Jaw Surgery Post Op Before and After - Day 1 to 14 (Week 1 and 2) - Recovery Experience (Underbite)

- This video is about my post op recovery from double jaw (orthognathic) surgery, where my upper and lower jaws were moved in order to correct my underbite (severe malocclusion). In this video I cover my experience of the surgery itself, the bleeding, the pain, the discomfort and the swelling, and how much I have recovered since the day of the surgery.
This video comes from the perspective of an Asian (Chinese) male adult, father of two young children, with surgery based in the UK performed by the NHS in London.

I had that surgery. I slept first day in hospital, that day was bad as I didn't really sleep and sneezed blood. After that it started getting better quick, I couldn't sleep very well during the first 2 days but just being home was much better than staying in the hospital. After day 3 I was swollen but it didn't really bother anymore. After 1 week I still looked like crap but I felt great tbh.

Thanks I appreciate it, it's been more than 2 years now but still glad to have done the surgery!
Btw, I didn't use any opioids after surgery itself, just NSAIDs, I didn't really have any pain, only numbness and a feeling of pressure on the sinus.

Omg for someone it's so easy,,,,for me it's like a hell ,
I will be going for surgery next week and I want to know what swelling will be like at the start of week 3. Also when will I be able to speak to the point where people can understand me as I know it will take a while for me to be able to speak clearly.
Thanks for the vid. Do you know why they moved your maxilla forward 6mm and mandible back 3mm, rather than just moving your maxilla forward 9mm? Would be less surgery required.
Finnally somone who had the surgery on the NHS im on a 4 year waiting list so... i've still got a while to go

@@Andytizer Thank you Andrew- it is a 30 month wait for braces, then i will have them on for approximately 18 months and by then my four year wait should be over and i will be ready for surgery.

@@pheogz7320 no not yet, I’m still on the waiting list for braces. Due to covid I think the whole process is going to be much longer than expected.
Hello Andrew, before the operation could happen did you need to tick some certain requierments with your teeth like wear braces in a specific way or something similar?
For this to be done free on NHS it had to be quite a serious underbite. I had to have braces 2+ years as well.

If you do read this please can you help me with one question. The cut under the chin has a plaster on it but I dare not remove it. Does the surgeon/orthodontist do this after one week? Thanks for commenting - do you receive free care from the NHS currently? You need to basically ask your NHS dentist for a referral to an NHS dental hospital for jaw surgery. Good luck!

Thanks, after my surgery my lower left jaw is numb, it is mostly just annoying and I rely on my wife to tell me if there’s any food there! Sometimes it feels tingly.
Rest of the face is good, it took me a long time to become comfortable with the way my face looks! In terms of foreign-ness, that stopped when the bones fused together properly and stopped moving when I ate, felt much more secure after that.
I don’t recall how long it took in the NHS, it felt like 1 year from my dentist’s referral to actually starting treatment (braces).

And how long did you have to wear braces before the operation?
@@dinath1115 Yes the surgery caused permanent nerve damage there. I knew that there was a 10% chance of this happening and I would do it again even knowing that it would happen. I literally can't remember off the top of my head!

You need a referral from your dentist to your nearest dental hospital, mine in London is Eastman.

Hey Andrew. I'll be having my surgery in about a day. I was wondering if you had a splint after the surgery. It seems as though you didn't have one or have elastics to hold your jaws together. Also, I was wondering what products you found useful for recovery. Your recovery looks to be going well and I hope mine goes as smoothly as yours. Thanks!
Hi Steven good luck on your surgery today, I hope it goes well. Luckily I didn't require a splint. I was asked to wear elastics for the first week - which was a real hassle and pain to take in and out during cleaning. However during my first appointment at the orthrodontic clinic on Day 8, they told me that my upper jaw hadn't attached fully to the jawbone (you can see at 18:16 my upper jaw is moving by a millimetre - which I forgot to mention in the video). Therefore they asked me to stop using elastics as this would slow the healing down. I expect that when I go to my next appointment, they will ask me to put my elastics back in to help guide the bite. I hope your surgery goes well, please give me an update, you are only a few weeks behind me!
Product recommendations:
Vaseline for lips - essential!
Painkillers
Ice packs
A t-shirt or cloth to tie the ice packs onto your face
Games console / Netflix to keep the boredom away (GPD Win 2)
Also I really should have got a haircut before my surgery, after nearly 3 weeks later my hair is awful and my face is so swollen I don't want to go to the hairdresser!
Andrew Tsai I wonder why you weren't given a splint. Most videos of double jaw surgeries for underbites that I've seen have had them. Interesting that you didn't need them. I wonder if that contributed to your maxilla movement. I'll be sure to keep you updated. It'd be nice to keep in touch with someone on a similar timeline. I'll be going into surgery in 6 hours. Fingers crossed!
Steven Nguyen I suspect there’s something slightly wrong with the movement of my maxilla that might’ve been helped by a splint.
