Do VOH NEXT!
Sometimes I forget that you taught orchestra/band instead of being just a base player...
You can try "gravity" next time. It hits hard all the time
By the way the vocalist is singing a made up language to add to the constant theme of mystery throughout the series
Not only is Kevin's music for Made in Abyss insanely good-- he's also prolific! I'm still in awe that this guy made an HOUR AND A HALF of new, incredible music for a 2 hour movie.
Yea that's impressive
And he makes masterpieces, seriously beautiful stuff
Loving all the recognition kevin is getting
Waiting untill someone will request VOH.
VOH and Tomorrow are GOAT tier
The vocals in VOH go crazy, literally weaponized voice cracks
And San ken
@@onesmileybaldy8303Takeshi Saito put his soul into that song 😂
Same. I don't understand how VOH is that overlooked.
Oh man, why are you doing this to me? The scene during this OST destroyed me inside, every time I remember and listen to this wonderful OST I burst into tears.
Which scene? There were at least 4, and all of them have that effect.
@@The_Blazelighter I think he talks about (careful huge spoilers coming) vueko's death
@@Ace-17 HUGE SPOILERS
That whole sequence is so so sad ... Vueko reminiscing about Irumyuui .... just awful, but also beautiful.
Same here

Both Vueko's transformation and death scene. The thing is, throughout the second season, I had grown particularly fond of Vueko.
Something about that piano is haunting. It's simple, but addictive and somehow caries a lot of emotion with it. I listened to this song weeks ago, but that simple phrase and the surrounding chord progressions are still stuck in my head.
The first time I heard this track in episode one or so, there was only the piano bit and it immediately made me go like "I want more of this!"
This song is about good memories that now are gone forever, and Kevin was able to pack this one with exact emotions one would feel thinking about them: bittersweet happiness fused with sadness, nostalgia, longing. That's just show that he is not a mere composer, but an artist.
Listen to the ost of boku no terror - VON. It came out earlier and is basically the same
Such a beautiful song, it sounds like its from a very pleasant and happy anime
🤣🤣🤣
O_O
In case this isn't sarcasm... I'd warn against going in with that expectation, lol.
yeah sure, a happy anime
@@Alellion I'd suggest going in with that expectation as it makes it that much more impactful
I hope I don't cry when I hear this song again
gets me every time
@@sosu418 me too sosu
I love how this feels thematically.
When the singing starts, you cannot grasp the rhythm and harmony. You do not understand the language or their way of life.
As this unknown culture tells its old stories, you begin to figure out everything: Their pain, their hope and their beliefs. From nothing but the emotion that is conveyedwithin the repetition in the bridge, the song builds into a coherent whole, as you acquaint yourself with the so very different.
By the end, the history and the way of these people has touched you so that you hear the nuances and whispers.
Never before has a song encapsulated the growth from alien to familiar so perfectly. An absolute ode to ethnic contact, exchange, acceptance and affection.
LIKE IT'S JUST GRAND MAJESTIC ! HOW INSANELY SEEMLESS HE MAKES VOCAL WORK FOR STRINGS AND VICE VERSA IT'S SOO GENIUS AND PROFESSIONAL I'M SOOO GLAD YOU DESCRIBED EXACTLY HOW I CAN'T EVEN PUT INTO WORD'S
No lie, that alternating D and D# on the piano haunts me. Never thought these two notes could do so much.
And I might be overthinking this, but it's like... they're two notes sitting right next to each other, almost like a mother and her little daughter. But you separate them by dropping the D# one octave lower and you got something heart-breaking. The D# starts to climb to D but falls back down to start it all again. Reminding me of the dark themes and tragedies of Made in Abyss. That piano line is just... too much.
Also, I'm guessing "VOH" should be next and then "Tomorrow" maybe. Some people think VOH is a better Kevin Penkin piece but I think that track is heavily carried by the vocals of Takeshi Saito. Like a masterpiece by Kevin and Saito. I can't discredit Saito because he did so much for that track.
Here, even though the vocals is also outstanding, it's more of a compliment than a carry. It didn't even come in till the latter half. Here, the arrangement and composition is what's really carrying. So in my opinion, this is Kevin's best so far. Just my own opinion.
Omg how are u so knowledge like omg skswksb
I think this ost is probably one of if not my favorite ost of all time, I've always admired Kevin Penkin's work ever since I discovered him on the first Mia season or Tower of God, but this one has something special, it makes you feel so much things, even without the anime's context and its hard to put the right words on how powerful and deep this ost is, thank you for reacting to Kevin's work, your analysis are always a pleasure !
Highly recommend the show:
-season 1
-movie
-season 2.
For me 10/10 show wouldn't recommend to friends you want to keep.
The vocal song of this soundtrack are always incredible. Each of them deserves its own video, I hope one day you'll be able to react to the wonders that are Tozo Hanoline and Gravity.
Gravity is amazing
@@shadowreacts5618 that it is, my friend!
I cried the first time i listened to gravity...idk why it just made me... (I dont mean in anime i mean just listening to purely the song)
Both perfect, good choice bro
I pray to god he gets around to Tozo Hanoline. One of the most powerful MiA songs in my opinion.
This is my favorite Made in Abyss OST. So goooood!
Ive listened to this song dozens of times and i get teary eyed every single time. Its an incredible composition on its own, but within the underlying context of made in abyss, this song is elevated to a breathtaking level. Saying Kevin is special is an understatement.
Old Stories is one of the songs thats so hauntingly beautiful to me that I cannot think about this song too much & play it in my head for too long or I will break down to tears. Like ill start getting teary eyed at work, especially when I think about the scenes that accompany this song. Made In Abyss & Kevin Penkin has been a match made in musical heaven, such a masterpiece of a show.
You should totally check out Terror in Resonance's ost. Something like "Dare ka, Umi wo", "von" or " ís" from Kanno Yoko. Very beautiful music.
Yeah I haven't heard anyone else comment on it yet, but the opening piano here sounds like VON! I think there's direct inspiration there. Also because the singer in that song is ALSO in this OST!
Glad there is already a comment about it. Definitely inspired by Zankyou no Terror ost. Not just the intro, the vocals too.
And I love that.
I was looking for this comment, man. Thank You!
NC17 and BIRDEN are amazing too.
@@luisfernandomauricio5379 yeah they are

OMGGG WE ARE WINNING
YES MADE IN ABYSS FANBASE IS SOO BLESSED ( ALSO CURSED TOO IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN HSJSKAKA)
God this song has an exceptional capacity to just make me shed waterfalls... made in abyss truly is the story where the deeper you go, the harder you cry
That piano part is so perfect to be played the entire song and still fit with all the moving parts. And the way the main melody is played by the flute, then the strings, and finally the voice is just absolutely gorgeous. The singer reminds me of Aurora but somehow even more delicate.
This is one of my favorites to hear when a I just want to chill and/or colma down,it’s so soothing and calming that it puts me on a good state of mind instantly.
I'm unsure if Kevin Penkin created a fake language or just created fake words to make it sound like a fake language, since there a language created for these creatures in the anime but all those words sound real, and they sound powerful even though you can't understand it you feel the heat of the melody and it possibly evangelical and cursed meaning.
Iirc the lyrics to the osts that have vocals are the "abyss language" I forgot what language Kevin uses but he did a reddit ama and he says what he uses
I don't understand why VOH and Tomorrow are that overlooked... I hope someone request them.
Fun fact- the melody of Old Stories is a direct nod to the melody of VON out of Zankyou no Terror
this was one of the soundtracks i really loved and hear it maaany times
fuck me I got tears in my eyes especially by the end holy crap the vocals hit hard
Together with the Pictures of the Anime of made in Abyss all those musical pieces are underlining this mealstrom of beauty, adventure, pain and trauma. The Anime is a really crazy work of art in its fullest and of those animes wich shake one to the core.
I started watching this video when you uploaded it on the train and had to turn it off cause I was gonna start crying haha. I'm gonna watch the whole thing now. This song combined with the associations from season 2 of the show just destroys me. Truly beautiful and haunting
It’s incredible how your able to feel a song. When I close and listen to that i literally have old memories flowing and it’s incredible. I sadly don’t understand and can’t really do any music. Music will always be life.
Continue doing your wonderful work you r incredible
oh boi, here i go crying again...
The fight between Regu and Bendrewd in Movie with "The Rumble of Scientific Triumph" played on background make me goosebumps

Gravity
VOH
Mallets of Abyss
DANCE: nArEhAtE
Princess & The Villiage
Vueko
Nature Sequence
Belays lullaby

Tomorrow
Pathway
Reg and his Interference Unit
Not only i love this music by itself, but i love how it is actually used in the show - 3 times: (Spoilers)
1. The very beginning, the first scene that stars the story of Vueko (uses the beginning of the song)
2. The middle point, the peak moment of the character (Vueko). The moment when she changes and tries to kill herself. (Uses the beginning too)
3. The Finale - beatuful death of Vueko, accompanied by the last - vocal part of the song.
When the vocals merge with the strings near the end, god I always get emotional. It always brings me back to the scene during the finally where Vueko remembers the quote “The Abyss turns everything to gold”, it’s one of my favorite scenes in MAI, and that part of the song is so connected in my head
What I love even more about the use of the Song is the fact that the violin Melody at 1:25 into the song (it also appears again later) is actually the motif of the main theme of Made in Abyss
So Old Stories always makes me think (since it is more or less Vueko's theme) that Vueko's story perfectly shows the themes of what Made in Abyss is really about
The one inclusion of the main motif makes the whole song immediately 10 times thematically richer
God bless everyone who requests him Kevin's music... Thank you so much.
I loved the waterfall analogy... Visualising music like that is beautiful.
this is one of thos stories which I cant recommend like Fire Punch or Oyasumi PunPun
this is masterpiece but your soul will be destroyed
It's almost a year and MIA hasnt left my mind a day
I love how Kevin is becoming more and more known, he is one of my favorite composers of all time
Im a beginner writer, english isnt even my native language but ive always love fantasy books. Im writing one right now to pass time and kevin penkin's song really helps me out whenever i write
Mallets of Abyss is my favorite Penkin piece rhythmically. The way all the instruments bounce and play off of eachother is a ton of fun.
Try some Steve Reich
En ésta y Voh el nivel de la composición es increíble, porque no es sólo que la expresividad técnica de los musicos sea impresionante, sino que la música en sí es brillante.
Si, VOH es el mas incréible ost de made in abyss
I listen to this song while I work along with others from Made in abyss, and they are the fastest and most productive 7 minutes of trance of the entire work day
i love made in abyss so dam much
Even with all the pauses there are certain points when I just start tearing up like crazy.
that's why he is the goat
I believe Mr. Penkin has mentioned that his musical background was as a flautist so it makes sense that he'd be good at arranging for them
Kevin's writing translates emotion and theme so well. It makes every progressions in a song sounds so sincere and true. Is this his inner music theory or his gift as an artist I don't know, should be both. Still his OST in each series does have its own sound and identity which goes so well with the serie that's for sure.
OH MY GOD YES THIS SONG IS SO GOOD
Невероятно эмоциональная, красивая и сложная композиция. Способна задеть струны моей души. Спасибо
I think the part where you said feeling like under the water and can't make sense on what's going on is the way Kevin summarize what happened at Made In Abyss Season 2. Things were so messed up that you cant make head or tail of it but still the whole story in the end is hauntingly beautiful.
Well i really thank you for making me discover this one ! It made me think of another song I adore, "VON" from zankyou no terror and hearing something so similar yet so beautiful in its contrast was amazing! Definitely will practice this piece on piano
you should listen to "The Return of Made in Abyss" it's one of the best track of the second album
"Did you hear that peace? Back 7min we have to go again"
Listen VOH is another pearl not to be missed
Hello! I just found this video. Many thanks for reviewing such a beautiful soundtrack 🥰 you really seem excited reviewing music which makes me excited too. First time I saw Made in Abyss two things practically pulled me like a gravitational force: the animation and the soundtrack by Kevin Penkin. Both are so intertwined and help raise the amount of awe and wonder to a level I hadn't felt in many years of watching series. I felt like a child once again.
I was going through a very difficult times in my life when I found Made in Abyss (along with Houseki no kuni), and they both surprised me so much that a little of my pain was forgotten. They'll always have a special place in my heart ❤️❤️❤️ Kevin Penkin is awesome and that's little to say
I watched Made In Abyss and have been a fan of Kevin Penkin ever since. The music is just beautiful 👌
FINALLY YESS ITS HAPPENING EVERYONE STAY CALM
I need Made in Abyss back on the channel haha
One of kevin's strengths is how he manages to play into both the culture as well as his own previous works in this anime. One thing people would be severely missing out on when not watching the anime, but just hearing single bits of his music, is how he really plays well with themes and motifs, over the two seasons and movie of made in abyss he's done the music for he's managed to create safe spaces in music to only smash them and break the audience. One of the earlier examples would be stairway to the fifth, where an amalgamation of the happy-exploring gets pitch shifted into something unwelcoming.
Besides that, kevin clearly has a favourite in yoko kanna's OST for zankyou no terror (both an amazing anime as soundtrack, benevolent terrorism in japan combined with icelandic post rock¿), where the motif in VON is a very clear inspiration for the motif in this, as well as penkin working together with the same icelandic singer. I think there is a significant overlap in the two works, both in ost and anime, as well as the people who enjoy it.
I’m looking forward to the video with VOH
Knowing the context of this song and the scenes in which it accompanies, i choke up every time i hear it. And so much of Penkins work on the show and movie do this exact thing to me. Its the sign of great synergy between composer and director, to bring the audio and visuals together in such a powerful way.
Respect to you man, You can feel the music very well and this is a blessing, this OST comes from the soul in my opinion.
i literally heard the golden city over 1,000 times this year
Still salty since kevin didn't win the best OST in Crunchyroll Awards, this is one of my favorite MIA soundtracks
Who won?

@@cinnamonyuuki Oh. Ha, well...
I will just be one of many that will tecommend VOH now. Always a pleasure to see and hear your thoughts on these pieces! C:
This song is a masterpiece. If you disagree, Faputa will find you
I disagree. I want Faputa to find me
It feels like a in the Waterfall when water go away and find back together
[ベラフの子守歌](belaf's lullaby), this OST #3 is also incredible🙂🙂
this descending string motive is found in many of the made in abyss tracks. Its part of the main theme and it gets me every time. You should definetly check that one out as well.
Now VOH next pls
I think the track "Vueko" from Made in Abyss also deserves a deeper analysis.
Im not kidding, this is the music I want to hear as I die.
loved this breakdown, the articulation the pauses , highlighting, thoroughly enjoyed ❤️
PLEASE we need belafs lullaby and the rumble of scientific triumph
We all love Kevin
As someone who put off watching this series until a week ago, please, watch this show if you haven't already. It is an incredible emotional journey that, at least in my case, gave me an entirely different perspective on life and the things we do with our time on this earth. It will make you hopeful, it'll make you laugh and smile, and it'll rip your heart out. I've never been so affected by any piece of media in my life, and I already wish I could watch it for the first time over again.
Subarashi...
Nooooooooo
Every time this melody starts up during an episode I know I'm about to ugly cry.
This is one of my favorite songs ever. I thought your review highlighted many things that I often think about when I listen to the song.
I want this to be played at my funeral. In fact, I wanna become someone worthy of that - I wanna have a lot of stories and impact lot of people close to me in a positive way... So they can reminisce about the old stories after I'm gone.
Cause I know I have people and things like that already. Once they're gone - this music captures the hauntingly sad feeling of coming to terms with that while also happily appreciating and being thankful to them.
Idk. Many of Made in Abyss tracks have that duality for me. They are both happy and sad... They're just emotional.
PRAYED FOR TIMES LIKE THESE 🙏
At least for me this is the most emotional OST from Made in Abyss.
My favorite tho.. it's hard. Made in Abyss OST is clearly Kevin's masterpiece
I need more reactions to the 3rd season soundtracks pleaaaaaseeeee
Chills as that flute came in. Such beautifully played melody
Omg love it soooo much, this anime’s songs are out of this world
Recommendations of the day:
Tabibito No Uta by Yuiko Ohara
(Series: Mushoku Tensei)
Innocent Ignorance by BiSH
(Series: Heavenly Delusion/Tengoku Daimakyou)
You should react to VOH next. It is in my opininon above all else kevin has made with that genius mind of his. Awesome reaction as always !
This is one of the best from Made in Abyss, but there are still others just as good, and they all compliment each other and are all crucial pieces to what make it such a special anime.
there is so many incredible musics/songs on made in abyss...
Transcendence and hanezeve is probably one of my fav' (one of the movie song)
Particularly with the Made in abyss OSTs, I really love that the "Human" side is represented by the regular instruments and regular harmony and the "side" of the Abyss is represented by synthesizers and dissonance
My favorite OST of all time, a masterpiece
So I have to wait 5 hours for this… talk about torture😭
Been waiting for this one, and it did not disappoint. Easily in my top 3 ost songs.
So happy you reacted to this one!!!!!
this is the most healing song for me, I always listen to this when alone on a motorcycle after a hard day
PLEASE now react to either Gravity or VOH, both of those are absolutely beautiful.
all of Made in Abyss OST is pure musical gold

There is something about this song, that is just incredible. Sometimes i listen to it at a surface level, but when i close my eyes it just takes you.
Every time I hear this song it hits me in the feels so hard
