I think, made it even more unsettling.
The monkey grandma? I'm drawing a blank.

3:01, I like his words so far. When I type fan fictions, I try not to go into detail about plans and just try to type. Unfortunately, I get to feeling like a little kid combined with a perfectionist and end up making an unoriginal mess. Hence why I try to keep them to myself.

Btw, I don't believe the true essence of horror is no control. I can't say what could be, and I refuse to dwell up on it. But if you believe this story, then you should read up on the mental illness diagnosis of addiction. ( yes ,addiction is now legally labeled a mental illness I'm the United States. )
It's the only illness that thinks for itself ,and talks back to you , assuring you ( denial) that you couldn't possibly be an addict. You can stop drinking anytime you wanted.
What happens to cause the onset of the symptoms of this disease is putting any substances inside ones body, or the act of habit like betting on one game of poker. That's true real life no control for you.
I have my own theory as to what brings up on this phenomenon, and why some are predisposed and others not.

I empathise with the setup dilemma, but 5 minutes in and the pretentiousness of the vocabulary is grating on me. It's far too much and too inconsistent for a first-person account of a modern amateur writer. Tone it down a bit and make it a bit more natural.

There's a few stories which I can't get into because it feels like the author has the thesaurus right next to them, but the stories are supposed to sound more like natural and spoken so it's off putting
Edit: I just finished the story and didn't have the problem this time though
