    Yes, yes, and yes. I first switched to flat in 1998, never looked back. What did it for me was realizing that all you need to do is get low and wax the top of any gritty ledges you want to grind. The speed and maneuverability is worth the extra effort.

    • @chrischadwick1
      @chrischadwick1  2 года назад +1

      Absolutely it's definitely worth the switch once you get the hang of it. And anything works with enough wax

    Nice video m8 good to get the word out. Flat is so much nicer on aging knees and so much more fun carving through the park.
    One thing to keep an eye on though is your softer outer wheels will wear down faster than the inner harder wheels, leaving you with a banana rockered setup which will make you verry maneuverable but highly unstable.
    I had this same idea when I got my kizer hi-lo aluminium frames. I went for Famus 68mm 88a on the outside and because I heard the famus wheels were verry grippy I got some roces joe atkinson 60mm 94a wheels on the inside. It's probably the best feeling setup I ever rode but the outside wheels wore down to the point I was rolling on mostly the inner wheels after 4 or 5 sessions. I've since changed out the outer wheels for some usd team wheels which are a bit harder and hopefully won't wear down as fast as the famus wheels, next step will probably be changing the inner wheels for some 60 90's to get them to wear more evenly.

    Yes yes yes all good tips 🙌
    I actually started riding my Oysi frames with 95A wheels in the middle initially cuz of fear of wheel bite, but as you say you do forget about your middle wheels after a while. Definitely helped me mentally in the beginning not worry as much about potential wheel bite, but it started to feel super hard rolling after a while so I've gone to 92A in the middle now.
    I've got the Symetrics superfast 65mm wheels on the outside and I can't recommend them enough, they've been great. They do feel quite hard for 90A to me, but they're holding up really well!
    Cheers for another quality video ✌️

    Hey Chris, we used to skate back in the day. I've since got back into it and always used to ride freestyle or anti-rocker. Now I'm on flat setup and whilst I get the odd wheelbite it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be, feels so much more manoeuvrable too. Enjoying the videos mate!

      @@chrischadwick1 live from the park I'am actually a bit disappointed, I totally slip away on sharp turns. Grinds are smoove but I have to go down further as with the aeons. Think I use greater wheels maybe 68 on the outside to avoid the sliding while turning. Greetings, I'll do my best and try hard atm.

  • @ThatShaunBoy

    Also wheel profile. Always see people moaning about flat but use flat/square profile wheels. All about rounded and bullet profiles, it keeps the side of the wheel (the part that sticks) away from the ledge/rail etc. because the urethane isn't there. Those fat flat profile wheels are horrible for flat skating regardless of hardness and size. The UC 59mm bullet's, 5050 58mm's, any 60mm rounded profile etc etc will work so much better

    Nice video, my issue with flat is that my safe trick is a soul and in order to soul flat I often need to lose tehcnique rather than gain it. For example get sloppying on the front foot so its more at an angle than I otherwise would be on lock to get over the wheel bite, but that is on a them frame. The feeling of skate is amazing flat but the ease of anti for an old man is a fine pro/con balance lol

  • @killbot350
    @killbot350 3 года назад +1

    I own the medium Oysi frames and fluid v frames. The Oysi frames need rounded profile wheels in the middle. Do not get a bullet or rocket profile with that frame. The fluid V frame takes all profiles so if using a frame like that go with the bullet or rocket.

    My favorite flat frame is the Mega. With it I can royale on a ledge with 64 mm wheels but it is hard. If I want to go more technical I use 62 mm with rounded profile 92a on the middle. I if want to try crazy switch ups Kelso style I go 60 mm 95a on the middle because for switch ups on a ledge you really have to put your weight on the curb. Also I use a LOT of wax.

    • @chrischadwick1
      @chrischadwick1  2 года назад

      Sounds like you got it sussed man. Definitely agree on the wax. Almost anything will slide with enough wax!

  • @akmftw1994
    @akmftw1994 2 года назад +1

    Is it weird to use inner wheels like antis?
    I typically view it like power sliding when I think of it.
    Urethane straight into ledge will wheel bite, but at an angle and proper wheel profile (as well as a waxed ledge that slides decent) will let the wheels basically power slide across the ledge.

    • @chrischadwick1

      A real mix to be honest. My favourite conventional flat setup is straight 60mm. If its a hilo frame I've found 64/60 is the sweet spot. If I'm Street skating or riding big ramps I love the oysi original frames on 72/60. If I had to pick just one it would be the sola Joe frames 64/60. For wheels Revolver or Undercover. • @chrischadwick1
      @chrischadwick1  2 года назад

      Hello, not sure why you would want to remove the soulplate to ride Flat? But no, shima reissue / Cults wouldn't work without souls. The only reason I can see to remove the soul plate from an aggressive skate is to ride bigger wheels like 4x80 but that only works with flat boots and you need a fill up spacer to prevent too much torsion damaging the bottom of the boot. Hope that answers your question?
