Kevin penkin’s unique ability to layer the tracks like nothing you've ever heard before and his keen sense when to strip back layers to let the base melody breathe if you would.
I think he does a lot of different vocal work! He has compositions with choirs, chanting, female and male pieces, you should try listening to VOH if you haven’t yet, the guy who sings it has such a crazy range
I enjoy how much he sneaks futuristic synth elements into a lot of the soundtrack despite it being heavily reliant on traditional sounds (in this song alone there's a lot of strings, drums and chanting) for that ancient exploratory feel. It complements the story so well because it's about exploring essentially an ancient cave filled with relics and strange creatures, but we slowly learn of many technologically advanced relics of some alien(?) civilization that shape the bizarre environment (and do horrible things to intruders)...
heya, Kevin's mix engineer for Made in Abyss here. This might have been the hardest single track in the entire anime series+films' discography for me to mix, lol. Enjoyed watching this reaction.
You are doing the Lords work with these made in abyss reactions from season two I highly recommend old stories and belafs lullaby, truly moving pieces both of them.
honestly, the movie and s2 soundtrack are just no where near talked about enough. which is a shame considering how I think the soundtrack of abyss has gotten better with every entry, and as of now it's my favorite soundtrack in media.
@@Sineseol I hard disagree, I think s1 is the least amazing part of the story. the city of scorching sun, is one of my favorite arcs in any piece of media I have seen, and is one of the 8 anime entries that I have ever given a 10/10 to. the movie isn't that far behind either. bondrewd himself is one of the best villains I have ever seen, but along side that, the reg vs bondrewd fight has to be one of my favorite fight scenes ever. and that's besides the point of the emotional scenes hitting like a truck every time. They are an Abyss language that the created based on german,if I remember correctly. It’s one of those cases where the composer just wants you to feel it and not understand it.
I'm only really familiar with Kevin's work through MiA, but 'Juroimoh Mutation' is one of my favourite tracks from Season 2 with other favourites being 'Old Stories' and 'Gravity'. Good tracks from S1 and DotDS are 'Hanezeve Caradhina', 'Tomorrow', 'Pathways', 'Underground River', 'Transcendence and Hanezeve' and 'Narahate and the Machine'. Also, if you're unfamiliar with the subject matter of the anime do be aware that anything to do with 'layers' may have thematic significance...
I can't believe belaf's lullaby isn't even mentioned most of the time. It singlehandedly made me tear up MULTIPLE times. This music piece of art and ( spoilers ) kitty's first death were the only 2 things that got me 🤷♂️
The 2 songs that Everyone is sleeping by Kevin Penkin are 'reBirth' and 'Prayer and Immolation'. everyone has done reactions to songs like 'Rumbling of scientific triumph' and 'transcendence and hanazeve' but no one ever reacts to those songs which makes me sad. 'Tozo Hanoline' is a great song as well.
I'm late to this MiA reaction for some reason but I want to say, the way you let no aspect of a song escape you (whether you personally like the composition or not) is so refreshing and fun to see. Because regardless of that fact, you react with interest to understand and dissect these compositions which in turn makes these reactions very genuine. It also makes me respect what you do (these reactions) and *how* you do them a lot more. To add to that one last thing, it makes me pay as much attention as you do and for the most part to catch all the complexities you point out. I have moments where I can't hear everything since I'm not a composer or learned in music but,,, that's besides the point haha. You're wonderful Tony, thank you for this reaction!
Fantasy, beautiful, jarring, disturbing, cute, terrifying. I find it amazing how both the show and the ost can be described with those words. The songs have so many things mashed together but anyone who watches the show will listen to any piece and say "yup, this is it".
For me this is definitely in my top 5 of his made in abyss ost’s. The middle section with the clearly defined voices that are of this angelic nature and then the deep crushing despair that follows always makes me tear up especially knowing what scene this plays with in the anime. I can’t recommend this whole soundtrack and the show for that matter enough. Absolutely a must watch and no show probably captures the feeling of hauntingly beautiful better than it. For other ost’s I’d recommend kill la kill’s whole ost, but specifically blumenkranz and nui harime’s theme. Can’t wait for whatever you have in store!
There is a set of songs that share a leitmotif that I like the use of throughout MiA those being Reg's Theme, Relinquish, and Dark Reg Nightmare Fuel. I do think that "The First Layer" is a good atmospheric track if you're into those
The First layer is a fairly simple piece, that while effective doesn't make for the greatest analysis content. I'd recommend its more developed older brother, The Fourth Layer, which is the same melody but more fully orchestrated and fleshed out. After that, I'd check out the next evolution on the idea within Mallets of Abyss, which expands on the idea while still feeling entirely distinct in its own right.
I have no words how mesmerizing this ost is, in this short anime fantasy series. Its so mindblowingly good, it sucks you in !! Still can't believe a short anime would have this quality of music... its maddening. No anime has the right to sound so good!
I know that the Patrons will eventually request MIA tracks like Hanazeve Caradhina, Old Stories, Tomorrow, etc. But 2 tracks I'd really like to hear your opinion on is Tozo Hanoline & I AM BURNING MAN
You have to listen to Tomorrow Or Hanezeve Caradahina next, the fandom fights over which is the best like most others fight over best girl. -Kevin IS our waifu-
To suggest a couple of my favorites that other people haven't recommended yet, you might listen to Tomorrowland and Dance: Narehate. Oh, and Mallets of Abyss! I also wanted to point out how going from season one to the movie to season two, Kevin Penkin's compositions have gone from being heavy on classical instrumental with some splashes of non-standard traditional instruments, synthesizers, and vocals to integrating them more and more. I think it really demonstrates his strong grasp on musical theory how he can create these beautiful and really effective compositions while using such eclectic and unorthodox sounds.
Tomorrow is by far my favorite song from him. I really, really like most of MiA OST but Tomorrow just hits me different. Vibes so familiar yet impossible to describe, it touches me more than any other song. First time I have heard it I literally couldn't believe something SO beautiful can exist, this song made me watch the whole anime and it is still the only anime that I gave a 10. But as for other songs, my favorites are then probably Old Stories, Counterpoint of Abyss, Ouni, 2 Months and Tomorrowland. Of course all others are really amazing and I really recommend to listen to the whole OST if you still didn't (not listening to this OST would be the biggest mistake ever)
The first three notes are enough for me to instantly recognize it and get a huge wave of chills, crazy how the OSTs from this show touches me right on the feels.
I really love the Made in Abyss OSTs, especially this one. I Tried my best to make a tribute soundtrack for made in abyss inspired by Kevin Penkin. I discovered that he really likes to blend so many styles of music together and that's just a really creative approach. What mostly happens is a "hybrid" where orchestral and synth based instruments work together, and i think that's what's unique about these soundtracks.
I use these ost to dream with my original character. The first part reminds me of titanic pale trees; in fact the imaginary registration goes from the middle of the log, it encounters rocks, more and more light and there it is my character on a rock or on of a benches wo watched from above with the wind between her hair
This music doesn't have a specific genre it belongs to, but I do understand this kind of music because this is how I compose. It's called "whatever works", and it requires a keen sense for how most people interpret momentum while making sure each measure, sound, instrument, note, and harmony is a dynamic reaction to what immediately came before it. And you only do all of that if you already have a simple foundation that you can lean into yourself. It's all about appreciating what you just heard so you can respect the diverse nature of the story you have become the medium for.
