I got a 6700xt late in 2022. It has been fantastic so far but I think the 7700xt is a worthy succesor. I don't think it's a big enough step up for me to upgrade now though but maybe next gen I will... I also think the 6700xt is ok for my purposes (1080p) so don't really need the upgrade yet. I might upgrade my cpu before I upgrade my gpu.

In Starfield using my 6800, I did have to use a bit of FSR2 to maintain over 60fps in all situations @ 1440p, but I was surprised how good it looked, as long as you keep it at 70%+ resolution scale. I was able to tweak settings to the point where it looks as good as high/ultra mix but performs better than medium, and you can barely tell it's not native. Outdoors I'm getting 70+ fps and 120+ fps indoors. There are some great graphics mods on nexusmods too so don't think you can't run Starfield, try it out because even on the steam deck it's playable now.

The best choices right now, if you have the money, from slightly worse to slightly better, are 6800XT, 7800XT, or 69(5)0XT.
6800XT may be as fast as 7800XT on average after tuning, but it eats up a bit more power, which may be important depending on where you live.
7800XT is great under current circumstaces: it takes less watts than 6800XT, supports AntiLag+, and has Hyper-RX in one click instead of having to enable each feature individually in control panel.
6900XT and 6950XT are a bit faster than 7800XT, although they require a bit more power too, but if you can find those at around $500~$550, it would be the best choice - in the future, given the state of current AAA optimization, those extra +7~10% extra performance may come in handy at having locked and stable 60 or 30 FPS, depending on the title.
As for other decent-performance value options, 7700XT is just not worth the savings compared to buying a 7800XT, unless the gap is much larger in your local stores. 6700XT is a bit slow, it definitely won't let you use same graphics settings, but it's also cheaper quite a bit, so as a value option it definitely may be great depending on your needs and budget. 6800 non-XT is just meh, IMO. Unless you are lucky to get a great deal in pricing department, it's the same versus 6800XT as 7700XT vs. 7800XT.

As the fps difference and power draw not being so large, if at all, I'd rather have the extra VRAM. It's been shown that the additional VRAM is more important in certain game and I've noticed in my own playthroughs of heavily modded Skyrim, that the 16GB versus 12GB makes a difference in how fast and smooth the transitions are for textures. I had waited for the 7700XT to come out, but it took too long and when it did get leaked with only 12GB, that was the final straw. I bought a 6800XT and I'm very happy with the performance along with the 16GB VRAM. It's a pitty AMD didn't launch a 5800 XT or 5900 XT or 5850 XT so it will be more confusing to choose a card to buy... at least we have RTX 20 and RTX 30 and RTX 40 equivalents also, new and used... not as many option like the 20 in the perfromance tier of the PS5/1080 Ti/4060... naming could be also improved also by the 7700 XT being the 7800 XT - 1/2 XT or 7750 XT, and the 7800 XT being the 7800 or the 7770 XT... they need more numbers or letter if they are so close in perfromance... clearly the power scaling perfromance graph of the Navi 32 gpus is an interesting topics to see how much OC room and efficiency it really is, to see if there is a justification to buy them over 7600 or 4060, and over 4070... 7900 XT at discounted USA prices with UV/UC is very impressive... a 7850 XT would fit clearly to match and outperfom the 4070 clearly in every aspect...

6700 XT is still the KING in terms of price/performance & power consumption.
Last Gen's 6800 (and UP) GPUs & the new 7000 series have serious power issues @ video playback (youtube, Netflix, video players etc.)
40+ W is stupidly HIGH & meaningless... and while 6700 XT consumes only 16W, the new 7700 XT doubles that power draw with a whooping 33W on "video playback"
AMD should solve that power draw issues @ video playback at least in the next 8000 series. No, I'm NOT UpGrading. I'll stay with RX 6700XT until the next gen.

The new AMD cards seem to be really decent performance-wise and viable options for new builds (7700XT the price has to go down a bit ofc). But with my 6700XT, pretty much the only card Im kinda hyped to upgrade to is Intels BMG-G10 battlemage if its what its expected to be. Imagine a 4080 lvl performance for half the price, it would be insane. But for now Im good and cant wait to see FSR 3.0 on my GPU, since AMD doesnt block their new upscaling tech from "older" cards like Nvidia does 😵‍💫

A decent 6800xt model or saving on a 6800. I dont play many aaa games and never at 4k, i like cool and quiet gpus.

The RX6800 is great... When I play Half Life Alyx with Ultra textures on my Reverb G2 (2600x2600 per eye at a locked 90Hz) the VRAM utilization is around 14.5GB. I can't even begin to express how happy I am that I chose a card with 16GB VRAM. Same with DCS. It utilizes over 14GB as well.... Since you have depth perception in VR, texture quality and resolution become far more important than silly things like RT. :) I couldn't care less about that stuff in its current state.
