You are a godsend, I used your video about 5 years ago, to fix this problem about the power cord, not sending enough power to the HDD. The same problem has just happened again, but it took me a while to remember how I fixed it 5 years ago with your video. Thank you so much, the least I can do is subscribe to your channel.
Genius - I had a "No HDD message" and spent the afternoon taking out the HDD, replacing it with another spare I had. Both HDD's worked fine on my pc connected to the USB. So I came across your video after searching online for solutions. Swapped out the power supply and hey presto . . it works like a charm. Thankyou so much.
Id just like to say thank you for this video! I thought my DVR unit was finished and was about to throw it away and buy a new one but after seeing this and simply changing the plug it fixed it! Much appreciated
Great video, I discovered by chance that my Swann dvr was no longer recording and I couldn't access the hard drive. After watching a different video and hearing strange noises from the dvr I had ordered a new hdd but then found this video, checked out my power supply and swapped for a spare I luckily already had and problem solved. Thank you very much👍
I was on the verge of buying a new DVR or HDD until I saw this video, I switched the power supply and, bingo, we are working again. Thank you for saving me £160.
Just wanted to thank you. My error was No HDD and even when I swapped the HDD for a spare I had lying about, the same fault was there. I'm a DIY (Destroy it yourself!) expert, so I thought the unit was goosed and going to cost me around £300 for a replacement. When I did a search for what would be a good upgrade for a Swann DVR 4780, your video popped up. I've no tools and couldn't use them if I had, but I scrabbled around and found another 12v power plug. Swapped it over and voila! Sorted. Swapped out the 'new' HDD for the original one I'd taken out earlier and I'm well chuffed. Thanks very much again for your very helpful video ;0)
oh my goodness i can’t stop laughing 😂 at your DIY (“Destroy It Yourself”) comment because i have the SAME non-luck luck!! the replacement power supply trick fixed my NVR from rebooting but the system isn’t recognizing that a hard drive is attached! i can’t even re-format the HD because the NVR doesn’t even register that one is attached. This is so unnerving!!! this cheap/junk power supply power supply issue seems to be the case with ALL makes and models of security systems. if the original poster has any clue why my HD (neither the old one, nor the new replacement HD) are being recognized by the system i’d sincerely appreciate any suggestions. right now i’m just frustrated. thanks so much!!
GOT IT!!!!!!!! i did everything BUT replace the button cell battery 🔋 & once i did this step…. my hard drive was FINALLY recognized by my NVR security system!!
My swann cctv dvr showed as 'dvr not connected'. I swapped the power supply and it works perfectly. I was going to buy a new system, you've just saved me a lot of money, thankyou.
Mate, I wouldn't have thought about the power supply at all! You can't take anything for granted! I replaced my HDD because my first one had appeared to have failed.. but when that one failed within a short amount of time, I thought it was too much of coincidence. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You certainly have helped a lot of people 👍🏻😎
Thank you Internet friend! Add me to the list of people you have saved the day for! Recently my DVR lost all video signal, I somehow worked out it was power supply issue and purchased 2 new 12V transformers thinking that the main unit's PSU was not far off dying as well. 6 weeks later I find myself in awe of your video, and I had a spare 12v Transformer ready to go! Thank you again!!
My cameras were working but nothing was recording. After watching your video I changed the power supply and all is up and running. Thank you very much, sir.
Thanks for the video. My Swann DVR9-4200 hard drive would not give me playback. I clicked on Device and then Smart and it showed nothing. I thought about buying a new DVR and then got to thinking about replacing the hard drive only over a period of days messing with it. After seeing your video, I tried a new power plug and everything worked. I never dreamed it was the power plug because I still had video on all cameras, but no recordings under playback. Smart under Device shows all the information now and says "good" like its supposed to. You saved me a lot of money and I really appreciate you posting the video. Bless you!
Brilliant!! Thank you so much for posting this! I thought my problem was a failed HDD, as all else worked fine. I am not very electronics savvy, but am willing to learn things, so I will often look online for a fix. I read somewhere that it was often the power to the HDD on a Swann CCTV. So i put on a separate power supply for the HDD, and hey presto it worked again. I thought that the problem was the power supply on the main board, not the thing that powered the whole box! Now i have seen your video i will try the more simple solution, changing the main power supply transformer! As others, i did not think these little boxes ever broke down! Thanks again!!!!
you're a legend my friend, you have just saved me around £50 there was me thinking the hard drive had packed up and all it was was a £10 power supply ,thank you very much for sharing this video....
Thanks mate, that solved the problem for me. I work in IT, so i'm used to dealing with stubborn kit, but i'd never considered an undervoltage PSU. Normally, if the kit fires up, then the PSU isn't the problem. Every day is a school day... :-)
Thank you so much for showing me the importance of actually checking my power supply first! This solved my problem as whilst the original power supply showed 12V it couldn't boot up the device but the replacement could. All without having to take the machine apart .Thanks again. So grateful!
Top Man. Problem with DVR. Checked HDD. no improvement. Watched this video. Changed PSU. Voila - result. Many thanks. As a radio ham I should have known better and checked voltages 1st!
Exactly the same happened to me with the 48v power supply to my SWANN 8 camera system. Thanks for this - you helped me sort out my problem. I just bought a new power supply on Amazon and the problem was fixed
Dont forget about changing the battery on the circuit board. Its easily replaced and its a cheap button type battery 3V C2032. I hoovered out all the dust and cleaned the fan with cotton buds then changed thus battery and boom it worked. No one on these videos seems to mention this battery and its a cheap easy fix. Thx for vid tho
Brilliant thanks. I was getting the no HDD message. Decided to swap over the SATA cable, remove HDD and plug into PC. Could see it fine, reformatted and ran chkdsk. Still nothing. Finally swapped out the power supply and BOOM it’s working. Thanks so much, going away for 2 weeks tomorrow and need them working 👍
Thank you the video....awesome fix. I had the same issue after a few power outage. I replaced the internal memory and the system still was not recording. Just came across your video and swapped the power supply with a spare I had and the system fired right up. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
Many thanks for uploading this video. I have a sannce cctv system and it had gone down and wasn't doing nothing. After watching your video I switched the power lead to one of the two camera power leads (made sure they were the same output first) and then.....bingo system powered up and working fine. I've put another 12v power supply on the system now and all s good. All just as I was about to order a new cctv unit. Many thanks again saved me £££££'s.
Thank you so much, I went out and bought a new hard drive today which didn't fix the problem, wish I'd watched your video first, it was the power supply. Thank you :)
Thanks great information. i was just about to order a new hard drive and spotted your video. After testing i have now ordered a new power adaptor :0) my hard drive was working but the output had dropped causing multiple issues on the board and a slow running hard drive. thanks again all the best Jason
thanks so much for this video-like most here, replacing the power supply worked. in AUS i used this one 240V AC Adapter to DC 12V VOLT, 2A AMP w/Standard 2.1mm Inner/5.5mm Outer Plug. immediately removed the red 'no hdd' sign, and hdd lamp started flashing on box. great:)
Same as a few others, this video solved /resolved my problem. Although the first spare 12v power supply I tried was only 200mA and wouldn't work. I then tried a 500mA and it worked.
Mannnnn, you are awesome. I bought a HDD and had the same issue. i looked at the voltage but didnt think it matter and i used a new power supplky and it worked!! thanks
IMPORTANT SWANN OWNERS READ THIS , your set up will come with 3 power adapters 2 are rated 2 amps 1 is rated 1 amp You need two adapters for the cameras and one for the DVR So god only knows why the one you need for the DVR is rated at 2 amps , leaving a 1 amp and a 2 amp to power the cameras , no wonder the DVR keeps failing on a 1 amp adapter , Swann label which is for which please Moral of the story is 2 amp is for the DVR !!!!
I rarely leave comments on videos - but I have to say how staggeringly helpful yours has been. YES - it was the power supply. NO - I didn't suspect it, because apart from the box reporting 'no hard disk found' it appeared to be working OK. YES - I had gone to the trouble of swapping the disk for a known good one. The offending PSU was relatively new, having been changed a couple of years ago as a result of the box constantly attempting to reboot but never fully powering up. Again this was difficult to diagnose (but somewhat more obvious to assume 'power') because the PSU metered 12V on no load. Going to ditch the 'fag packet' Swann adapter and source something like a 5A laptop adapter. Thank you again for your help.
Thanks for the valuable info. it saved my wreck. all the time i checked other parts without the p/supply. finally thanks to you my prob was in the p/supply.
Thank you for a most helpful vid. I'd like to add the extra fan on my 'same' unit. Can you show us, in a brief vid how you did this and where you tapped power from?
Hi. very good video. Im wondering if you've ever experienced a Swann DVR fault where the video input is all wavey? I checked the cameras direct to a monitor and thats fine. Also the menu screens are crystal clear, so I assume its on the input side of the DVR. I've tried anothet powet supply as a quick fix but issue still remains. I'm guessing some sort of earthing or capacitor issue but any pointers would be great? Thanks, Dave
April 2021 Enjoyed the video & follow up. Can only agree but also found another problem you might be able to help with. On these Swann DVR 1425 boards also find Y16 close to the onboard battery gets cooked with the same problems. Wondered if you can read or know what Y16 is, please (besides it just being a crystal) Thanks!
Hi, I wonder if you can help. I originally had a DVR8-4575 which died so I bought a new DVR8-4580. It worked normally. Then I thought I would be smart and put a 6TB HDD in (largest is supposed to be 2TB) to give a longer recording time. Worked well for 6 months + then channels started dropping out. So now I've lost input at 2, 4 and 8 sockets (tested them all with a known working camera). Has the 6TB wrecked the DVR or is something else going on? Thanks. Brilliant videos.
Hi Thanks for this as I had the same fault and since been rectified by new power supply, Great Stuff, Just out of interest where did you get the extra fan from and what size is it?
I have just had same issue my hard drive wasn't working swapped power supply with the power supply for the cameras and worked straight away they send 3 power supplies 2 for the cameras and one for the unit the ones for the camera have red plugs never really took much notice the one for the unit is a black plug maybe the power supply you was testing was actually for the cameras and not the unit but watching your video had me checking power supplies
Awsome this worked Iv got a Swan cctv I got from maplin always had issues with it not recording and saying HDD non exists or it would record for a few hours then stop. And then batter up and wouldent record again. Iv had 2 HDDs still same thing. Iv just put a different supply on now and boom cranked up straight away recording. Original plug was right little and crappy
I have a sannce had it a few years. Not really had it on but turned it on and power cable died. Brought numerous new ones until got the 12v 4amp i needed for my system. My hard drive isnt showing so brought new hard drive still isnt showing so brough all new sata xable and changed the 3v battery still nothing. Ive used my multimetre and mine is drawing over 12 v on everything. So quite stuff any help appreciated.
Sannce told me needed 12v 4amp for my dvr so got that but still hard drive dead and yet on multimetre its showing 12v on all that you have done on this video. Forked out for new hard drive and cables but still no HDD it doesn't make a noise doesn't start up on storage its blank on old hard drive and new grrrr really doing my head in been at it a week and no success
Hi I've got the Swann recorder 8 channels and in the last 2 months I've put 4 new Hard drives in it and it keeps screwing them up? There's a red H symbol at the bottom every time I try to format the HD When this sign appears it doesn't format but when I first put another working HD in the unit it formats and works for about a week?
Hi there having same problem, hard drive stopped & the fan there was a bleeping noise but that has stopped , just ordered a new power cable will let you know if that sorts it cheers,
NVR-87082H, very similar main board to the unit in this video. On connecting power, No HDD activity at all, PWR an LAN lights blinking at 2 second intervals. Checked switch mode power pack, 12v present. Checked for 12v on PCB at the back of the power receptacle. No voltage. Hooked up my bench supply and she fired up straight away. Switch mode plug packs are proving to be very unreliable. Luckily, it's only a $20 fix for a system that cost me $800.
Hi, great info video. I suspect my power supply is doing the same - The adaptor is reading just over 12v but that's the disconnected output, not a reading from internal. i have a spare 12v power supply but it's rated higher than 2000mA, can I use it or do I have to keep to 2000mA. I think the other one is 2.5a, Appreciate your advise. Rich
Big thanks for that - I used an old Netgear adaptor, plugged it in an it's working fine. The trouble was it wasn't recording and when checking the drive status it was saying no drive. I also noticed the fan wasn't working as hard as it used to so I suspected some kind of power issue. Now when we look for the HDD all the info is there and the drive is recording once more. I feel Swann have sourced a low spec supply for these DVR's, the one we had was running fairly hot, I suspect it was a cost issue for them. Anycase I really appreciate your advice and the video which pointed me in the right direction. Rich
You're the best Mate! Had the No HDD warning, but system and cameras on. Checked as per you video and yes the power supply was at 8v. Got a new power supply and fixed. Thank you!
Hi, be grateful for your advice. I've got a similar problem with my Swann NVR. It's got the same board as the one in your video. I've got a Peak Electronics ESR meter and have checked the caps and all seem OK except one of the 220uF SMD caps which says leaky/in circuit so I removed it to test it and found the one leg just came away from the solder so I thought that was interesting. Anyway, tested it and tested OK so soldered it back in and retested. It gets to the Loading screen which goes blank and then does nothing. I've tried it with another HDD and get the same. I swapped that 1000uF cap with a 1200uF, closest one I had but still doesn't work. Can you tell me what voltages I should be seeing from the regulators? getting 5V1, 1V1, 1V4 & 3V3. middle two seem odd or are they references. HDD voltages are as they should be, 5V1 & 12V. I've found the same problem with cooling as you have, the system would just crash, I found the heatsink was excessively hot so left the lid off. If I can get this working again I'll have to fix a fan like you have there. Anyway, again, would be grateful for your advice, Thanks.
Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I'm assuming the video/cpu side of things is OK as the loading screen comes up on the screen. Again I'm assuming this is a bit like the BIOS on a PC then the OS isn't loading? As I'm sure you know, without a schematic it's a case of poking and hoping :) I may bin is as it's been flakey from new, not impressed with it considering how much it cost. Anyway, thanks for you help.
I've had a look at them and they seem to offer a lot more for the money and cross compatibility between cameras. That's the way I'll go, thanks for the advice.
I have a problem when I pug in the green light out. When I change power supply there's it shows no volts even at the in and out contacts. Also when I pug in the old one the U93 gets hot.
Hi I have a problem with my cameras not detecting motion and therefore not triggering record. I tried different PSU for both the main unit and camera and also change the camera. Still can't get the camera to record? have you come across this problem? Thanks
I'm having problems with my Swann DVR not working and have contacted Swann technical help, numerous emails back and forth over a week and not once have they mentioned the power supply, meanwhile I've ordered a new one and awaiting delivery.
I'm on my second power supply now. The original Swann one blew up so that was garbage and the £30, yes £30 replacement that Maplin told me would be the only adapter to power the unit has now either blown up or the Swann unit itself has blown. Either way I can no longer monitor my home while at work so I'll never buy a garbage Swann product again. Never!
Hi, thank you for your job. I have a problem , i have a dvr swann 4ch 41525h do not blink The net's ligth (the cable is ok) What is your criteria about that?
Thank you, Good information. it saved lots of time . Give you 7 Stars rating. *******

Very handy, had the same symptoms, found a new power supply - all back up and running. Thanks OP, much appreciated
Mate, I wouldn't have thought about the power supply at all! You can't take anything for granted!

hi there, which adapter did you use? do you have an amazon link for it? thanks!
i just checked mine, due to this, i swapped the main power and camera power to it. HDD fired up, BRILLIANT. saved a few quid, THANKS
I would have never guessed a power supply can ever fail, however mine did. Thought they were built for life lol.
Good video and thank you
you're a legend my friend, you have just saved me around £50 there was me thinking the hard drive had packed up and all it was was a £10 power supply ,thank you very much for sharing this video....

Glad to help. 😊👍
Can you please tell me we’re you go it bcuz I already change my hard drive 2 times and still the same
Dont forget about changing the battery on the circuit board. Its easily replaced and its a cheap button type battery 3V C2032. I hoovered out all the dust and cleaned the fan with cotton buds then changed thus battery and boom it worked. No one on these videos seems to mention this battery and its a cheap easy fix. Thx for vid tho
Hello, yes cmos battery needs replacing if reads under 2.6v. Normally it should read around 3v. Take care.
Good info, I replaced the HDD and then I found your video which solved the dead HDD problem. Thanks heaps
You look like a real pro. Very logical diagnostician. I wish I could send you all my dead electronics. Off now to check my power supply.
Thank you, I changed power supply and it fixed the problem. Thanks to you I didn’t buy a new hdd.
Your welcome 😊
Thank you the video....awesome fix. I had the same issue after a few power outage. I replaced the internal memory and the system still was not recording. Just came across your video and swapped the power supply with a spare I had and the system fired right up. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
Great work changed power and all problems with hard drive sorted. Thank you very much, saved me from spending $600.00 on a new base station.👌
Thanks so much my swann dvr8 1500 had no display just a flashing red light. Watched this, swapped the power supply and now working!
Thanks pal, very informative. Saved me wasting money on a new system.
It may be outdated but your video helped a lot, thank you.
Thanks great information. i was just about to order a new hard drive and spotted your video. After testing i have now ordered a new power adaptor :0) my hard drive was working but the output had dropped causing multiple issues on the board and a slow running hard drive. thanks again all the best Jason
Excellent video, diagnosed my PSU had failed, many thanks
Changed the power supply and the HDD is back in action!! Thanks so much!!
thanks so much for this video-like most here, replacing the power supply worked. in AUS i used this one 240V AC Adapter to DC 12V VOLT, 2A AMP w/Standard 2.1mm Inner/5.5mm Outer Plug. immediately removed the red 'no hdd' sign, and hdd lamp started flashing on box. great:)
Excellent!
Same as a few others, this video solved /resolved my problem. Although the first spare 12v power supply I tried was only 200mA and wouldn't work. I then tried a 500mA and it worked.
Mannnnn, you are awesome. I bought a HDD and had the same issue. i looked at the voltage but didnt think it matter and i used a new power supplky and it worked!! thanks
Your welcome. Glad to hear you've sort the issue. Take care 🙂
Good job, thanks mate, just fixed mine, before watching this video, I was thinking the unit is broken.
You're welcome!
Not sure if that's my problem yet, but explained perfectly, many thanks!
IMPORTANT SWANN OWNERS READ THIS , your set up will come with 3 power adapters
2 are rated 2 amps
1 is rated 1 amp
You need two adapters for the cameras and one for the DVR
So god only knows why the one you need for the DVR is rated at 2 amps , leaving a 1 amp and a 2 amp to power the cameras , no wonder the DVR keeps failing on a 1 amp adapter , Swann label which is for which please
Moral of the story is 2 amp is for the DVR !!!!

Thank you. This is the exact problem I had. Switch out the power supply and its working now
Thanks for that, I’ve changed these power supplies 3 times now over the years then they boot up properly and record!
Thanks for this video. I almost went out and buy a new one. It was just the power supply.
You are amazing. This solved my exact problem
Thanks for the valuable info. it saved my wreck. all the time i checked other parts without the p/supply. finally thanks to you my prob was in the p/supply.
Thank you, Amazing, wish I watched this before changing drives
Great video, it helped me get my system back up and running again. Thanks
Hi just wanted to ask would the voltage number on the plug if its bad? Should the voltage stay at 12v around that all the time
Around 12v or 11.50v on load sometime.
Thank you sir! Precisely the issue.
Thanks great video and great help my system stopped working last week and it was the power supply did not think it would be a five minute fix.
Thanks - helped me out - great simple video 👌🏻
Your welcome 😊
Thank you for a most helpful vid. I'd like to add the extra fan on my 'same' unit. Can you show us, in a brief vid how you did this and where you tapped power from?
thank you, was having the same issue, tested and was the power supply.

Great vid, you just saved me a 2TB hdd, it's working again now with a new power supply.
Great video, 1st thing I did was try a new power supply which fixed my problem, thanks.
Thankyou this saved my system I was going the Chuck the system out
superb! video... and that is very very expensive multimeter

Enjoyed the video & follow up. Can only agree but also found another problem you might be able to help with. On these Swann DVR 1425 boards also find Y16 close to the onboard battery gets cooked with the same problems. Wondered if you can read or know what Y16 is, please (besides it just being a crystal) Thanks!
You are absolutely correct. Thank you so much. It fixed it 🥰😁😘
Your welcome 😊👍
cheers for this video...... I'm going away to check my power supply ....fingers crossed
Thanks for this video mine was the capacity. Luckily I had one. 🎉
hi and thank you I had the same to day and after watching your video saved me some money and it's all working again thank you again
thank you
Hi Thanks for this as I had the same fault and since been rectified by new power supply, Great Stuff, Just out of interest where did you get the extra fan from and what size is it?
Thanks
I have just had same issue my hard drive wasn't working swapped power supply with the power supply for the cameras and worked straight away they send 3 power supplies 2 for the cameras and one for the unit the ones for the camera have red plugs never really took much notice the one for the unit is a black plug maybe the power supply you was testing was actually for the cameras and not the unit but watching your video had me checking power supplies
Awsome this worked
Iv got a Swan cctv I got from maplin always had issues with it not recording and saying HDD non exists or it would record for a few hours then stop. And then batter up and wouldent record again.
Iv had 2 HDDs still same thing. Iv just put a different supply on now and boom cranked up straight away recording.
Original plug was right little and crappy
mate your 100% right I have the same issue and you help me to fix it I want to thank you very much for this vid all the best
Thank you, I just got the hd working.
Thanks man it worked
There's a red H symbol at the bottom every time I try to format the HD
When this sign appears it doesn't format but when I first put another working HD in the unit it formats and works for about a week?
Hi there having same problem, hard drive stopped & the fan there was a bleeping noise but that has stopped , just ordered a new power cable will let you know if that sorts it cheers,
Thank you so much 🙏👍
Hi there again, it's me Suzanna from Mexico. The power cord that goes to the dvr is 12V 6a? or 12V 5a? My Dvr won't start again.
Gracias from Mexico
Thank you!
😊👍👍👍
Where did you get your power supply at?
Thanks man. Great vid that has saved me some £££
Hi, be grateful for your advice.
Hi any advice on what power supply adapter I should buy
12vdc about 2amp or 3amp would be better. Look on ebay for liteon 12vdc chargers/power supply.

@@iTCXtreme cheers will let you know how I get on
I have a problem when I pug in the green light out.
Thanks
Hi
Thanks for a great video but on my board I've got a led1 light flashing and not sure what it relates to any help would be great cheers.

Yes it red and next to it reads led 1
thanks mate helped me heaps, good on ya
I'm having problems with my Swann DVR not working and have contacted Swann technical help, numerous emails back and forth over a week and not once have they mentioned the power supply, meanwhile I've ordered a new one and awaiting delivery.
Hope the new power supply resolves the issues. Take care 😊👍
Hi there Im having the same issue What Power Supply are you using to get the HDD going?
Hi, same spec as the original or 12vdc 2amp +
@@iTCXtreme 12vdc 2amp +
I'm on my second power supply now. The original Swann one blew up so that was garbage and the £30, yes £30 replacement that Maplin told me would be the only adapter to power the unit has now either blown up or the Swann unit itself has blown. Either way I can no longer monitor my home while at work so I'll never buy a garbage Swann product again. Never!
So is it the power supply cable that’s bad then?
Hi, thank you for your job.
I have a problem , i have a dvr swann 4ch 41525h do not blink The net's ligth (the cable is ok)
What is your criteria about that?
iTCXtreme
How can i do?
iTCXtreme thank, i will see your video because you are so sincerelly . thank again
We have the same issue but did not realize it until someone had broke in and we tried to pull the video. It had not recorded anything.
it would be more helpful to have the video camera on what you were testing. Thx.
Hello. My watch is in trouble and does not update the time. I believe the crystal oscillator is near the battery. Do you know his frequency?
Great advice
Ha ha! Brilliant. Simple as that. Thank you so much.
