Blink-182 isn't Blink-182 without Tom.. It sucks he isn't a part of it anymore but you know I'm extremely grateful for all the music they gave us when he was. Gotta be grateful for what we have.
It's like how Boxcar Racer is 2/3 of Blink but it was different and how Scott Raynor Blink is something different. Every part is equally as important as the rest of the parts.

I remember feeling mad at Tom when he left. I never gave him the light of day to hear his side of the story and never gave Angels and Airwaves a chance because I loved Blink 182 so much and I didn't want it to ever end. it took me around 12 years to finally give Angels and Airwaves a listen and warm up to Tom and respect his decision for leaving. It sucks that it went down like this, it really does. It's just like everybody else says though, be thankful for the time they existed and that special feeling we all get when we hear Blink 182 play in our cars or in our headphones. It's my favorite when I hear them on somebody else's playlist or the radio unexpectedly and just how fast my mood changes and how better my day gets for those 3 and a half minutes. I know I'm not the only one.

Watch the guitar video he did about recording and guitar tones, its called persuit of tone or something like that. Very little of it is actually about guitar stuff but it totally changed my opinion on him for the better.

I fucking appreciate mark and travis but man, tom was the real deal in blink182 :( maybe not the best of the best of the world but he was definitely something unique.
I never got a chance to see Blink when I was young. But this year, I had the lucky experience to see Blink 182 at Weekend 2 Coachella on the mainstage. To see a band who I have followed since I was a kid, I finally got a chance to see the band that influenced my childhood.
Stewie Griffin it’s easy to think that but it almost is never that way. Bands rarely get better and better and better... what we heard and experienced was their peak. Don’t torture yourself thinking what if, we got the magic.
I saw them on this tour and they still kicked ass. Obviously it'll never be as good as classic Tom but the way he was performing at the end Matt is definitely an improvement

i like that though he has certain feelings towards his prior bandmates he never outright talks bad about them. it's a temptation that many people fall prey too. i also like the way he speaks about it in general-the way his words flow and how his eye movements show he's trying to articulate his feelings best as possible really seal the deal for my respect for him. work and life balance is already hard as it is but how can you deny your family? you brought a little person into the world and how can you just leave them behind? i wouldn't be able to, ever
Tom was the voice of blink 182.... hearing his vocals, u knew what band it was and could already picture a music video for the song. His sound and personality can never be duplicated and blink really left a mark in that punk rock genre.... one group that I wished would have never gotten old. When they were writing and recording DED Tom worked for weeks on the EP. Travis showed up for an entire weekend to record then left. Mark showed up for a few days too. So its always been the same shit. Tom wanted to sit the guys down and make something progressive and grand while Travis and Mark just wanted to do the cheap easy fart joke shit. Bet if you ask Tom would he rather play 8 festivals and make millions of dollars to work on a super great album spending money instead of making it he would pick the songwriting. We know now that Mark and Travis are all about the money.

This whole situation about their break up seems really weird. Especially when it comes to BCR. Tom said multiple times that his project raised tensions between him and Mark due to Mark feeling betrayed, because he was 'the one left out, the odd man' as he was quoted saying. Which, in some ways, is quite understandable as BCR turned out to be very success and hyped at the time. Apparently they kind of overshadowed their main band and what if they would be continue making music and becoming more demanded and successful than Blink? So I kinda see where Mark was coming from, but I still find it quite interesting that Travis was never accused by Mark for being in BCR as well. So what's Marks opinion on that anyway? Travis never gave any comments about that situation neither, at least none that I know of. For Travis it kinda seems like a win-win situation anyway - He played in Blink, with BCR, with +44... It seems both singers knew what Travis brought to the table and none of them wanted him to leave that easily. Tom can be quite a nutcase too and is really weird at times, but I have a sense that he is not that much to blame for their original break up. He wanted to progress with the band, give them a more mature sound and trying to go in different directions. Which apparently is not in Marks or Travis interest that much. It kinda makes me wonder how they had been able to pull of such a great album as their self titled in the first place!? (Jerry Finn, anyone?) Judging from the records Mark and Travis made without Tom, it is really obvious that they want to stick to their pop-punky directions, while Tom is more curious about trying different things. BCR is proof of that, so are the more experimental tracks on ST, and starting from scratch with AVA. Though he kind of stuck with the AVA sound since their debut and might has tried too hard complementing it into the later Blink recordings. So I give you that. There's definitely a reason why you would have another band for another sound or direction. +44 and California didn't do that much for me for a number of reasons. There's some good ideas on them, but overall I think they are far away from reaching their full potential. But there's hope judging from some deluxe tracks off California. Overall I find Tom's material to have much more substance, though.
The other thing that upset Mark was that in addition to the success of Box Car Racer, Geffen offered Tom a pretty lucrative solo deal which would pull him away from blink entirely. He turned it down twice, which you think Mark would be happy about but he never mentioned it in interviews. BCR was never meant to be a full-fledged new band. Hell, even Travis admitted that BCR was never spoken about as a long term thing. I can get why Mark would be hurt about it, and maybe Tom should've been more direct about it but to give someone an ultimatum about work or their family is pretty bad. Also, Mark should've been more open to trying new ideas. Tom was already experimenting in TOYPAJ with songs like Stay Together for the Kids and Story of a Lonely Guy which are both much "heavier" than anything they'd written before. I honestly can't blame Tom for leaving one bit in 2005. 2015 is different, as Tom has stated many times he didn't want to leave a second time but found it "hard as hell to commit". Again, I think it came down to Mark making unreasonable demands of him because he wants to keep living the good ol' days.
@@DV-zv4ox agreed. Even the songs that Mark brought to the table on their s/t were rehashed and stale. You can tell which songs Tom wrote because they had a different and more dynamic feel. A lot of people miscontrue that with "weird", especially coming from a pop punk band but that album is probably my favorite Blink album just based off of Tom's enhanced songwriting. Even a lot of the newer AvA stuff are straight bangers.
Even if you look at now, with the new AVA material and new Blink, Tom has so much more artistic integrity and curiosity than Mark. Tom really brought out the best in Mark as a song writer
Back in 2011 I got to see Blink 182 live in Charlotte NC. They had a thing called “Boomer Loves B00-b-ies” where if you donated a certain amount of money to breast cancer awareness you could do a meet and greet with Tom! Me and a friend got to do it and Tom was super nice but you could tell he was a tad introverted and preferred one on one conversations and not to be swamped. We got a cool poster that he signed for us too. BUT something about the show felt strange. It just didn’t seem like their hearts were in it. They barely interacted on stage. I wasn’t surprised when the band broke up again soon after. Now for the good news: these new songs are so killer. Not only that but it looks like they are genuinely having fun again and enjoying being together. And I truly think the quality is showing in the music. This album will have 17 songs! And every one they’ve put out so far has been great. I’m glad to see them back and passionate about making music again.
I've known ppl from California who've told me that people from Toronto have a similar accent to them, and tbh tom doesn't sound Canadian, generally, but does sound torontonian, if anything. Which is totally different from most other places in Canada. Maybe BC is similar, but Saskatchewan, Alberta etc nah.

he's got a point tbf, when you hitting the 30's and got a family that waiting for you it a big priority in life, you've achieved something in music for a long time and then it does start to break down knowing that you're not 16 years old anymore, it a shame we can't go back to the late 90's and early 00's.
i doubt it was exactly like that, travis and mark probably just told him the band, or the family, knowing he'd choose his family. They might of thought it was unhealthy for him to stay away from his kid/wife for so long. But that's pure speculation, i've got no fucking clue.

They were both able to balance touring and family life (Mark better than Tom). I think you are probably pretty close to the reality of the situation. Mark and Travis probably told Tom that balancing family life and touring was difficult and to really think about it before deciding what to do. I really think Tom is just misrepresenting the whole situation. But hey, now that Tom is divorced maybe we will see a reunion. One condition, Tom doesn't use ANY music he wrote for A&A.

To add to everything IIRC Tom was also becoming more and more reclusive but controlling over their recording process. He wanted them to spend a long time on the Self Titled album, which is fine, but also during the last third of the process wouldn't show up for recording sessions and would just have them send him the pro tools files and vice versa. Personally I'm of the belief that it was a combination of Tom feeling burned out from touring and feeling deprived of artistic freedom and Mark wanting to continue pushing forward on the wave of success that the band had brought them with Travis being somewhere in the middle but able to work on other projects. Then add in massive communication issues, the open secret that they were all either drinking too much or using pills and the outright conflict that ST brought and yea, I can see why all that happened
Imagine if Tom didn’t leave that first time and they wrote a record right after the self-titled album. Right off the peak of their careers. Damn I wish I lived in the alternate dimension where that got to happen.
We would've heard a lot more songs like Asthenia and Not Now. Songs that still sound like blink at their hearts but have a distinctly different influence.
The bulk of the break up can be summed up as this: "Creative Differences. Tom wanted to expand and be more in control of what he wanted to do and make, but Mark and Travis didn't want that.

Mannnn..... Blink would go down as one of the best bands ever if all of the BCR, A&A, and +44 songs were released as Blink ones. That would be such a masssssive, unique, and amazing discography. Hard to see in the moment, but egos are killer when it comes to bands. Blink already has a strong legacy, but it could have been next effing level.
if you think about it tho, without all those bands that were created , both mark and tom wouldnt have had the creative ability to write such songs.. idk if you watched the zane lowe interview with blink recently but both mark and tom touched on how they had competitive edge with one another in their own bands.. i think it was meant to be that BCR, A&A, and +44 were created cause that brought out the best out of both
I got into blink-182 when I was in the 7th grade (2003) & it wasn’t long after that they broke up…I was devastated and wanted more from the band! Not Now was the last real single I feel like we got from them. I gave A&A & +44 a shot back then and the listening experience was alright, but it just wasn’t the same…then finally in 2012 with Neighborhoods it felt like a forced reunion. Fast forward to 2023 and I saw them live and they’re back stronger than ever! Gah how 15 years flies by.

goes both ways. if you're in a band, you have to think about your mates, and have to dedicate yourself. being in a band but being a father/husband makes it worse, which was tom's case. mark and tom had different priorities
I agree, I can understand where he was coming from now and why he felt he had to leave blink. I didnt think mark had a problem with Boxcar racer because he did the elevator track with tom. I think Mark and Travis should watch this.

(Although, it didn't really work for Travis, as he wound up getting divorced twice) Tom probably assumed that his two best friends would understand that he was struggling and would try to fix the situation to help him, but was probably shocked, hurt, and let down when they did not. There was no friendship. He was miserable. Why stay?

That song was written about his parents divorce. If anything, putting his family before the band, was staying together for the kids.

There's definitely a reason why you would have another band for another sound or direction.
+44 and California didn't do that much for me for a number of reasons. There's some good ideas on them, but overall I think they are far away from reaching their full potential. But there's hope judging from some deluxe tracks off California. Overall I find Tom's material to have much more substance, though.
Transplants
The other thing that upset Mark was that in addition to the success of Box Car Racer, Geffen offered Tom a pretty lucrative solo deal which would pull him away from blink entirely. He turned it down twice, which you think Mark would be happy about but he never mentioned it in interviews. BCR was never meant to be a full-fledged new band. Hell, even Travis admitted that BCR was never spoken about as a long term thing. I can get why Mark would be hurt about it, and maybe Tom should've been more direct about it but to give someone an ultimatum about work or their family is pretty bad. Also, Mark should've been more open to trying new ideas. Tom was already experimenting in TOYPAJ with songs like Stay Together for the Kids and Story of a Lonely Guy which are both much "heavier" than anything they'd written before.
I honestly can't blame Tom for leaving one bit in 2005. 2015 is different, as Tom has stated many times he didn't want to leave a second time but found it "hard as hell to commit". Again, I think it came down to Mark making unreasonable demands of him because he wants to keep living the good ol' days.
@@DV-zv4ox agreed. Even the songs that Mark brought to the table on their s/t were rehashed and stale. You can tell which songs Tom wrote because they had a different and more dynamic feel. A lot of people miscontrue that with "weird", especially coming from a pop punk band but that album is probably my favorite Blink album just based off of Tom's enhanced songwriting. Even a lot of the newer AvA stuff are straight bangers.

Even if you look at now, with the new AVA material and new Blink, Tom has so much more artistic integrity and curiosity than Mark. Tom really brought out the best in Mark as a song writer

Back in 2011 I got to see Blink 182 live in Charlotte NC. They had a thing called “Boomer Loves B00-b-ies” where if you donated a certain amount of money to breast cancer awareness you could do a meet and greet with Tom! Me and a friend got to do it and Tom was super nice but you could tell he was a tad introverted and preferred one on one conversations and not to be swamped. We got a cool poster that he signed for us too. BUT something about the show felt strange. It just didn’t seem like their hearts were in it. They barely interacted on stage. I wasn’t surprised when the band broke up again soon after. Now for the good news: these new songs are so killer. Not only that but it looks like they are genuinely having fun again and enjoying being together. And I truly think the quality is showing in the music. This album will have 17 songs! And every one they’ve put out so far has been great. I’m glad to see them back and passionate about making music again.
Miss him so much but I respect his decision, his family needed him....that's a good guy right there!

he's got a point tbf, when you hitting the 30's and got a family that waiting for you it a big priority in life, you've achieved something in music for a long time and then it does start to break down knowing that you're not 16 years old anymore, it a shame we can't go back to the late 90's and early 00's.

i doubt it was exactly like that, travis and mark probably just told him the band, or the family, knowing he'd choose his family. They might of thought it was unhealthy for him to stay away from his kid/wife for so long. But that's pure speculation, i've got no fucking clue.
@@short-eu7bs I dunno, Tom is just making is sound like Mark and Travis literally made him choose between one or the other. I just don't see it. Mark and Travis are both family men with children. They were both able to balance touring and family life (Mark better than Tom). I think you are probably pretty close to the reality of the situation. Mark and Travis probably told Tom that balancing family life and touring was difficult and to really think about it before deciding what to do. I really think Tom is just misrepresenting the whole situation. But hey, now that Tom is divorced maybe we will see a reunion. One condition, Tom doesn't use ANY music he wrote for A&A.

To add to everything IIRC Tom was also becoming more and more reclusive but controlling over their recording process. He wanted them to spend a long time on the Self Titled album, which is fine, but also during the last third of the process wouldn't show up for recording sessions and would just have them send him the pro tools files and vice versa. Personally I'm of the belief that it was a combination of Tom feeling burned out from touring and feeling deprived of artistic freedom and Mark wanting to continue pushing forward on the wave of success that the band had brought them with Travis being somewhere in the middle but able to work on other projects. Then add in massive communication issues, the open secret that they were all either drinking too much or using pills and the outright conflict that ST brought and yea, I can see why all that happened

Tom wanted to expand and be more in control of what he wanted to do and make, but Mark and Travis didn't want that.

Mannnn..... Blink would go down as one of the best bands ever if all of the BCR, A&A, and +44 songs were released as Blink ones. That would be such a masssssive, unique, and amazing discography. Hard to see in the moment, but egos are killer when it comes to bands. Blink already has a strong legacy, but it could have been next effing level.
if you think about it tho, without all those bands that were created , both mark and tom wouldnt have had the creative ability to write such songs.. idk if you watched the zane lowe interview with blink recently but both mark and tom touched on how they had competitive edge with one another in their own bands.. i think it was meant to be that BCR, A&A, and +44 were created cause that brought out the best out of both

I got into blink-182 when I was in the 7th grade (2003) & it wasn’t long after that they broke up…I was devastated and wanted more from the band!
Not Now was the last real single I feel like we got from them.
I gave A&A & +44 a shot back then and the listening experience was alright, but it just wasn’t the same…then finally in 2012 with Neighborhoods it felt like a forced reunion.
Fast forward to 2023 and I saw them live and they’re back stronger than ever! Gah how 15 years flies by.
They're back :)

goes both ways. if you're in a band, you have to think about your mates, and have to dedicate yourself. being in a band but being a father/husband makes it worse, which was tom's case. mark and tom had different priorities
I agree, I can understand where he was coming from now and why he felt he had to leave blink. I didnt think mark had a problem with Boxcar racer because he did the elevator track with tom. I think Mark and Travis should watch this.

He wasn't trying to call all of the shots. For some people, like Travis and Mark, dragging your family around works. (Although, it didn't really work for Travis, as he wound up getting divorced twice) Tom probably assumed that his two best friends would understand that he was struggling and would try to fix the situation to help him, but was probably shocked, hurt, and let down when they did not. There was no friendship. He was miserable. Why stay?
