- My overview of the controversial Leica X Vario camera from Leica. The Zoom version of the Leica X2 is larger, heavier and faster but is it worth the $2,850 asking price?

A whole bunch of comments from people who have never seen or used this camera.
The build quality is sublime. The picture quality is amazing.
The lens is pretty much prime quality.
Leica can't make more light without a much bigger lens.
Its only 1/2 stop off the Nikon or Ricoh APS-C compacts but has the rest of the zoom range too
fantastic build, one of the best mid range zooms ever made, compact, exceptional colours. what more do you want ?
"... a little pricey if you ask me"
Truly the understatement of the decade!
F3.5 at 3200 at 28mm is plenty of range. A super sharp walk around camera with lovely range. I also don't understand the size comparison with the M. The M is much bigger, especially thicker, and much heavier.
Steve do you have tre RX100 mark2 already? Thanks
What are the patches you have on your M?
have you used it ???
Kudos to Leica for letting you near one. I liked your stealthy M240 dots, coupled with the, ahem, discreetly branded evf. Great lenses, epic history, but essentially jewellery.
The best action shots are made with pre-focus. Only very few cameras, such as the D4 and 1DX are good enough for tracking focus, and that's with pro photographers who know how to keep the action in the focus point matrix. All pros know at the key to good action photographs is pre-focus ...
Totally agree! That's what happens when the masters of the prime lenses do a zoom lens! If this camera was a 35mm equivalent f2 and built-in Evf or range finder, would be perfect!!!!
Beautiful camera .
Irritating review!!
Why don't you put in a bloody DS-Card (memory card) so we don't have to watch that warning-sign on the LCD-screen all the time? How much prepartion does it take to anticipate that you will need a bloody memory-card if you want to show HOW this camera works?
no doubt ! i gonna get my RX1
LOL 1.8 minimum! Trouble with that is most of us like to carry cameras around without dislocating our shoulders..
It could be a mda leica
The silver dial is too big and like really out there. Looks cheap too
I stayed for the m240
Leica misread their opportunity and blew it. "Mini M" should have been to M240 what Fuji's X100S is to the X-Pro1. Imagine a smaller than M240 fully featured APS-C Leica body with a diminutive and pocketable 35mm Summicron f/2 on it (@52.5), or, better still, an RX1R-killing mini M, with full sensor and a 50mm Summicron f/2 on it!!
First comment!!! Nice review!!!!
Whoopy, another new model that we didn't need. Oohh, I'm gonna have to change the camera I bought last Sunday, cos it's now out of date. :(
Wow ... sounds like a real PoS. I mean, the RX1 is God quality almost ... and you obviously agree with me. Oh well. $3K for a red-dot. Then again, I purchased the Sigma DP2 Merrill ... which is a UI nightmare, however its images are epic.
What was Leica thinking....it's a modern day version of my Panasonic DMC LC1, even down to the MF assist. Why could they not have used a fixed zoom lens like the one on the LC1/Digilux 2. That'll be there downfall with this camera. Just not fast enough, that is what the consumer wants.
if i had 3k laying around, i just might buy it. the problem is, me and almost every other enthusiast doesn't so we won't. i think this will be a total failure despite the great IQ.
aperture starts at f/3.5, no wonder its sharp corner to corner.
Ps. It looks like a disposable camera.
No way I would pay that kind of money for such a camera, even with the Leica name on it.
Good review though!
Why are people fixated with brand names rather than quality. I just dont get it. Lol.
Eek this thing sucks!
Leica just invented a new class of camera; the over-blown, over-priced "Blooper-Zoom"
pos
talk about stealth shooting when using a shiny ass lens...
Who the he'll is going to pay nearly three grand for that?
This just looks beyond terrible.
Possibly the dumbest "compact" ever made. What were they thinking??
Was the engineering team smoking crystal meth one of the worst expensive cameras of ever seen
This camera is a fail whale full of lose.
Though I think the lens looks pretty ugly and is way too big...
I really do not understand Leica... They are so far behind every one else. Last century ideas... How come they do not take their quality and knowhow and offer us really useful up-to-date products. For this prices it should have a 1.8 lens minimum.
Wow, that lens is worse than the standard -s you find on other APS-C cameras. And the asking price is horrible! Leica, wasn`t thinking straight when designing this lens. The camera is great, but the lens.... I would never buy it.
