I just gave this one a very belated Like/Thumb’s-Up. When I watched this, long ago, I did not yet have a you tube account, so, was unable to click the Like. It is difficult to remember how much of a part this video played, in my eventually adding the Leica M system, almost five years ago. I tested a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, on pre-owned and demonstrator M9 and M Type 240 cameras, during several visits to Houston Camera Exchange, in Texas. I believe that may have been when I repeatedly viewed this presentation. I finally decided to buy the lens, in April 2018, at which time I learned that it had just become possible to buy an M10, without having to first be on a waiting list. I crunched the numbers, scuttled plans to buy a monster-sized Nikon super-telephoto lens, and bought a new M10, along with the well-preserved, pre-owned Summilux. Realistically, I had already aged-out of wanting to carry a 600mm f/4 or 400mm f/2.8 lens, out and about, but had not yet admitted it to myself. So, the M10, and Summilux, saved me from myself, and, cost less than I would have spent on the big Nikon telephoto lens.
Guys Leica is more about Lenses and less about body this doesn't mean body isn't good enough. I own a Sony NEX 5N and I'm pretty happy with it. Ofcourse it cant provide me the amazing bokeh, depth of field, rich colors like Leica but its very good. Leica is for niche market. People who are completely dedicated to photography and who have tons of money as well. Whats important is that you should be able to utilize that extra quality and should be able to notice the difference as well.
Thanks god they released the Leica M-E for people that wants a more traditional Leica, so i have mixed feelings, i don't like the new M but we have the option of the M-E that makes me kinda happy.
I think this is just superb. It's almost everything I would have wanted changed or upgraded in the M9. The only thing that would have made it better, specs wise, is a thinner body like the film M's. Apart from that, the functionality of this camera looks awesome. Thank you, Leica.
Hi Owen. I think many will buy the M with making videos in mind, using their M and R system lenses, which have been popular with Canon 5D videographers. They'll also be able to take stills from time to time if they want. :-)
Leica M with a 50mm 1.4 Summilcron - 12,000 bucks - I cant wait to own one.... current savings 1000 bucks.... gonna take me about 2-3 years to save enough money for one :D
Leica R series glass is cheaper than many Nikon and Canon glass. Buy and adapter and they work wonderfully on non-Leica DSLR bodies. Try the 50mm Summicron... about $300
I wonder it the are going to make a M type-240 P version. I love this camera, really wish that I can afford one at the moment. However that giant Leica red dot is very eye-catching and intrusive to when Leicas are used the most, on the streets. They should really give you the option of not only what colour, but what style of branding you want whether it's the red dot or the classic branding on the top plate.
It couldn't have been that hard to give us a R digital body. Wish I had know about the Leica R adapter sooner... just converted 3 lens to Nikon mounts... oh well. Still, I bet my 50 year old M3 will still be clicking away 20 years from now...
the thing that you people don't understand is that they gave you everything traditional in a leica m so you can enjoy as any other m but also made it possible to be as a perfect camera for multimedia as a canon 5dmek3 so what you're buying is a leica that is stealthy in the street but will shine in studio landscape portrait video ==> anything you throw at it
Hey, be fair to the guy. M3 was printed on the first T shirt. He might have forgotten that the one on the second T shirt is a IIIf. Neither of them he had to sell back in 2012.
This looks like a very good update. The live view looks spectacular, and the EVF is a natural extension of the system. The update looks bold too, like adding the movie button *and* the peeking button. I thought that as we got deeper into the system, especially using the extra grip things got too complicated. The zoom to check focus looks dud, but I've never liked it. The movie looked in need of stabilization, but I think we saw a worse case scenario and it still had a look to it. NotLikelyToBuy.
Hi Owen. I think many will buy the M expressly for making videos with their M and R system lenses, which have been popular with Canon 5D videographers. They'll also be able to take stills from time to time if they want. :-)
I switched to my right eye when I started using rangefinders, and have stuck with right-eye for all cameras now. I'm actually kind of ambilookstrous now.
The M's video capability is still far behind other dslr and some point-shoot cameras. Definitely not for video use. It's not about how well the camera performs, it's about who can afford the leica name brand for bragging rights.
Great camera, I like it. I used to EVF and don't particularly like any kind of OVF, either TTL or sided. Now it turned to be quite versatile camera with superb lenses and ease of using in LV/EVF mode thanks to peaking. I wanted to buy RX1, but this is better IMO. And RF could be very useful for shooting with my Super Elmar 18, where the peaking doesn't work well (I know about huge DOF, but I love shooting close up portraits with UWA). And it looks like Cron 90 finallly will be usable!
i like it.. thought about everything apart from no headphone jack!! how can you not hear sound even if it has audio monitor...need variable speed ctrl as well.
Leica are making new cameras more consumer friendly by adding features some might consider as "fluff". But new features might always come in handy some day...
so how much will be in the uk for this camera?. one thing. is this the new m10 only that is not called m10. Because i heard there is a new camera coming in spring 2013. There is another camera now that is an entry level the leica m-e.
No the sensor is not the same. big difference in them is that the M is CMOS sensor and the M9 was a CCD. And yes it is still full fam. and yeah i belive that the EVF is the same one you can use on the X2 :). (I'm not too sure about all the facts but hop this helps)
very interesting. Oddly, John Dooley uses his left eye. Even though I use my left eye with slr, I find more convenient to use my right eye to compose and focus a rangefinder camera. Because the viewfinder is on the left on the camera. So your nose is not an obstacle, and you can open your left eye (both eyes opened !). Left eyed slr user, what is your experience with rangefinder cameras ?
Kinda have to agree. I like the M series rangefinder. Very discrete, very simple to use, and built with military precision. The fact that nothing is automated, but with no sacrifice to image quality, is exactly why I loved Leica. It is an interesting move, but I don't think it's the right one.
so does it have the same sensor as the m9 or is a different one. i also assume this is a full frame. I really love these cameras but so out of my price range. Is the viewfinder the same that you can use in the x2.
I think it's interesting: it scales from what an M always has been to an EVF-based monster camera for nature, or video, or studio-flash based shooting. Too bad they had to make it even fatter to achieve this versatility, though.
I use an Olympus EVF on my M240. Working perfectly fine. I used the money saved to buy a gimble to shoot video with my M240 if I forget to bring my Sony A7III. Leica is a great toy that can take photos as well; just like my Rolex which can tell the time though not as accurate as my Samsung smartphone.
thanks for this. looks promising and interesting, especially the video.. what brand is that small microphone you're using on it? is it Leica as well? Is it giving you good results and avoiding surrounding noises?
no i just really don't need movie mode on a rangefinder , or focus peaking or whatever the new focus thing is , i would rather have it kept to the basics and have a better cmos sensor than this.
would have been nicer if they had skipped the live view, video modes and kept the original design with the thumb wheel around the d pad instead of that little wheel. I also like their original menu from before but the screen is nice... the rectangular buttons taken from the X2 aint nice.
Well you dont need to use those features if you dont want them... But if you do theyre there for you to use them. I dont see a problem. If you dont want them, dont use them
You do not need to buy a leica. Leica means a concept that photography is not for anyone who is concerned only with the result of the photo. Leica is a camera for those who value the act of shooting. Similar to beware of the L-series lenses, the Canon. The camera mount is manual, the body is designed to last many years and the lenses are finished by hand. There are cameras that are working for 50 years without problems! This is a pointless discussion...
Even for 2012 that Video quality was shocking. Rolling shutter, shaky... unusable shite. So good... they just abandoned it and took it off the M10 to avoid further embarrassment. Whereas Anna on the other hand...
I'm late to the tablet, but leica are waaaaay behind when it comes to digital. I own an M4-2 which is a beautiful camera. but for digital I would not spend the money Leica ask. There are so many better options for much less money.
I wonder who is still using his/her M240 to shoot video almost 9 years after this video was made? Who would have thought Leica put a GPS unit on a new version of their new external EVF and their SL body? Thankfully they took it out from the SL2.
Sooooo basically the worlds most expensive Sony NEX camera! Focus Peaking, Lens Adapters, Live View LCD, accessory microphones and EVF's! They really adopted all that is awesome about Sony's line of mirrorless SLR's. I'll be keeping my NEX 5R and NEX 6 thanks. ...that and I cant afford a $6K camera! Lol
Hate to say this, but as a huge fan of leica, feeling those new digital leica is slowly moving away from that original feel and sense of leica M cameras. Guess it is understandable from the digital age pressure, leica has to catch up with the mainstream cameras. However Personally, compare to those new ones, I like M9,M8 more. They preserved more leica features in the digital age than those new ones.
This video was released 17 Sept 2012. I ordered one that day. I am still waiting....and waiting....and waiting.....zzzz. And as for the accessories - they are just a figment of Leica's imagination. Just not available. Order now and be ready for a loonng wait. A year or more.
Love classic designs but this is shocking.... Running through the specs like that pretty much outlines how behind leica is on so many levels. Gorgeous camera, yes, but entry level DSLR's smoke this camera on most applicable levels. That is if you reverse engineer back from the end result... The photo. Then consider something like the x100s or OM-D which this camera fails to imitate badly.
The accessories and features of the M have really brought Leica into the modern age. It is wonderful to see how the company has adapted.
I just gave this one a very belated Like/Thumb’s-Up. When I watched this, long ago, I did not yet have a you tube account, so, was unable to click the Like. "One button jumps out immediately... Live view!" Truly amazing for Leica to have come this far in technology.
I for one am one of those people. Been waiting for this camera for a year now. The wait is almost over now, and let's begin the fun )
The Aston Martin of the camera world. Beautiful piece of kit...as to be expected from Leica.
Guys Leica is more about Lenses and less about body this doesn't mean body isn't good enough. I own a Sony NEX 5N and I'm pretty happy with it. Finally a complete new camera with some very interesting options. My M9 is already gathering dust!
Thumbs up for Anna, big time!
'Movie' button is the first feature mentioned..........that tells you a lot!!
Thanks god they released the Leica M-E for people that wants a more traditional Leica, so i have mixed feelings, i don't like the new M but we have the option of the M-E that makes me kinda happy.

its not made for hipsters and its a good investment for those just want to focus on the photography using the best lenses in the world
Hi Owen. I think many will buy the M with making videos in mind, using their M and R system lenses, which have been popular with Canon 5D videographers. They'll also be able to take stills from time to time if they want. :-)

Tell the owner of the kabab shop at the back that I miss his lamb shis with pita bread sooooooo much.
Leica R series glass is cheaper than many Nikon and Canon glass. Buy and adapter and they work wonderfully on non-Leica DSLR bodies. Try the 50mm Summicron... about $300
Excellent camera.
Are the pictures he shot and video available anywhere?
I wonder it the are going to make a M type-240 P version. I love this camera, really wish that I can afford one at the moment. A Guy from the Leica Academy that can't tell the difference between a Leica III and a Leica M3 .. ok, shure ..
I cringed.
Hey, be fair to the guy. M3 was printed on the first T shirt. He might have forgotten that the one on the second T shirt is a IIIf. Neither of them he had to sell back in 2012.

Magnífica cámara. Simplemente lo mejor de lo mejor.

"Something with a collapsible lens"... way to know your Leica's there buddy.
i like it..
thought about everything apart from no headphone jack!! how can you not hear sound even if it has audio monitor...need variable speed ctrl as well.
But will it blend?
Leica are making new cameras more consumer friendly by adding features some might consider as "fluff". But new features might always come in handy some day...

very interesting.

I know I'm missing the point here, but could someone please tell me where the shop is in London shown at 1m43s ?
Forgot to add: Anna is such a beauty!
Rolling shutter... shaky shaky.. only thing that looks good in the M's video is Anna!
or u could get a used Leica M8 or M9 now
great review, love the video
I Love Leica
Kinda have to agree. I like the M series rangefinder. Very discrete, very simple to use, and built with military precision. The fact that nothing is automated, but with no sacrifice to image quality, is exactly why I loved Leica.

JON, this camera is not weathered sealed, according to the NY soho store, let me know whats up with that, thanks
Very fine model
Wonderful Camera I am going to connect Tina to this Camera! informative video!
I think it's interesting: it scales from what an M always has been to an EVF-based monster camera for nature, or video, or studio-flash based shooting. Too bad they had to make it even fatter to achieve this versatility, though.
The real question is what is the price?
I use an Olympus EVF on my M240. Working perfectly fine. I used the money saved to buy a gimble to shoot video with my M240 if I forget to bring my Sony A7III. Leica is a great toy that can take photos as well; just like my Rolex which can tell the time though not as accurate as my Samsung smartphone.
Space age?
looks like a "transformer" with all thins silli equipment on the body. no, not leica like.
Nice vid- well done to Lecia (and Panasonic) pity that there isn't an IS lens function (yet).
thanks for this. looks promising and interesting, especially the video..
what brand is that small microphone you're using on it? is it Leica as well? Is it giving you good results and avoiding surrounding noises?
hope can have one before the end of the world
no i just really don't need movie mode on a rangefinder , or focus peaking or whatever the new focus thing is , i would rather have it kept to the basics and have a better cmos sensor than this.
no. it's NOT The same dimensions. it's larger. Leica keeps making larger FF Ms, while the rest of the industry aims to make small FF cameras.
would have been nicer if they had skipped the live view, video modes and kept the original design with the thumb wheel around the d pad instead of that little wheel. I also like their original menu from before but the screen is nice... the rectangular buttons taken from the X2 aint nice.

Hi John, Where did you take the pictures in London Mayfair? Thanks, Ko
This is Shoreditch not Mayfair.
Leica M $6,950 (US dollars)
evf 2? the same as the one on olympus?
Demonstrates hideous 1080p footage
Host: “superb.”
Amazing, that's all.

A beautiful lady and a beautiful camera.... what do you need more?
No need to give me fancy functions. Just give me manual cranking lever. I will be grateful forever.
Didn't they implement it already in previous m versions? 🤔
i really liked anna
Even for 2012 that Video quality was shocking. Rolling shutter, shaky... unusable shite. So good... they just abandoned it and took it off the M10 to avoid further embarrassment. Whereas Anna on the other hand...

cool camera - cool stuff!
where are all the cool photoes from cool leicas?
Probably filmed with a 5D MK II. No?
Leica for that price??? No, thanks. I am a fujifilm x100s fan !
man i wish i had a leica m
I wonder who is still using his/her M240 to shoot video almost 9 years after this video was made? Who would have thought Leica put a GPS unit on a new version of their new external EVF and their SL body? Thankfully they took it out from the SL2.

go for M8,M9, M-Monochrom xD
CANON is a toy compared to that camara. This is manufactured in Portugal, i must say, LEICA is the world best lens and cameras...
WOW 3FPS!!!!!
The price please
btw, how is the IQ at high ISOs ?
I hope the buttons on the black model released to the public are black - the silver buttons just look cheap and nasty
Running on reputation more than technology.
I know what i want for chrismas
Who developed the sensor?
zimonslot www.cmosis.com/news/press_releases/new_leica_m_uses_cmosis_24_mp_cmos_image_sensor
Also I like cameras and lenses but I cannot imagine any use at their price.
If I ever win the lottery...
No video stabilization!!!
LEICA M is like the new Iphon 5 a lot of crap you dont need... but nice camera...
Hate to say this, but as a huge fan of leica, feeling those new digital leica is slowly moving away from that original feel and sense of leica M cameras. digital leicas and film leicas are two different things..You would think a new company made the digital ones
25 frame per sec MEH... even my 41MP handphone camera can do better...
cant live without AF
Good lenses, bad sensors. Is this the same Anna who posed in front of the Fuji x100s?
