  • He's worked with world class artists such as Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and David Foster and produced soundtracks for motion pictures such as Independence Day, Pirates of the Caribbean and more. Experienced yet humble, John JR Robinson has earned himself the title of the Most Recorded Drummer in History. He is, without a doubt, one of the most influential drummers in the industry today.
But before the endless recordings for blockbuster movies and award-winning albums - what was life like for history's most recorded drummer? How did it all begin?

Love JR. His drumming is always fresh and his outlook refreshing. If Jeff Porcaro had lived it would have been so interesting to see how the first-call gigs would have materialized for each, and the continuing specialization they would both have brought to the drumming community.

My first introduction to this man, believe it or not, was back when I was age 4 during the RUFUS & CHAKA Masterjam era. Of course, OFF THE WALL too, but it was shortly after I started to realize the brilliance.👍

I just learned that JR Robinson was the drummer on Chaka Kahn's "Through the Fire." What a great, great drum composition /accompaniment he played on that song.

Always great to see videos featuring the one and only JR Robinson. I got to know JR back in 2003 when I was invited to do the Yamaha Groove Night in LA that year. We got such a great report that we ended up doing some duo clinics in Scandinavia later that year. His enthusiasm and commitment to music and drums is truly something special. Thanks!

What a fantastic human being 👍
John is so humble and down to earth. John is a fine example of the phrase What a nice guy. So nice that he is not arrogant or cocky from the amount of success he has had.
Thank you John for being a fantastic example of someone to look up to. A true gem.🙂👍

John is an absolute legend. He played it with me at Ocean Way Studio on a song I wrote with Jon Anderson called “ It’s On Fire”. Jimmy Haslip is on bass and I ( Don Freeman) am on piano. Unusual tune and John made up his own part which you’d just have to hear. Brilliant drummer!

No one who has the title of most recorded drummer is underappreciated. A friend was a composer who worked for Mike Post, on a number of TV shows. One day he was talking to his mom and telling her what he was doing. His mom said, "I don't see your name on the credits." He replied, "Ma, my name is on the check."

JR = excellent highly-versatile drummer. "Becoming" the most recorded drummer in history. Hal Blaine is probably, THE most recorded drummer in history. Claiming over 35,000 sessions and 6000 singles. And just passed away in March, 2019.

Are those Sponge Bob Square Pants bass drum beaters? ☺️. I need those!
I remember reading about John in Modern Drummer in 1988'ish about him just playing on Steve Windwoods' 1986 record Back in The High Life. I would play to Back in the High Life, and Bring me a Higher Love and knew right away that the groove & pocket was so strong with him.
It's so great he had an amazing Mom. I wish I had a Mom that even listened to music. Much less one that instilled swing, groove, and music history into me at 6 years old. My dad made up for my mom to a degree. But, having read thousands of drummer & musician interviews, coming from a talented musical family is so instrumental (not every time, tho) in becoming a successful musician.

Been looking at this warch..It is great for tempo but....if you play to a click track....is there a way to get the tempo from a midi note? We use a lot of timed samples since I play both bass and keys...if the drummer and I could have 2 watches and this syncing to a midi click...would be a no brainer.

    • @Soundbrenner

You are both right. Jonathan Moffet was Michael Jackson's live drummer, so played Smooth Criminal hundreds of times live. JR was the studio drummer for most of the Bad album. My copy of Bad credits John Robinson, Bill Bottrell and Bruce Swedien as the drummers on Smooth Criminal.

EASY man! 😂 I love Earl Palmer.. I mean, he was the first one to play that rock and roll beat that John Bonham played on the song "Rock and Roll" but I have never heard Earl Palmer on any Fusion records, and of course I've never heard him play a Songo. He is amazing but I'm about 99.9% sure he is not the world's most versatile drummer.

Some drummers enjoy being part of the band and aren't interested in soloing. That doesn't make them a lesser drummer. One day, in the studio, in Nashville, Dave Mattacks, who never played solos, was asked to play a fill and he replied, "Do I have to?"
